Am I stupid for thinking about buying a MacBook? Posted: 07 Aug 2018 09:58 AM PDT Like a lot of people here, I'm starting college this fall and need a laptop for school. I don't have a major that requires a beefy computer, I'll mostly just use it for word processing, research, and browsing. My budget is $1400 at the most. I had a Surface Pro 3 for High School and I wasn't a big fan of the 2 in 1 design, as I couldn't comfortably place it on my lap, and I just want a traditional clamshell design. I have been doing research on the XPS 13, Surface Go (I know this goes against my last statement), Surface Laptop, and 12 inch MacBook. More than anything, I just want something that will LAST. Build quality, solid hardware and ease of use are my only real requirements. Is a MacBook a waste at this point, or is it a quality machine that will last me 4 (hopefully) years? Or should I focus on Windows based machines? [link] [comments] |

Budget laptop for personal use Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:19 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 450-500$ - Russia Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply I would prefer the best specification for the money. Good battery life would be a great advantage. How important is weight and thinness to you? I would prefer a laptop with less weight such I will carry it around all the time Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13' or 14' Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be using office apps (Ms Office, Google Docs) , SlideBean for making presentation, Trello, online meeting software If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? na Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? The good keyboard and touchpad are important. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was looking at Lenovo IdeaPad 520S (Core I3-7100U, 4GB, DD4, SSD - 256Gb) and Acer Swift 1 (Intel Pentium N4200, 4GB, DDR3, 128GB) Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Looking to replace my aging MBP- <$1000 US Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:00 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Less than $1000, US **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life and hopefully specs that'll age very well. My usage will most likely consist of watching stuff, browsing and work. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not really, I would only be using this at home, mostly. But I hope it's something that's not too heavy in the event I do bring it out. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15.6 is preferable but I can be persuaded to go up to 17.3. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I'm hoping to get into gaming but I haven't really gotten around to it. Maybe in the future. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I'm not fussy about FPS and whatnot. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I'm hoping to get something that includes an optical drive. Reliable build quality is also a must. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I'm eyeing these two but I'm not sure yet. Some of the reviews are off-putting. I'm hoping you guys have suggestions. Looking for a $300 to $800 photo editing (Lightroom and Photoshop) 13" laptop. Posted: 07 Aug 2018 10:02 PM PDT My budget is around $300 to $800, but the cheaper side would be better as this will only be for a portable editing machine for on the go editing.. My bag I use almost fits my Surface Laptop , but it can't so I'm looking for a laptop that is slightly smaller than it, which would be most 13 inch laptops I would think. 2 in 1 would be nice, but it is not necessary, and I don't care if there's not a lot of storage since all of my pictures save to my cloud storage on adobe. I know this is a really specific request so I don't mind if the laptop is a little more expensive or if it's an older model

Posted: 08 Aug 2018 03:38 AM PDT I'm going to start college and the school gave me minimum requirements and recommended requirements. It should at least have an i5 with 8gb ram. Recommended is i7 with 16gb ram. Screen size must be 15". The specs are very high so I am willing to spend 1500€. I would like to buy a gaming laptop if I have to buy something powerful anyways. A few specific things that are important are the keyboard quality, battery duration and it should be easy to carry. What laptop do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

I wanted to buy a gaming laptop right now for max 2.5k$ but than hear that the new cards might be coming out really soon. Would you recommend to wait it out? Laptop: >17" and >$1000 (School and Work) Posted: 07 Aug 2018 08:39 PM PDT
None. I generally use my laptop for web surfing, watching videos, and word processing.
N/A
I am only used to using budget laptops so I'll take as many goodies as I can get. Again, screen resolution is probably the most important item on the list but honestly, I'm unaware of what I've been missing out on by only using >$250 laptops.
I'm going into my last year of law school and figured it was time for an upgrade. I don't do anything too complex beyond using Microsoft Office and web surfing. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
Laptop for college and light gaming. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:37 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** €800-1200. The Netherlands **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Around 14 inch. **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Just a solid laptop with preferably 250 gb SSD, no extra HD needed, DDR4 and a solid I5/I7 and something decent enough to play my listed games. Thin like 1.2 kg (~2.6 lbs) isn't a must, around 1.8 kg (4 lbs) should be fine too. I posted this recently too but would like some more advice :) [link] [comments] |

Right now I'm looking at a Zenbook Pro and an XPS 15, but I'm open to other suggestions. I haven't pulled the trigger on the Zenbook mostly because I'm wondering if it'd be worth the price jump to an 8th gen processor (for the sake of longevity). https://www.amazon.com/Asus-ZenBook-Pro-UX550VE-XH71-Professional/dp/B07F79W2BC https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-15/spd/xps-15-9570-laptop/dncwxb1656s [link] [comments] |

Laptop for Gaming/Photo Editing under $2,700 Posted: 07 Aug 2018 09:04 PM PDT Hey everyone, Like the title suggests, looking for a good gaming laptop with a decently color calibrated screen for photo/video editing as well as an additional m.2 drive for expanded storage. I am going to college soon for Visual Communications and would like to try and find a laptop that can fit somewhere in the middle. I know as far as gaming laptops are concerned its hard to get one with great gaming performance and a really nice screen so Photo Editing takes a back burner to gaming being the more priority, I was looking for a laptop that is at least using the new Coffee Lake architecture with a 1070 (laptop variants, obviously) I originally had my eyes set on the new Razer Blade 15" but I had to drop it because it doesn't really offer expandable storage, I would have to remove the storage that the laptop came with to install my own Which was a purchase killer for me, I have a 1Tb M.2 on standby to install when I pull the trigger on a laptop and would like to have a split in my device manager between one storage option with video editing/college work and another drive with games. I realize that I am being kind of picky and probably everything I am asking for might not be in one laptop, so im always up for suggestions and seeing whats available to me, obviously if one does fit the description above Id love to hear about it so I can research it! Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
