    Simple Questions - August 09, 2018

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Built a computer for my nurse

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 10:57 AM PDT

This is my nurse Tory. She's the best nurse ever and takes really good care of me. I wanted to do something nice for her and her kids so I built her a pc from spare parts I had and a few other parts from redditors.

Gigabyte ITX board, 6600k cpu, 16gb of RAM, 500 gb SSD + 1tb HD, 560ti video card, Corsair itx case, 600watt psu, 22" Samsung monitor, Mouse and keyboard

    https://imgur.com/L6UVmKb

It feels good to do something nice for people who deserve it. Total cost about $200. Shout out to /u/sodabagoda2 for the hookup

I've a confession: I've never used an anti-static wrist band

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 07:30 AM PDT

I have never used one as I've read that they are mostly unnecessary.

Usually when opening my PC or someone else's i touch something metal; my desk leg, or the metal case itself as i am opening the PC.

I was reading some forums (for some reason discussion on the matter stopped after 2014) and got a little bit scared and so bought myself one now.

Who here uses one? Who thinks its just placebo?

Can’t insert the GPU into the slot.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 07:47 AM PDT

Hello everyone! I'm currently building my first PC, and it's gone relatively smooth until now. I'm building with a Gigabyte A350M-DS3H and using a Gigabyte 1060 GTX. I removed the expansion slots and the card fits nicely in there, but I can't seem to slot it in to the actual motherboard. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Edit: turns out I made a rookie mistake, thank you all so much for the wholesome feedback and I look forward to laughing at myself in the future :)

    Upgrade Cycle

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 11:22 PM PDT

For the past 15 or so years that I have been building my gaming PCs, I always follow the same rule when upgrading my hardware, particularly my CPU and GPU. I usually always pick the upper middle class GPU and CPU(think i5, gtx 970 etc.) which is where most bang-for-the-buck models are positioned. For CPU I usually upgrade once very 5 years since the gain is very little per succeeding generation(obviously there are exceptions). For the GPU I upgrade once every 3 years since there are more significant gains per generation. Does anyone follow the same? I am just curious since I have so many friends who would update every new generation only to get buyers remorse afterwards.

EDIT: For those who are wondering, here is my upgrade history:

    CPU

    Pentium 4 Prescott (2003) - Core 2 Duo E7400 (2008) - Core i5 3470 (2012) - Ryzen 5 1600 (2017)

    GPU

    FX 5500 (2003) - 7600 GT (2006) - 8800 GT (2008) - HD7870 Ghz Ed. (2012) - GTX 970 (2016)

Is a i3 8100 any good for gaming?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 04:34 AM PDT

    Looking to upgrade soon

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:49 PM PDT

    Currently running

    i5-4430@3.0ghz

    8gb ddr3 RAM

    RX 480 8GB

I imagine getting a new Mobo + CPU would be a good place to start, but i'm unsure of what the choices are, haven't really been in the market for a while.

    Any suggestions or advice?

Can't boot from an external SSD on an HP Pavilion DV6 1320

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 02:52 PM PDT

I don't seem to be able to boot from an SSD (MX 300 with W10) connected to an eSATA port despite the fact that I can access the files in it when I boot from the internal HDD of the laptop (W10) and I can boot from the SSD in other computers I tested. When I go to the bios setup, there's an exclamation mark in front of the USB Hard Drive option, which probably means something but I have no idea how to fix this issue (I also tried pressing shift+1 as suggested by a page I googled and it didn't do anything at all).

    Any ideas?

    My first build is complete!

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 12:57 PM PDT

I just finished my first ever build, and I couldn't be happier! I spent a lot of time choosing what parts would fit my needs and wants. I had my mind SET on that cooler so I had to use a parcel forwarding company to ship it to me in the US because they aren't going to sell that product here. I contacted their support team and they verified it will not be coming here.

I tried my best with the cable management, but it still needs some work. Any suggestions for where to buy custom cables? Is Cable Mod the best option?

As happy as I am with the build, I can't deny that now all I want to do is build another. I caught the bug!

My New Build! (The pics really don't do it justice)

    GPU Upgrade

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 02:27 PM PDT

    I have a RX 580 8GB with a 1440P 144Hz monitor. It's great for videos/movies but lacks too much (my opinion) in gaming. Should I get a Vega 56 or a 64?

2nd question(s) I have is should I consider a GTX 1080? Or even a 1080 ti? (Since prices have been dropping like flies) Or is having a freesync monitor shoot that down?

Noob here, so sorry if it's dumb and wrong to ask/want.

PC Bricked After SSD Install Attempt

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 04:15 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I recently purchased a Samsung 500GB SSD to put into my computer (Dell XP5 8500).

Basically I loaded Windows 10 onto a USB, unplugged my hard drive, plugged in my SSD and when I powered on my computer was stuck on a black screen (never got a prompt to open BIOS).

After a few tries I unplugged my SSD and plugged my harddrive back in and suddenly I have the same black screen issue. I'm not sure what I did during this process but the hard drive (which has always worked) is now having the same problems as my new SSD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Rx 560 or GTX 1050

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:16 PM PDT

I've currently got a Ryzen 3 2200g. Planning on adding a discreet gpu. Which would be better to go with, the 560 or the 1050. I know there's only a small price difference but didn't know if the 560 would work better with the Ryzen or not.

    RX 560 (2GB) or GTX 1050?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 02:34 AM PDT

Also it's not a RX 560D so I guess it is better? These parts are on sale here and it's a similar price. Which do you think is better to get?

With the new GTX 1180 coming out soon: Which processor to buy for my new PC?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:37 AM PDT

I'm planning to build a new PC soon and am currently waiting for the GTX 1180 (or 2080, whatever it will be called) to come out. I wanted to combine it with a i7-8700k, however I am unsure if I should wait for the 9th generation of the Intel Core-CPUs to come out. How much of an perfomance boost does a new generation approximately bring? Will it be worth the wait? I mostly use my PC for gaming (and browsing etc.) but not for video editing.

    Thanks!

Should I buy this laptop for gaming?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 02:46 PM PDT

A friend of mine wants to sell me his about 2 year old laptop for 450 to 500 euros. It's a Medion Erazer P7647

    Specs : Intel Core i5 7200U GTX 950M 256 GB SSD 1TB HDD 8GB RAM 43,9 cm (17,3") FHD Display

Is it worth it? Thanks in advance :)

Edit: i know i wrote "gaming" in the title but i obviously dont expect to play Far Cry 5 at max settings. I just want to play some Fortnite, Paladins or Overwatch. And if anybody could tell me if Dark Souls 3 could run on this system by any chance, please let me know

    GPU or CPU

So I've been looking at upgrading my computer recently, which hasn't had an real upgrades other than adding an SSD and more ram, since I built it in 2013. I'm currently running a Xeon E3-1230 V2 and two AMD 7970 GHz editions in crossfire. If I could only upgrade one, which one will give me the biggest boost in gaming performance?
