If you could give career advice to your younger self... Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:05 PM PDT Hey all. I hope the mods will allow this post to stay as I am looking for advice from Network Engineers/Professionals, and the ITCareerQuestions sub is not very active. For those of you who have been in the industry for a number of years - what type of advice would you give to your younger self when you were first starting out? I've just completed my first year in a NOC and got my CCNA R/S, AWS SA, and SANS GSEC certification. To be honest I'm not a super ambitious person and my ultimate goal is a kind of comfy local government or K12 gig that pays 70k and affords a good work/life balance (time is more important to me than money). My current manager has been a great mentor and he would like me to get the CCNP R/S and another SANS certification this upcoming year. Are there any technologies specifically I should be focusing on? I feel like I am getting pulled into the security stuff, although I'm not sure I'd like to make a career in security. Any other advice on how I can make the best of myself in the next few years? There is so much to learn, so many different avenues to go down... I'd like to have more focus and really set myself up for success when I'm ready for the next career step in ~2 years. Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:28 AM PDT Guysguysguysguys I got clearance on my first big project; I'm to design a project and implement a wireless network to a company. It's a 5 story tall building with around 150 concurrent users scattered through the building. Their requirements is that: must abide to a central configuration (as in, to cut the need to configure every single device by hand); needs to be deployable with PoE; must be discreet (no Asus A3200 transformers shenanigans); Apart from Ubiquity, what more brands can I look into to give them options? Thanks fellow gentlemen! [link] [comments] |
Wireless Signal Strength /RSSI - perspective Posted: 30 Jun 2018 10:14 PM PDT Long story short: the previous guy planned wireless networks by pointing at the ceiling and saying "Gee, that looks like a good spot!" They also didn't consider the range differences between 2.4 and 5 GHz. As of last week I was baptized in as the new "wireless guy" for my company with a complaint about a remote offices WiFi quality. Due to budget constraints, we don't have the travel funds to send me onsite. However, I was not surprised when I checked it out remotely (2 access points; L shaped office; ~8500 square feet; obviously huge 5GHz coverage abysses). While gathering data remotely with an end user (I tried to do a basic passive site survey with a basic WiFi analyzer app), I noticed there was a disparity between the signal strength values from the client perspective and the AP perspective. The controller/AP showed a client signal strength of -70dbm The client showed an RSSI of -60dbm Now on to my actual question: In my research, [i think] I've learned that true passive site surveys go off of the client side RSSI value. What is the significance here as it relates to how I should be interpreting the data? Does the signal strength on the controller side "not matter at all" as long as the client side RSSI is decent (-67dbm)? I know there's more to consider than just signal strength; with this question, I'm just trying to scope my thoughts as precisely as possible but also give you all the relevant details about why had an end user walking around with a WiFi analyzer app in the first place. EDIT: thank you everybody for the support and recommendations. You've helped straighten this topic out in my head and I'm going to be pursuing the CWNA for a deeper dive (along with possibly some vendor training if proper site survey equipment is in the budget for next year). Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:22 AM PDT Basically my professor wants me to ask someone in the field what types of ethical issues that you have come in to contact with. I need 1-3 people to share some ethical issues they have dealt with in a descriptive story or paragraphs. You don't have to share anything if you aren't comfortable with it, but it would be a big help! Here are the questions I have to answer about your story.

Where is the access control on the FMC? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:24 PM PDT Quesiton1: I'm trying to make sure I'm in the right section on the FMC to control access to the remote firepower boxes. I want to limit SSH and HTTP access to the management address of the boxes. I've provided a link below on the page I'm looking at. Is this where I would configure these settings? According to the documentation on the Cisco website in the link below, there should be an access-list button, but there isn't one. So I don't want to go and guess the settings and cause an unnecessary outage. Question2. Where do you control access to the FMC itself? [link] [comments] |
AKM Authentication Key Management Posted: 01 Jul 2018 01:11 PM PDT Hello, I don't understand the principle of AKM and how it works with 802.11. I have already googled it that's why i'm asking here. Thank you very much [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 06:53 PM PDT Does anyone knows if any brand of switches come with this kind of configuration. One of my clients is asking for a Switch with SFp+ Combo ports but I already checked Cisco , Dell and HP and I only could find SFP combo ports. Maybe another brand have this kind of ports( Brocade, Extreme).? Thank you [link] [comments] |

Did a website for client, local ISP refers to old hosting name server? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:47 AM PDT Hello I have a client for whom we launched a website on June 1st. We switched their hosting from a local company to GoDaddy and saved them a lot of money. I don't know if this issue is the old company messing with us, an oversight with our dns files, or a local ISP issue. Previously the local company transferred the domain to us in the spring and we left their hosting up until June. The problem is when any customer with the local ISP of our client is getting their old site. (Which is bad because he is a local business) I called the local hosting company who was very short and rude with me. They said that the website was forwarded correctly and we did everything right. I called Godaddy and they checked the dns @ and a records and they also said that it was pointed correctly. I did a traceroute on my clients computer and is showing the local hosting still. I switched to Google dns and it pulled up the new site. I also had one of his customers call me and I put Google dns on her PC and it worked fine. I thought it was possible a caching issue or his router or PC but he has called me and said he is getting phone calls that the website is down by local customers. I have called the ISP 3 times and they escalated the ticket to tier 3 support but I was wondering if there is anything I am missing here? Also if there is another subreddit that might have an insight. Not sure if this is the best place but thanks for reading. [link] [comments] |

Networking multiple apartments together Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:11 PM PDT My company is sending 15 people for 1 year to Atlanta. We will be providing housing at a nearby apartment complex (15 1 bedroom apartments). The apartments are wired with coax and telephone. Is there anyway to share a 1gb fiber internet connection (company Will pay to get this installed if possible)? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
