How to set up iptable to block everything but what is necessary Posted: 03 Jul 2018 04:59 AM PDT Hey y'all. First and foremost, thank you for being so helpful with my prior questions; I'm having a blastlearning Linux on my RPi. As it stands, I have a RPi that operates as a: 1) Pi-Hole (and DHCP server) 2) Plex Server 3) OpenVPN Server 4) TimeMachine I want this machine to be as locked down as possible while still permitting access to, for instance, SSH either while on the local network or connected to the local network via VPN. Further, I need Plex to work. I've read about fail2ban and ufw, etc, but I don't know where to start. Any suggestions? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Linux Switch - Should we take the leap now? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:16 AM PDT First let me apologize, I know there are a LOT of "Which distro should i use" questions out there but I need to ask this as its for 2 people and also i have a few extra "tag-along" questions. So I've been programming and doing 3D and music for a short while now, my girlfriend does 2D/3D art and some programming (primarily python). We both want to move to linux because of a few reasons. Firstly, we both have had install issues and resource usage issues on windows that we both think wouldn't be there on linux (windows bugs causing constant disk usage with no fix other than to format). We have a few questions and apprehensions though. Firstly, how well do programs run on wine? We use Zbrush, photoshop, krita, reaper, Houdini, for artwork and music, and collectively we use python, java, C++, and dabble in some other stuff. Given that some of these programs are quite "heavy" (zbrush and houdini mainly), would that be any problem? I know some stuff runs natively on linux but are there any "quirks" we should know about or does it all just run fine? Secondly, I've tried to read a lot about differences of distros but I just can't really see it. For example, I hear a lot of "this has X and Y preinstalled and this has Z" but we don't care about that, windows has virtual nothing useful installed and people still use that. We are totally happy with barebones and installing everything ourselves. We also hear about the environments being slightly different but to what extent? I saw something about one having a search bar quickly accessible but these type of things are negligent to us, 2 clicks instead of 5 for something we use maybe 10 times a day, is no big deal to us. So the question here is what are the REAL differences? are there big differences under the hood? (im sick of just seeing comparison screenshots of 2 different desktops, or seeing a single button thats there on one but not the other or something) Lastly, given those differences or lack of from question 2, Is there a real fuctional/"selling point" reason to choose one over another? we need both art and programming capabilities, but if we get an art focused distro of linux, and install atom, python, etc, or get a programming focused distro and install zbrush, etc, is there really going to be any sort of sacrifice made? Sorry for the noobishness, i know this is linux4noobs but i think I'm even lower than that right now haha. I guess its just because this is a big move for us as our work relies on this so we need as little interuption as possible. Gf's new HDD should be here in 2 days or so, so we have until then to make a decision. We will be testing with live USB but we also want you're input on this because, well, we can test all we want, but if a caveman is left alone to test a ferrari, he'd say its a nice bed. [RESOLVED] - After your responses, just the quality of the info (vs what i get when searching a windows issue), has made me want to switch. I wrote this expecting to find a distro, I haven't settled yet but You've all given me a huge boost of motivation to really start learning and experimenting, and a ton of "keywords" to start searching more about what i need. So thank you all for the great help! [link] [comments] |
ELI5: OpenGL vs Vulkan vs DXVK Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:54 AM PDT I've been using Linux exclusively for a while but I have a problem understanding concepts like these in details. I have a general idea what each if them mean, but not so entirely sure what is the uses and differences in each. I pretty sure DXVK is not related to the first two, but I have no idea how it works so I added it. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
I love Ubuntu Mate... so maybe it's time I looked at Mint Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:06 AM PDT Ubuntu Mate is it for me, Mate, and Mutiny are fantastic. The ability to get a desktop experience I love (Unity was so awesome) and can change dependent on task is so good. Recently I looked at Mint (The last time I used Mint was 2012ish?) and the allure of a system restore option has got me. I'm waiting on a new keyboard to arrive, and I'll be giving Mint a spin. Is there anything I should know when switching? Any gripes people have with Mint? [link] [comments] |

Firewalls. do you really need to block ports for services that are not running? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:58 AM PDT Been seeing several posts of late with people asking how to lock down 'everything', but allow specific services.. But isn't that how things sort of work by default. [link] [comments] |
windows missing from grub menu Posted: 03 Jul 2018 04:19 AM PDT hi, i have a windows-ubuntu dual boot machine and suddenly the windows partition disappeared from the grub menu. if i look for the partition on the file manager on linux everything is still there. but not in the boot menu. here is a photo i took. Edit: a simple sudo grub-reboot on Linux was enough. Thanks everybody. [link] [comments] |

How to boot from USB after linux has been installed Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:12 AM PDT Might seem like a weird question, but I want to change from Debian to Mint but can't boot from USB anymore. My system always boots into the GRUB boot loader no matter what the boot order is in BIOS, how can I stop this? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Best laptops for Linux (Not Thinkpad!) Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:06 AM PDT (By the way I'm asking here so I might get opinions from people with ACTUAL experience on not just some top 10 list full of ads linked from a Google search.) Hey, I imagine this has been asked a million times, sorry if it has. I've had the t420 recommended to me and am considering getting one but thought I'd ask if there are any other kinds of laptops that are just as good or better for Linux? As long as it can boot from USB it doesn't need a DVD drive although I'd happily take one with BR or DVD drive. I'm getting back into Linux because I really want to start learning about networking and security (I know quite a bit about programming in Windows and would like to take Python and C and C++ over to Linux with me and start some web based programming) and want to see if I can hack into my own home Windows systems. Right now I'm playing with Kali Linux on a VM on my desktop and really love it but would also like to be able to install a few different distros on the one laptop, hopefully Ubuntu, Kali, Solus and Fedora and then maybe a small Windows partition just in case. I don't really care about gaming or anything like that, I have a PC for that. But it'd have to be fast enough to do every day tasks, browsing, chat, wireless internet, listening to music, watching video without being frustratingly slow (I bought one of those hybrid laptop/tablets and it's so slow that it feels like I'm being mocked by it.) So what laptops are there that would happily support Kali and a few other distros out of the box without having to put a few hours into installing drivers? Thanks. Oh and my price range is between £0-£300. Sorry if this is the wrong sub. [link] [comments] |
Wy freaking wifi keeps disconnecting. Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:47 AM PDT Sorry for the f bomb. Heard somewhere that linux community helps with a lot of effort with wifi issues if F word is used. So here's the problem. I have a system I built using Intel pentium g4400 and gigabyte h110-d3a motherboard. I've installed ubuntu mate 16.04.3 on an SSD. In order to use wifi on it, I am using one netgear wifi dongle and one cheap china dongle. Both of them work fine on other devices but in this system, it'll detect all wifi networks, look like it is connecting and then show disconnected message. Sometimes it will connect but then randomly drop the connection. If there is a power cycle, it will not connect until the dongle is physically disconnected and reconnected. Is this a known issue with the default wifi handling software or am I doing something wrong? If you need any logs do let me know what command should I enter to help you help me debug this problem. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Linux program OS Compatability: Angstrom (embedded) and Ubuntu Posted: 03 Jul 2018 09:57 AM PDT Hello, I am pretty new to linux. I currently have some software/firmware that runs on a computer using linux angstrom. Would that software work on other versions of linux, like Ubuntu (not embedded) or would there have to be changes made to the programs/firmware (if it was using the same computer)? Fedora 24 - dracut-initqueue[510] Warning : [..] timeout Posted: 03 Jul 2018 09:48 AM PDT Hello there, first of all : This is the first time I "use" Linux. I want to install Fedora 24 on my Asus TP200S, and followed this instruction. I selected the USB drive, but now I'm stuck with this and some other messages : At this point I'm lost. Can anyone help? Can I use a timeshift backup to 'migrate' my os? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 01:53 AM PDT I tried using the dd command to migrate my os on a new ssd, however something went wrong and when i disconnect my old drive and start my computer, I can 'boot' into the os, but it is corrupt and I cannot use anything. Can I boot off of linux on a usb and use timeshift to copy my os onto the new drive? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2018 09:27 PM PDT Hey all, I was able to successfully install Elementary OS on my computer in its' own drive next to Windows 10 and everything seemed to be going fine. The last things I installed I think were drivers for AMD and Nvidia (I have a Ryzen 5 1600 CPU and Nvidia GTX 1060 GPU). Not sure if those are the problem, but now every time I boot up Linux or try to suspend it/put it in sleep, it'll freeze at the login screen and only the mouse can move around. I have to use CTRL+ALT+F1 to open the console and run "sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm restart" command every time so the login screen will unfreeze. What gives? I should also mention the computer does not suspend when I click suspend, it goes black and then just comes back to a frozen login screen. [link] [comments] |
Changing Boot Order with Linux (Ubuntu 18.04) and Windows 10 Posted: 02 Jul 2018 04:11 PM PDT Hey there! I have a laptop that came with windows 10 as the OS. I recently installed Ubuntu to an external hard drive so that way I can use both interfaces on my laptop. However, I can't seem to figure out how to change the booting order. I am currently in Legacy Mode on Windows and it automatically goes to Ubuntu if I don't hit F12 and switch the boot option manually to Windows. My question is how can I change the boot order to where windows 10 is the first option instead of Ubuntu? Also, if I change the order, would I have to be in legacy mode to manually tell my computer to boot Ubuntu? Note: I have tried using the Ubuntu terminal but Windows 10 doesn't show up as an option for boot settings? Not sure why. Thanks in advance. If you need more info to help me let me know! Help with Antergos installation. Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:13 AM PDT Hey guys. I was trying to install Antergos on a virtual machine and I don't know what to do about the /boot/efi partition. binary in PATH works only via prepending with nohup Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:33 AM PDT Hey, I'm confused, in order to get the latest youtube-dl version, I downloaded the binary from github, dumped it in /usr/local/bin/ and gave it the required permissions (basically did it the way youtube-dl recommends). /usr/local/bin/ is part of my path, but if I call it, it won't work or do anything. But if I call it via nohup it works perfectly: it downloads stuff, shows me the version etc. demonstrated here: https://pastebin.com/qKndqFVA OS: Debian 4.9 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2018 04:15 AM PDT I want to use some Android apps on Linux. I know there are some ways to do this, but none really worked for me. Does anyone have a good idea? I do not want to develop anything, just use apps on my PC. Using a VM or any other way... [link] [comments] |
Noob needs help with mozilla FF Posted: 02 Jul 2018 03:41 PM PDT Long-time windows power user, switched to linux around beginning of year, just about everything is ok, except this - I accidentally installed my FF folder to my desktop. Workspace. Whatever. (still working on comprehending the filesystem layout) It just worked, so I left it. But now, every time it updates I have to go through some rigamorole just to finish the update, or give up. Are my settings (like bookmarks) stored locally or via cloud? (which would allow me to just delete the old folder and put the new one someplace appropriate) Halp. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:02 AM PDT As mentioned, whenever I go into pulseaudio-equalizer-gtk and enable my chosen preset, nothing happens. If I quit then go back into it it says disabled. It has only started doing this today, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled pulseaudio and the equalizer. What can I do to start solving this? [link] [comments] |
