Laptop Corei7/9, 32GB, 512 SSD Posted: 10 Aug 2018 12:12 AM PDT I am looking for a good laptop. This one sounds like a good reference. Dell G Series 15.6" IPS Full HD Laptop, Intel 6-Core i7-8750H Upto 4.10GHz, 32GB DDR4, 1TB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Max Q 6GB, Thunderbolt 3, HDMI, Card Reader (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAA0S7YU2289&ignorebbr=1) Any suggestions? Laptop for Engineering Student Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:41 PM PDT hey guys I'm looking to buy a laptop for my freshman year of college. I'm mainly looking for all the best things I can get for about $1500 maximum. I dont care about weight or thinness or even the screen size, but I dont really like really small screens. I'm gonna be running windows on it and most likely CAD programs like solidworks. I dont really care that much about gaming on it but that would be a plus. my school gave me some requirements/suggestions: 3+ GHZ processor, minimum 8 GB ram, 2 TB hard drive and ssd's if possible, 1 GB graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce MX is what they suggest), at least 512mb set aside for video I appreciate any and all help at this point because I have no idea where to even start looking. Edit: removed part about desk top monitor suggestion [link] [comments]
Laptop for College (Mechanical Engineer) Posted: 09 Aug 2018 08:05 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Around $2,000, but higher if necessary. I live in the U.S. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? No preference on form, but regular laptop is probably more conventional. It should have some battery life, although I understand it is hard to find with powerful thinner models. I would rather have better quality and have it cost a little bit more. It doesn't need to be best money for specs (but it can be) How important is weight and thinness to you? It should be thin and portable, under 5 pounds would be nice. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? I will be using some solidworks, but I will not be making very complicated things. I will also do some light video editing and gaming for fun. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not a huge concern, but light games at 1080 at 60 fps would be a nice perk. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Needs a good build quality that can last. I will be a Mechanical Engineering student. I want this to be able to last a bit. A TB3 would be nice, along with a SD card reader. I also am undecided on 4K vs FHD. 4K looks great, but price and battery life are cons. This will be my first laptop, so I am not great at choosing a perfect choice. Some models that I am looking at are: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-p/ThinkPad-P52s/p/22TP2WPP52S?menu-id=P52s Not a huge fan of MSI, Gigabyte, or Razer at the moment, but If they have a great laptop that fits my needs, I would definitely look at it. Thanks in advance for the help!!! [link] [comments]
Is there something with i7 8750h + 16GB + 1050 for <=1500€ (Europe) Posted: 10 Aug 2018 04:30 AM PDT Hey there, I've been looking for quite some time to get a new laptop for Uni since I'm moving out and it'll be my main rig while I'm out. I need high CPU and RAM specs because I run some intensive software for audio production, also decent GPU cause I'll probably be doing some graphics work, and I also like to game from time to time. I also highly value mobility cause I'll be carrying it to uni back and forth. I'm living in Spain but will be studying in Germany so I can order in either. I've narrowed the search to three potential candidates plus a question mark:
So after a lot of research, I only found one that has i7 8750h and a 1050 for the desired price, and the seller is a bit shady, so I don't really trust the price. I could even sacrifice the 1050 for a MX150 if I were to have an i7 8750h, but 4 additional threads over the U series is just too juicy to miss. And I know there are some MSI that meet my criteria but are usually too heavy or too large and I really like the GS65 design since it's a 15'' inch screen in a usually 14'' inch chassis. I guess unless you guys know some other laptop that meets my criteria, I'll just have to wait and get the first one to drop out of the first two of my list. [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Aug 2018 04:07 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Budget of 1000 euros aka 1200$. It can go a bit higher. I'm buying from France. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for the money, eventually good battery life * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** If possible <2.5 kg, but it's okay if it weights more. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows and Linux. This is quite important, I need the computer to have no issue with the dual-boot. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15.6" * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Mainly gaming and programming softwares like Visual Studio, PyCharm. Eventually some video editing, but it is not a criterion. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** The Witcher 3, Diablo 3, Overwatch, Skyrim and other RPG * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** AZERTY keyboard, if possible a numeric keypad and good build quality in the sense that it's solid. An HDMI port is obvious, I think. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I selected these laptops, but I prefer to have your reviews on them. https://www.darty.com/nav/achat/informatique/ordinateur_portable-portable/portable/acer_predator_g9-593-77vq.html, but it's a bit expensive https://fr.msi.com/Laptop/GL62M-7RDX/Overview Thank you in advance ! [1400€, Germany] Laptop for studying and light gaming. Posted: 10 Aug 2018 04:06 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** About 1400 €, Germany * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** The laptop will be used mainly for studying. It would be nice if I could play WoW on it. A 2 in 1 form is nice too but not all that important. Good battery life is appreciated. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** As I want to take it to university almost every day, weight and thinness are pretty important. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Gaming isn't top priority but something like WoW, Civ and Diablo 3 would be nice. Other than that I don't really do video editing or anything like that. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** At least 60 fps at high preset would be nice (WoW and Civ 6, maybe something like Sc2 or Diablo 3) * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Nothing in particular * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** As is stated above, I want to use my Laptop for studying so good handling, reasonable weight and thinness, fast website load speed and a good battery life etc. is key. Everything else is a nice bonus but isn't top priority. [link] [comments]
Should i buy a T470s for ~$600? Posted: 10 Aug 2018 03:39 AM PDT Hey, starting college soon and I think I need a laptop. Looking at ThinkPad because I like their "function over form" sort of philosophy. My question is if I could get away with buying a second hand, barely used with 2 years and 8 months left on warranty t470s instead of a brand new t480 for more than double the price? Tl;dr Is it worth saving $700 on a T-series ThinkPad by going with a 7th gen i5 instead of an 8th gen one? [link] [comments]

First of all : Thank you for helping me out ! Second: I probably do not need this much horsepower for my regular tasks and I don't know if it is understandable, but I just like to have some extra power. I just feel more secure, knowing I have power to fall back on. Thanks and cheers ! [link] [comments]

Posted: 10 Aug 2018 01:32 AM PDT Hey, I have a desktop beast with all the required parts to do 144FPS G-sync gaming bla bla bla. A few years back I was in uni and while there i had a macbook pro 13 which i loved. It was strong enough to play some games on low/medium like dota2 looked nice, was light, durable and the battery was infinite. I am also a software developer and this machine was great for anything that I needed at the time. Skip a few years. I sold it because it was getting old and got the 1st Razer Blade Stealth (cheapest model).I hated it - the plastic feel, the super slow performance. At this point I decided I dont want a lap top and a few more years passed. I now want a lap top. For: - Ocasional gaming - mostly dota2 or some more basic things like Cult Simulator for example. - Ocasional development - mostly scripting - Very good battery life so that I don't bother charging it every day - Enough RAM to be able to run VMs because i do some side work as a pen-tester. - Id prefer if the lap top is smaller (less than 15") So far I researched the options and what i saw was that in most cases the : - Dell XPS 13 / New Dell XPS 13 is the most recommended option. Also right at its back is the new:- Razer Blade Stealth and from what I can see they both pretty much have the same specs and are at this point very nice builds and closer to a macbook pro. On the other hand I noticed that there is a new boy in town: - Huawei MateBook X Pro I do not want a macbook because i very much dislike the keyboard, touchbar and price of the newer models. ty. Edit: added that i want it to be on the small side. [link] [comments]

Preferably under $500 ($600 if necessary), USA
Battery life would be helpful, specs-for-money secondary. No preference towards 2-in-1–it could be useful, but I have no strong feelings towards it.
Somewhat, I'll be carrying it a lot.
Windows or Mac. The college also says this on its website:
N/A.
No, but I'd consider the ability to do so an added bonus (if it comes without a significant price increase).
See above
N/A.
I'm getting this laptop as a companion for a desktop PC that I will be building later this fall. The desktop will provide better specs for storage, processing, and gaming, while the laptop's portability allows it to be taken to class. As such, it doesn't need to be too impressive: it'll be for note-taking, writing, and research, and therefore needs word processing, Internet access, and not much else. My college has also provided me with the following minimum and recommended specs. I am assuming it will be all right if these are met by the desktop and not the laptop, so meeting them is welcome but not required for the laptop. If this assumption is mistaken, please let me know. Processor Min: Intel Core i5, Rec. Intel Core i7 Storage Min: 320 GB @ 7200 RPM, Rec. 500 GB @ 7200 RPM Memory Min: 4 GB, Rec. 8 GB Screen Size Min. 13", Rec. 15" OS Min. Mac OS 10.9/Windows 7 32-bit, Rec. Mac OS 10.10 or 10.11/Windows 7 64-bit or later [link] [comments]
[US][~$1300] Help with specs-- Well-built ultrabook, gaming and photoshop Posted: 09 Aug 2018 04:40 PM PDT Despite my username I'm currently deciding between Lenovo Yoga 920, Huawei Matebook X Pro, Asus Zenbook Flip 14 UX461 (probably 461UN), Asus Zenbook 13 UX331UN and Asus Zenbook 14UX430UN (and maybe the HP Spectre x360? or Dell XPS 13? There's so many options...). I don't really know much about hardware so in terms of 16gb over 8gb of RAM is really necessary, or what integrated graphics can do I'm a bit lost. It is important to me to have something that's built well as I'm an engineering student who moves around a lot.
Edit: Also forgot to mention an absolute deal-breaker for me is if the hinge is too wobbly. A little wobble (as is inevitable with many 2 in 1s, is ok though). I haven't been able to see many of these laptops in person, though, so if you have one, do comment please! [link] [comments]

All day college class and games laptop Posted: 09 Aug 2018 07:53 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $3000 USA. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life is a must for college, but having the muscle for a game or two inbetween classes is also a plus. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** The lighter the better, but not so thin that overheating is an issue. Loud fans in class is not a fun experience. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Any/all of the above. I use Linux on a daily basis, and am comfortable working/gaming on any OS. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 14-15 is ideal. Anything with enough real estate to have a couple windows open at a time. 144hz is a big plus. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Mainly computer science school work, gaming on the side/in boring classes. I'll most likely need to run a few virtual machines on the laptop as well. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Definitely going to be running the new WoW expansion, preferably on medium-high at 60+ fps, depending on screen refresh rate. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I might be in the minority, but I dislike the touch screen fad. A solid keyboard/trackpad is a must, I do a lot of coding. Metal body is a plus. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I've been looking at all the typical laptops seen on the sub (Blade 15, Macbook Pro, XPS 15, Aero 15X, GS-65) and I'm looking for some opinions. The placement of the internals / QC of the Blade have me a bit worried, plus the ? key is in a dumb spot. The new Macbook Pro's thermal throttle like crazy, and the XPS 15 is right behind. The Aero 15X doesn't seem to have those issues, but I've heard the keyboard isn't the greatest. I have an old MSI GS-60 that gets a laughable 45 minutes on battery, and actually burned my leg a few years back, so that's put me off of them unless they've made some serious changes. Nvidia optimus is definitely better for me than gsync, the extra battery life from not running GPU all day will definitely help out. The Macbook doesn't really concern me in that aspect, I know Apple handles that relatively well. I also am really interested in the thunderbolt 3 capabilities of the modern devices. I'd like to in the future have a one cable solution to my setup; get home from class and one cable connects keyboard, mouse, displays, etc. If anyone has any experience in this area I'd love to hear about it as well.
