    Simple Questions - July 29, 2018

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Affordable PC build for my parents

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 12:59 PM PDT

This build will mostly be used for light web browsing, playing music, and maybe some 1080p video. I want it to last them as long as possible and age gracefully. This is what I've come up with. I already have a copy of windows to install so I didn't include that in the build. My main concern is the possible required BIOS update with the newer AMD processor, how much of a problem is that these days? Additionally, I know the M.2 may be a bit overkill but I still feel like the benefits will be felt for the price difference? Same line of thinking for going with 3200 RAM. Thoughts and opinions?

Building a music production PC for a friend going through a hard time -- any comments/critiques?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 11:40 AM PDT

He's 15, and recently lost his sister unexpectedly in a car crash. Production is an outlet for him, but he's been stuck doing it on a ten year old iMac with 4GB of RAM. Despite this, he has undeniable talent, racking up 10k views on youtube with some of his songs, even though he can rarely play all his layers together before exporting. I have only ever built mining rigs, so I appreciate any critiques.

Letting him pick out the monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. I know the sound card isn't necessary, but it was cheap and might be useful in the future if he optimizes the build for gaming.

    First build complete!

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 02:13 PM PDT

After 9+ hours of building start to finish, it is finally done!

    Partslist

    Some (crappy quality) pictures

What a ride it was, a static discharge when unwrapping the case making me paranoid, wrestling with the motherboard and case and ripping off a USB 3 plastic cover thingie on the MB :)

The CPU cooler gave me the most trouble. This massive Le Grand Macho RT made it very difficult to place the motherboard properly in my case. And then came the time to plug in the CPU power connector on the motherboard... out came the motherboard again to be able to reach in there.

Still, quite satisfying to have everything working now and seeing the massive improvement relative to my old PC. Overwatch so smooth on 144 hz :)

I went through several iterations on buildapc and everyone has been really helpful, so thanks everyone!

Alright guys, I've finally finished my build after a whole bunch of help from everyone on this subreddit. I'm planning on buying the parts tomorrow if this thing doesn't get torn apart by the morning.

I have a budget of $2000 and am planning on using the PC for mostly gaming. I'd like to play games such as Nier: Automota (or however you spell it), Payday 2, Dark Souls 3, and GTA 5 and pretty high setting at at least 60fps. Please let me know what you guys think.

Should I buy a 1080ti right now or wait?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 02:17 PM PDT

So my situation is I have a shitty laptop right now. I'm building a pc soon but want to go high end. The thing is my current computer can't really run premier of after effects well at all. Also I need the computer by end of August. Should I get a cheaper video card then go for the new one when it drops? This is my first build and am extremely nervous not trying to buy a Gpu that will get out performed by the next gen when I just bought mine at equal price. Thank you all in advance. I have learned a lot just from te posts and information here.

Not sure if this is allowed here: What headphones are you guys using? Doing a research project.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 02:12 AM PDT

So I have a math project where I need to do 'market analysis' on a product I enjoy, and I'm really into audio (literally just remembered). We have to make graphs of that market analysis. I wanted to ask to general populous (instead of the niche /r/headphones), to get a sense of the budget and style of headphones that people in the PC gaming community are using. I will sort these by features (wireless, bluetooth, ANC, open/closed back, with an amp/dac, etc.), and make a graph. If you guys wanted to I could post it here if this gained enough traction. If there is another subreddit you guys would recommend more, please let me know, and I will repost this there. Thank you for reading and (hopefully) helping me complete this project!

An example: Corsair Void Pro 7.1 straight into my motherboard :) edit: this isn't my setup, you should check out my post history for some reviews of some cans that I own!

    First PC Build Advice

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 10:14 AM PDT

So I have never built a PC before but I wanted to get into PC gaming. My budget is a little under 2,000 and I have no idea what I'm doing. I'd like to be able to play games at 1440 with at least 60 FPS. Any advice on what I should do? Also I heard that new graphics cards might be coming out so I wasn't sure if I should wait and see if prices change.

Trouble with screws on my heat sink

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:45 PM PDT

So recently I took apart my PC to clean out some dust. I removed my heat sink to clean out some dust and applied some new thermal paste to my CPU. When I took my heat sink out, 2 screws weren't screwing on properly. I'm honestly scared to fuck something up and ruin my PC so I just put tightened the 2 screws that screwed on properly. (Everything is working fine so far) Luckily the 2 screws that work on are on opposite sides from each other and not on the same side, so the pressure on the cpu is somewhat even. Should I be worrying about this or is it not a big deal?

    Gaming / Virtualization Build

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:42 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I'm specing out a system build for myself that will be able to handle high end gaming, Photography editing, and running a home Virtual Hyper-V network.

I work in IT and my eventual goal is to become a Sysadmin somewhere, I also don't have a lot of room in my current living situation and so I want one system that will do everything I need it to do. Mainly gaming and Virtualization, with some photo editing. I already own an EVGA GTX 1060 and plan to reuse that part for this build.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    1920x1080, 60FPS, at max settings

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    ~$2000

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I feel like this would be a pretty solid build, the main part I am unsure about is the CPU, I've never built a system for the purposes for running VMs on it and wondering if the i7 8700k is good enough or if I should look into getting a Xeon instead, but I don't know much about the Xeon line or what process to pick from that at a comparable price to performance.

    Intel or AMD?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 08:22 AM PDT

I'm torn, I've always had an intel CPU. No reason in particular, just always ran intel. I'm doing a build revamp. New motherboard, cpu and gpu. Keeping RAM because I'm not spending those prices when I already have DDR4 2400, which works in new boards. My PSU is also brand new (month old). I'm considering getting a Radeon GPU regardless. I'm upgrading my monitor and like that freesync womt break the bank. Question is, should I go with the Ryzen 5 or the I5 8600k? Is it a weird switch going from intel to AMD?

New PC build with XFX Rx 580 gtr 8gb

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:46 PM PDT

No matter what drivers I install for the card I can browse around when the card is in 2d mode. As soon a I start games it does what it needs to do, but shortly after I start getting popping from the sound output and then the thing exits to desktop and hardlocks with a bsod of thread stuck in driver. I have tried it all to remedy the issue but nothing works. Uninstall, reinstall of drivers, resetting win 10, reseating of card. I saw briefly an article about the XFX rx580 gtr s from Best buy had this issue but can't find it anymore. Really want this card to work as I have it for sale and now have to remove it from hardwareswap.

    Which 27" monitor should I buy ? (1440p vs 2160p)

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 07:25 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

Iam considering upgrading my basic two 22" monitors setup (2x Asus TN 1080p) to a single 27" monitor (maybe i'll keep one of them as a secondary screen)

Iam hesitating between 1440p vs 2160p and TN vs IPS

I do mostly web development and design, the screen won't be used for gaming

It will plugged to my workstation (w/o GPU) or my rMPB

Actually, i short listed 4 Asus monitors that are available over here :

    - ASUS 27" - PB278QR (1440p IPS) [Specs]

    - ASUS 27" - Designo MZ27AQ (1440p IPS) [Specs]

    - ASUS 27" - PB277Q (1440p TN) [Specs]

    - ASUS 28" - PB287Q (UHD TN) [Specs]

If you had to choose between these monitors, what would you pick ?

    Thanks

    Paying for shipping

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:35 PM PDT

Just came here to say this but personally I think having to pay for shipping and provide a box for shipping items back for warranty is bullshit. If I receive a faulty product(In this case an Asus motherboard) I shouldn't have to pay more to return it for them to fix. I'd understand if they reimbursed it after so if hey found nothing at fault it wouldn't cost them anything but to make a customer pay is dumb. Also want to say Asus customer support might be some of the most unhelpful group of people ever.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I already had the same problem before (about two weeks ago, thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/8yipq4/first_build_not_going_very_well_restarts_every_30/). I figured it was because the motherboard BIOS wasn't updated to handle the new Ryzen 5 2400G CPU. I sent the motherboard back to the supplier to do a BIOS flash. This all happened without any problems.

I put the CPU in the motherboard, added the CPU fan. Connected the CPU fan. Added memory to the right slots. Connected a hard disk (SSD) and the PSU.

Connected a monitor via VGA and a wireless keyboard via USB 3.0.

When starting up the CPU fan starts spinning but there is no post to monitor. When I press keys on the keyboard, the light that indicates there are keys being pressed doesn't light up.

After 30 seconds the fan stops spinning and restarts after about half a second.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I already let my supplier do a motherboard flash update. I checked if there was enough thermal paste applied. It didn't cover the whole CPU, so I added some more, to no avail.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Here an album with some pictures: https://imgur.com/a/P8UKnWY

I can create extra pictures if needed.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

The keyboard and monitor work when connected to my laptop.

The cable providing electricity to my PSU doesn't fit completely in the CPU (see picture)

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm primarily having trouble deciding what video card to get. Should I upgrade to 1070 ti/1080/1080 ti or would that be overkill for what I need? If in the future I want to expand to more resource-demanding games, would the 1070 be sufficient?

I'd like to have my build be as quiet as possible, but I do care about looks. If anyone could recommend any solid blue/rgb fans as an upgrade to the stock fans, I'd appreciate it. I've been eye-ing the corsair air series sp120 and af140 as well as the nzxt aer rgb if anyone could vouch for or discredit these. (On the topic of RGB, I believe the RGB on pc parts are controlled through software after booting the pc? Do I need to purchase any additional hardware to customize the RGB?)

Otherwise, any suggestions to save money or reduce the noise of the build are welcome. Thanks.
