    Simple Questions - September 23, 2018

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Weird liquid inside of my rig, fast forward 3 days (now) and my screen goes white and pc turns on by itself!?!?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 11:11 PM PDT

I'll give you some context, I build my pc a couple of months ago, everything went fine and dandy. A couple of days ago, I notice through the acrilic window of my case a weird substance on top of my hdd tray, then saw the same "liquid" on the outside around the edges of the top of the case. I opened the case and cleaned it, I was very concerned about wtf that substance was 'cause i'm a 100% sure nothing was spilled on my pc. I forgot about it eventually. Today, around 30 minutes ago, while playing some games, my screen froze and slowly went white. I freak out. Immediately shut down my pc, and, weirdly enough, it turned on immediately by itself and white screen didn't go away. Tried shutting it down again and it turned itself on once more. At this point my freak out level is ssj level, so i just pull the plug of both pc and monitor.

What do you guys think is happening with my desktop? Do you think this substance that I found days ago has something to do with the white screen or the fact that my computer wants to be turned on by its own will?

    This are my specs:

Monitor: Samsung LS22F355 CPU: Pentium G4560 Mobo: MSI h110m pro vh plus Psu: EVGA 430w Ram: 2x 4gb ballistix Ssd: crucial 120gb Hdd: wd 320gb (this one has like 8 years doing it's thing, thought it might be useful info)

Thank you in advance and sorry if my grammar is a bit awful, English isn't my primary language, I do my best :)

    Edit:

Here you have pics of where the liquid was on the inside, and also found some more on the outside http://imgur.com/gallery/ANpqH3v

Here you have pictures of the motherboard, everything looks fine to me but I ain't no expert. http://imgur.com/gallery/75iNoFc

    Edit 2: http://imgur.com/gallery/sLDDOh5 http://imgur.com/gallery/P7F71Qm

Alright, my screen it's fucked, tested it with my brother's laptop, I'll ask for a replacement. Hopefully this substance I found is something not related and won't give me problems, since I didn't see anything wrong with the Mobo.

XB270HU owners, want to feel like you've got a better brand new monitor?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 01:57 AM PDT

Here's a trick to get your monitor looking its best. I've used this method for a long time, but have never seen anyone else realize this.

So the trick is that there is a direct relation between your custom color temperature settings and your contrast. For example, if you put the contrast all the way up, and the color temp RGB's all the way down, you get a decent image. The same applies if you put the color temp RGB all the way up, and the contrast all the way down.

You can test this out to see the kind of effect you get on your image. When you push it to extremes you don't get the greatest image, it can be either too blown out or a little under exposed looking. You basically set the opposite of whatever the other setting is, so if you set one to 20, you subtract 20 from the other at maximum. You can experiment, but when you set it just right, you get some magic.

    So the good settings are:

    Contrast: 70

    Color Temp RGB: 30, 30, 30.

You can tweak the RGB a tick or two to get the colors balanced to be neutral if there's some color cast, I tend to just tick the red up to make the picture warmer.

All of this assumes that your systems gamma is configured properly at 2.2 for best results. It's best to set gamma visually with something like this: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gamma_calibration.php, since values in your systems settings won't necessarily equal 2.2 numerically. For example in my Nvidia control panel, the gamma is set to 0.96, the monitor menu gamma is 2.2, and the visual gamma from the gamma calibration link is visually at 2.2, which means everything's perfect.

What does this setting achieve? It gives you better contrast, colors pop more without being over saturated or blown out or blacks crushed, gives smoother gradients, the whole picture just looks better in general.....and passes monitor calibration tests like the Logam site, so there's nothing funky going on where the picture looks more punchy but suffers in other areas. I think it really does give you the full potential of the monitor. Works especially well with ULMB.

    Just give it a try!

Asking for advice, my 2012 gaming rig died, 99% sure its the mobo since I can’t even get into bios. I don’t have the funds for a new beast but would like to put my MSI Gtx 970 4gb in a $500 machine just to have something. What’re my best options? Thanks for the input.

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 02:36 PM PDT

As the title says, I'm looking for a 500 dollar pc to build or buy minus the gpu that can hold me off for just a year or two as I recover financially. I do a lot a work in gms 2 and my 200 dollar laptop is not cutting it for me. I would just like some input and advice as to what I should go with. I know the smartest option would be to wait but I don't really want to wait, I'm gonna throw it on the credit card and pay it off over a few months just to have something to be able to sufficiently program and moderately game on. Thank you for the help in advance.

Finally finished my build. 1st time building a water cooled system and decided to skip the baby steps and jump straight into the deep end. It is a mini itx system with both the radiator and reservoir mounted externally.

Had a lot a fun building it but a mountain of headaches. The case looks great but is a nightmare to build in. I had no idea mounting a hard drive could possibly be that difficult. Regardless I am super happy with the result and temps are great. Low 30s for idle and sub 60 under load. Pics and parts are at the top.

I just noticed that the GPU is on a great deal and there's an additional $25 mail in rebate for it! (But only lasts until 11PM today!)

Are the components compatible with each other? My budget is about $1200~1300 (CAD). I'm going to connect this PC to my TV that supports 1080p and 4K. I did some research around and it seems like the 1070 Ti does OK (like 30~45 fps). I was wondering if I lowered the settings of the games to medium if I could get 60fps+ on 4K? I can't afford a 1080 (Ti) and feel a bit iffy about 2nd hand parts.

My younger brother told me he has $1500 to spend on a PC build and came to me for advice. He has no PC gaming experience, but I thought I would try to build him a system that would last for a while. I put together a list rather quickly and could use some advice.

Most comfortable computer chair for under $400?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 02:30 PM PDT

A while ago I bought an office chair from Wayfair to go with my desk and gaming computer. Its not the most comfortable, and weirdly, the armrests don't go down enough that its comfortable for my arms

I figure, since I program all day on my computer, and I play video games, I might as well get a comfortable chair

    What do you guys recommend?

    Good Upgrades

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 01:52 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and [rules]

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

1080p 144hz for the next couple of years, in games like Black ops 4, And rainbow six siege, but mostly BO4, maybe some streaming.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080 144hz, high-ultra settings, in BO4, in blackout and mutiplayer i'll have shadows off and some stuff turned down for a better fps, in zombies im gonna try to go as high as i can graphically.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Plan on using Christmas money, so probably like 800 - 1000$

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA, FL

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/t3LLbX

Provide any additional details you wish below.

My current build is a ryzen 3 1200, gtx 1050, 2x4 crucial ballsitx sport lp 2400, a b350 tomahawk, 1tb WD blue HD, 240 gb SSD, 550w EVGA 50+ gold PSU, corsair carbide 100r, and a logitech G502, a HP 23.8 inch 24w 1080p IPS monitor, a kitchen chair, hyperx cloud 2, razer blackwidow ultimate, and a ikea linnmon. I Want it to be decently quiet.

    Is $800 a good price for a laptop equipped with a GTX 1060 6GB?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 01:47 PM PDT

Sorry if I posted in the wrong sub because I don't know what sub I should ask this question. I'm about to leave the country for a few months and not sure if I even come back to the same city. So I have to sell my rig and try something portable until I can find a place to settle down for my new work contract. I don't play many super demanding game so a GTX 1060 GB is enough for 1080p gaming. I looked around and found a Dell with i5 CPU and GTX 1060 6GB on Microcenter for like $750 plus tax (total to around $800) and that's pretty much the lowest price for a laptop equipped with a discreet GPU. In that price range I normally find 1050 or 1050ti. Other laptop with GTX 1070 will cost at least 1.5k.

    So, is $800 a decent price for a laptop with a GTX 1060 6GB?

What ram should I pair with a Ryzen 2600 for gaming/casual overclocking?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 01:32 PM PDT

So my MSI Z97 Gaming 5 has shit the bed. At least that's what I think the issue is after troubleshooting all day yesterday. I literally have to reinstall windows every time I shut down right now. If I change anything from default in the bios windows won't install.

I'm thinking about getting a MSI B450 Tomahawk and a Ryzen 5 2600. I cant decide what memory to get. Price is not an issue as long as it makes sense. Like buying 4000MHZ ram when Ryzen won't go that high. I only want two 8GB sticks. I'm thinking this as it seems to have the lowest CAS and price @ 3200MHZ. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/cvGj4D/team-dark-pro-16gb-2-x-8gb-ddr4-3200-memory-tdpgd416g3200hc14adc01

Any suggestions? Should I consider getting something higher than 3200 MHZ? I will be overclocking and don't do anything more demanding than gaming @ 3440x1440 119HZ. I've also had issues finding resources to research how ram speed and timings affect Ryzen 2XXX if someone could hook me up w/some links or point me in the right direction.

    Trouble with SSD

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 02:08 PM PDT

My brother's been helping me put together a PC, but we've run into an issue and even he's stumped. We got everything working, the PC is able to turn on and run the BIOS, but we've run into a problem concerning the SSD. We first tried booting the SSD that I got with some of the other parts; it was from a family friends so we thought it might already have windows installed and I thought we'd be able to get going with a free copy of windows. We plugged it all in, both to the MoBo and the PSU, and when we flipped the switch and jumpstarted the MoBo using a screwdriver to connect the power pins, there was a popping sound from the SSD and the board wasnt able to boot properly. We disconnected the SSD and made sure everything was ok, and it was. When we tried again with the SSD it all turned on fine, no pop from the SSD, but it went to the BIOS again. We thought maybe it was a broken SSD that had been given along with the rest of the spare parts, so we tried again with another SSD we had lying around, this one from an old laptop, and the same thing played out. We tried putting the SSD back into my laptop, and it did not work.

The PSU we are using is an EVGA 850, and the SSD's were one samsung 250GB model, and the other one was from my ASUS ROG laptop from 2014. It should also be noted that all of this was done outside of any case, just laid out on a table.

We're hoping someone here may be able to help us figure this out, so any tips or even hunches would be appreciated.

[Build Help] Trying to build first gaming desktop

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 04:16 PM PDT

Hello, always had a gaming laptop and been wanting to upgrade for awhile. Around december, I will have around $2k to splurge on a desktop not including peripherals. I was thinking about these two builds, (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ByzwCb) & (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Nf9ByX), any tips/advice? I would like to splurge 2k on this so doing a budget gaming pc for $1k is not what I want. Planning to be playing games such as BF5/BF1, Pubg, Warframe, Ark Survival, etc. on 1440p 144hz

Are 32” monitors really that bad...?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 02:03 PM PDT

I posted this at an odd time earlier and got barely any views. Sorry if it was actually just a rubbish post and didnt get any views because of that.

Basically i had my heart set on:

    Dell S2716DG 27" GSYNC, TN, 144hz, 1440p £450 New

Then i changed to an IPS panel:

    Acer XB271HU 27" GSYNC, IPS, 165hz, 1440p £499 New

But iv just seen an open box offer of

    Acer XB321HK 32" GSYNC, IPS, 65hz, 4K £499 Open box

After writing this and looking at reviews of the 32" monitor im leaning towards the middle monitor as as nice as 4K would be (especially as iv bought a 2080ti (i know i know)) the sheer size and lack of hz is its downfall. The middle monitor seems to be the sweet spot.

    Thoughts?

Today I was using Photoshop and it randomly froze, came back to life again. About an hour later it crashed. I was doing some pretty heavy tasks and I just assumed I ran out of ram (I only have 8GB). I got the blue screen and it said "memory management".

Restarted and was prompted to a black screen that says "Please enter a valid boot device".

My SSD is definitely detected in the BIOS. I plugged the SATA cable out/in again but still doesn't work. I tried turning the power off/on, pulled my ram out and put it back in. I tried to change the boot settings a bunch of times in my BIOS but that didn't help either.

My first thought was that my SSD may be dead but it is still being detected? I am unsure of what to do next and could use some advice.

I also tried to use a live usb to try and diagnose problems but it said it didn't find any.

    2080 or 1080Ti?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 11:47 PM PDT

Gents, newbie here, should I get 1080ti or 2080 if the price point is the same? Some coworker suggested 1080ti as it have 11gb vram compared to 2080 which only got 8gb. But some people suggest the latter for future proofing. Just wondering what do u guys think.

    Thanks in advance.

Edit: Thanks everyone for the replies. Appreciate it! I decided to get the 2080. For people asking why it has same price point when 1080ti is clearly cheaper, it is because it will be a gift from someone.

    Thoughts on buying used GPUs

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 03:24 PM PDT

Just wondering peoples thoughts on buying used graphics cards! Looking to upgrade from my RX480 to a 1070 and seen some good deals online. However some of the cards have been used to mine the one I'm specifically looking at has a couple months of mining is that a huge red flag? What should I check when I go see the card other then if it's working ?

This pops up when I boot. If I hit escape it says "Remote boot canceled" then I hit escape again and it boots normally.
