    Weekly Questions Thread - July 02, 2018

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 03:56 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

(Cease & Desist) - Can using Android’s Notification Listener violate another apps T&C’s?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 07:12 AM PDT

So I got a Cease & Desist recently requesting a takedown of one of my apps from a giant company, citing it violates their terms of service. Would love people's opinions on whether they feel this claim had merit..

I detailed the whole situation with technical details in the Medium post I've linked to below but the cliff notes are..

The app used the notification listener to listener for messages from specific apps the user had preselected like Telegram, FB Messenger etc.. & then would look for the quick reply intent in that notification & use that to send an automatic reply like "I'm out of the office" or "I'm driving" etc..

The cease & desist I received cites how it's against the T's&C's of this particular companies app to reverse engineer, interact with it's private api's etc etc..

So my question is - if an app sends a notification to the Android system which contains an intent to initiate a reply, and Android gives us access to the notification via the Notification Listener - which the user has to explicitly enable, could interacting with that Intent in any way be a violation of T's&C's of any companies app? Or I guess more specifically, as it seems this is what would really be the reason a violation would be possible, can an app legally own an Intent & consider it IP?

Personally I find it a bit of a mind f*** - Developers can be granted access to notifications, we therefore have access to their intents, we can fire the intent ourselves & at no point are we actually interacting with any API's or services other than Android API's, plus we have absolutely zero control over what happens when we fire the intent so... thoughts? 🤷🤷

    https://medium.com/@lowcarbrob/cease-desist-can-using-androids-notification-listener-violate-another-apps-t-c-s-9bdd8d06059a

(For the record I took the app down - I imagine I'm not the only indie dev who doesn't have the money to hire legal counsel to find out if I'm actually in the wrong or not 🙈😔)

I wrote to support, tried live chat but the instance I clicked and started to write it disappeared. So now wait room, nothing more to do to change this situation. Have you faced something similar to this ? It's my first app.

"Learning Android Roadmap": is there such a thing that offers reasonable milestones and directions on what to learn and in which order?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:01 AM PDT

I'm trying to learn both by making by own applications and using the android developer's website guide, trying to read and implement new concepts even though I won't be using them immediately in my apps.

However, I found that the ordering of the guide is not ideal. What should I learn first?

Is there such a thing as a roadmap that can tell me in which order it is more reasonable to learn concepts?

For example, in which order should I learn about Activities, Services, Content Providers and Broadcast Receivers?

Should I learn first about intent filters or about data persistance and content providers?

I'm looking for a recommended roadmap. Something that will provide me with a checklist and milestones.

    Thank you!

Did i waste my time learning Android vs. React Native ?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 07:33 AM PDT

I am still a newb programmer but have taken the time to learn Android/Java over the past few years leading to a certification. I see many job postings require to know Android and iOS. However many seem fine with React Native.

For those that work in the industry, what skills do you require for mobile development?

Do you prefer developer learn React Native?

What are the disadvantages of using React big enough to make a difference?

    Android Developer Job Market

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:35 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm curious to know what the software development field looks like from and Android perspective. I'm currently a Salesforce development consultant, and I quite enjoy the job market and the perks that come along with it. This includes 80k with 3 years experience and the likely ability to change that to 100k easily, the ability to switch companies on a dime, the ability to work remotely, and likely anywhere in the US.

The problem is, I feel like this work is eating away at my soul. People need our product, but they don't want it. They don't care about what we have to offer, they're just doing their jobs, and want to get done with us as quickly as possible and move on to the next task so they can move on with their lives. I feel no passion in this part of the industry. When my friends talk about our field, they talk about the stability benefits, not the work or how it's impacting people's lives. In addition, I'm still working 60 hour work weeks regularly and our work carries all of the stress that corporate America tends to put into things. It leads me to ask the question, with all this stress, and all these hours, shouldn't I be focusing on something I enjoy? Something I feel passionate about?

When I was young, an Android development book was the first coding book I picked up. It's the reason I got into software development. It was the projects I gave the most heart to in school. When I'm done with work at the end of the day, I want to open up my personal laptop and work Android, even though these long hours and stress have left nothing in the tank. I wonder if that passion is enough to warrant a need to give this a try. I want Android books in my desk, not Salesforce books.

tldr: I'm considering switching from Salesforce to my passion, Android. My mind is telling me no, but my body, my body is telling me yes. I'm looking for a comparison of the job markets or information on the Android job market to help in my decision.

Is it allowed to have "Copy our BTC address" button in about screen?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:27 PM PDT

I want to enable my users to donate BTC if they find the app helpful. I simply added a TextView ("Donate and help us deliver new features faster") and a Button, which copies the BTC address into clipboard.

I am not sure if this is allowed? AFAIK you are not allowed to facilitate donation that would circumvent Google Play's billing system, but in this case all you do is copy a string to clipboard.

I asked Google and they didn't give any real answer:

Q: Is it allowed to have a button in About section of the app, which upon click, copies our Bitcoin address to the clipboard (for donation purposes)?

    A:

Unfortunately I'm not able to comment on your planned implementation. If you think your app is in compliance, please submit your app for another review. You may want to review the Developer Program Policies for additional policy guidance.

Kindly note that, donations may only be collected within an app under certain conditions:

Donations are only permitted for validated non-profit charitable organizations (for example, a validated 501(c)(3) charitable organization or the local equivalent).

Donations must be facilitated via a web browser, and any collection must be made through a secure payment system.

Alternatively, if you are not a charitable organization, you must not place donation functionality in your app, unless you accept payment through Google Play's in-app billing service or Paid app distribution on the Play Store.

Then I asked if they notify you before taking down you app:

Q: Since this seems to be a bit of gray area, I am wondering if you immediatelly ban apps/developers in case of (unintended) policy violations or do you first notify the developers so they can fix the problem? Not just in this specific case but generally speaking.

    A:

Please refer to our Enforcement page for more details regarding our enforcement process.

Unfortunately I'm not able to comment further or provide more information for your question here. If you think your app is in compliance, please submit your app for another review. You may want to review the Developer Program Policies for additional policy guidance.

Now I have even more doubts. Did anyone implement this and how did it go?

Some questions regarding Android design (Screenshots inside)

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 07:36 AM PDT

    Hello there,

I am currently programming an Android app and I have some questions regarding some design / functionality stuff. I screenshoted it in two apps I have on my phone to show you guys what I mean.

    This is the first one.

The starting activity should look something like this:

    https://imgur.com/a/MLDTRga

And if people click on the "Register" button, the register page should look something like this. Basically I am planning to make it transparent like this one and show the "underlying" activity.

    https://imgur.com/a/KQUf0Sf

The second one is this. I gave this little "+" Button in my app, like in this screenshot.

    https://imgur.com/a/UiBFoRl

And if it is clicked, it should expand like in this screenshot.

    https://imgur.com/a/3uJqHLq

I don't really know how to program this stuff so I would highly appreciate any tutorials, links or tipps on how to do that stuff.

Thank you very much in advance!

    Android Messages/Chat RCS for T-Mobile

App not reliably detecting non-consumable purchase

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:21 AM PDT

I've been getting quite a few complaints from users who have purchased premium upgrade but the app is not getting the proper response when it query the IAB service when the app is started. The response they are getting is billing unavailable. When they click Upgrade again, it is getting feedback that item is already owned. This means that the initial inventory query fails, and when they try to purchase same item, it correctly detects presence of purchased item. Some of these users have reported that this is intermittent. Sometimes app starts as a premium version, sometimes it is not.

Why is the purchased item not getting detected when the app starts a connection and query the inventory? How have you guys handled this?

I have also verified that they downloaded app using the right Google account.

    Firebase ML Kit Series

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 01:25 AM PDT

    Hi all!

Firebase ML Kit is a new Firebase service that really piqued my interest. AI was something I wanted to do in the past as well.

Now we got ML Kit to perform simple ML operations, namely Text Recognition, Face Detection, Barcode Scanning, Image Labelling, and Landmark Recognition.

On top of that, it also gives more experienced ML developers an extra layer of advantages in serving their Tensorflow model using ML Kit that handles things downloading model updates and also results in a smaller app binary size.

On my website, I covered each of them individually to make it as easy as possible for anyone to integrate these operations into their own app.

    https://www.ericdecanini.com/series/#ml-kit

I hope people will find this useful!
