    Recertified open box

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:51 PM PDT

Anyone have any experience buying Best Buy recertified open box? Ive been looking at a dell xps 15 that is sold and shipped by a company named DCR who I've never heard of and found no information about. Under description it claims to still have the 1 year warranty but still seems a bit weird to me. https://m.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/dell-xps-15-9570-15-fhd-nvidia-1050ti-intel-i7-8750h-16gb-ram-512gb-ssd-win-10-home-recertified-open-box/12741781

Does Lenovo usually have back-to-school sales?

I'm gonna buy a Lenovo thinkpad E480 for college in the fall. I heard it's best to wait until August because most places have back to school sales. I'm gonna buy it directly from Lenovo's website, should I wait a week or two and see if anything comes up?

    Convincing parents

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:10 PM PDT

Not totally sure I should ask this her but whatevs. I have my own credit card and all that jazz and I was wanting to go into high school with a new laptop for myself. My family has a laptop for all of us to use but I wanted one that I can customize and install my own programs on to use for myself. By programs I mean photo/video editors, Microsoft things and some others. The thing is my parents say I don't need one when we have the family one. I was wondering if anyone can help me find other reasons than I need it for school and such. Thanks.

    Help buying a laptop.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 06:35 AM PDT

I am looking for a laptop for school as my current one broke down, I have no experience whatsoever with laptops and my budget is roughly 500€. I don't need any good specs or anything like that, the computer should just run nicely and should be easy to carry and shit.

P.S. Not looking to buy a Mac.

Thanks for any answers, sorry if it's an unappreciated question.

    Laptop for Medical school

Im looking at the Surface Book 2 and Lenovo Yoga 920. Mainly these are high on my list for portability and power. Slightly leaning towards the surface book due to the extra GPU when connected to the keyboard. If anyone else has suggestions I'd love to hear them!

I want a Xiaomi mi pro, but I really shouldn’t

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 10:55 AM PDT

I need a laptop for school that starts in September, I am going to sell my workstation of four years and completely switch over to using a laptop.

I only really use my computer for programming, and the occasional game of CS with my friends when I am bored.

My needs : I will probably be ok with 256gb of storage, but I'll need it to be m.2 Definitely a I7 16 gig of ram. 13"-15" 1080p is good enough for me. Be around £1000 A DGPU would be nice And finally It needs to be well built

I have read and watched some reviews on the Xiaomi mi pro and it seems to be a perfect match for me.

But I have also read that it comes with no support what so ever and they are fairly prone to failure, which scares me a little.

I wouldn't say I'm careless with my stuff, I have had a iPhone 7 since it came out and I use it without a case or screen protector and there is not a scratch on it.

But I would still like for it to have at least a little bit of support.

I have read that the Huawei matebook x pro is really good also, I prefer the xiaomi over it though.

Are there any other laptops around that price that I should consider? Thanks.

I have a Latitude E6540 and I want to buy 16gb of ram I Was Wondering If Anyone Could Help Me?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 10:13 AM PDT

The official dell latitude memory compatibility website lists the latitude e6540 as using ddr3l low voltage memory with 1600mhz. Does that mean I can just pick up any standard 2 sticks of 8gb ram of ddr3l 1600mhz and plop it into both slots and it would work and recognize it? and if I answered my own question sorry I just don't want to spend $100 bucks to get a dud.

    Going FULL LAPTOP?!

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 10:01 AM PDT

But linksalu, you're never supposed to go full laptop!

Alright, so I'm a PC gamer. I'm rocking an older desktop system right now, but hey, it handles R6 Siege, PUBG, and The Witcher 3 just fine, so I haven't felt a pressing need to upgrade...until now ;)

My current desktop specs: i5-3550, Geforce 960.

The thing is, I've recently started traveling a lot, bouncing around from country to country for roughly half the year before heading back home to save up for the next round. During these periods of travel, I'm hauling around an older HP Envy with an i7-4722HQ and a GeForce 950M. I'm only able to play emulator games and less intensive stuff on this thing, like Pillars of Eternity.

Then I saw this Linus Tech Tips video and wondered if I could have my cake and eat it too:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rjty3I3Cdg8

    1. Has anyone experimented with COMPLETELY replacing their desktop system with a laptop that plugs into an eGPU, cooling pad, external monitor, and external keyboard while at home?
    2. If so, what has your experience been like?
    3. Assuming I replace my current Envy with something that has an i7-8750 (Dell G7 15, I'm looking at you), can I expect to vastly outperform my current desktop?
    4. Is an eGPU enclosure using Thunderbolt 3 better than this m2 cable thing?

The idea would be to use this laptop as a desktop for half the year, then use the laptop as an actual mobile device the other half, while traveling.

    5) Can I expect to keep this laptop for 3 or 4 years, with the only substantial upgrades arriving via newer GPUs in the eGPU enclosure?

    6) Will I murder my laptop if I'm using it for the majority of the day, every day, the way I do my desktop? I've always been under the impression that the failure rate on laptops are way higher than desktops.

As somebody who has never gone full laptop, I'd love to hear from the community. Thanks!

Acer Aspire 5 or Acer Aspire 7

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 09:31 AM PDT

Hello! I want to buy laptop mainly for Photoshop and gaming sometimes. I can't decide which is better: Acer Aspire 7 (without SSD) or Acer Aspire 5 (with 120 GB SSD).

Is the difference in performance very big?

    Acer Aspire 7 (without SSD):

    • Intel Core i5-7300HQ 2.50GHz/3.50GHz
    • 8GB DDR4
    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050, DDR5 - 2GB
    • 1 TB HDD SATA 5400

Acer Aspire 5 (with 120 GB SSD):

    • Intel Core i5-8250U (1.60/3.40 GHz, 6 M)
    • NVIDIA MX150 2 GB GDDR5
    • 8GB DDR4 2133MHz
    • 1TB SATA 5400rpm
    • 120 GB SSD

    1080p 144hz IPS vs 4k 60hz IPS

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 11:52 PM PDT

I know there has been countless threads on this subject, but my question is a bit different. I am planning to do some light CAD, among other things such as watching videos and browsing the internet on my laptop, and also game on the side. I have the choice between 2 identical laptops, the only difference being the display. I'm wondering which one of these would be the best solution. If the 4k display is chosen, I would still play games in 1080p, but use the 4k for everything else. I've been told that the difference between 144hz and 60hz is night and day, but 4k destroys 1080p in terms of CAD. The laptop I will be using has an i7 8750h, GTX 1060 6gb Max-Q, 16gb DDR4 2666mhz RAM, and a 256gb SSD, if that helps. I will be doing things like watching YouTube and browsing the internet, as well as using Fusion 360 and playing most modern titles like Overwatch, Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege, etc. Thanks for any help!

Laptop with 4k screen bad for gaming?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 08:17 AM PDT

    Hey all!

I planning on buying this laptop second hand: Asus Gaming Notebook G501JW-FL398T.

I was very hyped but the 4k resolution isn't necessary. I heard from friends that the 4k screen could cause low FPS when gaming... is this true? Wouldn't I just be able to change the resolution? I can get this laptop second hand, almost new, for 700 euros. Any advice would be apreciated :)

(The main game I play is Guild Wars 2 if that helps)

Thanks in advance for any help!

A laptop for music production, mixing, mastering and maybe a bit of fun

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 07:07 AM PDT

Hey all! My Dell XPS 9530 (i7 4712HQ, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD, etc) is dead. Rest in peace, my old battered and bruised friend. You know what that means... a new laptop! Yey!

I need it for music production, mixing (both studio and live), mastering and maybe... a bit of fun.

    Here's my criteria:

    1. 8 Gen Intel i7 6-core CPU (because more cores is the new sexy). Preferably one that doesn't throttle... though in this day of age or seems to be the norm for thin laptops
    2. Thunderbolt 3 (future proofing myself in regards to future audio interfaces, and maybe even an external GPU at some point - not to mention a hub for even more I/O - speaking of which...
    3. Enough I/O to shake a stick at - i.e min 4 USB (3.1 Gen 1 & 2)
    4. Not that heavy (maximum 3kg-ish, including charger - I got plenty other equipment to carry and a back to take care of)
    5. Upgradable - no soldered memory or storage
    6. Not that ugly. I have to be around pretentious MacBook users.
    7. stable performance and preferably low noise emissions (while using CPU to the max - the GPU is not necessary when working with music)
    8. A good screen for graphics and video editing - though it's a lower priority
    9. HDD, though again: it's the age of the dongle. I can suffer having to plug another peripheral in the computer - hence the I/O requirements
    10. Gaming perhaps? I like games... but this is a low priority, so we put this at the bottom

    Here's my list of candidates:

    1. Razer Blade 15 - yeah, I said it. Not that heavy, good CPU, good GPU, great keyboard and a nice big trackpad (not to mention it looks finer than hell!) (excluded by the pc masters on the discord server)
    2. MSI GS73 Stealth (IF the European warranty is not void if I upgrade it successfully - i.e no damage after having taken out and put back in the ENTIRE FRIGGIN MOTHERBOARD) (excluded by the pc masters on the discord server)
    3. HP ZBook G5 because it's Pro grade, solid engineering, a little bit underpowered in comparison to gaming laptops, but it is a work horse. Also, I am dumb. Shout out to mgsv on the discord server for setting me straight.
    4. ASUS Zephyrus M GM501 it seems to hit almost all the sweet spots... but goddamn, those bezels (it's 2018 damnit). Not sure about the keyboard and trackpad)
    5. MSI GS65 because MSI seems to be hitting it out the park lately. But I read it also throttles CPU performance... which means skipping sound. In a live context that's just plain embarrassing... It looks sleek though. (excluded by the pc masters on the discord server)
    6. <Your suggestion here> did I miss anything?

Note that I've excluded both the new Dell XPS and the Asus Zenbook Pro. They're both gorgeous laptops, but soldered memory is unacceptable and I've grown weary of Dell as a company. The laptops also have to be available in Nordic countries - Norway to be specific - so no MSI Aero 15X for me =( I went for thin and light gaming laptops for a nice balance of performance and portability.

I want to make a solid investment as it has to be a powerhouse and last me a fair bit of time. I'm keen on hearing people experiences with these laptops. Feel free to challenge my criteria and choice of laptops.

"Why no Workstation laptops", you may ask. The HP Zbook G5 for instance is probably a good contender, especially with it's robust military compliant design and Windows Pro Workstation (does the added performance profile that removes micro-latencies really make a difference in real-time audio?) I've chosen to exclude these as form factor (I've got a lot of equipment to stuff to cram in the same over sized backpack) and weight come into play.. and I'd much rather prefer a GTX over a Quadro. Not to mention that workstation laptops... are kinda ugly by default. Again: if that's dumb and I'm dumb feel free to let me know.

"Why not a MacBook? It's the choice laptop for music production!" I don't like Dell. You think I like Apple even more? CoreAudio is nice, but NO SOLDERED MEMORY OR STORAGE goddamnit.

Help me, r/laptops. You're my only hope. I'm an indecisive bastard and don't want to suffer buyer's remorse (though it's unavoidable that I won't be at least a little bit disappointed).

    Thanks for reading my novel!

    Overclock a max-Q dGPU to normal levels? (T480s MX150 vs. T480 MX150)

    Posted: 29 Jul 2018 06:18 AM PDT

I've googled around and I understand that in general, it's a bad idea to OC on a laptop since the cooling solution will not be good enough in the ultrabooks that have the max Q version in the first place, but T480s vs T480 seem like an exception to this.

It seems like the T480s got the max Q version only because of the shorter battery life compared to the T480 as the cooling between both are identical. In some cases the T480s actually has better cooling and performance compared to the T480 which comes with a single heatpipe if it's not configured with a dGPU. Unfortunately, no one seems to have tried it before on the T480s (mainly searched around /r/thinkpad) and the max-Q MX150 is what's making me hesistate on getting a T480s (vs. getting a T480 or an X1C6) in the first place.

I'm tempted to risk it anyways and go ahead with a T480s order (33% off EPP), I assume I would try it with something like MSI afterburner or Throttle stop after repasting. Does this sound plausible?
