Done with Apple, need new laptop for general use

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 10:25 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: I'd probably go as high as $1400 but really depends on the long term quality of what im getting, I dont want to have to shell out another $1400 in a couple years for instance. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No strong desire for 2 in 1 as I doubt I use the tablet features. Definitely want decent battery life and specs. I dont game heavily but i would like to be able to watch videos, the occasional steam game/modded minecraft without my laptop exploding. Mostly just using it for general use.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Not mac, just too many bad experiences with previous macbooks breaking way too easily and being ridiculously expensive to repair. Prefer something that can interface with my phone (samsung) so probably windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Torn between 13 and 15. Probably 15.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Microsoft office, chrome, modded minecraft, nothing that crazy

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above. Not much of a gamer but also never really had a computer capable of gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm now on my 3rd mac in 10 years which is decent but lot of money to shell out every few years. I broke my most recent one by literally gripping the screen too hard with my thumb when closing the lid. Last month the keyboard stopped working and it cost me another $100. I dont need the most durable laptop but something that wont break easily and cost a premium to fix.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I use my laptop alot between the occasional work at home, watching youtube, surfing the web, etc. I dont really do any intensive CPU things. Looking for something that I can buy now and it will last me a good couple of years that will make the purchase worthwhile. I'm regretting continuing to buy apple as I think they break too easily and they're stupidly expensive to repair. I also dont use any other apple products so nothing really interfaces that well. I was looking at the Dell XPS 13 or 15 but not sure if they're too much for what I really need and whether I can go cheaper.

    Thanks in advance!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Max of 2000 dollars, flexible within 200 dollars. USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs mainly, but still decent battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important but would be appreciated

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Size doesn't matter too much, but at least 120 hz screen if possible

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. GTA V, LoL, Vegas Pro

[US] Thin, light, 2-in-1 with discrete graphics for $1500 - does it exist?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 06:18 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1500 max, closer to $1000 preferred, U.S.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good build quality, battery life are most important; 2 in 1 is also highly desired; discrete GPU powerful enough to run something like Dark Souls 3 on medium @ 60 FPS would be great, but is the lowest priority

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, as it will be carried around all day and used for school

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15.6", not picky

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Doing some gaming, see below

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Dark Souls 3, MGS V, Witcher 3, Paladins, are some examples; shooting for medium settings 30-60 FPS

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Has to last through another 3 years of college, is going to be moved around a lot so build quality is important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I realize that there probably isn't much that ticks all these boxes in this price range, but figured I would ask. Can't buy used, since half of this budget is coming from a grant.

In need of a Gaming Laptop to replace my Macbook (~$2000USD) (Australia)

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 03:40 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

$2000-3000 AUD (~$1500-$2000 USD) in Australia. Willing to dosh out more if its more bang for the buck and worth it!

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best specs for money please!

How important is weight and thinness to you?

The lighter and thinner the better, however isn't a big requirement as it will most likely remain stationary. Need a laptop as I move from state to state a lot.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows! Pretty sick of iOS.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferably the bigger the better, however, a minimum would be 17" with a 120hz refresh rate.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly for Gaming. I play games such as Dota 2, Fortnite & Maplestory (CPU intensive game i think).

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Dota 2, high to ultra settings reaches about 120fps or higher. A good CPU for maplestory.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Reliable build
    • A decent GPU, thinking about 1060 or 1070
    • Good heat management
    • A SSD would be nice
    • Decent keyboard if possible (can always just connect a keyboard)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Since i'm in Australia, probably a laptop that can be purchased from the following websites:

pccasegear, msy, mwave, scoptec (these are probably the main pc suppliers in Australia),

But I can always get it from amazon.

    Thank you in advance!

Looking for a nice budget laptop

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 03:21 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** £300, could possibly stretch to £330. United Kingdom.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I don't care about 2 in 1. Battery life isn't really a problem; as long as it doesn't drain in an hour then it's ok. Top priority is best specs for the money.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I'll be carrying it around all day, so pretty important. However shouldn't be a deciding factor.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows. MacOS is good but way out of budget. Not Chrome OS.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Ideal size is 13 inches. 14 inches is also ok, as is 12, but anything biggrr than those (11.6, 15.6) is too much.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** If at all possible, I would like to play source games such as TF2 and GMod.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Source games - I'm ok with a low FPS as long as it's consistent. Would play on highest settings possible to get a consistent FPS.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Reliable build quality is good; I don't want some shitty plastic netbook but it doesn't have to be all metal (although that would be nice). Need a decent keyboard as I'll be doing a fair bit of writing on it.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** If this kind of question has been posted before, apologies and please direct me to it.

    Laptop for Mechanical Engineering Major

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 06:25 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $2000 - USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I would like it to have a reasonable battery life. Not picky on 2 in 1 form.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not that important. I would rather have a laptop that is a bit heavier and bigger that can consistently run software I need it to run rather than try to minimize its size and risk overheating and other issues.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    CAD - SolidWorks, MATLAB.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Don't plan on gaming too much

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I would really like to have at least 500 GBs of SSD space, a dedicated GPU, and at least an 8th generation I5 processor. Anything else is really a bonus.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

    Need a laptop for college

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 08:54 PM PDT

College freshman looking for a laptop.

Total budget and country of purchase: Probably up to $1,200ish. I'd like to pay for the quality and have it last a very long time. US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Definitely great battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Yeah I don't want to be carrying around a heavy ass laptop.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I don't really care, but I'm most familiar with Windows and Mac. I do have an iPhone but all the desktops at my house are Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 to 15.
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Microsoft office, possibly Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom and video editing (premiere pro/sony vegas/imovie?)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not a gamer.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and Q U A L I T Y. I don't want to have to keep replacing my laptop haha. A bitch is lazy
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am going to be using my laptop a lot, so battery life and portability are the biggest qualities I'm looking for.

Internet Browsing/Video Playing laptop. Don't care about screen size. USA. Less than $700

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 08:38 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $700, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't care if it's a 2 in 1, don't care at all about battery life. I guess good specs for the money are the most important to me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all. I can appreciate a thicc laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'll be installing Linux on it no matter what OS comes pre-installed, even if it already has Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I don't care about screen size. My current laptop is 13" I think, and that seems fine. I don't care about resolution.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The most resource intensive thing I'll be running is Firefox. I watch a lot of YouTube in my free time.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't plan on playing games on this laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? It would be nice if there was a docking station that I could buy with it.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm moving my desktop PC to my living room so I can play games on my TV and for a better VR setup. That means I have two 1920x1080 monitors that aren't doing anything, hence the desire for a laptop/docking station to drive them. The monitors are 1920x1080 ViewSonics with DVI and VGA ports.

At work I have a dual-core Dell Latitude with 8GB RAM that seems to work fine.

The ability to run firefox on the two DVI/VGA monitors is really the most important part.

    Dell G Series

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 02:32 PM PDT

Why buying : Sending Lenovo for repairs + finishing school.

    Budget : 800, > 1000 k (USD) if justified.

    Looking for 16 GB RAM + SSD/HDD

    Prefers: Durability, battery life, bang-for-buck.

    What for? Visual studio/SSMS + web_dev + Big Data + light_gaming + crypto?.

    Where you at? Canada

    Dell G3 i5 15" 8GB + 1TB SSHD + FULL_HD + 1050Ti => (Upgrade RAM + 1,141.28 = 1,210 cad) 882 usd

    Dell G3 i7 15" 16GB + 1.0 TB HDD + 265 SSD + IPS + 1050Ti => 1598 cad/1212 usd

    Dell G5 i7 15" 16GB + 128 SSD + 1060 + 1TB HDD + LCD =>1630cad/1310 usd

I was deciding between Lenovo models until I found out Intel's ****-H processors perform better/as good as U processors and last year's 7th gen XXXXHQ. G5 seems to be the way until I reading the buggy drivers.

That said, which one's the best bang for buck? Is it way better saving 300/400 for i5 G3 or go all the way?

Need a gaming laptop ~2300$ USD range (NZ)

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 10:05 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~2300$ USD, ordering from New Zealand so I'd prefer Amazon
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all, I don't care about weight
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The larger the better, looking for 17" minimum preferably
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly gaming on Steam
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would prefer a solid 60fps on ultra settings for singleplayer games (Looking at you Witcher 3) and 120fps minimum for competitive online games. I plan to play a lot of Paradox games like EU4 or CK2 as well.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Needs a numpad, and preferably a keyboard that isn't shit.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for a nice gaming laptop I can use for the next 4 years or so at University, so it has to be somewhat robust. I've been looking at the Acer Helios 500, but I've heard the horror stories about Acer so I've also been looking at the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M. It looks more robust than the Acer laptop but has a smaller screen, which could be a deal breaker for me. Anyone here have positive experience with the Acer Helios series? If not, is there some better alternative laptops with 17 inch displays? If all else fails just help convince me that settling with a 15 inch display won't be an eye-straining experience.

At what settings and FPS do you want?** I'd like to play The Witcher 3 or GTA V on medium/high and 60fps. Mostly, though, I want to continue to play whatever games I want for at least 2-3 years with decent frame rates. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Build quality and cooling are most important. I'd also like decent sound quality and volume. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I usually use my computer in bed or on the couch, so cooling is a big deal. I care more about build quality than having a thin, sexy laptop. However, I am a somewhat small person and I still want it to be comfortable on my lap for long stretches. I don't care much about battery life, but it would be nice to still be able to watch maybe 30 minutes of video without the charger in a couple years time. With the budget, I'm more concerned with diminishing returns than the exact number. If I have to keep using my old, broken laptop for a bit longer, I can.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 09:06 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £600 ($800) but preferably less, UK.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is more important but not necessary.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The lighter the better, more so than thinness.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Size doesn't matter but i would like 1920x1080p resolution.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Using Unity/ Unreal, Maya, and coding in Visual Studio.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Various indie games, League of Legends, CS:GO, and other triple-A games at medium settings - graphics not very important can go low for a more stable frame rate

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would also like an SSD of at least 128GB.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The cheaper the better.

    Thank you in advance!

Gaming Laptop MSI or ASUS w/ a 1070. Suggestions?

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      • Best specs for money
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      • Prefer lightweight, but it doesn't really matter.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      • Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      • N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      • Gaming and work.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      • Reliable build and low heat.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      • Preferably something with a 1070 for a bit of future proofing. NewEgg has a MSI GP Series GP63 Leopard-428 for $1500ish. Amazon has the ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX531 for $1900. Sort of torn between the two. Was hoping for suggestions?

Found a Dell G3 17 for a decent price, is this one all right?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 02:30 PM PDT

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/dell-g3-17-gaming-laptop/8w4nrpt7w424/md2w?cid=msft_web_collection&activetab=pivot:techspecstab

It's got a hefty discount. I can't find this particular one on any of the reccomended laptop threads, but it's in the same product line as some of them. I also can't find it on Dell's website either.

The graphics card and processor seem ok to me. Is it indeed good?

Looking for a laptop for university - Screen size unimportant, budget under £500. (UK)

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 12:25 PM PDT

    Hey everyone

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget is about £500 but if a decent machine can be found for less I will consider it. In the UK (Northern Ireland)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't think I need a 2 in 1, specifications are the highest priority but battery life is important too.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Neither are huge to me but weight is more important than thinness.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will mostly be Microsoft office and youtube and general web surfing. May play some casual more low-spec games but the games I play will be dependent on the laptop rather than the other way round.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I tend to play strategy games like Civ V and Crusader kings 2 as well as isometric rpgs like the Shadowrun games. I prioritise performance over graphics. Playing games would be a nice bonus to this machine but isn't my first priority.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A decent keyboard and touchpad would be nice but not necessarily required. I don't particularly need a touch screen.

Thank you to everyone, I'm really glad subreddits like this exist.
