Looking for an IPv6 enabled wifi client bridge/router

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 04:12 PM PDT

I'm looking for a device that can act as a wifi client or bridge while also supporting IPv6 in that mode. So far I've found some travel routers that support IPv6 but only when they are running in standard wifi router mode.

The unit in question must be able to connect to the target wifi network and either directly bridge it or act as a client to the network. In both cases it must support IPv6.

EDIT: Seems that WISP (Wireless ISP) may cover my needs. I found a unit (and it was one I was looking at already) that supports this and it supports IPv6 in this mode.

EDIT: Merging comment post. For those that want a layout of my odd setup here you go. Maybe you might understand what I'm doing.

"ISP" point - Cell phone with Wifi Tethering active \/ Wifi Client router

The wifi client router has an access point setup to allow other devices to connect back via Wifi and provide other functions however my current unit that is acting in that position doesn't support IPv6 at all. The cell phone in question does support IPv6 and the provider does as well. This has been validated by connecting directly to it and verifying that it works from that point.

    Advice for AT&T Fiber Install

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:06 PM PDT

Scheduled AT&T to come out to new house to install "internet 1000" fiber in a few weeks. Looking for guidance on how to insure the best install.

Builder installed conduit running from exterior wall across basement to low voltage box. Should fiber run full length to low voltage box or just to exterior wall and CAT6 through conduit?

Will AT&T technician be able to put modem in true bridge mode and disable wifi? I just want a straightforward modem to add my own network gear.

    Anything I have not considered?

    Thanks!

routing port 80 for a webserver not working. RT-AC87U

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:15 PM PDT

I'm running a small web design office. To be able to work on more that one web at a time I've installed Wamp server on a local computer. Then I recently moved my office to another company to both assist them and do my own sites. Problem started when setting up my router inside their network. I simply can't access the webserver from outside.
I've set up my router ip with a DMZ and then just using my own routers firewall. Then I have a forwarding of port 80 to port 80 on my "webservers" ip adress. It's still nor working. I've searched a bit to find any solution or reasons for that this is not working without any luck. Hope someone understands and know how to fix this.

How to ceiling (or wall) mount in an apartment?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:13 PM PDT

    Hey guys, two questions:

Assuming the landlord doesn't get word of this - what would be the easiest and best way to temporarily mount an AP on the wall or ceiling while minimizing the long term damage? I know those may be slightly at odds, but curious.

And what is the prettiest way to hide the cable if I can't drill in the wall? The access point would likely be over the TV in the living room.

Assistance picking out a good switch

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:00 PM PDT

First time on this sub, but it seems the most appropriate place to ask my question. I have a professional coming by to feed my Cat6 cables in December and I want to make sure I do everything correctly thereafter. I have 3 bedrooms on the too floor of my house and plan on putting an ethernet port in each room, two ethernet ports in the living room behind the TV and 4 ethernet ports in the basement, 2 behind my computer and 2 on the otherside of the basement behind an expected TV. Currently in the living room I have an access point that pushes my media from movies on my pc to it and gives wifi. I want to know if I can move my router to the top floor in my bedroom and continue using it like an access point as it is currently set up. Is it as easy as plug and play? There is hardly a wifi signal in our bedroom which is why I want to move it upstairs. I read the tips on ethernet and to just get an unmanaged switch. The switch I want to get is this one:

    TP-Link TL-SG1016D 10/100/1000Mbps 16-Port Gigabit 13-inch Rackmountable Switch, 32Gbps Capacity https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004ELA0SS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_uHKZBbN6YEG59

Does it have to be on a rack? Or can I just put it up on a wooden shelf?

Power went out in master bedroom, and now U-verse gateway won’t connect no matter which room I plug it in to. Is there a particular reason for this?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:58 PM PDT

The gateway has power supplied to it, and everything is plugged in properly. Every time I turn it on, though, the broadband light keeps flashing red. I'm not exactly sure why this is, though I suspect it (obviously) has something to do with the master bedroom. Can someone help me out?

Is it ok if the wires in a wall jack have different length from cable to jack? Will that affect latency?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 08:34 AM PDT

Basically I did a test of plugin the cables to the wall jack I just received and after seeing it, I though it was wrong and different lengths will affect electrical latency / timings.

    Is this wrong? https://imgur.com/a/MyE5caJ

My common sense tells me that it is, and that all cables should be more or less the same.

Also, as I don't have the proper tools to do this... I'm pushing the cables with a screw driver and checking for continuity with a multimeter. I hope that's ok.

    Router not reaching me

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:57 PM PDT

The router and model is in the front house. I am using the Archer C7 router with the model that Spectrum gave me for free. I am having issues with the range of the 5GHZ and 2GHZ connection. What should I do? Buy a new router like the Nighthawk X6S?

    Looking for small POE switch

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:57 PM PDT

    I have a Ubiquiti ER-X SFP and a UAP PRO AC. I also have a Cisco SG300-20.

I'd like to power the AP with a poe switch but it looks like they are kind of expensive. Also, I'm not concerned about all of my network devices being Unifi controllable.

    Features I'm looking for:

    • POE
    • Fanless
    • >8 ports
    • Gigabit
    • Under $250 (not apposed to buying used)
    • Link aggregation

Basically, I want a POE switch that has the ability for me to introduce things like QOS and VLANs into my network.

I've looked at a few models that look good:

    • Ubiquiti ES-8-150W
    • Cisco SG300-10PP
    • FS.com S1250-8T2F

I've also looked at models that I'd like but are out of the price range:

    • Juniper EX2200-C
    • HP 2915-8G-PoE

    Questions I have:

    1. Am I looking for the right equipment here?
    2. Are there other models that meet my criteria?
    3. Should I pick one of the devices I've found over the others?

    Thanks for any input.

Networked NAS with game files - Wireless access from multiple machines

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:56 PM PDT

So, bit of a query rather than how to. I'm looking at setting up a micro ITX gaming PC along side my PS4 pro and Xbox one X. The wife and I have separate PC's as we are predominately PC gamers. I've looked into things like Steam link etc but I feel with one of us streaming tv series or downloading something it will hinder the wireless capability of the Steam Link device.

So, how about a NAS with all our game installations on it and setting them as our game installation drives, how bad would a 5Ghz wireless network hinder the read/write times of say 7200rpm mechanical drives? Would load times be nigh on impossible or would it simply not work?

Should I get 5GHz wi-fi (if so, is there any recommended device that I should buy?)

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:35 PM PDT

Hey guys, a couple of questions:

    • I live in a small apartment (about 53m2 or 570ft2). My ISP gives me 200Mb/s internet and it works flawlessly via ethernet. The modem/router provided is the Huawei HG8245H. The only thing is it does not have any other than 2.4GHz wi-fi (802.11b/g/n). I have asked the ISP and they do not provide any other modem/router.
    • Here is the link for the measurements I made: https://imgur.com/a/IGy09QM
    • As you can see its is pretty crowded here. The signal strength is not bad in the apartment but there is interference with more than 2 networks in every room. I get about 25-60Mb/s speed when i test it.
    • I am thinking about buying a device that could provide me with 5GHz wireless network:
      • Will it help me generally? The distance will never be more than 9 meters (29ft) and the signal will never pass more than one wall (brick).
      • What device should I get? another router or AP? or is there any other maybe cheaper device that I would just plug via ethernet, configure it and it would provide me with 5GHz wi-fi in the same range of IP addresses.

Question about AT&T Fiber Set in my home network

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:29 PM PDT

I'm trying to plan out a home network with AT&T fiber service and can't see to get a consistent answer. Looking at my attached drawing, do you all know if option 2 and 3 will work? I'm assuming option 1 will work for sure but it is not ideal for my situation. In case you are wondering about option 3, I might be in a situation where I have 1 CAT6 run to a room. In that room I might need to split the cable to accommodate multiple devices such as an AppleTV and set top box.

    Looking for new router advice

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:04 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a new router soon since my current one has been giving me issues. I have a couple questions.

I've been looking at the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X and the Ubiquiti UAP AP-AC Lite. I have to ask: would purchasing those devices perhaps be excessive for me, or no? I only live in a fair sized apartment, not a large house, with only 10-15 devices on-and-off connected to my wifi. I also just don't know if I want to spend as much as that ~$130 on this upgrade: that feels a tad pricey (though at the same time I don't really know how prices go for these kinds of things). Could I go cheaper without compromising too much on quality?

Also, I'm fairly certain this is the case, but I'd like to ask here: if I, a Spectrum customer, was interested in using my current modem (ISP-provided Technicolor TC8715D, also my current router) on bridge mode and then implementing any new router, that would be fine, right? What matters to Spectrum is that I have a certain modem, not a certain router, right?

    Modem/Router upgrade

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 06:34 PM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade from my ISP rented modem/router combo to separate units. I think I have the modem figured out (Arris SB6190). I'm stuck on what router to go with - there's a lot of options and reviews seem to be somewhat hit and miss. I'm looking at the TP-Link AC4000 or the Netgear Nighthawk X6S (mostly because Costco carries these and they are great for returns). I'm willing to spend up to $200, but obviously less is best. My internet package should support 100 up/10 down.

I know I need to take a bit harder line on security, especially with "smart" devices. I'm also planning to switch my desktop over to a wired connection - this computer is used for teaching classes and using Zwift (virtual/interactive bike app for a bike trainer that is super finicky about the internet connection).

    Other potentially helpful information:

~1000 sq ft house built in the 60's

Two people in the house, assume 2 laptops and a desktop always in use

One TV that has a Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast and Xbox hooked up

    A few tablets and phones

"Smart" home devices: garage door, Google Home x2, Nest thermostat and smoke detector

Why is wget so slow on my Ubuntu server?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:58 PM PDT

When I run wget on a test file, I get consistently bad speeds (less than 2MB/s). My internet downstream is capable of 400Mbps.

    Test sites:

    Results of wget:

I also notice no speed issues when using apt update, apt install, or docker pull.

I'm at a loss here. Why is curl/wget so slow compared to everything else? What can I do to diagnose the issue? I've been struggling with this for days.

    More system info:

    • Ubuntu Server 18.04
    • Using Intel 8th gen processor with 16GB memory and 500GB SSD
    • Wired to a gigabit network using Unifi USG router

Let me know if there's more information I can provide.

    Old Modem

    New Modem

    Coaxial Cable

The coaxial cable is labeled TRS-6L, and I'm on Time Warner Cable/Spectrum for the ISP. My current router is the TP-Link TC-7610 and my new router is the NetGear CM500

EDIT: I ended up getting it in the slot. Just took a lot of time and maneuvering of the cable/modem

    Network upgrade help

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:38 AM PDT

Hello. I would like help for the small office network of mine which is going to get a new upgrade soon...

So, I have say 4 PCs on a network. Two on one gigabit switch and the other two on another gigabit switch. What I have done is push the second switch as an extension of the first one because its only 8 port ones and less clutter that way. Okay, so the PCs can talk to each other just fine. Next, I have one WiFi router on the first switch that acts as a connector between the wired and wireless network. I have laptops which I connect to the router and that gives me good rdp access/ lan access to the wired network and all 4 PCs. Fine. This is all offline so no internet goes anywhere till now.

Next, I have WiFi USB dongles on the four PCs and they get their internet that way. The laptops get rdp access over WiFi and the one rdp server also has one USB adapter and the network passes that through to the laptops.

This is all fine but I am doing to get gigabit fibre in coming days or weeks and I want to know how to put that internet into the network. Currently all devices have default gateway at 10.0.0.1 which if I remember correctly is the first switch so they can talk to one another.

Should i 1. Leave the settings as is and just set the default gateway of the first switch to the fibre ont ? Or 2. No idea. Thats all I can think.

I have zero education about networking and such but I can look up stuff and think sideways on a problem so I can do it. I need help. Thanks in advance

Edit: I currently have ZERO security. Had to disable even windows firewall on the pcS running windows 7 and I don't want that.

How to stop double NAT issue to a PC while keeping both DHCP servers running?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:11 PM PDT

The current way that it is setup, the router/modem from Fios has it's wireless turned off. All devices connect to a secondary router which relays through the ISP one, then out of the house. I am getting a double NAT issue despite putting the secondary router in DMZ on the Fios. Is there another way I can get rid of the double NAT without rewiring everything?

Best way to extend network to rental (neighboring) home?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 09:48 AM PDT

I currently have a Ubiquity setup for my home network and I want to extend it to my rental home, which is all of 80ft next to me, and include internet as a benefit of the rent. My brother is going to be renting the house from me, and I trust him impeccably, so I'm not worried about him doing anything nefarious.

Burying cable isn't really an option, otherwise I'd just do that. I need to have him on his own subnet and was thinking that I should put him on his own switch as well so that he can have his own equipment and everything. The main thing that I'm not sure about is the best way to cover a 4500sq ft home. Can I run Ubiquit APs without Ethernet backhaul? Is there a better way to go about this? I know I can easily get WiFi into the home, but I'm a bit unsure what to do from there.

Landlord Controled Wifi: Diagnosing the Issue

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:41 PM PDT

I've moved into a divided house where I live with roommates in the lower half and the landlord and his family live in the upper half. We all share a network connection that is housed in the upper half which works OK for things like browsing and watching videos for the most part, however, things like playing games and video chats are a nightmare. I'll try to provide as much information as possible on the situation:

    • Around 6 mbps download on a good day and .5 mbps on a bad day using google's speed test.
    • There are three connections available: regular, EXT, and 5G (Not sure what the difference is, all are pretty slow).
    • There is one Ethernet port downstairs that I have tested that does not seem to help or has even worsened speed test results.
    • I've had one instance where I have tested the connection with a laptop and received 50 mbps in a different area of the apartment. I've tried this test again with another laptop and the speed was down to 6 mbps in the same area.
    • I've bought a usb 3.0 wifi dongle that has help steady my connection somewhat but is still very slow.
    • I've asked to move the router closer to where my PC is located to help with possible degrading signal but I haven't seen a change in speed so far.

I realize this could just be a case where the internet is on the lowest plan possible, but I'm wondering if there are any other possible solutions since I would be one of the only people in my home that would be okay for paying for better wifi that is used by everyone.. Getting my own account is my last resort if it's even possible since that would cost the most money. Here are a few questions I have and I appreciate any help I can get!

    1. Is there anything I can suggest to improve speeds? Maybe the router is old or is still too far away?
    2. Why is the Ethernet connection not helping?
    3. Is it possible to open my own account at the same address as my landlord?

Range extension question in apartment with coax hookups

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 11:46 AM PDT

In an L-shaped apartment (1300sq.ft) with modem and old (and probably dying) Airport Extreme on one side of the L (office) with coax hookup. I also have another coax wall hookup coming to my second bedroom (currently another office) that I was wondering if I could utilize as a range extender?

Open to new ideas for now to network this place. I'm fighting a TON of interference from other routers, and run mostly Mac products (5GHz). Thanks!

I'm tired of buying routers. Can I add a Ubiquiti UAP-LR to replace the WIFI portion of my Google WIFI?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 09:31 AM PDT

About eight months ago I was in a spot where my consumer grade wifi router (TPLINK) started dropping connections constantly and I needed to find a replacement. I started searching for information on a good router to buy. I found tons of sites that gave me lists of great routers only to find when I followed their affiliate links that these routers were really poorly rated on Amazon. I started to distrust what I was finding.

I had heard the buzz about mesh networking and decided to give the Google WIFI a try. I purchased a single unit. This proved to work as it didn't drop connections, but the coverage footprint was much smaller than any other router I've owned in the past. My home is about 2000 sq/ft. My kids are growing up and now have a couple devices. My oldest told me she has poor reception so I added a AP and it helped some. Yesterday my wife told me that her phone is running slow and it only runs slow at home. Couple that with connection issues to my outdoor WIFI camera and now I'm yet again in the market for something that can give me a good WIFI signal.

I've read about the Ubiquiti products and I see they get stellar reviews. Money is always an issue. I certainly can afford to get a UAP-LR at around $80. Can I couple this with my Google WIFI device to provide better WIFI coverage? I can't swing the extra $100 for the Ubiquiti USG right now but could possibly look at doing that in the future.

TLDR; Can I add the Ubiquiti UAP-LR to Google WIFI to expand my WIFI coverage footprint?

    Remote connection to work computer

Hello, I work in a small company where our IT person is no longer involved. We had been using teamviewer to remotely access our work computer (which we left on) from outside the office. However we have now found out we would have to pay quite a bit to keep this up. I was under the impression you could use windows remote desktop ability for free however I cant seem to get this working although I maybe following the wrong guide. Can anyone advise how to do this and also whether this is the best/cost effective way to do this. Many thanks.

    Router and Switch Problem

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 11:14 AM PDT

I have a router/modem connected to a switch which then goes off and connects to everything else. The problem that I am having is that my router is working for 3 out of 4 ports connected they have solid green lights but the 4th port which is connected to my switch is blinking orange. When I check the switch all the lights are blinking orange which should mean they are working but my computer can't connect to the internet. I have a few ports for my ip camera and the rest for my devices that are connect via ethernet. It was working fine earlier but it just stopped working earlier this morning.

    Top MoCA adapters?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 11:05 AM PDT

Actiontec isn't available in Germany. I just see a bunch of companies I've never heard of like with almost no reviews.

Any suggestions for a MoCA adapter that isn't Actiontec?
