Looking for a 144Hz Laptop up to 3000€ in Germany Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:50 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 3000€, Germany Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications How important is weight and thinness to you? I'll travel a lot with it, so lower weight and thinness are much wanted, but not an absolute must if there is a specific model out there which justifies it's dimensions by its power. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. None. (I have a Windows license) Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17,3" or bigger as I am having issues playing on a small screen. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Games I currently play / plan to play: Overwatch World of Warcraft No Man's Sky Monster Hunter World I am also using the laptop for game developing / programming. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Overwatch & WoW @ 1920x1080 (playing on laptop screen) / 2540x1440 (playing on external 144 Hz monitor) on Ultra settings with 110+ FPS NMS & MHW @ 1920x1080 (playing on laptop screen) / 2540x1440 (playing on external 144 Hz monitor) on High / Ultra settings with 110+ FPS - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Laptop keyboard shouldn't get very hot. Reliable build quality is a must since it gets transported much in a backpack. USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports would be great, Thunderbolt optional. Hope someone can help. :) Sincerely, Xi4. submitted by /u/Xi4 [link] [comments] |
Enquire on which laptop I should get for University and light video editing for hobby Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:44 PM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase: From S$1000-S$1600. Singapore.
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and best specs for money. 2 in 1 not needed.
- How important is weight and thinness to you? Will be using it through university so it is preferred to be light and thin.
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Very minimal video editing. Maybe once a week - or less even. Adobe Premiere or any free online video editing software
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd prefer an SSD as opposed to a hard drive but open to hybrid as well. Comfortable keyboard and a good configuration of ports will be great.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mainly using it for studies in university with abit of video editing as hobbies maybe once a week. Was looking into Vivobook S15 S510UN-BQ215TS and HP ENVY 13 notebook. But very open to any other suggestions.

- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD work in Solidworks, and games like Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, and Warframe

- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I doubt I will be using this laptop for gaming on battery so that is no concern for me, but when on battery the laptop shouldn't thermal throttle nearly ever. As well if I can get a Thunderbolt 3 port for a eGPU in the future that would be great. Also can I hear your opinions on the lifespan of the laptops that you recommend.
- Some Laptops I've been looking at are: The Dell G7 15, Acer Predator Helios 300, HP Omen 15, and the MSI GP63 Leopard-013

Friend looking for a laptop (ultra book) for college - $1.5k budget Posted: 31 Jul 2018 10:36 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 2000 AUD or about 1500 USD, although budget is flexible if there is a good reason. Purchasing in Australia where prices are a bit inflated compared to the US. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life necessary, 2 in 1 would be good (she was looking at Surface Book 2 as a potential option) How important is weight and thinness to you? Important - shouldn't be too heavy Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Doesn't matter Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A Not too big of a deal, but preferable smaller over form factor - so maybe 13-14 inch Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Probably not - maybe lit video editing (subtitling videos?) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Won't really be gaming Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality, good keyboard Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. They are considering the Surface Book 2, although they don't really need the GPU and I thought it'd be a waste of money for them to get the Surface Book 2 13.5 inch base model with only 2 CPU cores and no dedicated GPU. I recommended the XPS 13, but she isn't a fan of the design. Any other good suggestions? Was also considering the Matebook X Pro, but bit worried about warranty as we'd have to import. submitted by /u/whalematrontron [link] [comments] |
Suggest a carry method? Just bought a MSI GX63VR and wondered how you guys carry your laptops safe and secure Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:37 PM PDT As I said I just bought a laptop from Newegg and am waiting for it to be delivered. As an aside if anyone can suggest a better laptop I'm all ears. I chose the MSI GX63VR for the 1070 and price point of ~1500. The RGB keyboard is a selling point but something I can let go of. I understand the display may not be the best. If someone can lead me in a better direction I'll certainly listen. I'm going to reserve final judgement until I have it in my hands. All that said, how do you guys carry your machine. Right now I'm looking at a dry bag option and putting the laptop in it's own shockproof sleeve. I'd personally want to avoid any single purpose items like a briefcase that can only carry the laptop and maybe the charger. I'm not exactly the most outdoorsey person so I know the dry bag might seem a little extreme but I'm also extremely careful with my electronics and if I'm spending that much I want to be very sure I'm as protective as I can be. I'm even open to the idea of a waterproof case that holds the laptop by itself that I can put inside a larger non waterproof or at least water resistant bag Thanks for any and all suggestions and replies. submitted by /u/Capt_BrickBeard [link] [comments] |
Hp spectre 360 i5 vs i7. Any difference in heat output? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:51 AM PDT I would like to buy the newest Hp Spectre ultrabook. Exert Assistance Required | Laptop 14" 1920x1080 Intel Pentium SSD Windows 7 BIOS Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:34 AM PDT Hello, I have been searching for a very specific laptop for a long time and have been close in the past to acquire one. The laptop I am looking for contains these features, and I normally use the following search terms. - Laptop - 1920 x 1080 - 14" - Intel Pentium - SSD - Windows 7 - Normal BIOS Compatible (different to UEFI) I am open to a different processor, Intel Pentium appears to be a good search result as it has suitable performance and low energy consumption. To open up the search for Win 7 compatible systems I am open to Intel 6th Generation and lower processors, i3, i5 and i7 will be suitable. Here's the thread template. Acceptable Budget: £500, although if one exists at £20,000 I'm interested to know. Country of Purchase: Preferably in the United Kingdom, although can be shipped from any country. 2 in 1: Preferably not, but doesn't bother me if all specs are present. Battery Life or Best Specs: Both, don't mind low spec for battery saving or higher spec for performance. Weight and Thinness: Preferably light and thin. Operating System: Must be compatible with Windows 7 and older BIOS as well as UEFI. Screen Size: 14" Video Editing or Gaming: Probably, useful if laptop can run all applications smoothly. Program List and FPS: N/A Keyboard: Preferably UK, no LED and full size keys (usually enter or arrow keys are cut in half, i dislike this). Touch Screen, Finger Reader, Optical Drive: Not required. The laptop which has came closest to my requirements has been the Linx 14 UltraSlim, although upon testing the laptop in person I discovered it was not compatible with older BIOS - which is essential for my case. Furthermore there wasn't a manufacturer website to download or update drivers. Great device, but didn't run Win 7, not BIOS compatible and no driver downloads. Here's the spec sheet. Link: https://preview.ibb.co/jodfQe/Linx_14_US_Gold_Data_Sheet_1.jpg There's also been another release with similar design from TrekStor, Germany. Although it has a German keybaord and I expect doesn't support Win 7. Link: http://www.trekstor.de/products/notebook.html TLDR: Still searching. All help is appreciated, thanks. Rewards available for the user who solves my problem. submitted by /u/Fibresite [link] [comments] |
[Advice] Considering buying a used laptop and having very serious doubts regarding the 2017 Aero 15 X Posted: 31 Jul 2018 10:31 PM PDT So I recently saw what I believe to be a really good deal on a used laptop, the i7-7700HQ Aero 15 X. Here are its specs as declared by the announcer: Display: 15.6" Thin Bezel Full HD (1920 x 1080) Wide Viewing Angle Anti-Glare Display (X-Rite Pantone Certified) | Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB (Max-Q) GDDR5 - Processor: 7th Generation Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ Quad Core (2.8GHz-3.8GHz, 6MB Intel Smart Cache, 45W)
RAM: Upgraded to 32GB DDR4 2400MHz | Hard Drive: 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64 Bit) | Warranty: 2-Year Gigabyte USA + Global Warranty Parts & Labor So the guy says he's only selling it because he upgraded to the newer model and he's asking for 1600 bucks for it. Everything seems ok in the photos (he has the box for it, the manual, charger,'and etc in it too. I also checked out his social media profiles and he does work for a local computer security company in town, so it doesn't seem all that unlikely. I'm extremely tempted because of the specs and form factor but it seems too good to be true, honestly. So what I'm really asking for is advice on the general situation or what to look for in the laptop to see if it's worth it over a newer one. submitted by /u/matthewfrota [link] [comments] |

Looking for a Gaming Laptop Posted: 31 Jul 2018 10:07 PM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase: $1,000 (USA)
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: Best specs for the money
- How important is weight and thinness to you?: <10 lbs
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux: Windows
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A: 15.6"
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: Adobe Premiere Pro / After Effects and League of Legends
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?: League of Legends on Ultra at <60 fps
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touch pad)?: Reliable build quality
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion: Since I will be going into college next year, I am looking to carry my laptop to classes and well as use it in my dorm for frequent use. I've been looking at the Dell G7 15 with the i7-8750H option but I really don't want to go for that laptop because of it's poor build quality according to many reviewers. I don't care about the battery either. As for the design of the laptop, I don't want something that screams the typical "I'm a gamer" look (crazy designs on the cover with the typical black and red combination). The most important thing for me is the overall quality of the screen. I'm fine with a 1080p display as long as it has good color production.
- Some Laptops I've been looking at are: Dell G5 15" (with Intel Core i7-8750H option), Legion Y530 15" (with Intel Core i7-8750H option), Acer 15.6" Aspire 7, Ideapad 330 15" with Intel Core i7-8750H + 16GB DDR4-2400 option)

For University AU Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:43 AM PDT Hi, Unfortunately I have to get a laptop for uni work even though I much prefer my desktop. This laptop would be solely for taking notes and other related uni stuff e.g we need a device that can connect to wifi during labs. I'm doing biochemistry if that matters. I have been trying to think what do I truly need as I am not too keen of dropping hundreds of dollars for this one. I was even considering a tablet but I would probably get insane because of no physical keyboard and I'd imagine that touch screen gets old fast. So I think I want it to be reliable and relatively easy to carry in your bag. I also hate it when the keyboard or the mouse is inaccurate/slow/annoying. Also appreciate any suggestions for useful software. submitted by /u/totesnorobotti [link] [comments] |

A laptop for college and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for around or below $1000 US Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:42 PM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 US
Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is most important since I'll have long school days. The ability to go into tablet form for drawing with a stylus is a high priority as well. How important is weight and thinness to you? A thin and light laptop would be ideal, but not the most important thing Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. A screen 12 inches or above would be ideal. a decent size for some movie and TV watching, but small enough to use comfortably to draw in a tablet mode. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Papers for school and Adobe Creative Suite for a graphic design course,no gaming will happen on this laptop Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd prefer an SSD as opposed to a hard drive for faster speeds. A touch screen where I can use a stylus would be a great addition, as well as a possible tablet mode to make for easier drawing. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This laptop would be used almost entirely for school work on long school days. I'd like a laptop where I won't feel afraid if I forget my charger or feel too bothered by it's weight while I take it from class to class. A reliable computer for our average college student. submitted by /u/ACBrox39 [link] [comments] |

Asus TUF FX504GM-ES74 vs. (New) Alienware 15 Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:00 PM PDT Hi everyone! My budget is up to $1500 and I'll be buying it in the US. Durability is the number one priority for me and the computational power is the second one whereas graphics is not that important. I will use it for computational research so i7-8750H or similar is a must. I'm considering buying one of these two laptops. Specifically, this Alienware or this Asus, both with i7-8750H and 16gb RAM. (Graphics is not that important for my use so I don't even check it.) Asus with 256gb SSD+1tb HDD costs $1300 while Alienware with same specification would cost $1500. So, I am inclined towards Asus but my brother is using an Alienware laptop and it looks very solid. Which one would you recommend, given that the priority is durability? Is there anyone using this Asus with similar specs? Also, any other suggestions with similar specifications and price are welcome. submitted by /u/amhotw [link] [comments] |

Help Me Decide Between Two Potential Laptops (4 AutoCad/Architecture) Posted: 31 Jul 2018 07:56 PM PDT Hello. I'm a student going into Architecture studies next year and I'm going to be collectively using AutoCAD for a majority of my studies. I've got my eyes on two laptops, the Microsoft Surface Laptop and the Dell XPS 13" (2018). I need help deciding between the two (for context, the Surface Laptop is on sale rn, base model $1600 down to $1399). I'm currently living in Canada, so laptop choice is restricted here, but if anyone can recommend another great laptop I'm completely open to suggestions. Thank you! :D - Total budget and country of purchase: $1,000-1,700 (Canada)
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: The best specifications for my money (bang for the buck), and good battery life if possible. I am personally not a fan of 2 in 1 form factor.
- How important is weight and thinness to you? It's a noteworthy factor, because I'll be carrying this around for a majority of my day.
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" (15" is simply too expensive.)
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. AutoCAD work for Architecture, and potentially some photo editing such as Photoshop. No games whatsoever.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As much as this is a laptop for school, I'm looking for this to be a generally reliable laptop that I can use for a long time. I'm looking for reliable build quality that will see me through for a while and not just my studies.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm seriously torn between these two laptops. I know the Microsoft Surface Laptop is a little on the premium side, but its sale is making it so tempting to buy, mainly because of its (subjectively) superior build quality to that of the Dell XPS 13". Specifications are also very similar so my main reason for being so indecisive is the reliability of the machine.
- Some Laptops I've been looking at are: Microsoft Surface Laptop and Dell XPS 13".
Please help me make a decision! Thank you! submitted by /u/ciliann [link] [comments] |
[USA, $400-600] Looking for a work laptop, screen size not important Posted: 31 Jul 2018 07:39 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Budget: $400-600 (USA) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. My top priority is performance and durability/longevity of the laptop. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important, but it needs to fit in a medium sized backpack. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A, but I would prefer a larger screen over a smaller screen, all other factors being equal. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, but GIS and statistical softwares, primarily R, ArcGIS, QGIS. Arc in particular is very memory intensive so I need a minimum of 8 gb of RAM out of the box. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a good touchpad and a keyboard with a number pad, but I am okay with sacrificing these features for increased performance. As mentioned, a durable machine would be strongly prefered. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would like for this laptop to have the option to upgrade memory and install/upgrade an SSD, even if it doesn't necessarily come from one. I'm looking for a computer that is solid out of the box (minimum 8 gb ram) but can be upgraded as funds allow. I was eyeing the ASUS VivoBook F510UA in the quick picks menu but I don't know if that's the best I can do for my needs and figured I would get some additional input. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/memphistothesinner [link] [comments] |
