    1. Does the Acer Nitro 5 still suffer from overheating problems? Or did Acer fix this in newer models (AN515-52)?
    2. Would the Nitro 5 still be a good buy even with its heat issues?
    3. Of the 2 models listed below, which one will run the coolest?

    Both are 999€:

    Laptop for college/gaming

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 01:35 PM PDT

So I am interested in buying a laptop that is capable for lower end gaming, and that will last for a couple years. A laptop that I would be able to upgrade at a later date. Trying to avoid chromebooks. Looking to spend less than $500. I also know very little about GPU's and hard drives and what they do. I'm not technologically advanced, contrary to what my mother thinks. Thank you for bearing with me through my mess of a post!

    Hey all,

I am interested in buying the Asus UX331UN but I have not seen the slate grey version come available yet. Been holding off as I do not want the blue one, but I still don't see slate grey as an option anywhere (even on Asus's own site). It stats slate grey is an option in the description.

Anyone know whats up with this or where I can find it in Slate Grey?

EDIT: I am in the US btw

New Dell XPS 15 for Unreal Engine 4?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 12:46 AM PDT

Hello, I already own a powerful desktop PC, but now I'm searching a laptop to work on game development on the go (Game jams, travels), and I'm in love with the new Dell XPS 15.

The problem is that I'm seeing a lot of problems about throttling, and lets be honest, Unreal 4 is a pretty demanding engine.

Anyone have experience with unreal 4 on a laptop (preferably XPS 15) and can give me his/her opinion?

    Thank you.

    2. Is the upgrade to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 10 s still free?

    Lenovo 530s Fan Noise

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:34 AM PDT

I recently bought a Lenovo Ideapad 530s. It's great, except the fan is noisy and cycles on and off instead of being at a constant low volume.

I've already undervolted to the max that doesn't crash while running Prime95 overnight, switched from active to passive performance, reduced max CPU usage to 99%, looked in BIOS for fan control (there isn't an option for that), and tried SpeedFan and Notebook Fan Control, but nothing's working. The CPU is at a reasonable 46-48 C and the chassis is cool to the touch, but the fan can get annoying and legitimately hurt my ears. Aside from opening the laptop up and applying new thermal paste, is there something I'm missing or am I stuck with this fan?

Better of the two laptops and why

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:00 AM PDT

I'm in Australia and want a 2 in 1 primarily for notetaking and gaming and there are two laptops that I was looking at the Yoga 720 with GTX 1050 (4 gb) and i7 7700HQ, and the Spectre x360 with AMD RADEON VEGA graphics and i7 8750G. Both have a 256gb ssd and 16 gb ram [the one's I'm looking at]). The price points are fairly similar (on ebay) and I'm leaning toward the Spectre due to the (subjectively, at least) nicer design and better ports though it is ~$2600 compared to ~$2300 for the Yoga.

The Spectre has better i/o for my needs but I was worried that the touchscreen had poor palm rejection and that the writing experience with the pen would be better on the Yoga. The Spectre, as it ships from a different country, will take longer to get to me (2-3 weeks compared to 2-3 days). The Spectre also has a numpad which is useful but far from essential for me.

From where I've looked, the Yoga is typically a lot cheaper here compared to the Spectre but I'm far from an expert on computer hardware and reasons for pricing. I haven't had much luck getting a good answer and would love to get some advice on which is most suitable for the following:
    - Gaming (light gaming with titles such as overwatch and battlefield 1 with fps of 40-60)
    - Notetaking with reasonable palm rejection

Grad student looking for very portable, lightweight solution: go with laptop or 2 in 1?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 06:38 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I would say $700 max. I realize this limits options but I will be waiting for a sale to buy so perhaps something may slide under. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is fairly important and 2 in 1 seems like it would be nice but it's not a must. Re specifications, it just has to have enough RAM to accommodate running Word, Excel, Spotify, and multiple Firefox tabs at the same time without getting slow/chugging, so I think 8 GB is the way.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. I will be carrying it around for upwards of 3 miles walking a day along with multiple books, and likely biking with it as well. Needs to be sturdy enough for constant transport, though.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12-14".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No. I already have a dedicated gaming laptop for this.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard/touchpad very important, helpful to have good build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been really on the fence over getting a full laptop like the Surface or going for a 2 in 1 like the Surface Pro or Samsung Galaxy Book. I really need this thing to be very portable and the tablet format could be nice for reading/highlighting articles/PDFs - but I will be doing a LOT, A LOT of typing and writing and the keyboard needs to facilitate that. Anybody who wants to weigh in would be appreciated. The Huawei Matebook is too big and heavy I think. The HP Spectre 13 also looks good but it's too expensive. Perhaps the Microsoft Surface or Surface Pro?

Edit: To preempt any Surface Go suggestions, I am very dubious about typing for long periods of time on that little keyboard without my hands cramping up.

[Question] RAM upgradability in HP Spectre x360 15’’ with i7-8705G CPU + Vega GPU

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:52 AM PDT

Hello all, I hope this is an okay subreddit to post this in (I tried to post in r/techsupport but the post never showed up?). I've searched high and low and I'm pretty much at a dead-end with my own resources and knowledge.

I'm really interested in getting the laptop mentioned in the title but I'm trying to do my due diligence in research before I purchase. I'm looking at equipping this model with 16GB (2x8GB) of RAM and 1TB of SSD. However, I imagine that after a couple of years, I'm going to want to upgrade the RAM to 32GB on my own (and maybe the SSD too if possible, but I can live without that if the SSD is soldered in). I don't think I could really get much benefit from 32GB now, but in a few years, I think it could really matter for what I do.

To be clear, I want 16GB of RAM now with the option to do the upgrade to 32GB later on by myself; I don't want to buy a device with 32GB now. Succinctly asked: Is it possible for the user to upgrade from 16GB to 32GB RAM on the HP Spectre x360 15'' model with i7-8705G CPU + Vega GPU? For your reference if its helpful, I believe that variations of this model with the 8705G+Vega combo carry this product name designation: 15-chXXXxx (or possibly in this other format: 2KD76AV).

Skip to the TL;DR at the bottom if you have the answers already and you think you want to skip all the research I've already done!

In trying to research wether that is possible on this model or not, I can't find seem to find a consensus about the RAM upgradability of this unit. There's a lot of vague (and some conflicting) info out there:

    • Firstly, HP will only equip the machine up to 16GB. It seems to not be soldered, which is a positive. But going further with HP, their own technical docs don't mention if 32GB would work, only stating the possible configurations they ship with. Going even further, I spoke to 3 different people across three different departments and they could not confirm that upgrading it to 2x16GB would work or would not work, even with the information I provided about the chip (see next item).

    • Secondly, in looking up the specifications of the CPU from Intel's website, it would appear that the CPU supports up to 64GB of RAM, which is another positive. However, I'm uncertain if there are other specifics about the build/internals of the HP Spectre x360 15'' with this chip that might prevent it from accepting 32GB of RAM (or phrased more broadly, I'm uncertain in general about a chip's advertised max memory and if there are reasons why some laptops might support or not support the max, or at least be able upgrade within its bounds).

    • Thirdly, in looking at Crucial.com (which I've worked with a few times before and trust) and trying to look up devices yields negative results: none of the RAM upgrade packages for models with the 15-chXXXxx designation are 2x16GB, with Crucial only giving various 2x8GB kits as their highest offering... however, in looking at Kingston.com and looking at their offerings for model 15-ch011dx, they state that the maximum memory is 32GB (conflicting Intel's own information about the chip) and they do in fact offer a 16GB modules.

    • Fourthly, you can find various websites that offer upgrades to standard manufactures' products, and this model is no exception. As an example, Computer Upgrade King offers customization up to 32GB of RAM for this specific model, which would appear to be another positive for RAM upgradability. However, they don't give a technical name for the product in the chXXXxxx form, instead giving the code "2KD76AV". In using this code on HP's Support it leads me to a page that give the designation "15t-ch000 CTO" which may perhaps just be the nomenclature for the base product of these models. Using Shopineer.com to find postings of other x360s with 32GB leads me to companies such Eluktronics and Xotic PCs, but they have proved useless in my quest for the specific model identification name(s)/number(s) that they perform these upgrades on.

    TL;DR

    • (1) Does anyone have one of these machines that they've done the upgrade to 32GB themselves? Some first hand testimony would be great. If it was successful, can you supply me with some specific model name/number?
    • (2) If the i7-8705G accepts up to 64GB of RAM, as per Intel's website, is there any reason why upgrading to 32GB wouldn't work in the Spectre x360s with this chip?
    • (3) Can anyone reconcile the difference between what Crucial states about RAM upgradability vs what Kingston states for this unit? Are there other websites similar to Crucial I could look for compatibility information?

While it might be tempting to look at the Computer Upgrade King offering as mentioned above (especially considering the information about the chip and what Kingston says about the 32GB max) and just say to one's self "oh yeah, I'll be able to plug 32GB in any of those models no problem!", Crucial not having a 2x16GB kit for this model is troublesome to me since I've worked with them a few times and trust them.

I just want to be absolutely certain, or as damn close as I can get, that this will work (and I don't feel I'm close enough to 100% certainty yet, hence me reaching out here). If I should post this in another subreddit, let me know.

    Thanks for your time!

Is the keyboard on the Asus FX53VD-RH71 really that flimsy?

    According to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzvvK_4r3sY

The keyboard shown in the video seems very flimsy to me, and he even said it was flimsy himself. But I found a sale for this computer at a really good price, so I am tempted to purchase this laptop. Does anyone have any experience about this laptop and especially its keyboard? No other site I've seen mentioned anything about it's keyboard so maybe it is just him? I thank you in advance for your help!

    Long post, need recommendations

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 08:52 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Honestly flexible, but less than $3000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life and decent performance

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? * Not too much more thicker than an Ethernet port, at most. Weight doesn't matter just as long as it's easy to hold, and is worth the weight.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, with good/decent Linux support

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15", as you can't really get something good at a 13" laptop, and only a few at 14". But if there are good options that are smaller, I'd like to know. If it is a weaker laptop, then it should preferably be smaller. I also really don't want something with a screen higher than 1440p, unless it still has good battery.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I use DaVinci Resolve quite a bit, and play mostly lighter games/at lesser settings, such as esports/older games mostly, like Skyrim, CS:GO, Quake Live and I'm looking into getting Overwatch. Medium at 60+ fps is enough for me.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Explained above

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard for sure.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Hey, I use a base model 2015 15" Macbook Pro and I'm looking for a replacement for college. I got my Macbook Pro for video editing and light gaming, and while it is still good at those, I do have some issues. Because the thermals aren't that great even with a repaste it does throttle a little bit even on shorter and lighter Resolve loads, and more on longer or more intensive renders. Processing power is fine, I mostly do 1080p high bitrate exports but it gets quite loud and I'd like a bit more power for higher resolutions and ultrawide. It also doesn't have any extra ports than the 13", which I find odd. While it is thin, it also does feel quite big and heavy now for what it is, which is why I really hope there are some 13 or 14" options. If there is a 13" or 14" laptop that seems good, I'd really like to know about it. The keyboard also doesn't feel good to type on anymore. And, while it was good when I first got it, the battery life isn't what it used to be, and I can't get through a day of even school without switching to Windows. The graphics are obviously not that great, and while I usually don't play AAA games, I'm really looking to play some newer games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but mostly lighter games which work okay on my laptop.

My big question is if I should get a cheaper laptop and a better desktop, since even with something like the Gigabyte Aero 15X, I'm sure the response times as well as the color accuracy with a desktop monitor will be better, same with the keyboard. There's also other things like not really having to worry about heat or fan noise on a desktop. I don't really know much about laptops above $2000, so I might be wrong.

The Coffee Lake 15W CPUs are on apparently on par/better with the one in my Mac at Cinebench, so that means I can do some editing on the go, and also on a PC. I could also go with an upgraded Thinkpad, like a T430, which would be quite cheap or just go all out on a T480. There's also the XPS 15, which isn't actually that expensive for what it offers, and so I could also build a good desktop if I get one of these more cheaper laptops.

I need recommendations for laptops anywhere around the $1000 price range and especially some over the $2000 price point. Battery is a priority. Color accurate screens would also be nice, but they don't need to be color accurate unless they are over $2000. A decent touchpad is a must. I originally got a 2013 15" Macbook Pro as the CPUs are similar but the trackpad on the pre 2015 Macbooks are actually not that good in my opinion, which is mostly why I got the 2015 version.

Something that I like about the Aero 15X is that I think it can have 2 drives. I made the mistake of getting the 256GB drive for my Mac, and with a Windows partition I usually have to copy older videos or projects over to a hard drive. 2 drives would be very nice. I only need 512GB or so of storage though but a second drive would be convenient. Gigabyte's support is apparently non existent, which I am worried about because I don't know any other laptop above or around $2000 with good battery. I can fix things myself, but I can't do anything if say, the screen comes defected.

Something I like about my laptop is just that a lot of people have Macbooks, and so even with the lesser battery I get now, it's really neat to be able to ask someone else for their charger. It's nice that USB C is similar to this so I'd really like to be able to charge over USB C even if it's not the primary method.

I also need ports. It really depends on the laptop obviously but 3 USB ports would be preferred, HDMI, Ethernet if it is thick enough to have one, SD reader is almost a must, preferably flush(it doesnt stick out), but I can use my USB reader, which I already do sometimes. I'd also really want Thunderbolt 3 for a possible eGPU or dock, which I'm still considering for this laptop with a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter.

Which laptop would be able to run low level games better?

Low level games as in Minecraft, ROBLOX, online games, and such.

    Dell Inspiron 15 3000 15.6-Inch Laptop (Matt Black) - (Intel Core i3, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Windows 10) (£380)

Anything "wrong" I should know about? I'm not a gamer, but I am interested in coding, and learning more about Virtual Machines. Hopefully the battery life is good (I know it's hot-swappable), but RAM power is probably more important.

I'm not sure about this one, but I just came across it. So I'll post this one too in case anyone has experience with it or can contrast it favorably with the Lenovo(s).
