Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:02 PM PDT As many of you are aware, we trialed an advertising thread. I for one think it was a resounding failure. Some used it, but it really didn't go anywhere. I also can tell you it did nothing for the unsolicited advertisements (not that I expected anything there anyway). Today the mod team was approached by a company, asking permission to post something about an event they are hosting wherein people can enter a raffle for networking equipment. A little talking amongst the mod team, and we're thinking of allowing such posts provided they ask the mods first, and that there's no direct selling of products. Now I can already see some of you reaching for your tinfoil hats. The mods here do not benefit from this one bit (unless they enter a raffle on their own, just like everyone else). Fresh advertisement posts and Amazon affiliate links are still banned. Mentions of products are still only to be in reply to someone asking a question, and the product must be relevant. However, provided there's permission given we're thinking of allowing posts along the lines of raffles/events where you win stuff as acceptable forms of advertisement. Unsolicited posts of that nature without permission will still get nuked and the user perma-banned, as is the standard handling of spam bots now. For those who are still tensing up, these types of posts very rarely come up. I think the last time this actually happened was over a year ago at this point. The main sub etiquette post will be altered soon to suit the above. That's not to say that's the end of discussion. We still want to hear your thoughts, and/or if you have any suggestions to better handle things of this nature. [link] [comments] |
'Network Security' for teenage sleepovers Posted: 12 Sep 2018 06:00 PM PDT Hi, Please forgive me if this is the wrong subreddit. My son is in highschool and has friends over to play video games, watch netflix, and lord knows what else. I've been trying to learn what I can about network security and I've learned some, but I feel like I'm still very lacking. I have a PFSense box with not the newest firmware (2.4.0 RELEASE), but it's vanilla with no add-ons. I'm not concerned with them watching porn , and I definitely don't want logs of the websites; I'm concerned about him and/or his friends downloading torrents at my house and having my ISP on my ass. I'm also concerned about if they're able to access my computer/laptop from theirs if they're on our wifi/plugged into the wall? I'm afraid the teens of this age know so much more than I do, but I want to put on the front that I have my network under control. tl;dr How do I tighten up my network/pfsense against these disgusting piglets? Any advice/links are much appreciated!! [link] [comments] |
My 3 year long "TIFU" internet horror story Posted: 12 Sep 2018 06:18 AM PDT Just found the sub, thought I'd let you guys know about the horror story I've lived through for the past three years. 18 years old, Comp Science student who takes a particular interest in networking. My dad knows a thing or two, but a fair bit less than myself .However since he set up the network, I'm not allowed to "configure" it. That's the context, now for the shit show. Moved into our new house 3 years ago. Simple enough set up: router with the standard settings, lot of wireless devices and wired devices were done through power-line adapters, with the wonderful ISP that is TalkTalk. The internet speeds were pretty good, 70 MB down at it's peak, upload of 3 MB. Only problem with the ISP: some weird sine-curve looking connection status. Like seriously, you were connected at 70 MB, 5 minutes later you were down to 100 KB, 5 minutes later back up to 70. Every day. Consistently. Okay. Connection's dropping all the time, "let's add in some boosters" says my dad. Add in some cheap power-line boosters. Problem doesn't get fixed at all. We decided we'd had enough and with some convincing and some serious looking at the contract, we were able to leave the ISP and instead switched to Virgin Media. 200 MB down, 11 MB up for a cheaper price. It seemed like the savior we needed after the horror we were having. Little did we know, this was where we really fucked up. We join Virgin. They send out their amazing Super Hub 3.0. Do a little bit of googling into the Super Hub 3 and you'll soon realise that if you could put hell in a box, you'd be looking at that. I went from an unreliable connection to straight up no connection half the time. Problem was, this time around it was just my devices. My dad's devices were absolutely fine since he spent his life about 40 cm away from the router. I get told that it's the way I've set my devices up, that I've obviously messed about with the settings. Had to factory reset absolutely everything, wired or wireless, it did not help it. There I am trying to play some multiplayer games on my wired PC. Ethernet completely broke down on me, would not connect. Switched out the cables, invested in a wireless adapter. Couldn't get it to get a reliable connection. Every time it seemed like it was solved, there went the connection. Did some digging one day, turns out my adapters weren't being assigned IPs. Tried the PS4, tried my S8. All of them weren't getting IPs. Like I said earlier on, my dad didn't want me touching the network. This is where I decided, fuck it. Into the router settings, static IP set up for my devices and a quick router restart. It was like Christmas. Everything working beautifully. Reliable connections on all my devices for the first time in 3 years. Fast forward to today. Ethernet devices were still working fine but wireless broke down again the past few days. Zero connection on anything. It's already a pretty long post so I'll skip the fine details - remember those power line boosters my dad bought right when we started having problems. Decided to unplug them. It's been two hours. The wireless has miraculously not had a problem since. The signal is the strongest it's been on my devices this entire time. If there's a moral to the story, it's not to cheap out on your network peripherals. Turns out they might end up causing you a 3 year long migraine. Update (18:46): It fucking broke again Update (19:04): Turns out my phone has automatically been connected to 5 Ghz. I'm in the furthest room from the router and obviously 5 Ghz has a shorter range. Let's see if this is the final fix. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Sep 2018 07:47 PM PDT First some background info. My house burned down and was rebuilt. In the rebuild I had the contractor run cat and coax cables to every room. However, they left all the cables hanging out of the back of the house. I believe its fine for the coax cables but definitely not how the cat cables should have been installed. Am I correct in thinking that the cat cables should have been ran to somewhere indoors where they could connect to a switch and then to the router? Currently I am considering getting an outdoor internet switch where they can all connect and then running one cable back inside to the router. Is there a better way to accomplish this? Possible to host more than one website with one DDNS domain? Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT I have a home server running apache, and I'd like to have both a nextcloud instance as well as a wordpress site hosted on it. However, I only have one DDNS domain, and I'm pretty sure my router can only support one DDNS domain at a time (I'll double check but I'm pretty sure that's the case). So I'm just curious, if I want to host two separate sites (ie mynextcloud.ddns.net and mywordpress.ddns.net), do I need to have two separate DDNS domains? Or can I somehow do it with one? I understand I need to create virtualhosts in Apache and open ports 80/443 on my router, I'm just not quite grasping how to go from Internet > DDNS > my router > my server > choose either nextcloud or wordpress I'm not necessarily looking for a walkthrough, I just feel like there's something conceptually that I'm missing here if someone could point me in the right direction EDIT: literally every question I ask here gets downvoted and I don't understand why [link] [comments] |
I have a Synology RT2600ac router that I just bought last week. But I need some help with QoS... Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:38 PM PDT I have Frontier FiOS 100/100. But I heard the QoS for the Synology isn't as good as its somewhat sibling, the Netgear R7800 (Nighthawk X4S). (The reason why I chose the Synology though is the 'Smart Connect' band steering, something that the X4S doesn't have.) And I currently have no plans to exchange the router. So, how do I effectively run QoS through the RT2600ac? [link] [comments] |
Extending network to a 2nd building on-site? Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:33 PM PDT Have a rural property with a couple buildings. One has internet right now, other does not yet. 2nd building is ~200ft from 1st building. Do we need to run underground ethernet, or is there a P2P or mesh wireless solution that would work outdoors? Posted: 12 Sep 2018 07:17 PM PDT Ok, so, bear with me a moment. I do not think there is a situation like this one on the subreddit yet. Maybe 3 weeks ago i decided to be dumb and mess with my wifi extender. I went ahead and changed the name of the extender, and updated and restarted it. Next thing I know, I cannot connect to the internet. I had two routers at the time, one on 2.4ghz and one on both 2.4 and 5. I then realized that both the routers were not working. I restart both, but now I get very high ping and VERY low download/upload speeds. I would get 30 up and 50 down before, now i am getting barely 10 down at times and as little as 1 up. New ISP : trying to configure old router over main router and keep port forwarding Posted: 12 Sep 2018 07:09 PM PDT I had my perfect working setup with an Asus RT-AC3100 using Merlin firmware. - Some computers over DHCP, wired ethernet and Wifi - Some NAS servers on wired cable using DHCP with exposed port to the Internet Now I changed my ISP (went form cable to Bell/Virgin Fiber). My new provider comes with it's own modem/router, a moded Sagemcom 5566. I plugged the RT-AC3100 Wan into one of the Virgin/Bell Sagemcom 5566 lan port, and disabled WI-Fi over the Sagemcom. I kept the computers and servers plugged to Asus. My Sagemcom gave 192.168.2.11 to my Asus router. Asus have leased 192.168.1.x to others clients. Everything work fine, except port forwarding. What would you do? Can I disable the Sagemcom 5566 router and just keep the modem mode? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Sep 2018 05:50 PM PDT Recently moved in to an apartment that already had people in it. They have been using just the xfinity modem/router to handle the two laptops / Xbox and wireless. The signal drops in my bedroom. I picked up a new router (AC1200+) but now I'm not sure if I should set it first in line and reconnect their stuff to it and disable WiFi. Just to let the new router do it all. I'd rather just leave their setup alone, and run a single line to my room, and put the new router there. I have 4 devices that need a real connection, so this seems easier than trying a hub in my room. I run game servers, and don't want weird connection issues when playing on Xbox live. I assume the WiFi would not interfere with each other, but if I'd get better speed or less packet loss I'm willing to put in more money/effort. Thanks for any advice. [link] [comments] |
Mysterious lag on superior WiFi connection Posted: 12 Sep 2018 05:27 PM PDT So I'm having this weird issue where my Android Chess.com app is lagging, causing me to screw up in bullet games where you only have 60 seconds on the clock. Sometimes my opponent moves and my game doesn't register it for a couple seconds, which really kills when the game is this fast. It's been happening for weeks at this point. But it ONLY happens on my home WiFi. If I switch to 4G it doesn't happen, even though my home WiFi is way better. While this happens, I'm getting 80 Mb down, 10 Mb up, 7ms ping, 3ms jitter (whatever the hell that means), 0% loss, so I can't imagine why my connection could be less than stellar at these moments. There's no pattern to it. Happens anytime. My router is an Asus RT-N66U and I'm on the 2.4 network 5 feet from it. Any ideas on what could be going on or what I can do to troubleshoot? Thinking to open a business in NYC, what do i need to know? Posted: 12 Sep 2018 11:05 AM PDT Does anyone know any legal stuff about running cable and installing equipment, CCTV, access control etc. In commercial environment in NYC? Is this the right subreddit for this type of question or is there another networking one out there? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Sep 2018 04:58 PM PDT My roommates and I just upgraded to gigabit speeds, but our router is only capable of handling 300Mb/s or so. I need one WAN port and at least 4 Ethernet ports. Wifi speeds don't really matter. Coverage is fine with the dinky router our ISP sent us. So, no need to worry about that. I'm just looking for someone to point me in the right direction so I can throw money at this problem and be done with it. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
IP Cameras and Network Security Posted: 12 Sep 2018 04:57 AM PDT Hi all, I am interested in purchasing a couple of cameras for my home but have read that they can be insecure (on the network side of course) I know there are cloud based IP Cameras which i assume would be the least secure as they have to access the internet. I would rather have recording saved locally anyway. I have a spare CPU, RAM, and 1TB HDD ready to build a small machine for recording if it is a good option. This PC would then have no access to the internet, basically just a storage drive. I would like to know if i can securely set up a local drive on my daily PC however to save cost and space. Can anyone explain what i would need to do for a secure set up? I am not too familiar with IP cameras but have read on here a few times that they are insecure due to lack of firmware updates etc. I also recall seeing leaked home IP cameras, where someone had found many home cameras and posted them online. A lot of them were internal cameras too, so people were watching families inside their home. This put me off getting a camera back then but I know a lot more about networking now and realise these cameras were probably left very insecure.. Question: If i wanted to record footage to a machine that I use as an every day PC, are there any steps i would have to take to ensure that my PC isnt put at risk? I have an EdgeRouterX and dumb PoE switch. I assume i would need to upgrade to a managed PoE switch and make use of VLANs. I appreciate any responses, Thanks. [link] [comments] |
ISP told me no service is available in new home Posted: 12 Sep 2018 04:51 PM PDT They told me there was too much interference to have any service in my new home which is part of a new local subdivision. My neighbors can get internet but why can't I? I'm not sure what they mean by interference? They said they'd call me next week with details but I just wanna know if there's any hope. There's satélite internet available but I game a lot so that's not an option. Am I really just gonna have to move already? [link] [comments] |
Do I need an ethernet surge protector with powerline? Posted: 12 Sep 2018 04:23 PM PDT I have a TP-Link AV2000. Do I need a surge protector for the ethernet cables at both ends? At just the receiving end? Or should it be fine without a surge protector? [link] [comments] |
Is it safe to use Ethernet if the test said there was a short Posted: 12 Sep 2018 04:23 PM PDT Not sure if this is the right place to post so apologies if it is. I just did my first temination of cat6 cables. The tester I am using is the Klien Jr. The test said that there was a short on 6 and 7. I also reversed the module and retested...same thing. I then terminated both ends again (with new RJ45s) and same thing with the test. However when I plug the cable into the router and laptop...there is data being transmitted. I've done the research and the "short" could be due to a bad termination on the jack or a knick in the cable run. The cable was run by the electrician so I doubt that's the cause. My question is ...is it safe to continue using the cable as if everything is ok? If not...what should I do next? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Need help using Arris-DG2460 Modem/Router as a Router for WiFi only. Posted: 12 Sep 2018 03:48 PM PDT I'm planning on upgrading my internet to 1gps and getting a 3.1 Modem. The modem I'm planning on getting has dual ethernet ports out and one will be my computer, the other I was planning to do wirelessly with my DG2460 until I can afford a better router. However, the Arris DG2460 is a Modem/Router combo and I don't see any ethernet "in" to make use of it as simply a router. Only the 4 normal etherports on the back. Is there a way to connect the new modem and use only the router function on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Router speed drops to 1/100th speed within a few days of factory reset Posted: 12 Sep 2018 03:07 PM PDT Hello, I'm bewildered by my router behavior lately and I'm a loss as to how to fix it or really even troubleshoot it further. I have an internet speed advertised as 300mbps, which is what I get if I plug directly into my modem. However, if I plug into the router (Linksys EA8500), I have anywhere between 3mbps and maybe 30mbps right after a power cycle. I refreshed my network map and now there are only 5 devices on it, all connected via either ethernet or 5ghz. There's no major internet traffic right now like streaming or downloading. Still, my internet speed seems to be in the gutter. I was able to get some relief for awhile, and that was from resetting my router firmware to factory default. Shortly after doing it, I was able to get my 300mpbs speed from the router. A few weeks have passed now though, and I'm back to being slow. Some things that stand out- my network maps tends to get flooded with LAN devices I don't recognize. I haven't tried to test what generates them, but I believe it's the remote connection I use when working from home. It seems to emulate being on a LAN network as my laptops wireless symbol changes to an ethernet symbol, but I'm still not sure why that would make 8ish different LAN connections on my network map. Also, turning off that connection and my laptop doesn't make the speed come back at all, so it might be unrelated. I have a few consoles and laptops that might eventually connect, but none are ancient enough to be before Wireless N and most support AC. I'm either going to factory reset it again tonight, or install DD-WRT. I wanted to make this post before I do any of that because ideally, there's just some silly setting I need to disable or something I haven't configured right. Any help as far as how to troubleshoot this or past experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Best WiFi solution for long large house with lots of walls Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:09 PM PDT Just moved from a small place to a big place with lots of walls and it's kind of far from one end of the house to the other - approximately 3500sf in total. Got Fios but they put the router/WiFi in the basement so I don't get the greatest WiFi from it. I bought the router for $150 from Verizon. It's got Ethernet hardwired from the basement as well where there are 5e jacks throughout the house. What's the best way to get good WiFi coverage? Is it google WiFi? Amplifi? Should I get a long cable and move the router upstairs? Thanks [link] [comments] |
searching for the most stable modem router, with the longest range possible Posted: 12 Sep 2018 03:06 PM PDT I'm living in a 2 floor house with a combo of a modem that the provider gave + netgear d6400 as a router wifi; i'm not happy with the actual situation, since i have to switch wifi between the 2 routers in order to get the best performance; and sometimes, the wifi from the d6400 drops off for no reason, making impossible to view / access to the internet, even tho it was connected with no problem. i'm looking now for a modem router that replaces both of the routers, that has the longest range possible and that is stable too. the internet that i have now is a vdsl with 30 mbps in download and 15 in upload my budget is around 230-250 € [link] [comments] |
Discernible difference in WAN performance between a standard gateway and a Nighthawk router? Posted: 12 Sep 2018 11:15 AM PDT I run a rather hefty Plex server and port forward some other applications. If the only use case I'm concerned about is streaming over WAN, are there any reasons performance may differ between a high end router in passthrough to the gateway or just the gateway itself?
