Why people choose an overkill cpu for gaming with a budget gpu? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 04:20 AM PDT I've seen a lot of people going crazy with 8600k and a 1050ti for "gaming".. Why dont you get a 8100 with a 1060 or even a 1070 or choose the middle with a 8400 and a better gpu? For most games even the 8400 can be overkill even for 1440p. Am I such an idiot who doesn't get it? [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 09:34 AM PDT Not many people know this from what I see from constantly being on /hardwareswap , but if you plan to save money going with an ivy bridge or sandy bridge system skip a K processor and go for. A non k and a decent motherboard . For example I used a p8p67 pro and a i7 3770 which usually turbos to 3.9 but because ivy bridge was when intel was allowed mother board companies to allow an oc on non k chips through certain methods leads to my i7 running at 4.3 ghz . I paid $75 for that which is the average you can get used while the k version is still $120-$140 , which is not gonna give much performance upgrade for the money spent at a point when your already trying to save . It still runs great and does 1080p easily paired with a midrange card such a 1060 you're able to enjoy all your games at at least high settings@60 .hope this helped somebody [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jul 2018 06:16 PM PDT People seemed to like my case review from a few days ago and I think product reviews in general are a useful tool for this subreddit to have when making purchasing decisions, so that's why I'm doing this one. TL;DR at bottom I bought the Steam Controller during the Steam Summer Sale bundled with the Steam Link. It was a good discount at the time but the standard price is $50, so that's what I'm going to be using as my point of reference. As for an actual point of reference, I have a dual shock 4 and a Switch Pro controller on hand. Build Quality The Steam Controller has roughly the same build quality of an Xbox 360 controller. For me that means it probably won't just break when you're using it, but newer console controllers surpass it. The front has this glossy finish on it that I thought I was going to hate, but I actually don't. I still would have preferred a matte finish, but the glossy finish on it actually feels really high quality and is fairly fingerprint resistant. So good job there, I guess. The ABXY buttons are really stiff and quite small. I really like the feeling of the DS4 buttons and the Pro Controller buttons, but these are a step down from those. They're also glossy. The bumpers are also very stiff and when you click them you get a really loud "click" sound, like you're clicking a mouse. Maybe that was the intention but I don't like these bumpers. It should be noted that my complaints about the buttons and bumpers are mostly outside of their normal usecase. When I'm actually gaming with it, I don't really think "damn these buttons are so stuff!" but when I'm picking it up now for review, I do. Everything else is pretty good and feels good. I'd prefer a rechargeable internal battery rather than AA batteries, but I guess a lot of people like AA batteries for controllers and they seem to last a while (I have not had to replace them yet and I don't even know what happens when they run out). Ergonomics A controller should be comfortable to hold for people of all hand sizes. You're going to be holding it for a while. The Steam controller is not comfortable. It's not squarely uncomfortable, but I definitely do an internal ahhhh when I switch back to my DS4 controller which has been my main driver for a few years now. I think that the hand grips are just way too big. If I'm holding it normally, my thumbs barely reach the analog stick and ABXY buttons. It just feels like a strain to reach things, and I have pretty average sized hands for a 6' tall guy. Design thoughts These are my personal notes on the design, and not at all objective observation. I think they could have done with just 1 track pad. They made both the right analog stick a track pad and the D-Pad a track pad. I think just 1 would have been just fine. I would much rather have a 2nd analog stick than 2 track pads. The triggers feel sort of easy to let go of, if that makes sense. There really isn't a hook holding your fingers on it and I notice in driving games that my finger will slowly start slip off and I'll have to re-adjust. This is a rehashing of an old point but the whole controller just feels really big and clunky while not actually taking up a larger footprint than the DS4 Setup and Use Connecting the Steam Controller is really stupidly easy. It comes with a USB Bluetooth stick Using it in games is really why you'd buy this controller, right? Everything else I've said wouldn't matter if it was the best controller I've ever used, but it's not. On games that I'm familiar with (Rocket League, for example) I tried using the "community suggested" controller layout, but I had to go back to the standard default because I'm 1000 hours in on this game and trying to break that muscle memory just isn't going to happen. On games like that, it's decidedly worse than any other standard controller. But in games that I'm not familiar with, or haven't played in a long time, like Subnautica or GTAV, it's actually quite good. I'm still learning all the ins and outs of designing a controller layout so when I need to adjust a community layout, it can be a little challenging. But for Subnautica, it was really very good. I could control the depth very easily with the paddles and it was really very intuitive. The only thing that wasn't great was inventory management, unfortunately. For GTAV I tried using a community layout for a while because I wanted to stop doing the half controller, half mouse grip that I used to use. Basically, for driving and running around, I'd use a controller, but when I needed to shoot, I'd grab the mouse. I ended up going back to this because the gyro aiming wasn't as precise as I was hoping, and while driving if I rested my thumb on the track pad, the whole screen would shake and it was really nauseating. But with the standard layout it's fantastic. One of the things that used to bother me is that when I'm shooting, I couldn't run because the A button was on the other side of the controller and I'd have to stop aiming if I wanted to run. But the A button is tied to the left paddle, so I can give that a squeeze while I'm shooting and I'll start running! It's great. But it didn't free me from my mouse dependency like I had hoped it would. Another game where it's great is in Civ V (or I guess probably Civ VI too but I don't have that) on the TV through Steam Link. It's just so comfy to lay down and do some diplomacy with a controller. It's not perfect, and if I was at my desk I would absolutely use a keyboard and mouse, but the fact that it made this possible is pretty cool. One last complaint though is that when you're using a community layout, the on screen prompts are often wrong, or think you're using a keyboard and mouse. So you'll have to do some trial and error, but that's more of a problem with the game than the steam controller IMO. TL;DR It's not a perfect do it all controller. It has its design flaws which make it not as useful in every game. But there are games in my library that wouldn't be possible to play with a controller other than the Steam Controller, or games that simply aren't as good with a standard controller. I think there's a lot of room for improvement and at $50 I don't think I recommend it, especially when you can get a DS4 or an Xbox One controller for the same price or even a few bucks cheaper, but it's not bad and if you're looking to use a Steam Link, I think it's probably the best option for that. It won't collect dust on my desk, but it also probably won't be the first controller I go to grab either. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 05:29 AM PDT So I'm pricing out higher end PC builds and came across this article that kind of halted my shopping. https://www.techspot.com/news/75715-intel-core-i9-9900k-benchmarks-show-easily-outperforming.html I'm confused so asking here for community thoughts and experiences. Isn't an i9 suppose to be compared to say Threadripper? Why are they doing benchmark tests of the lower Ryzen CPU to i9? Or did I miss the memo and Threadripper is more inline with Xeons. I always thought EPYC were AMDs answer to Xeons. I would be okay if they compared an i7 to Ryzen but this seems a bit of a not in the same league comparison. Thanks in advance for all constructive feedback. [link] [comments]
My 2018 Coffee Lake Budget Build Complete! Posted: 30 Jul 2018 09:06 AM PDT First of all, a huge thanks to the r/buildapc community! This sub was a great reference for help and recommendations for getting my first build up and running! Here's all the components I used: partslist You can find my full description and some pictures of the build here: optimus18 Desperately needed an upgrade from a 7 year old XPS 8300. Everything went smoothly, I did get tad shaky when I installed the CPU, but after it was in place, installing everything else was a breeze! Cable management was the best I could get it especially for a non modular PSU. Zero issues with the first boot, everything is working perfect. This pentium g5400 packed a huge performance boost over my i3 2100! I'm now able to play most of my games at 60+ fps @1080p with high to ultra settings easily. I haven't noticed any drastic drops in frame rate either. I am planning to upgrade to an i5 8400 by the end of the year, but the g5400 was the best, cheapest upgrade option for now. Temps were amazing even after playing a few rounds of rocket league and killing floor 2. It only cost me about $250 to build thanks to having a few of the components & peripherals already, plus deal hunting during the July sales! A retail windows 10 pro key was also bought for me from my college upon graduation so that was even more saved! The experience of putting it all together was amazing and this will definitely be the first of many from me! [link] [comments]
Ryzen 2600 and 1060 3gb for streaming Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:44 PM PDT Is this a good configuration for streaming fortnite? I have a rx 580 8gb and ryzen 1600 and i am able to hover around 100-200 fps on all low. Is the 3gb variant of the 1060 a lot worse than the 6gb variant that I know is about equal with my current gpu? [link] [comments]
Is upgrading from 1050ti to a 1060 3gb worth it? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:17 AM PDT I can upgrade my 1050 ti to a 1060 3gb for $106 usd. Should I do it? [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:29 PM PDT Okay, I feel like I'm going crazy.
What else could I be screwing up? Edit: I should probably specify I bought this locally from a guy on r/hardware swap. I popped my 970 back in with all the same connections and that's still fine, so nothing is screwed up there. Edit: YES! It was a driver issue. Deleted everything and started from scratch and it worked great. Thanks to everyone who suggested this. [link] [comments]
Vertical GPU mount, Micro-ATX Case Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:21 PM PDT Do they make a vertical GPU mount for a micro atx case (NZXT H400i) that only use 4 slots? The only I have found requires 5 slots. In addition can a hybrid graphics card (EVGA FTW 1080 Hybrid) be mounted vertically? [link] [comments]
Did I put to weak of a cooler in my desktop? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:16 PM PDT I have a i7 8700k in my desktop I have 4 case fans on top of my master cooler hyper 212 evo I have had no problems so far with over heating but from what I have heard it seems like I should have but a higher grade cpu fan in my build so I guess what I'm asking is should I upgrade my cpu fan or will my current fan be ok [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:10 PM PDT Hey guys, as there is an insane heatwave in Germany, well insane for our measures at least, and i live directly under the roof without no isolation what so ever, i decided to invest some money to cool my system a little bit better. The first step for me was to order the Fractal Design Meshify C, as the current case i have is absolutely terrible for cooling as it kills pretty much any airflow. The Meshify C has the ability to mount a total of 6 fans (3x 120mm Front, 2x 120mm Top, 1x120/140mm) and obviously the mesh front, which will alow for increased airflow. Atleast i hope so. What i now am uncertain about is, if i should go with an AiO for CPU cooling or not. My budget is tight, as i have about 230€ for the case, which already cost me 90€, the CPU cooler and additional chassis cooling. I was looking at the Coolermaster Masterliquid 240 Lite, as i can get it super cheap for 50€ right now. I also was planning on replacing the fans of the ML240L with Corsair SP120's, as reviews criticized the noise coming from the stock fans. My question now is: With my budget and my goal being having the best cooling solution so that i eventually even could OC the FX-8350, what would be my best bet? System: MOBO: AsRock 990FX Extreme4 CPU: AMD FX-8350 @ 4.0GHz Current CPU Cooler: Zalman 9900 Max GPU: XFX HD7970 Double Dissipation GHz Edition PSU: XFX Pro 750w xxxedition 80+Bronze RAM: GeIL EVO Leggera DD3 1600MHz Thanks in advance boys [link] [comments]
Main monitor lags when using second monitor Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:42 PM PDT If I'm playing a game on my main monitor, and using my second monitor meanwhile, the game drops down to 10-15 fps. My main monitor is 144hz and second is 60hz. Both monitors is plugged into my graphics card. I've already tried turning off hardware acceleration in chrome, but that didn't work. I've tried playing in fullscreen and windowed, still no fix. I would appreciate any help. [link] [comments]
What monitor stand or monitor arm should I get for a triple monitor setup? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:51 PM PDT I have 2, 24" monitors and a 29" ultrawide. My set up right now is that the ultrawide is in the middle and the 2, 24" are on the side. Im thinking of getting a mount for the monitors so that i could get more desk space. Question is what kind of product would be able to fit an ultrawide in the middle plus 2 other monitors? Thank you! I live in Canada btw. I have a great SFF low budget build that's great for 4k video, web browsing, low graphics gaming and office stuff. Let me know what you think. Images Build Video r/https://youtu.be/w37AnZ1eZxE Parts
Pros 4k@60hz: Great for Youtube and Netflix 4k content Silent: No moving parts Small: 7.7 x 7.5 x 2.4 inches Low graphics gaming: Rocket League playable at low settings (30 to 45 fps); Cuphead 1080p consistent at around 60 fps; Emulators: Dreamcast and below worked fine. Some GameCube games Efficient: Idle around 9 watts, Full Load around 25 watts Inexpensive: Under $400 without Windows 10 Cons Thermal Throttling: Took approximately 1hr 10minutes to reach throttle point of 104. T junction temp is 105 for this CPU. Motherboard comes with Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework (Intel DPTF) drivers for better throttling performance. Mid-range Ryzen Gaming Build - Final Questions Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:24 PM PDT Budget: ~$1300 with monitor. Purpose: Competitive gaming (Dota 2, Fortnite, CS:GO, etc.) at 1080p 144hz and occasional streaming. I would also like to do some moderate overclocking since it doesn't seem too complex with today's components. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
Questions and concerns: 1. Everything but the RAM has been purchased and I am having trouble deciding between the below two kits:
Trident Z 16GB 3200 CL14 (F4-3200C14D-16GTZ) G.Skill - Flare X Series 16GB 3200 CL14 (F4-3200C14D-16GFX)
I know the G.Skill Flare X kit is qualified to run at 3200 out of the box but it is slightly more expense and I think the Trident Z just looks better in this motherboard. On the other hand, I have found many conflicting posts and threads about this Trident Z kit - some seem to have no trouble running it at 3200 and it is indeed listed on the Crosshair VI Hero QVL for Ryzen. Others seemed to have trouble with it but perhaps these were just old compatibility or BIOS update issues which have since been resolved? Edit: as I write this, I notice that the Trident Z is no longer in stock on Newegg for $205. Can I expect them to restock this at some point or should I just go for the Flare X? I'm not in a rush but would like to start building by the end of next month.
The Amazon listing as well as the packaging both say it is 144hz but I am reading the manufacturer's comments saying it is only 75hz.

Thankyou Everyone that helped! Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:11 PM PDT After 4-5 hours of the excited, fustrating, angering, almost CRYING process of building my pc, i am now talking to you guys from my first new pc! Thankyou to everyone who has helped me with questions and building help as i couldnt of done it without this amazing thread! What i learnt from my first time: - The AMD Spire cooler with 4 push pins is literraly the most hardest mf thing ever. litterally took me 30 mins just to apply it since the opposite side kept going up. - Check that all ur wires are connected properly. I spent 45 mins panaicing cause i was getting no signal to my monitor only to find out my pci-e power cable wasnt pushed in fully. Litterally this was almost such a troll cause i was gonna dismantle evreything. - Take your time, rushing things isnt the best way to do it. P.S. BTW i have a small problem. My front fan aint working (connected to a 2 head splitter conntecting my front and exhaust fan since i only have 1 chassis header. If anyone can give me a solution that will be great! Which combination of parts is better Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:45 PM PDT 2600x (stock cooler) + 1080 + good x470 mobo + good samsung 250gb ssd or 1600 + good noctua air cooler + 1080 ti + cheap b350 mobo + cheap inland 120GB SSD Both are about the same price, within a $30-$40 range. Right now I'm using a 1200p 60hz monitor but planning to upgrade to 4k 60hz in a few months (I play a lot of cinematic single player games) Any advice would be great, or perhaps a different combination at the same price [link] [comments]
Will microcenter be able to accept a return of my gpu and monitor? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:43 AM PDT I bought a gtx 1070 T.I from microcenter and a 1440p monitor, I've been having issues with each since I bought them, and I wanted to return them for a refund. their return policy says like new but then scroll down and it says must be in new condition. I purchased it on Friday and installed it that night and had issues with it all this weekend, and the performance isn't anything special compared to the 1060 I had before. The card had minor scratches on it when I pulled it out of the packaging, and I still have all the stuff that came with both. Is it returnable or no? Hard drive randomly fried after a year of use Posted: 30 Jul 2018 09:27 AM PDT How can I tell what could have caused this? I've been using this computer for a year (maybe a year and a half). We do have pets, so I'm leaning towards hair, but it seems random. I'm worried that if I get a new one, the PSU will fry that as well. I have a cx750m bronze+ psu connected to a 250gb Samsung ssd and a 1tb WD hdd. edit - Is there a way to test the PSU to make sure it's still good? [link] [comments] |
