    Any 4:3 options nowadays? <$600

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 01:42 AM PDT

So I'm looking to get a laptop for the rare occasion when I really have to use one. Since I won't be watching movies or gaming on it (more like coding/working with text), I want a 4:3 screen. I remember there was some random name laptop a while ago, but can't recall the name.

I don't need any tablet-like features, just looking for something with a 4:3 screen in that price range.

Looking for a performance laptop, 15.6" budget up to 1300

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 08:05 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: Can spend up to $1300 technically, but really would prefer to spend less. Country is USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No 2 in 1, would prefer not to have touch screen, battery life is not a main concern, it doesn't need to be amazing but preferably not terrible either.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would prefer laptop is not too heavy. I was looking at some mobile workstations that were over 6lb and that is daunting. Currently have a laptop that is 5.7lb and wish it were lighter. not really willing to sacrifice a lot of performance to get a super light laptop though. Anything under 5lb would be nice.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Plan to put windows 8.1 on it no matter what so I guess it doesn't really matter.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Prefer 1080p, IPS, 15.6" Might consider doing a 14". I have been reading some reviews on different laptops. Ghosting and dim displays sound unappealing.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The most demanding program I use is Dragon Naturally speaking 15. It sucks down a lot of CPU. I would prefer a laptop that has a lot of CPU headroom. I've been avoiding laptops with ultrabook 15w CPUs

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Don't really do any gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? a good Overall build quality would be a good thing to have. I've been avoiding laptops where the reviews say that they overheat.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mainly, I want a laptop that has desktop-like performance. Things like an SSD, RAM, etc are things I can change later. My current laptop is an inspiron 7559 with an i7-6700hq and 16gb of ram. It is fast enough. But it does not support the display I have at its max resolution and refresh rate. It's also a little on the heavy side, so while the weight is acceptable, lower weight is preferable. It has a touch screen which isn't that big of a deal, but I figure it adds weight and cost and there's just no point to it since I won't use the touch screen.

Laptop for university and programming ~550€

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 03:51 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around 550 Euros in Germany
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't care about 2 in 1. Specs is most important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferably, Linux would also work.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15.9"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want it to run Android Studio, Eclipse and some programming apps.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Minimum 8GB of ram, good processor, very good/long battery life (Backlit keyboard would be nice but optional)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a pc which I use for gaming and heavier stuff but I need a small and light laptop which I can carry with me to class and when I travel. It would only be for programming so GPU is secondary. It is also necessary that it has a very good battery so don't have to plug it in every few hours.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: like in the title 300€, Germany

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Dont care, just long battery and good as possibly

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I dont really care, please not a brick to carry around

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows would be fine

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nah dont really care not above 16""

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming and Programming as a student (not really high level)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Maybe Wow or Lol

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No just as cheap as possibly

Laptop only for videos/streams in bed

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 12:27 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500 USD, preferably lower than that though, as low as possible.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer a 2-in-1, but it's not necessary. Battery life doesn't matter as it will hardly ever leave my bedroom and may never leave my house.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important, especially if it's a 2-in-1. I'd like to be able to move it easily with one hand.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I prefer Windows. I tried a Chromebook, I don't like the restriction and it did weird things to the aspect ratio (I don't actually know enough to know if this was the Chromebook's fault, but it was the cherry on top of an already bad experience).

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, it's almost entirely for watching Hulu, Youtube and Twitch.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd prefer if it were touchscreen, but it's not necessary. Nothing else matters to me but connectivity, video and audio quality, and even those don't have to be spectacular of course, just decent.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want it to be a laptop and not just a tablet because it's mostly for watching in bed, and lying down watching a tablet is unpleasant. The screen is usually too small and without the option to use a keyboard, it can sometimes be awkward to type something into a search bar, for example.

Thanks for your input! I appreciate it.

Looking for a laptop for an 11 year old for School.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 02:47 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £100-£400 UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specs for money, although the specs I am looking for will be for using Photoshop and low end games. (i.e) Minecraft

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would be nice if it was light as it is for an 12 year old girl for school work.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Microsoft office, Low End Games

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -fill here, remove dashes-

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Minecraft, possibly Fortnite? Low end at 30fps but not essential.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Again, it's for a 12 year old girl for School work mostly, although she's not much of a gamer, kids these days all tend to game to some extent, so might be worth the laptop being able to run something like Minecraft/Fortnite.

2-in-1 and a high resolution screen are important. I'm looking for something I can use to download movies and watch them on the go. I take long train commutes quite regularly, which is why I'd like something I can switch into tablet mode.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12"-14"

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Fingerprint reader would be neat but it's not required.

Looking for decent 800 and below laptop

Hi all! I am looking for a relatiely thin laptop that can do light gaming. This will be used for school and computer science. I wanna stick under 800 dollars if possible, but willing to go 100 up if it is truly worth it.

Looking for a laptop like this: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-E5-576G-5762/dp/B075FLBJV7/ref=pd_sbs_147_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B075FLBJV7&pd_rd_r=5b809c0e-c1fa-11e8-b774-b318503a9aad&pd_rd_w=q52K2&pd_rd_wg=GGmz8&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=0bb14103-7f67-4c21-9b0b-31f42dc047e7&pf_rd_r=F35M1DC0EGCS3790J0YJ&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&refRID=F35M1DC0EGCS3790J0YJ&th=1

The only thing I don't like about this is weight, so I was hoping there are similar spec'd laptops with a lower weight.

Max Budget: £1500/ 64,000 THB Country: UK/Thailand . Looking for new 4K editing laptop & gaming laptop

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 09:05 PM PDT

First off just want to say what a fantastic reddit group this is, went through a few post and people go above and beyond to help others purchase the most suitable laptop, great community!

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\*

    £1500/ 64,000 THB UK/ Thailand

I'm based in the UK but travel to Thailand once a year. In the UK I could potentially claim laptop as expense against corporation tax saving me 19% but I assume Thailand prices would be better value and won't have extortionate 20% VAT in the first place.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

This is a hard one, ideally all 3!

2 in 1 factor - I've used tablets and laptop separately but never a laptop with touch screen functions. Would it speed up work or improve quality of life, if it makes a significant difference then it would be nice to have.

Good battery life - I understand that gaming laptops aren't known for long battery life, I think 4/5 hours would be nice

Best spec - This is a priority since I want a long lasting laptop that last me many years to come.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** -

Very important, I plan to travel with and use this mostly in coffee shops, It needs to fit in my backpack, ideally a 15" with thin bezels. It doesn't need to be chromebook light but needs to be light to be carried around.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

    Windows 10

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    15"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

4k editing, photoshop, gaming (but very occasionally), adobe premiere pro/ adobe photoshop

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

60fps min, gaming not a priority

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

good keyboard - mid/low priority, doesn't need to be the perfect keyboard, something decent and not too clunky, good functionality for shortcuts, numbers on right side would be nice if they can fit them.

reliable build quality - high priority, I want a long lasting laptop which won't wear our from travel

touch screen - again need opinion on this, if people believe it is super beneficial then great to include, if it is very gimmicky then low/mid priority

finger print reader - low priority, nice to have but not necessary

    optical drive - low priority

good input devices - ideally a good amount of usbs and ports, sd card would be nice. at least 3 usbs ports (mouse, external hardrive, charge phone)

Internal hard drive space - minimum 256, ideally more but depends on how it affects budget. I will be using external harddrive also but you can never have too much space!

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I've been out of the tech circle since 7 years ago when I bought my desktop which has lasted me till now and still going strong, am looking to find a laptop which will give me the same longevity. Looking for a laptop for video editing on the go and photo shopping. Looking forward to all your suggestions.

    Acer Nitro 5 purchase advice

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 12:10 PM PDT

Hi! I'm planning to get Acer Nitro 5 for college works and gaming on the go. I was wondering if I should just get it for $695 or wait for deals in November. Also, how well does this laptop perform on gaming? I mostly play dota2, PUBG, WoW and FFXIV. Thanks!

    Programming laptop(Under 1000)

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Under 1000, ideally in the 600 range

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      Specs matter most to me

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It doesn't matter

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows ideally, mac is fine too

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Since I'll be coding on it, larger is better

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Just some programming applications, some IDE's, a virtual machine

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard is a must, that's about it

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I would love some input on these 3 laptops

    Acer Swift 3, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U - 675.64

    https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8250U-NVIDIA-GeForce-SF314-52G-55WQ/dp/B0746P25QX

ASUS VivoBook S Ultra Thin and Portable Laptop, Intel Core i5-8250U processor - 654.99

    https://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-Portable-i5-8250U-Processor-S510UA-DS51/dp/B078YMY5VZ

    Lenovo Laptop IdeaPad 330 81D2005CUS AMD Ryzen 5 2500U - 500

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834850877

I'm leaning towards the swift 3 for battery-life alone, but the ideapad's price is enticing. Does anyone have experiences with any of these laptops?

    Looking for a 2 in 1 ($500 budget)

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 02:27 PM PDT

As title says, I want a 2 in 1 and was wondering if there are any good deals around for my needs.

I will not be gaming, but an 8th Gen Intel is a must. An i3 or i5 is fine, but I want 8th Gen. Also a good screen is important. I'd like an ssd but I know it will limit my options, so at least something that I can easily change or add an ssd to. Thanks.
