5 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 74)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 05:11 AM PDT

Welcome back fellow AndroidGamers! This week, I've played hardcore oldschool RPGs, strategy card games, and even a gacha game with no iAP - so thank for stopping by, and here are my 5 quick mobile gaming recommendations of the week :)

Disagree about my opinion on these games? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 73 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Here be the games!

Vampire's Fall: Origins [Game Size: 148 MB] (free)

    Genre: RPG / Oldschool / 2D – Offline Playable

    tl;dr review:

Vampire's Fall: Origins is an open-world 2D oldschool RPG with no iAP, no ads, no pay-to-win, no loot-boxes. NOTHING!

The character progression is interesting, the quests and overall gameplay difficult, and the turn-based combat allows for many different strategies depending on the opponent we're facing. Oh, and did I mention the game has PVP too?

The graphics won't impress, but the dark and gritty hand-drawn 2D style has a certain charm to it, and the game is one of the more interesting oldschool RPGs I've played.

Fist of Truth [Total Game Size: 170 MB] (free)

Genre: Card Game / Strategy – Requires Online Access

    tl;dr review:

Fist of Truth is a strategy card game with over 700 cards, 500 campaign levels, online multiplayer, and a unique system that allows us to sacrifice a card to get one extra mana for a single round.

With 4 cards in our hand that each have an attack, defense, and mana cost, and 2 mana at the start of every match, we deploy a card to a 3x3 grid, and the press "PUNCH" to start the round. Cards we deployed and cards the opponent deployed then clash at the same time, attacking anything in the opposing lane.

The cards are interesting and combat fun, but the rewards from quests and campaign levels are so small that getting the best cards will take FOREVER unless you buy iAP to acquire new cards. This means the PVP is rather unfair - sadly.

Maze: Shadow of Light [Game Size: 837 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Action - Requires Online Access

    tl;dr review:

Maze: Shadow of Light is a new action RPG with a great art-style and interesting combat system with multiple skill combos and a system that allows us to seamlessly switch between two characters at any time during combat.

The story campaign missions quickly become very difficult, forcing us to grind older levels for better gear, but there's no lack of variety in the game, with both PVP against bots, real-time PVP, raids, dungeons, mazes, in addition to the campaign missions.

The item unlocking and upgrading system makes the game extremely grindy, and the PVP is sure to turn pay-to-win. But if you enjoy the combat, you might just have a great time playing through some of the campaign missions.

Dawn Break Night Witch [Total Game Size: 630 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Gacha - Offline Playable

    tl;dr review:

Dawn Break Night Witch is something truly unique; it's a gacha RPG with no auto systems and no iAP gacha system (yes, you read that right). Instead, we're bombarded with advertisements, but if playing in offline-mode, none of them appears.

With only three characters, all of which feel nearly the same to play as, and a limited amount of items to unlock, the game can be actually be completed rather quickly - at least in comparison to the typical nearly endless gacha RPGs.

The graphics are fine but nothing our of the ordinary, and combat grows stale after a few hours, but as for gacha RPG monetization, this game is rather innovative - having us watch ads instead of buy in-app purchases.

Is worth playing? Not unless you really hate gacha RPGs because of their monetization but still want a somewhat similar experience.

Mayhem Combat [Total Game Size: 343 MB] (free)

Genre: Fighting / Action - Requires Online Access

    tl;dr review:

Mayhem Combat is an action platform fighting game with both singleplayer, free-for-all multiplayer, and 1 vs 1 PVP matches, made by the Real Boxing and Gravity Rider developers.

A bunch of characters and fun weapons that can be upgraded by collecting enough item and character "cards" keeps the combat interesting, but grinding enough gold to buy the upgrades is tedious, and the very limiting energy system drags out the progression.

Ultimately, despite the interesting platformer-take on the fighting genre, the controls aren't amazing and the monetization is pay-to-win. I had higher expectations for this game and can't wholeheartedly recommend it at its current state!

Has the hyper casual market corrupted the playstore?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 10:13 AM PDT

Looking the top free games on the playstore, you will save a endless stream what is termed Hyper Casual games.

At the time of writing, the top 10 free games in the US playstore are:

    1. Happy Glass
    2. Hell Stars
    3. Big Big Baller
    4. Word Link
    5. Helix Jump
    6. Happy Color
    7. Hole.io
    8. Wordscapes
    9. Hooked inc
    10. Lucky Day

Most if not all of these games could be classified as Hyper Casual. What is Hyper Casual though? Hyper Casual Games are just Casual Games but with the most extreme low barrier of entry possible.

They do this by have a very simple core gameplay loop that is addictive and fun, which is normally instantly playable. You open the app and just play. There's rarely any mechanics and systems to worry about outside the core gameplay, and when they do they are very simple. They also typically have very small install sizes so they do not take up space on your phone and can downloaded and ready to play within a very short amount of time.

Now all this isn't a problem, infact it's great. Small addictively fun games designed for mobile ready to play at your fingertips and at a moments notice you can hop in and out. The problem that these games have created though is their monetization practices they have popularized.

You won't see these hyper casual games top the top grossing charts, but that doesn't mean they aren't making tons of money. The top grossing chart works by calculating how much money the game is making through the store itself. These hyper casual games often have very little meaningful IAP to offer. Some games have none at all.

They are making the majority of their money through ads. This is the root of the problem. These games have extremely aggressive marketing campaigns where they advertise themselves as much as possible in other games. And since these Hyper Casual games have more ads than other games where a majority of the time they are forced upon the users, they are essentially all promoting eachother and themselves. They are slowly monopolizing the store between eachother.

Once the ads have generated enough installs to propel them up to the top ranks in the charts where they get more visibility, thats when they start making their money. Every time someone installs an game through one of these adds it has a cost. And for a game to break even with that cost, a user will need to see roughly 100 ads or 2000 Banners ads, or a combination of something like 75 Ads and 500 Banner ads. Most players do not stick around to see these 100 or so ads, so these games rely on getting as many downloads as possible to spread the ads around, which is why they need to get high up in the ranks to get that visibility.

Looking at one of the big boys in the hyper casual market, Voodoo. They currently have 12 games in the top 100 free games, including games like Hole.io and Helix jump. They and other companies are flooding the market with games in an effort to cannibalize themselves to keep out competition. You will see ads for other games in games by the same publishers, so that people are constantly downloading games from the same companies. It doesn't matter if they stop playing the game they downloaded the new game through since they playing the new game and ad money all goes to the same place.

This trend is making it harder and harder for other developers to create games that don't rely upon an ad monetization model. It's even affecting the midcore market, the previous boogeyman of the appstore.

The most successful midcore titles normally rely on very aggressive loot box and or pay to win models. They are worried less about total downloads and more about the average spend of players and their life time values. Those games try to hook players by getting them invested in the game through a purchase to get them to stick around and hopefully pump more money into the game. The problem this system has is that it heavily relies on whales, people who spend obscenely unreasonable amounts of money on the game. To catch as many whales as possible, the value they need to offer in their in the IAP needs to be high making most games pay to win.

More and more midcore titles have ads in them now. They normally aren't forced like in the casual markets. But many games will give their players small bonus's for watching the ads, creating a feeling that they are missing out if they don't watch them. However these ads are often for the very hyper casual games they are competing against. A lot of popular midcore games are showing a steady decrease in new installs despite often higher revenue amounts that are now propped up by the ads.

So what does all this means and how does it affect you?

In essence, games are becoming less games and more advert apps, that have a game tacked onto it. It makes it harder to find actual real games were their primary focus is to entertain you rather than to get you to watch a bunch ads for other games which also want you watch a bunch of ads.

It's becoming less and less attractive for devs to make games which do not revolve around this model. To make money even your favourite hidden gems need ads which promote these hypercasuals so they can turn a profit. They need to advertise the very things which keep their own games out from the top charts.

If you read all that, then thank you. What are your thoughts about this? Am I wrong? Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

Dragonbound on Android - HTML5 Gunbound

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 10:10 AM PDT

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dragonbound

This is a knock-off private server for gunbound based on HTML5. It runs in the browser and is also playable here: https://dragonbound.net/ But now they have a mobile app.

This is the sorta the same PC gunbound except the animations are a little off and a feels like a knockoff. But it's closest thing with the same angles, wind power, same original mobiles, items etc. No item 2 bs either! Compared to GunboundM, this is much closer to the real GB but unfortunately not the real server

    DIFFERENCES FROM ORIGINAL GUNBOUND

    • Can continue where you left off on mobile in browser

    • can link lobby rooms in the browser as url

    • New custom maps

    • Custom mobiles (you may notice this in the screenshots. Yes, that is a Jolteon. I have no idea what that does. )

    • animations for shots look off

    • some shots don't "bunge" or dig the exact way as PC

    • The new mobile from SA server is available here (chameleon thing)

    Some quick 4v4 gameplay

Marenian Tavern Story - A spiritual successor to Adventure Bar Story from Rideon?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 04:50 AM PDT

Kemco has recently published a new game, Marenian Tavern Story . I finally got around to taking a peek and noticed that it was developed by Rideon, the author of Adventure Bar Story . The basic mechanic seems to be identical but the artwork and story seems to have been replaced.

Does anyone who has played it have any thoughts? I admit I haven't tried it yet.

I've just seen that the game was updated recently and some reviews a have changed to say it's working for them now. Has the game become playable for anyone else now, when it wasn't before? Thanks all.
