This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Used Graphics Cards worth looking out for !

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 05:57 AM PDT

Hey guys, i know GPUs can be expensive so i thought i'd make a little list with used GPUs that can be had for little money that perform great (usually comes with higher power consumption, though) !

I will use Userbenchmarks scoring as performance comparing tool.

(Obligatory, use Paypal when buying used, or better, test the card beforehand at the sellers place)

All of these can be had for very cheap if you're looking for deals on your local craigslist equivalent. Consider them a good deal if they're a solid 25% below what their new equivalents are going for.

(editied with the help of /u/onliandone)

So let's begin, in the GTX1050ti Tier we have :

    The GTX670, GTX770, GTX780 (1060 3GB Equivalent) , GTX960 (try to get the 4GB variant), R9 285, R9 280 R9 380.

    GTX1060 6GB /RX580 8GB Tier :

The GTX780ti, GTX980, the OG Titan Black, R9 390x (and 290x, which is usually a little slower than a RX580) and R9 Nano. (also used RX480 are cheap too)

Slightly Slower than a GTX1070 but faster than GTX1060 6GB

    the R9 Fury (x), Maxwell Titan X, GTX980ti

    Honourable Mentions

    The GTX980ti !

the beast from 2 Generations ago, some people are selling them off for cheap, because they sold very well the used market is very competetive and a well Overclocked GTX980ti can match a GTX1070.

    The GTX970 !

Faster than the 1050ti but not as fast as the 1060, it's a topseller aswell so the used Market will have quite alot of offers for that Card too !

"i just want a really cheap Card to run DOTA and CSGO etc"

In that case i'd recommend the GTX750ti (or slightly faster GTX660ti, GTX760, GTX950 R9 270, or a Radeon HD 7870), which are almost given away for free nowadays

The "X" Variants on Radeon (or AMD) Cards are usually 5-10% Faster than the non-x Variant, the same applies to the "ti", albeit if i recall correctly the "ti" Variants are siginificantly faster than the non "ti" versions, (Big difference between 980 and 980ti and 1050 and 1050ti)

I’m to scared to order PC parts online.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 08:24 AM PDT

Ok so I'm only 13 and am very anxious about ordering PC parts online off websites. I'd rather just go to bestbuy near my house and pick up a prebuilt PC from there. But I want to build my PC but I am to scared to order parts online. My beautiful mama will be buying me the PC and I'm scared I might order something online and will get scammed or something and it will waste her money. I LIVE IN CANADA AND WILL BE ORDER PARTS FROM AMAZON, newsegg etc. oops caps

    EXAMPLE

Ok so do I just go to the website amazon and let's say I want this (i7-8700k)[https://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-8700K-Desktop-Processor-Unlocked/dp/B07598VZR8] do I just add in my address, phone number & debit card then pay and it will get delivered in a few days to my house door?

What if it doesn't get delivered like I order it and never receive it, never hear about it again?

What if I receive it and the cpu is broken?

What if the delivery guy comes and I'm not home and I miss the delivery?

What if I want to return the CPU and want my money back?

Why is there such a big range in price between the same Z370 motherboards?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 06:17 PM PDT

I'm looking to build a new PC and I'm searching around the Z370 LGA1151 socket motherboards and I noticed there's a big difference in price between some of them. For example, I see that the MSI Z370-A Pro goes for around $110 USD on amazon while the EVGA ASUS ROG Strix Z370 E-Gaming is around $200 USD which is double the price.

edit: Thank you for the replies everyone. I've decided to go with the ASUS ROG Strix Z370E because I want the onboard wifi, better audio, and the dual M.2 slots. Oh, and RGB :)

Does the 1080 ti hold up for 4k AAA titles in the upcoming future? upgrading from a gtx 780 and im wondering if I should buy a cheaper 1080 ti or just go straight for the new 2080's

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:00 PM PDT

Why is it we consider 1080p pixelated at 27", yet it's okay for TVs/consoles to be 55-75" at 4K or even 1080p?

GTX 1050 sporadically working on an AMD FX based system (ANY HELP SUPER APPRECIATED)

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:52 PM PDT

Hi, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I got my sister a GTX 1050 to replace her 660ti as it was on loan form a friend.

It is plugged into a FX6300 and a Gigabyte GA-78lmt-usb3 motherboard. When we first plugged it in, it worked FLAWLESSLY with no issues. Then a couple of hours later the computer would not even POST. The fans would turn on but the USB devices (keyboard for example) Don't initialise/light up.
Then this morning it worked perfectly fine then later today stopped completely again.

I have tried the GPU in another newer Ryzen computer and it works fine also. The old 660ti also still works.

I have no idea what would cause this. A possibility is just how old the motherboard and CPU is that it doesn't support the new GPU but if that was the case it doesn't make sense that it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
There is only one version of the BIOS available, I still tried flashing it and it did nothing, if anything made things worse so I reverted it.

Any help would be very greatly appreciated.

How common/truly problematic is screen tearing with a monitor which does not have variable refresh rate capacity (G-SYNC/FREESYNC)?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 08:08 AM PDT

I have a GTX 1070 on a gaming laptop, and am looking to run games such as The Witcher III on Ultra (which has been smooth.)

I'm looking to buy a monitor, and have done all the reading as to what screen tearing is, and why it occurs.

My question is, in the collective experiences of those who have run high quality games on non-adaptive sync monitors (or NVIDIA cards with freesync,) is tearing actually significant/frequent?

Will it bug me regularly if my monitor has >144 hz refresh rate?

    I appreciate your time!

Gaming / Streaming performance with the AMD Threadripper 1950x (free motherboard to the person who can help me here, shipping in US only).

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 01:14 PM PDT

Fair warning: It's an ASRock X399 Taichi, but the motherboard does have bent pins on the socket. Here is a gallery of the board. It actually worked just fine (booted, etc), but would never recognize 128gb of memory that I had installed. I figured out that with anything in the D slots (D1/D2), the system would not boot. However, with A1, B1, A2, and B2 populated, it did boot. I've since replaced the motherboard and it's been sitting here. I don't care to deal with the hassle of RMA, so I will give it to the person who can advise me on setting up a TR1950x for streaming and gaming at the same time.

At this point I have asked all over the place, so I'm really just hoping I can get some help.

    The Problem

I built my son the above system for streaming. I took the 1080ti out of my system and put the card in his system while I wait for the 1080 to arrive in the mail. My system contains the following:

    • i7-8700k (OCd to 5ghz)
    • 32GB DDR4 3200 RAM (clocked at 3200mhz)
    • eVGA 1080ti FTW
    • a Samsung SSD

All right, so playing on my system at 1440p, 144hz, I get a steady 140FPS in pretty much all the games I play (Witcher 3, PUBG, Paladins, Quake Champions). In my son's system, with the 1950x, the system stutters quite a bit (FPS is all over the place: e.g., 144, 160, 75, 110, 90, etc).

Now, I realize the 1950x is not exactly built for ganubg. However, I had purchased it a while back for my workstation and ended up replacing it with a dual Xeon build. So I've had this 1950x sitting around, and I figured I would put it to good use when my son came along saying he'd like to stream. I've put this system in game mode and that does seem to help slightly with the erratic FPS, but still the performance is nowhere near as good as my i7-8700k system.

I'm trying to figure out with this CPU what a good set up for a single gaming/streaming system. I'd like to keep all the cores enabled, so I was hoping maybe rather than disabling half of them, I can dedicate 1/2 to streaming, 1/2 to gaming. Any experience/tips is greatly appreciated.

AMD FX 6300 with a GTX 1070 Founders

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:27 PM PDT

I have an urgent question concerning a purchase that may happen in the next couple hours. What problems, if any, will I get using an AMD FX 6300 6 core (3.5 ghz) with a GTX 1070 gpu (Founder's Edition)? I heard they can bottleneck when trying to get the most out of your gaming but honestly if I can play ARK on medium settings while keeping above 30fps I'll be satisfied.

I'm slowly upgrading my computer to eventually be able to play Star Citizen and the GTX 1070 is the next step. I know it's not much but currently I'm just using a 760 which can't even boot up half my gaming library anymore (updates are a bitch). I don't overclock my components and the most graphically intense game I play is probably just ARK or Grand Theft Auto 5. Will the bottlenecking of the GPU be more noticeable than the current crap FPS and stuttering I get on low settings in most every game now? I can deal with bottlenecking if it means I get a significan performance boost.

I think I am ready to build with these parts. I will be using my current GeForce GTX 1070. I am a casual PUBG gamer and do a little Adobe Premier Pro editing.

Is there anything that looks mis-matched for the system, better deals or similar quality for better price, or just any input?

I received a ton of help 5 years ago here and it's finally time to upgrade again.

    Thanks in advance.

    PC For recording/streaming?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:23 PM PDT

Hi, I just found this sub and I'm struggling to figure this out.

I just bought an Elgato hd 60 to record and a blue snowball for a mic. When editing I'm noticing that my gameplay cuts out every now and then and it causes everything to be off.

My computer: Intel core i5-7200U @2.50Ghz (2 cores) 8 Gb of RAM Intel HD Graphics 620 1tb disk space

I'm looking into building my own pc anyway, but what cpu should I use? Is it because mine doesn't have enough cores or is it too slow? Thanks

Gifted a Nearly Complete PC, Nobody Knew How to Put Side Panels On

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 10:33 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

N/A. Computer was 99% put together by former coworkers, don't know the parts used.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Friends from work gave me this almost-complete PC. Problem is, I have no idea how to put these side panels on. This is my first time doing anything with a PC of my own btw so I apologize if this turns out to be stupidly easy.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • Asked the guys who gave me the PC in the first place. They didn't know how either, hence their willingness to just give it away.
    • Tried to google the make of the case, but I don't recognize this brand

Replace this text with your answer.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Imgur Link with the pieces and a photo of what I think is the brand logo on the front of the case: https://imgur.com/a/644TSXp

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated :)

Is spending the extra cash worth it? GTX 1050TI or GTX 1060 6gb

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:00 AM PDT

Hi buildapc people, so I'm a newbie when it comes to pc building and I've been saving money for about 4 months now and I plan to build my first pc this mid-October. I have all the other parts sorted out, but what I'm really confused about is whether I should pick the GTX 1050TI or GTX 1060 6GB. I'm from the Philippines, and the cheapest GTX 1050TI can be bought for PHP8100 or $151. While the cheapest Gtx 1060 6gb can be bought for PHP14700 or $275.

I was wondering if the extra price is worth it considering that the 1060 is almost the price of 2 1050TI's. Also, I'm not rich and I don't plan to build another pc in the near future. So the GPU that I need to choose should last me for the next 5 years or so. I'll be using it to play previous and current generation triple A games and e-sports titles such as Fortnite, Lol, AND CS:GO. I've watched a bunch of benchmarks and I still can't come to a conclusion on which one to pick. Can anybody help?

P.s. I know that the Gtx 20** series is coming, but I'm from the Philippines. So by the time that the new GPUs arrive here, initial prices will be jacked up from the msrp and I won't be able to buy. Also, should I wait for the benchmarks of the new GPUs before deciding if I should buy or should I cash in right now and build my pc? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

    EDIT:

I came across a Galax GTX1070 Mini Oc for PHP17770 or $333. Will I gain a significant performance bump if I choose that over the 6gb 1060? Does the 1070 ensure that I won't be upgrading for the next 5 years? P.s. sorry if i ask too many questions, I just want to make sure that I make the right decision.

    After Effects compositing

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

this will not be a gaming PC

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $3k - $3.5k

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    US

    Additional Information

I will be using this PC strictly for 2D/3D production. I do need a motherboard that will allow me to expand to 3 gpu's (keep in mind the configuration as the gpu takes up the PCI slot along with the space underneath it physically). I will start with 1 gpu for now. The motherboard in my parts list got pretty good reviews on NewEgg but wanted to check with the buildapc community to see if I'm missing something. Core count for the CPU is not a huge deal as Octane Render for Cinema4D utilizes GPU rendering rather than number of CPU cores.

Phanteks Halo RGB & Asus Aura sync

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:58 PM PDT

I looked for an answer for too long so I am posting here. Maybe I can help and save a few some time and hassle.

I bought the Cheaper Phanteks Halo units (and the cable they cheap out on) for my current build of my Asus Strix Z370-i. Asus actually has 2 different Aura sync systems so the cheaper Halos won't work on a 3 pin header. To get the Phanteks Halos to work on 3 Pin headers; you need the Halo Digital Lux units.

    Asus 3 Pin header - 5V

    Asus 4 pin header - 12V

I'm so mad at myself for not looking more closely at voltages but, Asus really needs to state 2 different types of system.

    EVGA B stock PSU

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 08:25 AM PDT

I am currently working on getting the parts to build a gaming pc for the first time. I was looking at a Corsair 550 semi modular unit for $45 when I went to the EVGA website today to look at GPU's. I saw an 850 modular PSU 80+ bronze for $39. I know it's only 5 dollars but that PSU looks pretty stout and a better deal. Thoughts? I am building a Ryzen 1600/1700 system and the only piece I have already is an ASUS x370 prime I found for $100. Thanks

AMD equivalent of my planned Intel upgrades?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 11:54 AM PDT

Hey all, I've got a list of parts I was planning to buy to upgrade my gaming PC (used for 1080/60 only, no 144 and no 4K or anything like that) and I've been waiting to see them come on sale (mainly the CPU). But as I've been waiting, and watching prices stay the same/increase, I've seen a lot of great sales on AMD processors. I've heard that they've really upped their quality from when I first built my PC years and years ago.

My list of parts (sorry on mobile, can't format as nicely as I'd like to):

    Intel i5 8600K cpu - $250

    G.Skill TridentZ 16GB ram - $170

    Asus Prime Z370-A motherboard - $160

All these together come out to over $500, which is a bit more than I really wanted to spend, hence waiting for a sale. My question is, what is the AMD equivalent to these parts? And is there a price difference? Also, I assume that AMD would work fine with my existing PSU and GPU, right? I've never used AMD parts before so I'm wholly uneducated on that front.

Thanks all, sorry for lack of pretty formatting.

    Opinions on my first build

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:39 PM PDT

This is my first PC that I'll be building and I'm just looking for some input on this build that I modified just a bit from a comment on another thread. I am trying to stay within $800.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DYDsV6

I am planning on buying a refurbished 1060 from evga, so I didn't include that on this list here.

I'm going to mostly be gaming. I play a lot of RTS and FPS games. I was looking to get into Arma later on down the line.

    Any input is greatly appreciated.

Is the NZXT S340 Elite worth the upgrade?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:25 PM PDT

So I'm currently using a old Corsair 800D I got from my cousin (Power button broke off, that's why he didn't want it anymore.) But after using it for a while, I find that it's very big to the point where if I turn my chair, I will hit my kneecaps on the edges of the case, so I was browsing online and saw a open box S340 Elite that was for sale, but other than the size downgrade, I'm not sure how much of a benefit I'll get from this (Since I know I'll only be able to have 4 fans as opposed to 8 on my 800D, so should I just stick with my big 800D with a missing power button or upgrade? I wanted to see other people's experience with the S340 Elite
