    Simple Questions - August 31, 2018

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:15 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Super scared to order! My last post got buried but I'll try again! Ordering this weekend and would like a second opinion!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:20 PM PDT

    Hey guys!

I'm a first time builder, updating from my i2500k gtx 570 build. Finally starting to earn some money so i decided to build maybe a slight overkill of a computer, but i'm fine with that. I'd really love to hear you thoughts on this build. Would you change anything or have anything to add? I'm going to use this computer hopefully to achieve 1440p 144hz gaming (Wow, triple A games, Overwatch etc.) and a bit for my research (which does not require a beast of a computer). I've done plenty of research and read quite many sources so far but if you have any tips for the actual building part i'd be more than happy to receive them as i'm a bit terrified to actually order and build!

My budget is 2500€. Also i'm not going to buy the gpu this weekend as i'm waiting for the benchmarks. If 2080 does not offer bang for the buck i'll go with 1080ti.

I'm buying my items from Finland so the prices on pcpartpicker will not be correct. I'll add the actual prices on the comment section.

    First and Worst RMA

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 11:11 AM PDT

On April 20th 2018 I had a failure with my 120 lite from cooler master and it was a defect. It leaked all over my GPU while I was gone and I had no idea how long it was leaking. I sent them my invoice and everything. I sent my whole computer because I didn't know if anything was wrong. They had no updates for the longest time and i was contently asking for some info. After sometime they just replaced cooler but not my GPU. I got it back about 3 months later and it didn't work you could see residue from the coolant on the PCB. I was really pissed of course and started emailing them about how much they wasted my time and didn't fix anything. They threaten to ban me fro the post and so I told them that their team checked out my card to be fine and why isn't it fine when it got back. Then i was banned. You look at the pictures and tell me if you think I should get my replacement from coolermaster for there damages. https://imgur.com/a/8lKmbGI

25 Mistakes to Avoid (for First Time PC Builders)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 11:35 PM PDT

    1. Trying to build your dream PC when you're broke. You'll end up making a lot of compromised decisions and then end up wanting to upgrade everything later on when you're able to get more money. I think the $500 Ryzen 2200G builds I've seen look really good for the money if you just want to build a decent PC for the money and be done with it, but if you're going mid to mid-high range and are trying to build the machine you want to be proud of, save up more to get the parts you really want.
    2. Watching 5-10 minute PC building videos. These don't go in enough details for beginners to understand. They skip steps or go over them too fast. Skipping over one step of a PC build could result in you spending hours trying to troubleshoot. Watch a 20-30 minute guide before building, even if it demands a lot out of your attention span. Paul's Hardware is a good channel for that. Honestly, even watching a video like that 2 or 3 times will save you more time than rushing and missing a step.
    3. Wiring the power supply cables without preparation. Before you connect any of the wires, know where they all go. Map out a plan in your head on how you want to start connecting them so that it's less stressful when you build. Locate the following ports: SATA (storage), 24-pin (power), 8-pin (power), audio, CPU fans, case fans, PCI (video card). Otherwise, you might get the cables tangled/messy, have to undo and redo them in trial and error. Like I said above, 15 minutes planning can save you at least an hour of frustration.
    4. Not knowing where the front panel connectors go in advance. i.e. The power/reset/LED +/- pins. Of all the people I helped build a computer, this was the most frustrating aspect of it for them. It should say on the motherboard manual or motherboard itself where they go.
    5. Installing the video card early on in the build. That's just going to give you much less hand room. Install it toward the ends.
    6. Buying non-PWN fans. Not everyone will need to buy aftermarket fans, but If you're going to spend money on aftermarket fans, it only costs a little bit more to get the 4-pins instead of 3-pins. Also, don't make the mistake of buying both 3-pin and 4-pin fans and then not being able to have PWM if you plan on putting them in a fan hub.
    7. Installing the fans in the wrong direction. The front case and back fans should both be facing the same direction. Most fans are designed the same way; the "face" side of the fan sucks in the air and the "uglier" side of the fan blows out the air. Don't use your hands to feel which direction theyre blowing because it's deceptive. Instead, use a piece of paper and see what direction it moves.
    8. Cheaping out on a motherboard. I'm not saying you need to spend $150+ or anything like that, but the cheaper motherboards often come with frustrating BIOS experiences and other weird limitations.
    9. Cheaping out on a power supply. You don't think it'll happen to you but it very well may, somewhere down the road. Spending $80 for a power supply. Ideally, you'd like one that lasts longer and can go in your next build, or at least one with a nice warranty.
    10. Buying a 1TB hard drive. For like $10 more, you can get a 2TB hard drive.
    11. Not getting an SSD from the start. Yes, you could add one one later and move your OS to it, but it's a really huge pain in the ass. It's easier to JUST add a hard drive to a PC that already has an SSD if you need more storage.
    12. Going for a highest-speed SSD instead of capacity. Some people will benefit from M.2 NVMe or Optane storage, but 90-95% of people won't notice the difference between a good SSD and an amazing one unless maybe they're transferring massive files on a regular basis. A good 500 GB SSD would offer most people more utility than a great 250 GB SSD.
    13. Screwing around. When doing your PC build, separate the screws. Put the different screws in baggies or little containers so that you don't get them all confused (i.e. the cooler's screws from the case screws, from the motherboard's screws, etc.)
    14. Trying to insert the 24-pin cable pieces one at a time. Conjoin them together and then insert them into the slots together.
    15. Not inserting the 24-pin cable tightly enough. It needs to snap in tight. Pinch it against the end of the motherboard. At one point, during my first build, I thought my video card failed when really it just wasn't being supplied power due to a loose 24-pin cable.
    16. If using AMD Ryzen, consider their pre-overclocked CPU's. Yes, overclocking can be done on normal CPU's, but it's between the stress tests, trial and error, working through the BIOS (or dealing with some software), if you're a total beginner, this might be time consuming or stressful. I were a total beginner and I wanted an overclocked AMD CPU, I would pay the extra $10-20 for the X version because time is worth money too.
    17. Overspending on cooling. A good cooler might boost a CPU performance by 5-10%, but otherwise your CPU performance is 90-95% based on your CPU itself. If you're limited in budget, focus on getting the best CPU you can for your particular needs first before worrying about getting a great cooler. Liquid cooling is good for high-end builds, but it's a terrible bang for buck. The differences between a $50 air cooler and $90 air cooler are very diminished in returns. A $30 cooler like Be Quiet Pure Rock Slim is perfectly fine unless you're doing intense overclocking.
    18. Neglecting the monitor. A lot of gaming builds I see are using a great GPU but have an underwhelming monitor. There's no point in buying a great GPU for graphics if you the panel you're viewing the pixels on doesn't have great colors or resolution. IPS panel monitors are recommended for vibrant colors; VA panels are also good. TN panels have relatively washed out colors and are not recommended unless the maybe your focus is getting high refresh rate monitor for competitive.
    19. Getting "gaming" gear. I see merit in a gaming mouse, but otherwise, these things are overpriced and more about aesthetic marketing than functionality. Instead of a gaming chair, get a chair designed by a company that cares about comfort and posture. With the same money you buy a $150 gaming headset with middling audio quality, you can buy good headphones (AKG K240) and a good USB mic (like the Samson Meteor).
    20. Don't mod your power supply or do any weird electrical work. Unless you really know what you're doing... You risk losing your investment.
    21. Closing up the case before you're truly done. My first time, I had like 3 fake "mission accomplisheds" before I actually got it right. Make sure everything is working, and you're on Windows, and you're opening up a program. Screw all the panels back on once: when you're done.
    22. Buying more RAM than you need right now. Dont panicbuy at alltime high price. Upgrading RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB is worth it at some point, but if you have a mid-range build and you're not doing any serious video editing/daw work, just get 8 GB now, and put that $80 toward more important things in your budget. You can always buy more RAM later and upgrade it with ease, so there's no hurry.
    23. Getting Micro ATX for compactness. Micro ATX motherboards and cases are still massive behemoths, maybe like 15% smaller than regular ATX, but not that much smaller. If you really want a compact build, you need Mini ITX.
    24. Having no warranties/returns. For essential parts like CPU, GPU, Motherboard, Power Supply, buy them from reputable retailers that offer reasonable warranties and return policies. Save your receipts and boxes.
    25. A poor work environment. Do your build in a spacious area. Maybe a dining room table with everything cleared off of it. Don't do your build in a messy cluttered room where you might be scavenging around for boxes, manuals, screws and not know where everything is.
    26. Installing the cooler incorrectly. Instruction manuals for coolers are unforgivably terrible. Firstly, the little metal fan clips attach to the sides - not vertically - (they should look like ears). Secondly, when mounting a cooler, you want to check the back of the motherboard to make sure the screws line up (or to add some kind of bolts in the back to fasten the screws). Third, assuming the heatsink of the cooler is medium to large size and your using a case with a conventional design, you want your fan to face the same direction that your case fans are facing.
    27. Buying a PC case without knowing the details. Read the dimensions; and measure what it would look like on your desk. Watch a Youtube video of it (with good image quality/room lighting). Additionally, try to go for a case that is well ventilated. Some cases have artsy designs to them but neglects airflow. If going for a $60+ case, check if the case you're buying has dust filters.

Saving the planet - AMD wraith coolers

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 10:51 AM PDT

Hi guys! What are you all doing with your unwanted wraith coolers?

I now have one sitting pointlessly taking up the space on the shelf, which made me wonder why AMD hasn't given us a choice to buy a cpu without or with a cooler?

Any risks using Windows key from stranger?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 01:39 PM PDT

I was browsing Kijiji today when I found a post that stated they would give a Windows 10 Pro key to the first person to reply. Of course, I replied as fast as I could; what could I lose after all? He honors his word and messages me the key. I am tempted to use it, but before I do, are there any risks to using a Windows key a stranger gave you? I have yet to see if it is genuine, but would still like some answers nonetheless.

    edit: key is genuine

Why do some people bash the Cooler Master - Hyper 212 EVO, and others say it's good?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 10:50 AM PDT

I thought this would be a good debate topic for all people building a PC on this board. Because I'm pretty sure there's a lot of people building PCs for the first time on here and we all get conflicting information about that cooler. I figured this could be something good for future newcomers to look at. Let's settle this once and for all, let the games begin.

P.S. If you're going to bash it and not defend it. Please link to a cooler that you think is better and why it's better. It's easy to say something is trash, but if you can't back that up why are you talking?

What are some "hidden" websites that have some good deals?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 11:48 AM PDT

These would be websites like DellRefurbished or PCLiquidations which both have amazing deals and coupon codes that sometimes get you more than half the price off

EDIT: Preferably websites that have shipping for EU because PCLiquidations doesnt, sadly

Hi ya'll, I'm a motion graphics artist looking to make a PC that can run/export Adobe programs at quick speeds and also have a sweet gaming set up ($800 dollar budget)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:14 PM PDT

Decided to shell out for a new computer that can get my work done fast, but also something I can run cool high graphic games if possible. My budget would be 800 bucks.

Also a friend sent me a link to a 800 dollar build that is apparently pretty good but I'm not sure(I'm a totally noob at tech stuff) https://www.wepc.com/builds/best-gaming-pc-under-800/ What do you guys think? Thanks for the help!

    RX 580 or Vega 64?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:05 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade my gaming PC, starting with my GPU, and then slowly picking up more parts.

The current plan is to pick up one of the two graphics cards in the title (580 or vega) and then pair it with a ryzen 5 2600 CPU, and some ddr4 2400 mhz RAM. The thing I'm really torn on is which GPU I should get. There's quite a steep price difference at the moment, currently 580s are going anywhere in the $170 - $250 range. I have a 144hz 1440p freesync monitor, and would like to smoothly take advantage of that 144hz and 1440p. I can get a VEGA 64 for about $420 local, which is a pretty good price, but as usually a more budget person, thats kinda a lot when the 580 doesn't seem too much worse.

I've looked up benchmarks on both these cards and compared them, but I want to know what you guys think, and if someone who maybe has a 580 could weigh in on their 1440p performance, that would be great. I'm willing to turn down some settings. Would be nice to have a vega be futureproofed though.

TL;DR: Should I get a VEGA 64 for ~$420, or a RX 580 for ~$200 for 1440p 144hz gaming. Willing to turn down some settings but preferably would want high. Also how future proof would each be?

Still pondering about where to put it. - yes I know I put the AIO upside down. And no I don't care. - still waiting on my cable sleeves (thanks Labor day weekend!) - am still working on cable management

My PC is destroying graphics cards

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:45 PM PDT

Here is my build. I built this PC about two years, nine months ago. Everything worked fine until about a month ago, when it started making a smell and then immediately shut off. It wouldn't turn back on, but when I took the GPU out, it booted up fine with integrated graphics. I was just within my warranty period, and EVGA sent me a replacement.

(Side note: they actually sent me a 1070 to replace my 980ti, which was awesome of them! I will definitely be buying their cards again in the future.)

Anyway, everything was fine and dandy until an hour ago, when the computer shut off abruptly just like before. I couldn't smell anything this time, but the GPU was quite hot. Again, taking out the GPU lets me start up the computer.

Here are my troubleshooting steps so far:
    1. Remove the GPU to confirm the issue is the same as before
    2. Cry like a child
    3. Post here

So, I'm just guessing, but now it seems to me that the issue is likely not caused by the GPU, but rather, something else has an issue that is destroying the GPUs. It's worth saying that I'm not OCing the GPU, though they did both come "superclocked". I have no idea what to do at this point. Any guidance would be really helpful, thanks everyone.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 01:12 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming (enthusiast), streaming, video montages, rendering

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I will adapt with time, but right now I only have 1080p60 monitors, so I expect playing everything maxed out.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Roughly $1,200 CAD (Try not to bust $1,500)

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Here is my build right now, all the parts are already purchased.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm mainly looking for a CPU/Mobo/RAM upgrade. I'm confident the rest of my build is okay right now (you guys can confirm that or not). I was looking at a 2700X or a 8700K, but the recent ThreadRipper price drop got me interested in that too.
I've had bad luck with an MSI GPU in the past (GTX 970 kept flickering like crazy) so I stood away from that brand since then, feel free to change my mind, I just hate having to deal with RMAs.
Currently looking at Gigabyte motherboards, but I know ASUS is still decent (I think) and haven't looked at other brands like EVGA for the moment. I'm open to any suggestion in that sense !

I want 16GB RAM minimum. I don't think I'll need over 3200mhz since I'm not going for world records...

For the record, I've been running the 2600K on a H100 at speeds between 4.4Ghz and 5.08Ghz since I had it. It's been at 4.8Ghz for the last 3 years and I just recently put it back down at 4.4Ghz for more stability (I think it's getting old, even with fresh thermal paste).

Currently playing Fortnite, so nothing intensive, but I've been an avid Crysis 1, 2 & 3 player, Played all of the CoD series for easily over 6,000 hours on PC and quite a bit of Battlefield too. I'm a graphics whore, I love beautiful stuff. Not a fan of RGB things in my case unless it's saving me money (never happened though).

Thanks in advance for all the tips and suggestions !

Need advice on Lian Li pc o1- dynamic build

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:01 PM PDT

I'm building a 8700k , 1080ti/2080ti/2080 (based on benchmarks, I got a new 1080ti auros for 550$) based build in an o11 dynamic and I'm trying to get advice on what fans would be good for the side Intake.

I'm going to mount a kraken x62 on the topside. I currently have three Corsair ll120s I am planning on using. Would higher static pressure fans be better for the side intake?

[Build Complete] Sub $1200 Gaming PC - Thank you!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:30 AM PDT

After a promotion and nice timing, I was able to consult this sub and grab myself a new PC. Lurking and posting helped a lot. This is my second build ever and my first after 6 or so years of not having a dedicated gaming PC. It surprisingly went off without a hitch, besides a brief scare of no video which resolved itself. Needless to say, I'm excited to catch up on some releases from last year and this year, including Wolfenstein II, NieR: Automata, and more.

    Thanks for the help!

Is adaptive sync useless for competitive FPS games?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 10:33 AM PDT

There is so much focus on G-Sync and Freesync on this subreddit, and I've been reading that adaptive sync isn't recommended for competitive FPS games, so I guess majority of the people here don't play those type of games? I mainly play games like Rocket League, R6, Overwatch, PUBG, etc. Would it be pointless for me to get a Freesync or G-Sync monitor if my graphics card can always push more frames than my monitors refresh rate?

    Monitor upgrade help

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 04:16 PM PDT

Looking at this guy which will be $184 after a coupon.

Is this a good enough deal that I should cancel my plan of waiting until cyber Monday to upgrade to an ultrawide?

My budget then will still only be about $300~

    Question about PSU

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 04:11 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm looking to purchase an RTX 2080Ti, but I'm not sure if my PSU is enough to handle it, or even support it. I'm using a Corsair CX600, a non modular 80+ Bronze PSU.

    System:

    i7 8700k @ 4.9GHz RTX 2080Ti (Will be buying) 16GB RAM Few HDD and 1 SSD Z370-E Mobo

Also, not sure if my PSU will support it as the 2080Ti needs a different 8 pin power connector. Could you help me?

    Regards, Jack.

Could someone explain how PCIe Lanes work?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 11:48 AM PDT

So in my build i have:

    Ryzen 5 1600 CPU - 20 available PCIe Lanes

    RX580 - PCIe 3.0 x16

    NVMe Drive - PCIe 3.0 x4 (M.2)

    Wireless Card - PCIe 2.0 x1

This is all on an ASRock AB350M Pro4 Mobo, so does this mean I'm using 21 lanes of my available 20? If so, does this mean theoretically one of my components could not be performing as well? or am i totally wrong about this? FYI everything is working beautifully on my rig, I'm just genuinely curious about this subject and how this all fits together.
