Indicator Fast Scroll for RecyclerViews - A library by reddit!

Long lists, like Contacts or Bookmarks, are annoying to scroll through. Most apps provide some way to jump through them quickly, like a handle on the edge of the screen that can be dragged down. This is definitely better than nothing, but from a UX perspective, it's not the best solution. Users have to watch the handle (or the list) as they're scrolling to check what letter they're on, and it makes users put in a little more mental effort than should be needed.

A better alternative is a glanceable list of indicators that the user can use to jump right to where they want to go; no mad flinging or speed reading required. However, this is sorely missing on Android. IndicatorFastScroll is Reddit's take on it.

How it looks in the Reddit app

It works with any RecyclerView and any adapter; all it needs is a callback where you supply an indicator (like the first letter of the item) for a given position. Icons are supported as well. With this setup, you don't need to hold your list's data in any particular way; lists and database cursors work perfectly fine. This is especially nice for database-backed lists, as if you know what sections the list contains, you get to avoid loading the entire list from disk to build them up! The indicators are automatically updated through the adapter, so any notify*() calls will also update the fast scroller accordingly.

It's also styleable like any Android widget; use whatever font, colors, and background you want.

This library makes heavy use of Kotlin. We love it at Reddit, and it's definitely made with Kotlin usage in mind, but it works just as well in plain Java. However, be aware that adding it to an app without Kotlin will increase your APK size, as the Kotlin standard library is a dependency.

There's a sample app in the project that shows some common use cases and features. Check the readme on GitHub for details.

    Try it out!

Bug reports and PRs always welcome!

We're really excited to be releasing this. We shipped it in the Communities screen in the Reddit app a few months ago, and we hope it'll be a big help to anyone here wanting this widget. Designers and users alike are big fans of having one.

Inspired by another post I saw here, I'm publishing some Kotlin gists. These are for asynchronously getting information from Latitude/Longitude with Coroutines.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:20 AM PDT

Specifically, this one contains Location related extensions for asynchronously getting the country name, country code, locality name from a Latitude/Longitude pair (either Location object or LatLng object).

    Uses Geocoder and Kotlin Coroutines.

LinkPreview: My first Open Source Library!

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:16 AM PDT

My library is LinkPreview, a library which creates a convenient and customizable view which can parse links from text and then show a preview of that websites image. It is something I have used in a couple of my apps before and I thought that it would be something other people would benefit from as well! Please let me know of any feedback you have including with the library and the github page itself.

    Thanks everyone!

I want to know if this is possible with Google firebase, or do I need to build a custom back end. I only know a bit of android. I want it to be android + back end.

Feedback regarding launching a new app/mobile game

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:33 PM PDT

We're in the process of launching a new mobile game on Android and we're relatively new to the Android development community. Just thought we would come here and see if we could get a little community feedback from people with experience in doing this type of thing. We're considering some crowd funding options to help with the launch of the app. Does anyone have any suggestions on the dos and don'ts of going this route? Things that have worked and haven't worked? The app is already live on the Play Store so if anyone has any specific questions or wants to see the app, please let me know. I'm not trying to promote or market the app here so I don't want to get flagged for that. We're just looking for genuine feedback on things we should do (or not do) to help this launch successfully. We believe we have a quality app on our hands, just a matter of getting it out there for people to see and play. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Repeating Apps in Play Store

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:47 PM PDT

So, I don't know if it's related to the ratings apocalypse as of late, but no matter what I search - apps seem to repeat in series 4+ times. Sometimes lower ranked apps will be mixed in, but it's hard to find something that doesn't repeat. Anyone else been having this issue? Think this is a bug from Google messing with their rating/search system?

    Example

Questions on the use of google forms inside an app

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 02:07 PM PDT

Hello, I'm trying to develop an app that utilizes google forms, it may not fit as an app because it opens a hyperlink, dunno how it is called. But my concern is the possibility of adapt the google forms and make the replis follow a specific path, like a chain, pass information through a hierarchy of people. Is it a viable way? Or is it better do develop something to do this?

In Play Console, Installs By Device stopped on June 28

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 01:59 AM PDT

In Play Console, Installs By Device stopped on June 28

"Installs By Device" and "Uninstalls By Device" stopped on June 28.

"Installs On Active Devices" stayed in almost the same place (had minimal variation) since June 28.

This happened in all my apps (5).

But the other metrics are normal and I'm getting the amount of ad impressions expected.

Please, could you tell if these metrics in the images also stopped on your consoles?

Google Play prefers first app in the search. Is it discriminating? How it affects competition?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 01:31 AM PDT

Not sure whether this can also contribute do download drops but I would like to ask you what do you think about this weird feature of Google Play?

It is shown on attached video (https://youtu.be/SgSo1-ZhtEs), I'll try to describe it also.

So when you enter some search terms (on the video there is search term "Atomic Clock") then Google Play Shows one app. Then it shows section "You may be also interested in" (which is quite a unrelated to search of "Atomic Clock")
Then it shows section Similar Apps.

And then it shows apps that re are on second (and other) places of search.

I think this discriminates other apps. I think that most users don't scroll down to look at the list. What do you think? Do you think it support Google Play apps competition?

    Any interesting app ideas

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:11 AM PDT

I'm having interviews in 10 days and my resume looks so empty. I need a good project idea, so that I can learn app development and list it on my resume. I can only think of WhatsApp, Twitter or music app clones. I don't think these will impress the interviewers. But hey if you have any interesting idea for a beginner, throw some down in the comments, if you're okay with me using your idea. This job is life-changing for me. So please be kind and consider my request or just ignore me

Does genymotion emulate Samsung devices accurately?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:00 PM PDT

I am using genymotion because the default AVD doesn't allow me to emulate samsung devices.

While Genymotion has various Samsung phones that I can emulate, I wonder, how accurate are they.

I.e - is it just a skin on top of the same OS, or does it actually use Samsung's custom OEM.

Genymotion seems to be trial based. Android Studio is slow for me. What are some free Android Emulators for Mac?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:45 AM PDT

I am an Automation Tester but deciding to move to Mobile Testing. Appium is what I have been looking into.

So I have been looking around for some free Android emulators which does not put a huge load on my mac.

Yes, Android Studio has an emulator. But it literally turns my macbook into a brick.

Any suggestions for free Android emulators for Mac?

    Location tagging incentives?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:13 AM PDT

So I have a friend working on an app and he needs locations tagged by the users for it to work. Thing is he wants to financially reward people for tagging but I think thats going to be a huge mess down the line. I was just wondering if anyone here knew of any ways to give people an incentive to tag locations for free
