Suggest a laptop for college please

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:48 AM PDT

I don't want HP because there are bad reviews about costumer service. I wanted to try Acer, but the light ones have their touch pad behind the keyboard. Alienware is gaming oriented and too heavy and I don't play video games. XPS 15 keyboard is defective. I have been using a Mac but it's too slow now. I don't want another Mac because to use all of its features, I have to depend on icloud and their costumer service sucks big time and it has limited compatibility with non apple products. I want a fast one but I gave up on Dell XPS and Apple Mac. Any suggestions????

Is the XPS 15 9570 worth it?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:37 AM PDT

Im trying to find a laptop around the price range of the xps, and i can't find anything that is a smaller laptop like the xps in the same price range. But are the issues plaguing the xps a really big deal? I want to use it for everyday use and some light gaming. Is there any other laptop like the xps or any fixes to problems for the xps?

Oneplus Dash Charger with LG gram 13inch

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:04 AM PDT

This will be a stretch, but I was wondering if its possible to use any USB charger to charge a laptop (Specifically a LG gram13.3 inch)? I'm sorry I don't really understand electrics and power consumption. My oneplus Dash charger power supply takes 100-240v at 50-60hz and outputs 5v so about 4A. Is it possible to charge using this? Or is it too low output? And if I was to get a laptop charger rated for the laptop, can I use it to charge my phone?

[Discussion] I bought an HP Spectre x360 at the weekend, what do you guys think about them?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:12 AM PDT

I'm liking it so far! I'm upgrading from my very old and very faithful Lenovo Z570 (in bright blue). The spectre I have has an i7 8550U, 8GB of ram, 256GB SSD and the 13" 4K touch display complete with tilt pen.

I really like it so far, although I installed some windows updates which inexplicably took out my network drivers which required a roll back sigh.

I'm only going to be using it for uni work; word processing, programming, occasionally running a virtual machine and of course YouTube and some films. I've tried out all of those things on the laptop and it handles them fine! The battery life even with the 4K display seems to be around 8 hours, HP advertise 12 of course. But thanks to the thunderbolt (?) I think it gets 60% charge in like 50 minutes so that's perfect for university. I checked out a bunch of reviews online and for a thin and lite ultra book, the spectre seems to be a real contender among the XPS, Microsoft Surface book 2 and LG Gram.

Do any of you guys have any tips or common problems you've ran into?

Looking for a high end laptop for college

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:35 AM PDT

I have been looking at the dell XPS 15 and the Lenovo legion Y530 but am willing to spend more for something potentially better. I would love to play games but I'm worried about it being loud in class. Edit: I am majoring in software engineering.

Would like to know if this Acer laptop is any good.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 01:07 PM PDT

Hey, so I'm a soon to be university student and as is every, I'm looking for a laptop.

Now I'm thinking of dual booting windows and Linux, so I would prefer both CPU and GPU from AMD. I've looked thorough the wiki and there's some good options, sadly, I can't find them to buy in UK, so yes, I'm looking to buy in UK.

I've found a pretty good contender, but one problem is that it only has a 256gb ssd, so a bit of shortage of storage.

My budget is up to 1000 euro/pounds. The mentioned laptop link is at the bottom.

How can I test a used laptop

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:57 AM PDT

So I bought a used xps 13 from Amazon warehouse deals and saved £400 off the new price. It arrived today and everything looks in perfect condition, at least on the outside.

How can I test all of the internals to make sure that nothing is faulty? Is there anything in particular that I should look out for?

Looking for a daily driver laptop

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:00 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

I have been researching laptops for weeks. I am in the process of going remote with my job, so I will need a performance laptop I can use for video conferences, full-time work, productivity, light video editing, and some minor gaming on the side. I have been looking at the Dell XPS line (both versions of 15 inch 9570 & 9575 the 2-in-1). Although, I have heard numerous things about the XPS having driver issues and with the webcam having such an odd viewing angle, I am not sure if it is the right choice for me. Other than that, I love the look and specs of the XPS line. I have also looked into the HP Specre x360, and while this has the same specs as the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 I am not sure if I want to go with it or not.

Specifically, I am looking for a laptop with a new 8th gen intel i7. Doesn't matter if its the G or H coffee / kaby versions. I would like 16gb of RAM, and some kind of dedicated graphics (Nvidia 1050Ti level) so I can do some minor gaming (I'd like to play fortnite and fallout 76 once it comes out).

My price range is under 2k usd. I wanted something under 1700 but I am willing to go a little higher if I have the right specs. I want a touchscreen if possible. I have looked into the Razer Blade 15 but that does not come with a touchscreen unless I wait for the 4K version. I don't necessarily want a 4k display, due to the drain on the battery.

I have looked at the Surfacebook 2, and it does look good, but it's just a little more than I am willing to pay (as most others might agree). I've checked out the lenovo X1 Yoga, but it comes out even more expensive than the Dell XPS.

Maybe I am just picking apart the XPS too much. This is a big purchase and will need my machine to work to my standards since it will essentially be the single tool I am using for work. I am just asking for some perspective and knowledge. Do any of you work from home with a laptop? Any one really like the new 8th gen processors? I can't seem to make up my mind when it comes to picking the laptop that's right for me.

    Thanks for the help everyone!

Adding more storage to my laptop

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 09:24 AM PDT

Hi, I have an HP Pavillion Power Laptop 15-cb0xx. I currently have a 256 GB SSD, however it's running out of space (video games). I was wondering if it is possible to add another storage hard drive? I was thinking of adding an HDD so I could have the speed of the SSD and the storage of the HDD. Would this be possible, how would I do it and how much would it cost. If not possible, some alternatives would be great.

    Thank you!

Debating an X1 Yoga or a Surface Book 2

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:59 AM PDT

First years grad student in anthropology looking for a good 2-in-1. I considered a MacBook Pro a while, but it doesn't have a touchscreen for the amount of money you spend on it.

I'm debating an X1 Yoga or a Surface Book 2. But if you have better suggestions I'm open.

Best Buy has a deal for the Surface Book 2 for $2150 for the 8th gen i7, 16gb RAM. And 512 gb hard drive.

Would it be overkill for me? I'm not a graphic artist. Writing and research is more my area.

    High gaming thermals

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:32 AM PDT

I've been Overwatch recently on my Yoga 720 and the CPU thermals reach 95° at times when playing 1080p at High settings. Is this normal? How long should I play at these temps? I tried cleaning out the fans from outside using compressed air, and undervolting. But the thermals still seem too high. I even tried playing in 'Presentation Mode,' where the fan inlets are on top and the outlet on front (like so). What else can I do to reduce temperatures?

Is my laptop safe with no ac?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 10:42 PM PDT

    Hello!

I'm now renting at a place where I'm not allowed to have the air conditioning on while I'm out of the house. The temperature is regularly going to hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit and is going up to 104 this weekend.

I'm wondering: is my laptop safe if left on my desk while I'm away or will the heat damage it?

Basically is a laptop safe at 90-110 degrees if switched off?

    Thank you for your help!

    Middle-tier gaming laptop for GF

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 10:08 PM PDT

Hey all, gonna try one more time, since I didn't get many responses last time. Previous post contains the questionnaire, you can find it on my user profile a few posts back.

GF has never had a good laptop or PC, and we just started playing WoW together. The gaming in question would be along the lines of WoW or less. Would also be her daily use for school, netflix, etc.

Budget is along the lines $1250 US. But I have looked in that market within ~$250 more or less.

Current considerations are (not bound to these, but just to get an idea):

    • MSI GP63 Leopard-013
    • Dell G7
    • Similar line Asus ROG

Would prefer at least GTX 1060, (128 or 256 GB) SSD + 1TB HDD.

    Please help!

edit: 3rd try. Tried posting with links to the laptops I'm considering, as well as to my previous post. Had to remove.

edit 2: Also just saw a pricedrop post for the Acer Predator Helios 300, which looks good and is at $1200 on Amazon. However, it doesnt seem to have any storage other than the 256 GB SSD

    Processor Under-clocked?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:36 AM PDT

I recently purchased an Acer Swift 3 14' with an Intel i5-8250u Quad Core. On Intel's website it says that this model is clocked at 1.6 GHz with a max turbo of 3.40 Ghz. However on my system info it seems to be clocked at 1.6 Ghz but with a turbo of only 1.8Ghz. Is there a mistake somewhere or is this normal on a laptop?

College Student looking for a midrange laptop

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 06:39 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 - $1150, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications. I don't have any interest in 2-in-1

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important. My daily commutes are pretty short, so bulk isn't a huge issue for me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming, mostly in C++ for the upcoming year. I'd also like to do some light gaming, but I'm not much of a stickler for framerate or visual quality, so I'm willing to sacrifice gaming performance if other features will be better by comparison (e.g. 30 fps on medium settings is fine for medium/high resource-intensive games).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I have a console for most AAA releases, so I'll be using my laptop for mostly indie games and lighter competitive/multiplayer games like League of Legends.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • A good keyboard

    • Decent/Good color-accuracy, if possible

    • Good speakers

    • Think bezels are preferable, but it isn't a deal-breaker if it doesn't have them

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was initially interested in the Dell G7 15, but I wasn't a huge fan of its keyboard, the blue backlighting, or its general design. I'd prefer a laptop that doesn't have a "gamer" aesthetic, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to avoid that at my prince range with my desired specifications. I've started looking into the Lenovo Legion Y530 (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-legion-y530-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-ti-1tb-hard-drive-black/6219200.p?skuId=6219200), but I'm a bit weary, since it lacks a proper SSD and won't be released for another week.

    Thanks for the advice!

    Upgrade Working 5 y/o laptop?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 11:21 PM PDT

I have a Lenovo y580 that's still working as well as the day I got. At the moment it has a 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, and the original disc drive. I am trying to decide if it would be worth spending 200 - 300 on some upgrades. The upgrades would be 16GB RAM, Kingston 120GB mSATA SSD and possibly getting a 1TB 2.5" HDD if the 750GB one the laptop came with is still working (last time I checked 2 years ago it was).

The RAM upgrade is for more Chrome tabs and for programs like photoshop since I content create in my spare time (digital illustration). The mSata would either act as my boot drive or a cache to speed up content creation software. The HDD is to free up about 80GB of files I don't access very often and would replace the CD drive (Don't really use it often either).

I don't NEED the upgrades, but would be cheaper than buying a new computer/laptop since I have it connected to a USB hub and 2 monitors like a makeshift desktop computer. However, either this year or next I may be getting a laptop or building myself a new computer depending on school needs.

Liquid Metal for MSI GS65 question

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 06:11 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm personally considering the GS65 heavily, and am comfortable with repasting it even with the flipped Mobo. I found a video of a guy applying liquid metal to both the CPU and GPU, and he also covered the nearby contacts with nonconductive nail polish. I understand why he did so, but this would(everything else aside), almost definitely be a problem in the case of a warrenty claim correct? I was thinking of just using Kryonaut instead since I don't have to worry about conductivity with it.

Laptop Question - Single vs Dual Channel RAM

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:00 PM PDT

Hello. I am not well-versed with the ins and outs of the working of computers, and wanted to ask a question regarding RAM. I am looking to get a new laptop, and am deciding between the 8th gen MSI GS63 and the ASUS GU501. Currently, I am leaning more towards the ASUS. However, when I was reading the laptop's specifications, I learned that the ASUS has one single 16 GB stick of 2666 MHz RAM, while the MSI has 2x8 GB sticks of 2400 MHz. I know that dual channel is better than single channel, but not how much better. How much of a difference will these two model's performance have due to the ram (the dual-channel MSI and single channel ASUS)? If it's a large difference I'll probably go with the MSI. They both have a full (not max-q) 1060 and an i7-8750H processor. Thanks!

Side Note: In case this information is important to the discussion, I am going to be using whichever laptop I pick for everyday use, school (engineering student, use CAD and GIS programs), and moderate gaming (I love RPGs so I will be playing more demanding stuff like the Witcher 3 and upcoming RPGs).
