Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:38 PM PDT My Dad has a 2 hour commute by train every day, and he has for years. It kills him - he really hates it and wishes he had a 10.1 inch (tops) laptop that he could use for basic stuff that doesn't totally suck. I'm a writer myself and have an Asus x205ta that does me just fine - something similar to that with a good battery life and 64 gb storage would be super. He doesn't really want a 2 in 1 either, just a laptop that he might put Linux on. He's been talking about this for about 3 years now, I'd really like to get him something and I know it would make him happier when he's stuck on the train. Any suggestions for something of that size that would be really good for using on a crowded train? A physical keyboard is essential. [link] [comments]
Laptop for University & low settings gaming Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:30 PM PDT Going to be using it primarily for studying bring it with me back and forth from university, take notes, write essays, but If I ever need it for gaming I'd be happy with low settings with decent fps and slim & lightweight. I've been looking at some different laptops light & slim, FHD display with anti-glare with a good variety of different ports and gpus like mx150 or 1050 gtx, decent ram & storage around, I would not be willing to pay more than 1200 euro, I was thinking closer to 1000 or less, I compared a lot of 13 vs 14 vs 15 inch laptops and found: (leaning towards atm) -HP Pavilion 14-ce0001no €1000 :
1,59kg & 32,68 x 22,55 x 1,79 cm -HP envy & spectre 13 series (slim, doesn't seem to have anti-glare) -ASUS VivoBook Pro 15 N580VD (decent but 15 inches) -ASUS Zenbook UX430UN-PURE5x14 (seems overpriced) any other recommendations? -Dell XPS 13 seems expensive and its integrated gpu seems worse than a mx150 [link] [comments]

Laptops with traditional mechanical docking stations? Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:47 PM PDT Thinkpads now have flimsy slide-in USB-C based docks, Dell 7 series and HP EliteBooks dropped support for docks a while ago. Is there any other option left? [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:31 PM PDT I'm planning to buy a new laptop. I found two on the hp website that I liked: [HP Spectre x360 - 15t Touch] (https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-spectre-x360-15t-touch-laptop-2kd76av-1?jumpid=ma_labor-day-sale-2018_product-tile_laptops_9_2kd76av-1_hp-spectre-x360---15) [HP ENVY Laptop - 17t] (https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-envy-laptop-17t-3en04av-1?jumpid=ma_labor-day-sale-2018_product-tile_laptops_5_3en04av-1_hp-envy-laptop---17t) My question is, why is the Envy so much cheaper when it has pretty much the same specs, except for having more base storage and a worse screen? I don't want to buy the envy and realize there was something I missed that justifies its lower price tag. [link] [comments]

Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:18 PM PDT I'm looking to buy a gaming laptop for about €1400 and the two laptops I came across are the HP Omen 15CE005NV and the Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBN, but I can't seem to choose between them. HP Omen specs: i7 7700HQ 2.8GHz Processor 12GB Ram Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Graphics Card 1TB HDD + 128GB SSD Lenovo specs: i7 7700HQ 2.8GHz Processor 16GB Ram Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Graphics Card 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD The rest of the specs are basically the same. My only problem is that the Lenovo is about €50 cheaper but I've seen websites say it's not as good of a gaming laptop brand as HP. [link] [comments]
[Toshiba L870 Satellite] can’t connect to the internet Posted: 31 Aug 2018 01:05 PM PDT I've had this laptop going on 5 years now- the WiFi card gave out about 2 years ago and I had to buy a dongle (I got one from Netgear) that allows me to connect it to WiFi, and I haven't had any problems with it up to this point, but I had to move apartments, and now even though the computer says it's connected to the network, it won't display any web pages on Firefox or Chrome. I'm not sure what to do, other than back up my stuff and get a new laptop. Honestly I'm surprised it has lasted this long. [link] [comments]

Worth switching Killer 1535 for Intel 9260 Posted: 31 Aug 2018 11:40 AM PDT I just got my Dell XPS 15 yesterday and am wondering if I should wait and see, or just buy the 9260. I haven't had any issues per se (my download speed is slower than my old Acer Swift 3 but upload is much faster on avg) but I haven't noticed any dropping so far. Even if I don't experience wifi dropping is it worth getting the 9260 for faster speeds alone/would I even get faster download speeds? I don't mind the price point/installation, I just want to know if it will actually help. [link] [comments]

Wondering about Hp Omen 15 2018 durabilty Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:43 AM PDT After looking at many laptops, the Hp Omen 15 with an i5 and 1050ti seems really good for the price on amazon, but I was wondering about it's long term durability, especially because it's HP and considering their reputation for not-so-good quality materials. So I guess this question amount to Is it worth it buying an HP laptop this days and expect it to last? [link] [comments]
Trying to finalise the build for my high-powered ThinkPad T480. Would appreciate feedback! Posted: 31 Aug 2018 08:51 AM PDT I posted the umpteenth build I'm going through for my T480. For background I want a pc with a good battery for work and writing, that I can plug into an external GPU at home and get something like a decent rigs gaming power. I bought a T580 but the heat from the discrete internal GPU and the coil whine made it annoying to use. I've heard the T480 has much fewer problems, especially is it uses intel graphics and uses an external GPU instead. Thoughts? [link] [comments]

Needs to be able to last me 4 years so reasonable build quality.
The laptop will be for student life, so will be moved around a lot, and should be suitable for writing essays etc. [link] [comments]
Refurbished Alienware 17 R5 with 1060 vs Barebones mech-15 with 1070 Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:48 AM PDT I was able to find a refurbished alienware 17 R5 w i7-8750h 1060 processer for $1260. I also found this deal http://www.eluktronics.com/MECH-15-BYO which is attractive because of the free upgrade to the 1070. All in all (laptop size, CPU, gpu, quality) which is more worth it for the price? They would most likely end up costing around the same or the mech slightly cheaper. Alternatively, I have this option as well http://www.eluktronics.com/N870HP6-BYO with 500 gb SSD and 16 GB ram it comes out to $1161. What do you guys recommend? Any past experiences with any of these or similar laptops? All input is appreciated, thanks guys [link] [comments]
