I'm looking for a laptop that meets the following criteria Posted: 27 Jul 2018 03:23 AM PDT I've been scouring the internet all week now to find a laptop with the following:
I'm in the UK so I can't realistically import anything, and I'd prefer to steer clear of a custom laptop building site as I've just got done having a bad experience with one of those. My budget is around £2000. Any advice given is much appreciated :) [link] [comments] |

Am wondering if this is a good deal since everything I find with a gtx1080 with i7 processor seems to go for around 1900 anyway. Also, it is 60hz IPS. It this good or bad? Finding a lot of conflicting information on whether getting a 120hz monitor is better. Thanks for the help. Hope I followed guidelines. :) [link] [comments] |
Want to play the upcoming WoW expansion pack Posted: 26 Jul 2018 06:43 PM PDT What's the cheapest I could get away with medium - good settings with more than 50 fps? Would $500 work? I don't care about anything else really. Just performance and price. I'd prefer for it to look like a normal laptop and not a gaming laptop, but I'll settle if it's a good deal. Looking around on here the Acer Nitro 5 would be perfect. It seems to be a good deal, but it also seems overkill for just some measly medium-good WoW. And would prefer to spend 500 rather than 700 [link] [comments] |
Looking new laptop for college Posted: 27 Jul 2018 02:05 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1000-$1500 (Preferably on the cheaper side); USA * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2 in 1 is always nice, but not necessary (two on a scale of ten for must have (ten being most necessary)). Because I will be traveling around with it, a good battery life is 8/10 on the must-have scale. Obviously I want a good bang for my buck so probably also an 8/10 for value. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I'm going to be carrying this around campus so preferably light and thin. I used to have a macbook air, so that weight is nice; so anything between 2-5 lbs. I would put weight as a 9/10 and thinness as a 7/10 Side note: a thin bezel is always attractive and make a cpu lighter, so yeah... that would be good too. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows please- * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Anything between 11"-15" is good, but I would prefer it to be around 13". * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Yes, as an engineering student, plan to run autoCAD or solidworks * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** A good keyboard is a 7/10. Reliable build is 9/10 need- I have butter fingers and tend to drop things. Touchscreen is nice; especially because I like to draw in my free time: 4/10. Finger print reader isn't necessary; I had one on an old laptop and it worked like shit (maybe because I had no idea how to use it though...). Drives don't matter that much as long as it can hold enough stuff.Input devices don't really matter if it has a good keyboard and trackpad. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I'm heading off to college next year and plan to pursue BME (Biomedical engineering), so something that has good processing power and storage for the programs/software are a 10/10 must. Dell G7 vs Razer Blade 15 vs MSI G65 Stealth Posted: 26 Jul 2018 06:56 PM PDT I'm looking for a high end video editing laptop. It doesn't have to be super portable, but needs to move sometimes. I have a MBP, but require Windows for a new project. It has to have an i7 (or i9, I suppose). I've narrowed the options down to the Dell G7, Razer Blade 15, and MSI G65 Stealth. While price is a big factor, I'd rather buy the right machine for the job in this price range. I just bought the G7 to try it, but am not in love with it and can return it within the next 2 weeks if need be. These 3 seem to be similarly equipped -- are there any major differences, or should I just live with the G7 because it's so much cheaper than the others? Does anyone have better recommendations? ————— * Total budget and country of purchase: US, under $2300

A not so quick and kinda long update on the Dell g7 15. Posted: 27 Jul 2018 12:11 AM PDT I posted here about a month ago for advice and eventually ended up getting the Dell g7 15 from Best buy. The biggest thing people were talking about was the fact that it has 2 panels (lg and auo) and it was completely random as to which one you get. The lg was supposedly horrible and capped at 60 hz but the other better and theoretically could be increased to 75-90 Hz. I initially got the lg panel, for the 1069$ model (8gb RAM & 256 ssd) but within a week it had major software issues so I returned it. The lg panel was not much color accurate so def a no go for vid editing but pretty normal for casual use. It has a warmish hue to it but you wouldn't be able to tell a difference unless you placed a color accurate panel next to it so it really boils down to how many changes you really value that. Now within the week of returning it, for some reason the leave of the laptops dropped down by 50-100$ for each model in the series. Along with this Best buy also had a student deal on the 16 gig, 128ssd + 1 TB, which made it drop down to 1099$ (in the us). This time I ended up getting the AUO panel which is better than the lg one. This laptop has been running great so far. Strengths - 1) Price - I honestly think this is by far the best laptop for it's price right now. It's not as thick as it looks due to it's back chassis, but super sturdy and well built at the same time. 2) Thermal - Bouncing off the last point, the closest any laptop comes to it (customer service, price, etc) has a much worse thermal results than this. I think Dell did a pretty smart think by putting Max q graphic card in it which makes sure that the system runs a lot cooler than a lot of other laptops, paired with the nice cooling fan system as well. This also drops the price without sacrificing on quality 3) looks and feels great - whether you get the black or white version, it doesn't scream GAMERY to the people around you. It's sturdy and nlends right in with a nice overall look. Concerns - 1) does the Max q give bad graphics? - No. The graphics from the Max q is much better than the ti and surprisingly close to the normal 1060. There are a lot of bechmarks online comparing these. I personally don't feel like the price increase + thermal increase with the 1060 is worth the small performance increase but that could just be because I'm not the most intensive gamer in the world. 2) Is it heavy/ portable? - Yes and No. It's normal weight for the specs that you are getting so if you're a student like me that needs these specs for college or any other reason, this isn't really that heavy. You can definitely spend closer to 2k however and get lighter laptops with same / better specs though. I've carried it to class regularly and it really hasn't been a problem at all so far. The only problem is if I need to go to the library/ will be out for more than 5-6 hours, I'll need to carry the FAT ASS charger this comes with and that extra weight feels like 10 pound rock pulling me down. Maybe I'm exaggerating but I really don't understand why it had to be so big for a 56WHr battery. 3) Did you try to overclock the display panel? - No not yet. I have the information to do it and can share it if someone wants but I will most likely be doing it after the first year as it voids your warranty :( Summary - I really can't find any fault with this laptop for now. I wish the display panels were consistent/ just AUO in every model but it isn't so and quite frankly it isn't a deal breaker in any way, at least not for me. The laptop holds itself well, runs cools and with a spill proof keyboard I'm expecting this bad boy to last me a long time. No laptop really offers so much with this price and if you want to save more money you can always go for the g5 series. They are mostly the same with the typical red/black colors but you can get a really good machine well under 1000$ there as well. Alternatively if you have 150 - 300 $ more to spend, I'd recommend checking out some other great products like the predator helios 300 (144 hz screen) or the NEW omen by hp 15 ( not optimal thermals and some models not vr ready). Feel free to ask me any questions and I'll be happy to answer. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 11:03 PM PDT [Apologies for it not being in the format, I included all of the same information though] Hey, I'm looking for an ultra book that has gaming potential, but nothing to extraordinary. I am looking for something sleek that passes by as a regular laptop. I listed my preferred specs and must haves down below. I don't really want touchscreen as I don't use it, but it's fine if the laptop has it included. I believe you can turn this off anyways to conserve battery/ save some processing power. Price range wise, I'm willing to go up to $1,000 USD, maybe a little over if it's the perfect machine. Not trying to spend too much though if I don't have to. I will not be using this for anything that requires too much power. Specs:
Must Haves: - bluetooth - usb 3.1 (type a) - usb c - 8 gb + RAM - 1/2 TB + storage (ssd would be nice too) Bonus: - back lit keyboard option (not necessary at all, just might be helpful) Do not want:- cd drive [link] [comments] |

TouchScreen cd/dvd laptop under ¥500. Posted: 26 Jul 2018 10:15 PM PDT I'm in Japan but I'm having family visit from the U.S next week. They will go shopping tmmr for me so I'm thinking of finally replacing my Fujitsu i7 that's just about dead. What kind of laptop under 500$ would you suggest?everything here is way too expensive and I prefer something from a walk-in store like Walmart or Best Buy. I'll be using for basic things at my job. Weight and thinnest not important. 4-8g ram and 1T storage, touchscreen and dvd drive is important.

Laptop for law student (already own gaming desktop) Posted: 26 Jul 2018 06:16 PM PDT Hi all, I'm going to law school and have to give up the 5th gen Lenovo X1 Carbon I've been using for work. I have a gaming desktop that I imagine I'll do any serious work on (i7 6700k/GTX1080) but need a decent laptop to take notes, work in the library, and general usage when I'm visiting my girlfriend on the weekends. Budget is $500-$700 US. Desired specs: +13-15in screen, minimum 1080p resolution +256 GB SSD + Ryzen 3 or i5 equivalent + 8 GB RAM Nice-to-haves: aluminum chassis, thin/light, 8+ hours battery life, 2-in-1 form factor would be a plus, but not mandatory So far I've found the HP Envy x360 13z on sale for $660 (Ryzen 3) with all of the above, as well as the Lenovo 720s 13in with Ryzen 5 for $650. Any other suggestions for what I should consider? [link] [comments] |
Looking for a VR capable mobile workstation - Good thermals and durability are a must. Posted: 26 Jul 2018 10:00 PM PDT Hi All, As in the title, I am in the market for a VR capable mobile workstation. I'd be comfortable paying up to $3500. I am a systems engineer and definitely need as many cores as I can handle. I am spinning up VM's, destroying them, running automated tests, compiling code, etc. Also looking for 32GB of RAM or more. When I am not working, I love using my Samsung Odyssey HMD (Windows Mixed Reality) and need the power to play Skyrim VR, Beat Saber, and hopefully 2 more years of VR titles. Maybe not maxed out, but definitely adequate to avoid dipping frame rates. I plan on lugging this thing every day in a backpack. I am already used to my company issued Thinkpad P51, so I'm not concerned about weight; but I wouldn't want to go much larger. Most importantly, I want the hardware to last and that means good thermals and durability. No matter what the laptop, I plan to re-paste (perhaps with Liquid Metal) and under-volt to eek out as much thermal performance as I can. I've been eyeing the Razer Blade 15 (2018) but I've heard some issues about thermals. So I am wondering what else I could consider. [link] [comments] |
Windows 10 touchscreen device must work with stylus hopefully under $500 Posted: 26 Jul 2018 09:30 PM PDT
My courses require that I use a touch screen laptop with stylus to take math exams. I need a responsive laptop running windows 10 that's under $500 that can handle a solid amount of writing. Is this possible? What do you all recommend? I have a laptop I use now that I prefer. [link] [comments] |
Lenovo Yoga 720 vs 920 or neither Posted: 26 Jul 2018 08:39 PM PDT I need a laptop for college and after some research i've decided on these two but i'm not very sure on which one or if i should even get it. I have a budget of $1200. I will be majoring in computer science so i was thinking something with a good processor and the 920 comes with an 8th gen i7 while the 720 comes with a 7th gen. I also recently found out that i can't take my battle station to college so i wanted something with a little gaming performance. I play mostly mobas like league and smite. Occasionally some guild wars 2 and GTA V or titles with similar graphics intensity. The 720 comes with a 1050 while the 920 comes with Intel UHD 620 i've heard it was decent for playing low spec games but i don't really know. I'm just wondering if there's a better option out there for the price. I don't really care if its a 2 in 1 I just don't want a bulky laptop for college since i will need some portability. I also like a good keyboard that's why i chose lenovo for their decent travel. [link] [comments] |
