    Replacing .ico files

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 10:35 AM PDT

I'm slowly giving Windows 10 a lovely Win95-ish makeover. I'm trying to replace some icons with more old-school appropriate equivalents, but I've run into an issue.

I've used Resource Hacker for a few things, but that isn't always possible. Steam's system_tray.ico and Discord's icons in general refuse to be adjusted in this way. As an alternative I've tried doing the obvious thing and replacing the files themselves, but that triggers an odd behavior where when I rename the new image back to the required filename, it's immediately replaced with the default image. Has anyone messed around with this and found a workaround?

Is there a way to disable mouse movement with a shortcut key?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:26 AM PDT

When playing games using a controller, my mouse rests on my couch which has a slight angle to it, meaning there's a very slight movement here and there when I shift my weight. Turning the mouse upside down fixes it for the most part but it's an inelegant solution, it'd be cool if I could just press some keyboard shortcut to disable mouse movement temporarily. Any software I could use?

I want to change the location of the default user folders. How can I do these things ?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 04:04 AM PDT

I have Windows installed on my SSD, but I want the user folders (Documents, Videos...) to be on my larger HDD.

    I want to :

    • have the Explorer sidebar links for the user folders link directly to my HDD folders
    • set the HDD folder icons to the user folder defaults (which I couldn't find in the native icon list for some reason?)
    • Make the HDD folders the default user folders so that games and programs save data there automatically (basically, I want these to go into the HDD folder instead of clogging up my SSD ; if my understanding is right, considering these don't contain assets, it should have a minimal impact on load times, right?)

How can I do these ?

Chkdsk /r taking so long, what to do?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 01:17 PM PDT

My external disk could not be mounted, so i did chkdsk /r on it, and it's basically stuck on stage 4 of 5, the average rate of files processed is 2.1 files per second and i need to process 404807 files and it already after roughly 5 hours processed 35400 files, so it will take to reach stage 5 roughly 53.55 hours, what should i do?

    WIFI Sharing Scenario

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 03:01 PM PDT

So I have one computer that needs to connect to a network. Right now it has one wifi card and an ethernet port that is being used. If I were to buy 4 more wifi USB adapters, could I potentially make two more wifi hotspots come out of the same computer with three different internet shares?

I am running Windows 7 right now as well.

Windows 10 (1803) showing MAD Catz Strike 7 as removable device?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 03:37 AM PDT

Windows 10 starts to handle my keyboard as a remoavable device as soon as I install drivers for my MAD Catz Strike 7 keyboard, is there any way to get around that with perhaps a registry tweak or a option in the OS?

    Thanks.

Questions about moving Windows temp files/folders to a separate physical drive

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 02:08 PM PDT

I was having many issues with out-of-memory errors and slow performance, a lot of it due to having to temporarily move my OS drive from the SSD array it was on to a 5400RPM drive for now and having to keep the swap file small.

SSDs have gone down in price, so I got a cheap small 128GB SSD that I am using just for temporary files for now, it has helped significantly. I figured that it would be useful even once I am back on a SSD to use this SSD for all my temporary data, but I wanted to know just how far I can go with that.

I know that for applications that themselves use a temporary folder, I will need to set that on a per-app basis, that's fine, I was talking purely about os-level temporary files/folders.

I already put the swap file there, that's easy to do. I have hibernation disabled for now since being a desktop I don't really need it, but I do know how to put it on the SSD if I need to. And I read this guide on moving the two standard temp folders:

    https://www.howtogeek.com/285710/how-to-move-windows-temporary-folders-to-another-drive/

I still have four additional questions however:

    1. Is there any actual user-saved data stored in these temp folders? I know that most of the user data is stored in the AppData folders, but I also know that apparently browsers make heavy use of these temp folders. Do they only put cached data and other such-non important information in there? Or would they also store bookmarks, or login cookies, etc in there? Information that would actually impact me if I were to lose it?

    2. Are any of these necessary for Windows to start up properly or not lose anything between restarts? The issue is that I might also have to experiment with different operating system installs by swapping said drive, and I would like to re-use that SSD for temp data for all of them simply by wiping it since leaving temp data from another windows install/version could cause issues. I know that the swap file is not important between reboots, the hibernation file is but I have that disabled anyway, but I have no idea about the temp folders. Can those be deleted between reboots without issue? Also, would I still need to have the folders on the drive, but just empty, or will Windows simply re-create the temp folder that it has been set to if it does not exist?

    3. Would I need to move the contents of the existing temp files to the other drive when I change the temp folder environment path?

    4. And finally, are there any other OS-level temporary files/folders one can advise I can set to that spare drive?

So yes I know that XP is dead but the owner of this laptop is poor and can't afford anything else. Every time she tries to browse the internet using Opera or Lunascape she gets a Certificate Error message stopping her from doing anything. Anyone got a fix for this?

When I try to login it says "0x801901f4" I found out how to fix it, its by going to windows update and do this same antivirus update and its really annoying. now that fix is not even working and I am logged out of both of my accounts.

In need of help, I‘m stuck.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 08:09 AM PDT

Hi, While playing Forza Horizon 4 the other day, my PC gave me a good ol' blue screen. I had this before, mostly the automatic reboot fixes everything and I'm good to go. But this time, the automatic repair screen started and shortly after stated, that the repair was unavailable (error code was something with microsoft_store the first time and each time after that 0xc000021a). So i consulted other Forums, and quickly realized via the deactivate driver signature start option i could at least access and save important data. So, having backupped every important document and picture, i first tried the reset which maintains data but deletes programms etc. didn't work. Now i tried the complete reset and that failed too. Also, when trying to install win 7 (the base OS my pc started on) i couldn't because install.wim wasn't openable. Things I've tried so far (that didnt work): -CHKDSK -various dism commands i found online -deleting what i think was forza horizon (in the deinstall programs menu it isnt listed) -deleting .sys files without a signature (some .exe showed me which ones) -win 7 install from both iso on a usb and the original cd -safe mode (booted to the blue screen like the normal mode) -unplugging my new hdd i bought a few days ago

I just don't know what to do, as i cant even reset which was my last option, seeing how long the ~1.5TB of games will have to download again. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that i had to install the microsoft store again via the powershell command, as i think i remember that the first blue screen said something about it. If anyone knows a solution where i can at least cleanly install a new windows it'd be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Stop my computer from connecting to my phones hotspot when plugging in via USB

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 03:20 PM PDT

For the past few months I've been connecting my phone via USB solely to charge. No hotspot. I'm using a desktop computer with a wireless USB adapter for WiFi.

Last week my WiFi was not working and I decided to use my iPhone's hotspot. This was via WiFi, not USB.

Now, whenever I plug my phone in via USB it connects to hotspot via USB tethering. I do not want this, as my regular WiFi is working fine now. I set the priority of the USB hotspot to below my regular connection so it still uses the correct one, but it still attempts to connect to USB hotspot and shows "One connection" on my phone.

How do I make Windows stop this? I want to completely stop my computer from auto connecting to my phone's hotspot when plugging in via USB.

Need some help, friend's Windows computer keeps crashing

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 01:52 PM PDT

My friend Hans in Denmark has recently been experiencing severe problems, he doesn't use Reddit much and has asked for me to ask you guys for help.

He custom-made the computer because where he lives in Denmark, makes buying a pre-built computer as rather challenging. He describes the problem as when it crashes, the screen disconnects (he is unsure if the computer blue screens since the screen is just black and he has to turn it back on), his cooling fans go on full force like his computer is having a meltdown.

Also the computer runs on Windows 10 if I forgot to mention it

Advice on buying a new laptop

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 01:00 PM PDT

To start, I'm not sure which subreddit to ask this in so if you have a recommendation for another one please let me know.

I'm a college student with a pretty old HP Laptop and would like to purchase a faster, more convenient, laptop. Mine is starting to run slow, and is pretty heavy, so I am looking for one that not only runs better, but is lightweight and easy to carry around.

I'm honestly not even sure where to start or what brands to look at. Windows, HP, and Google all have laptops but which one is the best? I love the design of the macbook but I need to have windows. Are the windows laptops that double as tablets really nice, or Is there another brand or version that is closer in style to the macbook?

    Software to delete services/add-remove entries?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 12:38 PM PDT

Hey all, I remember a few years ago... Possibly more than a few, I downloaded this software which let me delete entries in Services and Add/Remove lists. I have a bunch of stuff that is stuck there that I don't want to see. I know there's a way to do it with regedit but I would have to take much more time than I want to if I do it that way.

Does anyone know of this specific software or of any software that does this? I'd really appreciate it!

Windows svchost.exe blocked from making changes from %system%.../.NET Framework.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 09:01 PM PDT

Windows svchost.exe blocked from making changes from %system%.../.NET Framework.

I've recently turned on "Controlled Folder Access" And I've gotten some issues including something from a somewhat legitimate looking svchost. I was wondering if this was just something bugging or if this may be a trojan of some sort. I've recently reset my PC and I've only installed Steam, Discord, and a few steam games all from legitimate sources. (Along w. google)

This is after I've added the real svchost.exe as a trusted app. No idea why Microsoft wouldn't add this as an official trusted app.

Is this a possibility that this can be a trojan that's sticking w. my system? How do I remove it? Is it a bug?

Please respond, and thank you. (Also, please do not mind the discord profile pictures)

Windows 7 Xbox One S Controller (Bluetooth)

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:40 AM PDT

Is there a way (no matter how difficult) to make this gamepad work with Windows 7?
(Yes, I realize this is not an issue on windows 10, no, I will not "upgrade" to windows 10, Windows 10 is trash)

It currently shows as a Bluetooth HID Device.
