Affiliate Links - Discussion on Changes and Updates (Regular User Input Wanted)

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 10:20 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

So we've been planning on having this discussion for a while now... And it's time to have this conversation. Basically the affiliate links on the sub have been getting worse and worse. We've been seeing lazy links, ignoring advice given based on data, possible vote manipulation, linking above the asked pricepoints, and users complaining about the links on this sub.

So it's time to do something about it. As of right now the current plan is to phase them out of the subreddit. If you're a regular user and you don't want this to happen or have alternative ideas make your voice heard down below.

Basically we only see a few possible options:

    1. Ban all affiliate linkers (Current plan)
    2. Set much stricter guidelines on linkers content with much harsher enforcement (A lot more work for the mod team and still somewhat hard to enforce)
    3. Do nothing

But basically some examples of problems we (the mods) see are that laptops are recommended that have known issues with firmware or quality control, laptops that are known to thermal throttle, or laptops that don't fit the request well. A few examples are the Aero 15 where everyone who has bought one on the Discord server has hated it with thermal and quality issues. The MSI GS65 which throttles, the 8th gen Helios 300 which throttles. There are a lot more examples than this, these are just some of the more common ones we see.

Originally we allowed them to get more responses to posts that were going unanswered, but right now we feel no advice is sometimes better than bad.

    Make your voice heard below.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

As usual join the Discord server if you want faster advice or a more 2 way conversation: https://discordapp.com/invite/pes68JM

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? NOT AT ALL

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. ANY

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 OR 17 INCHES

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. NO. I WANT TO WATCH PORN AND MAYBE PLAY GAMES

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? RUNESCAPE

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SPECIALIZED SCREEN FOR VIEWING HD MOVIES OR JUST HAVING THE BEST QUALITY POSSIBLE

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was browsing a dell catalog and saw they had some laptops with specialized HD screens? Is that even possible now? Anyway I was planning on watching some HD videos, maybe 4k stuff.

I need help in picking Zephyrus M, Zephyrus S or MSI GS65

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 04:10 AM PDT

Title. To start off I'm a student and the one of the main purpose why I choose a laptop is that generally i can play games but I also use it for requirements (such as typing some paper, powerpoint presentations and sometimes edit some videos) also I like editing photos using lightroom and photoshop but cant edit well having a "not-so-good" laptop and I was wondering what should be the better option in comparing those three and have a decent experience with it and i think i find it best if I ask the question here.

    Games

    • I play some games such as League of legends, CS:GO, Monster Hunter Worlds, Rainbow 6 Seige, and sometimes some open world games

    Video Render/Photo Editing

    • this is one of my concerns since my current laptop is having a hard time doing such things and sometimes even cannot edit/render, although not really necessary to have but it would be better if I can improve it

    Thermals

    • This is my primary concern since i my current PC throttles on some games and i know it affects the performance and lifespan of a laptop and i'm really trying to prevent it from happening

PS: i should note that i live in a tropical country Philippines and temperature here is usually around 22-30°C or 72-86°F for US folks there. And im sorry in advance for my grammar mistakes and format im using my phone

Looking for a laptop to replace my 2015 XPS 13.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:52 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1700, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like a balance of battery life and power. A significant upgrade from my XPS is preferred, with an emphasis on power.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Big gaming types are a no-go, but I'm not too picky when it comes to form factor, as long as it's not a huge hassle to get in and out of a medium-sized backpack.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"-17". Bigger is okay if specs are there.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I don't play many games. I play TF2, a little DOTA 2, and some single-player steam games. My XPS can't run Binding of Isaac on battery power without stuttering, much less DOTA, so I obviously need something more powerful than that, but I don't need it to be bleeding edge. I also use Sibelius, and I'd really like that to run smoothly.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't play many graphically intensive games. If I can run things like Dishonored at medium to high quality, that's enough.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen is a huge plus. A keyboard and trackpad that don't make me hate myself are necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like this to be as future proof as possible in terms of computing power. Gaming is important to me, but secondary. I'd like to be able to stare at the display and not detect individual pixels.

    Thanks for your help!

    Budget and Country

    Under 1k, Ireland

    Specs
I'd like decent specs, intel i7 if possible but i5 is ok. Battery life isn't that important (although it would be nice). Not 2-in-1.

    Weight and Thickness

Weight isn't important, niether is thickness.

    Os

    Windows 10/7

    Screen size

    Not important, nor is resolution

    Programs

I'll be using Unity and Blender

    Specific Specs?

HDMI port, usb A, intel i7/i5

    Finishing touches

I don't want to future-proof my laptop, I just want on that can do the things I require it to do.

    Thank You!

Lightweight laptop for casual video editing and gaming

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:02 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000, Turkey

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Doesn't have to be a 2 in 1. 8 hours of battery would be enough.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very. I'll carry it frequently. Maximum 1.5 kilograms (3.3 lbs)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. at least full HD (1920x1080)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want to use it for video editing but nothing with special effects. I'm a casual gamer. I want to be able to run the latest games but they don't need to run at full graphics. Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, Witcher 3

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? AAA games from last few years. 50 fps would be enough.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was thinking of buying a Macbook Air but I don't think I could play all the games I want on a Mac. I'm actually looking for a Windows equivalent. I looked at Asus Zenbook and Lenovo Ideapad models. They look pretty decent. But I'm not sure about the gaming experience. I want to use this laptop for at least 5 years. So it would be better to have 8th gen intel processor and upgradble RAM. I would need at least 256 GB of storage. The more the better.

    Looking for something for college

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:47 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: About £300-350. UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, I want it to carry around the house and places etc but won't be hauling it about everywhere

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15 inch, nothing small but nothing too clunky either

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, maybe occasionally photoshop but it isn't a necessity

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like a decent touchpad (I don't know anything about the technicals but one that is sensitive but not overly sensitive I guess). And a keyboard that is more flat than not flat if that makes sense as opposed to clunky keys. Would also like a HDMI port, USB port and preferably access for a SIM card

It's mainly to do college work on Excel, Word etc. As well as watch films etc. I was initially thinking something like the Lenovo Idepead 330s.

Need a replacement for my 2011 Macbook pro basic workhorse. Pref 17". Budget flexible but prefer <$1400AUD. Australia.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:19 AM PDT

My 2011 Macbook pro is starting to give up the ghost. When I purchased it, it was for intensive graphics programs for my university, which is no longer relevant. My new one will be a permanent desk laptop. I will primarily be using it for Work(google docs almost exclusively), Uni(again, google docs, digital text books, and powerpoint) and entertainment(online streaming). I have a 24inch 2nd monitor to dual screen with.
    Wants/priority
    - Larger screen - 17 inch if possible - Durable/reliable - I'm not one to replace a computer very often, would like it to last a long time.
    - Lots of access for USB/peripherals etc
    - Feels nice to type on
    - Cheap is good, but as long as I get good value

    Don't care/irrelevant
    - battery(will be plugged in all the time)
    - Weight/portability
    - Don't need anything special when it comes to speed/graphics, but would like something relatively modern.
    - Fancy things like fingerprint scanners etc - completely don't care

My budget is flexible, but from looking around I can see I am looking at at least $1200(AUD) ish just for the screen size. Any recommendations?

University and Business Laptop ~$600 Budget.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 12:21 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Top end of my budget is $600, United States.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 not preferred, specs and battery life are a priority.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important. It is going to be a daily use laptop for university and travel.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I might occasionally use it for light gaming but the primary uses will be for document writing, adobe suite, and Microsoft office. No video editing/CAD.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The games are a low priority but would be CSGO and DOTA2 at low-medium settings with 60+ FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? The biggest requirement for me is build quality and reliability. Other than that a decent keyboard would be preferable.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. After some research of my own using mainstream review websites and by just looking at specs/price I've found the ASUS VivoBook F510UA-AH55 and the Acer Aspire E 15 (i5 configuration). If I could get some advice on which of these are better or what a better alternative is I would appreciate it greatly.

    Laptop mainly for video editing.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 11:06 AM PDT

Just got the new GoPro Hero 7 Black. Upgraded from the H4. My current laptop was ok for editing, although did struggle with bigger files. It was just a regular $500 Samsung laptop from Best Buy. Nothing amazing. I've been looking to upgrade for a while, and now even more with the H265 codec that the new GoPro uses. Current laptop can't even play more than 2 seconds of video. Tried DivX, vlc, codec packs. CPU bogs down.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1500 is max, hoping to stay around $1000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly Adobe Premier

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Ultra 60fps at 1080 is what I hope, but won't really be gaming much with it

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No specific requirements

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I record at 4k 60fps Wide

Thinking of replacing 4 year old laptop for same quality or better laptop

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 07:42 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1,000 USD in America

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 8 Hour battery life if possible, the length isn't a determinant because I can always get an external power supply if it starts dying within 3 hours.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The size doesn't matter, nor does the weight. If I am using it, it'll be on a desk.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Larger than 14 inches diagonal.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD and gaming. I believe that if it can run games at a decent quality, then CAD should be fine.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I will always opt for the highest FPS possible, but I would prefer medium graphics. The most graphically intense game I would play is HOI4

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No touch screens. The keyboard should have a numpad. Ideally, the keys on the keyboard are about an inch in area.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Specifications of my laptop: https://www.cnet.com/products/lenovo-ideapad-z580/specs/ Some of the descriptions are confusing to me, like the CPU/Chipset(4 different processors are listed, yet only the intel i5 is listed on the computer as a sticky tag), and the specifications (like what exactly is a chipset)

8 GB of RAM or more, stronger processor than intel core i5, multiple core processor if possible, graphics or video card if it would help the laptop in not overheating and help the computer process faster. Additionally, is there a way to have multiple USB slots if the computer only has 1? If I had a flashdrive, an external fan, and another mouse, could I plug all 3 into a device which connects to the computer using one USB slot and would all 3 work? Additionally again, is it possible to "upgrade" laptops? Because I've heard that the laptop has extra ram slots, so wouldn't it be possible to buy more and install them or would that be too involved/dangerous? And a harddrive memory upwards of 600 GB

Need a laptop for music production and gaming. <2100CAD

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. n/a

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm mostly going to play PUBG, Insurgency, ARMA and some Open World/RPGs. I want to play at high settings.

Looking for a good travel gaming laptop, under $1500

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 05:15 PM PDT

I travel five days a week for work, and I'm looking for a good gaming laptop to take on the road. Looking for something light, durable enough to handle getting bumped around in a backpack/suitcase, and with some decent specs.

Total budget and country of purchase: $1500, USA

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money, don't care about 2 in 1 or battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is important since I'll be carrying it through the airport. Thinness doesn't matter. Needs to be reasonably durable.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming only

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Paradox games (CK2, EU4, Stellaris, etc) should run through the endgame without lag

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Reliable laptop for school/work/games <$2600

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 07:32 PM PDT

I am about to go to college to pursue a CS degree and want a laptop that will last me 5 years of schooling and a little longer. * Total budget and country of purchase: -I want this laptop to be under $2600 USD-

-Weight and thinness are not the most important thing to me but i would prefer for it to look professional for when I need to give presentations-

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows and Linux-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -I feel like 17 inches is too big so preferably 13-16 inches, but if outside these specifications it doesn't matter that much-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -I want to use this laptop to game and do engineering schoolwork-

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -Better quality preferred but I wont cry if I can't play every game at Ultra 120fps-

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -must be reliable (easily last through college) with a good keyboard-

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -Good battery that can easily last me all day-

    What about MSI GS65

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 07:18 PM PDT

I want to buy this laptop but I have a really big question about it:

    - Basically, it is about the cooling system, does it make noise when you are just using word, chrome or something like that? There are some devices that just turn off the fan when they're not required.

Could someone please suggest me a laptop based on the specs below?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 08:14 AM PDT

    Country: Germany

    Budget: €1000 max

    Processor: i5 or i7

Graphics: nvidia or amd (not a hardcore gamer, but would like decent gpu for casual gaming)

    RAM: atleast 8 gb

    Storage: 1TB HDD

    Operating System: Windows

Additional Info: Battery life should be very good. Looking for thin bezels. Backlit keyboard would be nice but it'd be okay without it too.

    That's all, thank you.

$3000 - Beautiful, slim, powerful laptop that can use an eGPU

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 06:46 PM PDT

I'm looking for a new laptop that looks gorgeous and is powerful for $3000. I'm planning to get an eGPU later to play games (Dragon Ball FighterZ and Fortnite) so it also needs a Thunderbolt 3 with 4 PCI-e lanes. Also, since I'm asking questions, any thoughts on the new Nvidia RTX 2070 and 2080 cards? Will they be worth it?

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

$3000 (can go a little above in necessary), USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Just that it looks pretty. For example, I think the Huawei MateBook X Pro is pretty, but I have security concerns with Huawei.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Very important. I'd like something thin but powerful. I'm tempted by the Razer Blade 15 (.66 inch) but I've heard horrible things about their QA.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

15 would be nice, but I can do less if there's something perfect out there aside from screen size

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Yes, but I will hookup an eGPU to run these:

    -Fortnite

    -Dragon Ball Fighterz

    -Photoshop

    -Dolphin (Smash Melee Netplay)

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

60 FPS at the highest setting (with eGPU)

    -Dragon Ball Fighterz

    -Photoshop

    -Dolphin (Smash Melee Netplay)

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Good build quality - something that will last at least 5 years

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I'm leaning towards getting the Razer Core X as my eGPU enclosure. Any thoughts? Anything better?

Also, if possible, an 8th gen Intel i7 would be nice.

Looking to upgrade my Mid 2014 MacBook Pro w/ Retina

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 02:53 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Ideally no greater than $1800, United States

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Good battery life and best specs.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Fairly important. My MacBook Pro is about 3 pounds and I wouldn't want anything heavier.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

I'm only familiar with Windows or Mac. I don't want Linux. Would be willing to learn Chrome OS if necessary

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    13-15 inches

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Microsoft Office, Steam...I can't think of anything else tbh. I'm an RN, so graphic design isn't a huge part of the job. I suppose photo editing would be nice, but again, not a requirement.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I may do some gaming on Steam, probably just games such as The Wolf Among Us by Telltale though (RIP).

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Definitely want reliable build quality. Fingerprint reader would be great too. I think I can work with any keyboard.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I'm not at all technical and I don't understand most computer specs terms, so I apologize in advance if I sound really stupid in my replies or in the body of this post. My brother is a comp sci major, my ex is a software engineer, and my dad is extremely good with computers as well. I've grown up with the best laptops and seen how well they work and run, and I definitely want the best for myself now too.
