Budget to Mid-Range, Entry-Level Programming with capability of light-medium, casual/esports titles gaming.

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 11:14 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: 2,500SAR-3800SAR/670USD-1000USD Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 isn't necessary but sure. Good battery life can be useful as well on the go but again, not very necessary. How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite important. I still go to school and portability will be a blessing. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows mostly. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-14" is preferred, but a 15.6" that is more modern and compact will be more than okay. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Only gaming and entry-level programming. C#, C++, HTML etc. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Casual GTA V at visually acceptable settings, 1080p, 60FPS+ with minimal to no drops. CS:GO, I usually play at lower settings, Skyrim: Special Edition also at optimized settings at 1080p, 60FPS+. Watch Dogs 2, similar settings at 1080p, 60FPS+. For Honor, also on similar settings at 1080p, 60FPS+. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality isn't required but definitely helpful in the long run. A finger print reader would be cool but not necessary. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Upgradability would be very nice. Again, I'm a young college student taking Information Technology. I also work at my brother's office to do basic data encoding. I really wanted to build a custom PC but I'm always on the go.

Am I stupid for thinking about buying a MacBook?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 09:58 AM PDT

Like a lot of people here, I'm starting college this fall and need a laptop for school. I don't have a major that requires a beefy computer, I'll mostly just use it for word processing, research, and browsing. My budget is $1400 at the most. I had a Surface Pro 3 for High School and I wasn't a big fan of the 2 in 1 design, as I couldn't comfortably place it on my lap, and I just want a traditional clamshell design. I have been doing research on the XPS 13, Surface Go (I know this goes against my last statement), Surface Laptop, and 12 inch MacBook. More than anything, I just want something that will LAST. Build quality, solid hardware and ease of use are my only real requirements. Is a MacBook a waste at this point, or is it a quality machine that will last me 4 (hopefully) years? Or should I focus on Windows based machines?

Gaming Laptop under €800 for UK/Ireland

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:21 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
Buying in Ireland/UK with a budget of €800

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
A better battery life would be nice but if it can last two hours between charges doing word processing I'd be happy.
Core i5 and GTX1050/1050ti levels of performance would be desirable.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight is a bit important, anything more than 3kg would be too heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
Windows if possible, though I should be able to get an academic version myself.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Microsoft office
      MATLAB
      2D CAD

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
CRPGs, older FPS titles and strategy games (XCOM, total war) and at 60Hz. I don't play online multiplayer games. I am aware that games like total war will run poorly on a machine like this.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
An IPS display would be desirable as would a UK keyboard layout.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am willing to purchase from anywhere in the EU.
I am not under any time pressure to make this purchase and will probably buy before the end of September.
While the laptop will be used for gaming I am not a fan of the "gamer" aesthetic.

Looking to replace my aging MBP- <$1000 US

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:00 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Less than $1000, US

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life and hopefully specs that'll age very well. My usage will most likely consist of watching stuff, browsing and work. *

**How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not really, I would only be using this at home, mostly. But I hope it's something that's not too heavy in the event I do bring it out. *

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows *

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15.6 is preferable but I can be persuaded to go up to 17.3. *

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I'm hoping to get into gaming but I haven't really gotten around to it. Maybe in the future. *

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I'm not fussy about FPS and whatnot. *

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I'm hoping to get something that includes an optical drive. Reliable build quality is also a must. *

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I'm eyeing these two but I'm not sure yet. Some of the reviews are off-putting. I'm hoping you guys have suggestions. Dell High Performance Business Laptop PC 15.6" FHD LED-Backlit Display Intel i7-8550U Processor 16GB DDR4 RAM 1TB HDD+128GB SSD DVD-RW HDMI Webcam Bluetooth Windows 10.

Looking for a $300 to $800 photo editing (Lightroom and Photoshop) 13" laptop.

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 10:02 PM PDT

My budget is around $300 to $800, but the cheaper side would be better as this will only be for a portable editing machine for on the go editing.. My bag I use almost fits my Surface Laptop , but it can't so I'm looking for a laptop that is slightly smaller than it, which would be most 13 inch laptops I would think.

2 in 1 would be nice, but it is not necessary, and I don't care if there's not a lot of storage since all of my pictures save to my cloud storage on adobe. I know this is a really specific request so I don't mind if the laptop is a little more expensive or if it's an older model

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $300-$800 USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 not necessary, Battery life is a plus, I don't mind an intel core m3 or even an i3

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? size is important, it just needs to be ultra portable

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows preferred

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. photo editing only

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? n/a

    Gaming laptop for college?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 03:38 AM PDT

I'm going to start college and the school gave me minimum requirements and recommended requirements. It should at least have an i5 with 8gb ram. Recommended is i7 with 16gb ram. Screen size must be 15". The specs are very high so I am willing to spend 1500€.

I would like to buy a gaming laptop if I have to buy something powerful anyways. A few specific things that are important are the keyboard quality, battery duration and it should be easy to carry.

What laptop do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance.

Would you recommend to wait it out? How was it in the past with the delay between a new gtx card release and the release of first laptops with them inside?

Laptop: >17" and >$1000 (School and Work)

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 08:39 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Preferably under $1,000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Probably good battery life or best specifications. Never had a 2 in 1 laptop so I am agnostic on that front.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? High importance. I've been using some pretty old, bulky laptops (an old lenovo T420 currently) so I'd like whatever laptop I get to be on the light side.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I have only ever used Windows but I am open to using a different OS.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17″ is probably too big. Resolution is more important than size.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

None. I generally use my laptop for web surfing, watching videos, and word processing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I am only used to using budget laptops so I'll take as many goodies as I can get. Again, screen resolution is probably the most important item on the list but honestly, I'm unaware of what I've been missing out on by only using >$250 laptops.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm going into my last year of law school and figured it was time for an upgrade. I don't do anything too complex beyond using Microsoft Office and web surfing.

    Thanks for the help!

    €800-1200. The Netherlands

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Good battery life and best specifications for the money.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Important, I don't want big and heavy gaming laptop.

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    Around 14 inch.

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    Only gaming.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

No triple A games, just games like csgo, LoL and factorio. 60 fps is desired.

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Not really, not interested in touch-screen.

I don't want a laptop that looks like a gaming laptop. Just a solid laptop with preferably 250 gb SSD, no extra HD needed, DDR4 and a solid I5/I7 and something decent enough to play my listed games. Thin like 1.2 kg (~2.6 lbs) isn't a must, around 1.8 kg (4 lbs) should be fine too.

I posted this recently too but would like some more advice :)

    Laptop for programming and gaming

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:33 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: The total budget for the laptop is 1300 ( if it is a little bit over, it is Okey). I will buy the laptop in the Netherlands.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. The performance is important. Most of the time the laptop will be plugged in. I travel a lot but never longer then 2 hours.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I m a young lad so this isn't important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Definitely windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want to use the laptop for programming as well for gaming. A small list of the programs I want to run.

    • visual studio

    • Europa universalis IV

    • civilization 6

Nice settings and high FPS are nice to have will gaming buti always had a bad laptop, so I m pretty used to bad performances ( playing overwatch with 20 FPS on low quality... Luckily with mercy you don't have to shoot often)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Only specific requirement is that I want to have a SSD.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. While searching for a laptop I found this one:

I looks like a good fit but I m not sure yet.

    Long-lasting laptop for college

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 10:33 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:** $1000 United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like a 2 in 1 form factor with good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness are pretty important to me, I dont want to be lugging around something bulky

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen would be nice but I think thats a given with the 2 in 1 requirement I gave. Finger print reader would also be nice but I can definitely get by without it. Touchpad and keyboard dont have to be perfect but I definitely dont want low quality like a cheap chromebook.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Now here is the catch; it has to be sold from Costcos website, I have in store credit that I would like to use. I have researched the XPS 13 and have only seen praise for that laptop but was wondering if there was something better for the price currently.

14" - 16" linux laptop with good build quality for general use & social gaming. US $1300 - $1500

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 06:34 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US $1300 - $1500. I'd prefer to keep it below $1300, but I'd be willing to go up to $1500 if it was worth the extra money.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money. I'd prefer good specs and hardware over battery life for the sake of longevity. I think I'd like a 2 in 1, but I'd rather have a really solid laptop than a pretty good 2 in 1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important, but not at the cost of being able to service it myself.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I will be running linux, but I would probably keep a small windows partition if it came with the computer. No point in throwing away a license.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" - 16"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I occasionally do recreational audio, video, and image editing. These are always small personal projects that aren't too resource heavy.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'd be using this laptop to play games socially, so I don't really care what quality they run at as long as I can play them with other people. However, I would like to be able to play games that come out during the lifespan of the laptop. Games I play regularly include: Civ 6, Starcraft II, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Portal 2.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? The magic words for me are: Quality, Longevity, and Self Serviceability. Must haves include: Backlit Keyboard, Quality Trackpad (I really like the MacBook Pro one), Durability (I'm kind of clumsy and sometimes my stuff takes a beating). It would be nice to have: CD Drive, 2 In 1, Touchscreen

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My current laptop is a MacBook Pro that's lasted about 8 years. I'm looking for something of comparable or better build quality that will last at least as long. I'd also like something that I can service myself as I live very far from any store that could perform repairs.

Right now I'm looking at a Zenbook Pro and an XPS 15, but I'm open to other suggestions. I haven't pulled the trigger on the Zenbook mostly because I'm wondering if it'd be worth the price jump to an 8th gen processor (for the sake of longevity).

Dell Xps 13, Asus Vivobook S510UN or Acer Nitro 5 i7

No preference for 2 in 1 factor. Good battery life is a plus.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Light enough that I can carry it around, thinness isn't a big concern

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** A good keyboard and touchpad is important.

Laptop For Longevity and Hard Work with specific specs

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:47 AM PDT

Looking for a recommendation for a laptop with the following:
Extremely durable build (hinges dont break, solid build, will last at least 5 years) for instance, the dell precision tanks are very good as their internal and external builds are quite durable (in my experience)

512 SSD, I7 processor build for maintaining high workloads (i make CPU intensive music) 16gb of ram, NO HDD, NO touchscreen.

I come here after doing research to no avail, as I keep running to laptops which look flimsy or are massively overpriced. Any tips, help, sources, or anything at all would be amazing.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -windows-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -15.6 in or less-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -only light gaming-

Sexy, Powerful and Portable: $1250-$2200 (Goodbye For Good Apple! USA) -- I need something that handles my Web Design/Development, Music Production, Video Editing and some light Gaming (read more below

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 02:27 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My ideal budget would not be to spend more than $2000.00, although I understand I need this laptop to do a lot.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. The best specifications for the money. When I'm taking this laptop around, its primary job will be design, photo/editing and some light music production.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like something sleek and sexy. The aesthetics are important to me. as I'm a lifelong Macbook Pro user.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'd prefer either Win10 or MacOS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Honestly, I don't want anything that's massive. I'd prefer a laptop with a sleek 14"-15" screen. This is also because I'd like to find some kind of dock to utilize when I'm

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Music production (used DAILY): Ableton Live 8, Protools, Komplete 11, primarily Maschine Standalone and an audio interface for sampling. Graphics (Used Daily): Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe XD, Sketch. Video/Motion Graphics (Once a week): Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro, Cinema 4d, Maya.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? There are a lot of games I would like to play, Red Dead Redemption, Fortnite, Battlefield V (antyhing battlefield), Far Cry, Borderlands etc. I'd like some advice on whether to restrict this rig to just creative endeavors and go with a console or dedicated gaming rig.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Absolutely needs a great keyboard. Non of that new Macbook Pro Bullshit.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm interested to hear what you guys come up with and if there really is something out there that can do everything I was it to do really well. **Something else I should note! While I will be using this rig for pitching to clients, demonstrating prototypes and the like, when I have it at home I want to find a stylish way to DOCK IT. Preferably a solution that allows for at least 2 monitors. Perhaps that's why I've already looked into the Razer Stealth with eGPU.

Thank you in advance for all your ideas! I appreciate all the help and would be happy to clarify.

Laptop for Gaming/Photo Editing under $2,700

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 09:04 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

Like the title suggests, looking for a good gaming laptop with a decently color calibrated screen for photo/video editing as well as an additional m.2 drive for expanded storage. I am going to college soon for Visual Communications and would like to try and find a laptop that can fit somewhere in the middle.

I know as far as gaming laptops are concerned its hard to get one with great gaming performance and a really nice screen so Photo Editing takes a back burner to gaming being the more priority, I was looking for a laptop that is at least using the new Coffee Lake architecture with a 1070 (laptop variants, obviously)

I originally had my eyes set on the new Razer Blade 15" but I had to drop it because it doesn't really offer expandable storage, I would have to remove the storage that the laptop came with to install my own Which was a purchase killer for me, I have a 1Tb M.2 on standby to install when I pull the trigger on a laptop and would like to have a split in my device manager between one storage option with video editing/college work and another drive with games.

I realize that I am being kind of picky and probably everything I am asking for might not be in one laptop, so im always up for suggestions and seeing whats available to me, obviously if one does fit the description above Id love to hear about it so I can research it!

    Thanks in advance.
