Windows 10 laptop shutting itself down...sort of? (X-post from r/techsupport) Posted: 12 Sep 2018 02:28 PM PDT So last night I restarted my laptop a couple times to fix a minor taskbar glitch, no biggie, it worked. I used it for a few minutes to make sure everything else was fine, and then I closed the lid and went to bed. When I woke up this morning, I noticed the light on the right side was off as if the laptop was shut down, not blinking like it was asleep. I opened the lid, and sure enough, it was off. But...not completely? When I held down the button to power it back on, it came up with the Hp logo and started up very quickly, which is why I say it was "sort of" shutdown, it was a really quick boot up. Everything was normal and working fine once it was back on. I used it for about half an hour again with no issues. Closed the lid and went to do something else for 3 hours, came back, and the status light was off again. I turned it back on and the boot was again very quick, as if it wasn't fully off. What the heck happened? Once it's on, everything works totally fine. I've never actually seen it shut down before my eyes, but it appears to have done so when I wasn't near it. It couldn't be overheating, its very cool in my house today, and it doesn't feel warm. I just remembered another reason I say it was "sort of" off is because when it booted back up, none of the startup processes started happening (Steam updating, things like that), and it was also at the usual fast speed. Normally it's a bit slower the first minute or two after initial bootup. That's my best description of what happened, albeit flawed probably. What gives? Edit: Just remembered one last thing. Last night I set the power and sleep settings to go to sleep after 5 hours instead of never. But it looked like it was shutdown, not asleep. I changed it back to never and I'm gonna see if it happens again. I'm also running a full virus scan to see if it's maybe caused by malware or a virus. Update: Full virus scan complete, no threats detected. [link] [comments]
Reinstalled windows 10 Ethernet cant connect to internet Posted: 12 Sep 2018 02:02 PM PDT I was having a update boot loop (been having them for months) I always reinstall Windows 10 via flashdrive. I always have issues with getting back online after reinstall but I normally find a solution. This time I can't. I've uninstalled and updated drives I've flushed the system. I think I'm fully up to date on Windows updates except update 1803. 1803 will boot loop and then just freezes. I can't reset my network because after I click ok it literally just freezes. My internet works and it shows I'm connected via Ethernet but when I do a search via IE it just fails. I am in Windows hell and need help. [link] [comments]

Where in memory do Windows Push Notifications reside and is it possible to access them. Posted: 12 Sep 2018 04:02 PM PDT I am trying to figure out where the Windows push Notifications reside on the ram. I know they are in user service 40e86 however is there any program like volatility or mimikatz to read them or get them in plain text? [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Sep 2018 03:56 PM PDT I'm currently using windows 7 but I'm thinking about setting up dual boot with 10 to toy around in it and try a couple of Windows 10-exclusive games. I have a main C: SSD with 7 in it and a D: SSD with a bunch of games that I can easily back up. Will this work fine out of the box or is there anything special I'd need to do besides installing 10 on the D: drive? I'd rather not have both OS installs on the same drive so the main windows 7 drive remains intact in case of trouble [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Sep 2018 07:35 PM PDT First of all, let me just say that there are many, perfectly legitimate reasons to keep using Windows. There are certain Windows-only applications and if you require those, makes sense to stay. But I just wanted to let the rest of you out there to know, and something I discovered on accident trying to power a very old, slow laptop, is that Linux has come a long way. I won't get into too much detail, but it's definitely changed. I remember several years ago reading about Linux, I came across an old forum post where someone was trying to change the size of their cursor and this guy responded with some terminal script to accomplish it, and I immediately said "Fuck that" and really only imagined Linux as some DOS-like toy for uber-nerds to tinker with. Ever since using it on my secondary old laptop, I learned a lot about distros (think of them like a separate OS based on Linux) and Desktop Environment (also known as DE's, they're basically how the OS looks). Eventually, on my new powerhouse laptop I've installed Linux Mint, because it does everything I need it to do without the nonsense in Windows. Of course, if you're into stylish distros, you'll be blown away. Check out something called "KDE Plasma 5" (it's a popular Desktop Environment), it is (looks wise) superior to both Windows and Mac OS. [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 Sep 2018 07:22 PM PDT Hey Everyone, As the title implies, I am getting ready to breathe new life into an old gaming laptop (ASUS G74sx). I want to do a clean install of Windows 7 into my new SSD. My question is, will the old HDD still load normally, if I were to just physically swap it back in? Or does the act of using my OEM license key for the new clean install on the new SSD invalidate the old hard drive's windows? Bonus question: Do I have any possible option to get windows 8 or 10 on this machine with the old OEM key? I had not taken advantage of the free upgrade when it was available... Thanks!! A Question About Microsoft Account Posted: 12 Sep 2018 06:25 PM PDT Pardon me if this isn't the right sub as this is my first time having a windows laptop. I recently got a Lenovo T580 because my old macbook air isn't powerful enough to do a lot of work with Excel. When I first got it, it prompted me to create a Microsoft account which I did without problem. I read that it's advisable to have a non-admin account. Is there anyway I can create a "duplicate" of my Microsoft account, but without the admin privileges? I want to have access to programs I downloaded with the Microsoft account (I downloaded Anaconda with my Microsoft account and it isn't available on a local account I made). [link] [comments]
What does it mean when Microsoft says that Windows LTSB does not support 8th gen Intel CPU's? Posted: 12 Sep 2018 06:05 PM PDT I have a new laptop with 8th gen CPU, I can get LTSB with a legit license, my only concern is it says they don't support it. What does that mean exactly? Is there like a speed capped or something? Or they dont provide hardware for it? Basically I'm trying to see if my speed or processor will face any issues by doing this? [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 Sep 2018 09:20 AM PDT hi, when i import videos created with NVIDIA shadowplay to premiere, it kinda crops them in a way i don't want. when i then trim the same video using windows' own video app and import the video to premiere, it works just how i want it to. video that probably makes my problem more clear: https://streamable.com/l9hw9 i would be so happy if someone could help me with this, thanks! EDIT: when i look up the properties of the file on my desktop, it says it's 2560x1440. but when i look up the properties in premiere, it says it's 1920x1440. [link] [comments]
How to unlock keyboard settings in Windows 10? Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:27 PM PDT I read it's possible to active text suggestions natively in Windows 10. PIN not working all of a sudden? Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:08 PM PDT I've had the same PIN since i got the laptop and now it's saying it's incorrect. Not sure how this is possible. I was able to log in via password but this is worrying me. I have auto virus scans and nothing has come up. I don't go on any sketchy sites, not even porn lol. What's up? What could it be? Can I lock a file so it cannot be deleted or moved to another path Posted: 12 Sep 2018 07:12 AM PDT Hello Reddit! Currently at work we are having an issue of people accidently misplacing files out of certain folders and we are worried they might accidentally be deleted as well. Alot of the employees here aren't computer savy and can easily make that mistake, so is there any way to lock a file so that it cannot be moved or deleted? I beleive we are using Windows xp. Problem with Switching Harddrives Posted: 12 Sep 2018 09:04 AM PDT Have a computer problem that's stumping me. Details below. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Office got new XPS 8930's for computers. One co-worker still had an old Windows 7 PC, ran the update to 10 and attempted to put into the XPS. Now I keep getting "No Media" error. Ran the Diagnostics, no issue. And under the HD it sees that there's a 2tb drive connected. Old HD works in the old computer tower, and the HD that came with the XPS works fine. Attempted to reorder boot order as some Dell forums said this could help, no luck. Only thing I can think to try is swapping with my computer. I also have the XPS 8930, but my upgrade was from the XPS 8900, and was already Windows 10 to start. Might see if any change happens with that, but any guidance or direction would be appreciated.
