This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Gaming FPS went from 200+ to 90-120... CPU Temp is also at 65ºCelsius is that okay?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:10 AM PDT

    My build:

    I5 4460

    GTX 960

    8GB RAM

I used to have 180-240 FPS in CS GO and now I currently have 90-130 FPS with constant drops. Initially I checked CPU temperature and it was always at 75-79º Celsius, so I cleaned the fan which was fullof dirt and it now runs at 65º Celsius, maybe 70º for very long sessions.

However, my FPS only improved a bit, is there nothign I can do? What could be the reason for this to drop so much overtime?

My friend has the EXACT SAME build and he still has 180-220 FPS.

    Thank you to this sub.

You've helped me a lot over the years in setting up new rigs and making wise choices in my builds.

Thanks to you, I managed to diagnose a simple issue with my living room pc (fans and dvd player disconnected from psu) after I noticed a fault after a house move.

I think that a lot of people forget that it's really important to know how to maintain your pc and have the confidence to do it. Even if it's something as simple and easy as the pc equivalent of changing a tyre.

What's the scariest part about building a PC to you?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:50 AM PDT

For me it's either: 1. When you find out about those eight little one pin connectors that go in a different order for every motherboard. 2. Installing graphics drivers. As they install, your disply starts to flash on and off, and until you restart there are weird streching abd flickering glitches all over everything.

    How much should i spend?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:49 AM PDT

I play Overwatch and other esport games, however I might want to try games like battlefield and pubg. My max budget is around 1600$. However I dont know how much I should spend, as I play Overwatch for 95% of the time. Im not going to play Overwatch on high settings so i could get 144fps with a gtx 970 or gtx 1050ti. Since the prices where i live still are quite high since the mining apocalypse I think this might me a good shot and save some money. The best price I have found for a new gtx 1070 was 550$ and that was a asus dual oc. I found a gtx 1050ti for around 120$ that was used and I think that is a good value for what I need right now.

So if I want to upgrade my gpu in the future, should i spend more money on a cpu like the i7 8700k or 2700x and have room for upgrading to any gpu i want? Im thinking of light streaming but not really any content creation. However I want this pc to be able to last me for many years, at least 4-5.

Sorry if u guys get asked this question all the time heh.

    GTX 980 4gb vs GTX 1060 6gb

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:40 AM PDT

I am currently looking for a new graphics card other than the 1050 ti. I've looked into AMD cards and still might consider them but I know most games favor Nvidia, so I've settled between the 980 and 1060. I found a EVGA 980 4gb for $220 and a EVGA 1060 SSC for $240. The 980 has better performance than the 1060 but the 1060 has 2gb more vram, which is mote future proof, and you pay an extra $20. Which card would you choose out of the 2?

    Newegg Windows 10 Scam?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 01:17 AM PDT

    Hey friends

So I just finished building my computer, bought all the parts from newegg, so I figured I'd also grab my copy of windows 10 (digital download) from there as well so I could grab it all at once. However when I went to install and activate windows I found out that I could not activate with my key as it was not valid. I called up Microsoft to see what the deal was and it turns out that the key I was sent from Newegg has already been used. Microsoft advised me to replace it or get a refund from the seller.

I went on to read some reviews (I didn't before because it's Windows I figured i knew what I was buying) and sure enough there are tons of comments about other people with the same issue as me. It seems that Newegg has been selling large numbers of fake Windows 10 keys.

Wondering if anyone has heard anything about this. I googled a bit but couldn't find anything outside the newegg reviews. Is this a scam or am I missing something? I thought Newegg was a reputable seller and frequently used by the PC building community.

Edit: Here's a link to the product page with the reviews I was talking about: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832397686&reviews=all

Edit 2: Working on getting a replacement but the team that does it at newegg is out til monday according to CS. They were very nice though so hopefully this gets cleared up quick :)

Graphics card under 100-150 bucks that can run fortnite?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:13 AM PDT

Hey there /r/buildapc , I am really into gaming but don't have the most knowledge in building pc's. Anyways with fortnite being the craze right now I see my little nephew feeling a little bit left out that he can't play fortnite like other kids his age as his parents don't want to/can't buy him a pc/ps/xbox, I wanted to suprise him with a pc as I have a few parts laying around, the only thing I cannot get for him is a graphics card as I don't a spare one, I also have to watch my money as I am currently in college, any suggestions which card can do the trick? As long as it can run the game normally on low settings it is good enough. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

    Upgrading PC for Battlefield V

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:32 AM PDT

So I know it's just an Alpha but my CPU is struggling in even BF1.

Basically what I was thinking of was upgrading to 8700k, but then I'd have to get a new motherboard, new RAM, new CPU cooler, new windows 10?

I could just get a 4790k but still would only have 4 cores.

Having friends of a friend build my first PC what should it cost plus how much should I tip him?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:08 PM PDT

This is a friend of a friend so I don't know him or probably won't meet him and just be given the PC through my friend. My friend said he built him a decent vr ready PC for about 400-500 USD. I'm looking for a PC to run Overwatch Highest settings possible. Any current or future games in at least better than console settings. And I will be getting a vive in the future so vr would be a plus. I could build(some tech background disassembling consoles and phones) myself but I just don't have the time to go through a bunch of guides and possibly messing something up. What would be a decent price so I don't get scammed and what should I tip him for labor?

Edit: this will be a living room pc as I plan on it to replace my PS4

    Will an upgrade suffice?

This is my current setup: http://www.userbenchmark.com/PCBuilder/Custom/S3941-M274.7658.1188.1767.89190vsS0-M

My gpu just died and I am waiting for the next gen Nvidia gpu to release. Would that be sufficient of an upgrade for my set up or would that just create a bottleneck? Edit: Would probably get the 1180 or 1170.

    Upgrading my fx4300

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:05 PM PDT

So yesterday my 3yo 750ti died. And looking for buying a new gpu found out that pretty much everything you can get these day will be savagely bottlenecked by my fx4300 cpu. So here comes my question. I thought about a gpu around 200/250, the price of a 1050ti or a 1060 3gb. And for my cpu thought about buying an fx8350, since i would have to change my mobo and ram to go ryzen, and that would go from 300€(1050ti+fx8350) to an unaffordable 600€(1050ti+r5 1600x + 8gb ddr4 + x470 mobo). Do you think fx8350 will do the trick for 1080p60 at least a couple of years?(lets say medium graphics) If i wanted to upgrade to ryzen i would have to wait at least a year to save the money(and stay with my fx4300 for now)

    Cooling hard drives

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:42 PM PDT

So I've gotten the Phanteks P350X and I love the case vs my old one with just one issue is there a way to cool my hard drives today as I was gaming the drive got to 40 c and I could hear it ticking so I shut the whole PC after I saw that so I was wondering is there a way to cool them off if it's in an fully inclosed basement ? Would turning my PSU fan towards to top of the basement get air flowing or?

    1070Ti or 1080 GPU?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 01:52 PM PDT

I'm almost done ordering all my parts and was going to get a 1070Ti, I noticed that the FTW models for EVGA are about the same price as the 1080 and i'm not sure if I should just get a basic 1070Ti or just go ahead with a 1080. Are the FTW models worth it with their ability in overclocking or should I just go ahead with the SC models? Is it worth just getting a 1080 or does the Ti/FTW model have some more features to offer?

    Retro Stereo Tuner HTPC build

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:17 AM PDT

    Build pics: https://imgur.com/a/G64IFiG

I wanted to do something a little unconventional to replace the old laptop I had been using as an HTPC. While the laptop worked well enough, the fan was noisy and sometimes it had issues waking from sleep. I remember I saw a post on here where somebody converted a cassette deck into an HTPC, which gave me the idea for this build. I found a broken Kenwood stereo tuner on eBay for $40 that I really liked. The sliding needle reminded of my granddad's old radio that I loved playing with when I was a kid.

This build is exclusively for streaming Netflix, Hulu, my wife's yoga videos, etc., so any hardware from the last decade probably would have been sufficient. Anyhow, I had a few goals with this. First, keep a low budget. I'm some I ended up under $200 - probably closer to $100. Second, recycle some of the old parts I had laying around. Obviously this helped the budget. The parts I ended up being able to reuse were a case and PSU from a Lenovo Thinkcentre M81 SFF, a 4GB stick of DDR3, and a 128 GB mSATA SSD. Third, I wanted it to be quiet, although absolute silence wasn't a huge deal because I have a fish tank in the adjoining room that would drown out minor fan noise. Fourth, I wanted it to run cool with minimal air flow so I didn't have to add more fans.

After taking apart the stereo, I decided that easiest way to get this assembled was to cut down the Thinkcentre case so it would fit inside the stereo, and assemble most of the components on the Thinkcentre case like a standard PC build. I wanted to keep the main dial functional to move the slide needle, which required a little creativity and was probably the most time-consuming part of the build. The other slightly complicated part was replacing the 3 incandescent lights, which ran on 8 volts, with LEDs. To do this, I ran the extra SATA connector from the PSU into a terminal block and used the 5v SATA wire to power the new LEDs. After a bit of cutting, welding, grinding, drilling, riveting, and swearing, I think it came out pretty good looking.

For the remainder of the components that I didn't have on hand, I went with used OEM as much as possible because they're dirt cheap on eBay. The motherboard is from a Dell Optiplex 980 and cost $20. The only requirements I had for the motherboard was it had to include an HDMI port with decent enough integrated graphics so I didn't need a GPU, and it had to take DDR3 since that's what I had on hand. These requirements basically locked me into an LGA1155 socket. To keep the power down, I went with an i3-3220T ($30). The CPU cooler is an Arctic Alpine 11 Plus CPU cooler, selected mostly for the price ($12), but it also appeared to have one of the largest heatsinks for a horizontal fan cooler. I also had to get a caddy ($8) to adapt my mSATA SSD to normal SATA connectors.

Because of the low power CPU and the light workload this thing is going to get, I didn't bother with case fans. I drilled some holes in the case above the CPU cooler to add some airflow. So far the temps haven't exceeded 44°C.

Should I upgrade my whole rig or just the GPU for my needs? Is overclocking a viable option?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:27 PM PDT

    Hi,

I was about to build myself a new gaming PC but my brother just gifted me his old one and I honestly think that this rig could absolutely satisfy my needs for the next years.

He just gifted me a rig with the following parts:

    • i5-3570k (stock cooler, other one broke)
    • Gigabyte Z77-DS3H
    • 8 GB RAM 1333Mhz
    • 450W 80 Gold power supply
    • SSD 500GB
    • Fractal Design Case (I would like to change it, hate the design)
    • There used to be a HD 7970 but it's broken, so I need a new GPU for sure.

I need the PC to play games that mostly came out in the last 2-3 years in 1080P and high settings. Also I have a FHD FreeSync monitor with 144hz.

My original plan: Buy a RX 580 8GB and a CPU cooler and call it a day. But I'm kinda skeptical if this older CPU still has enough power to not bottleneck the RX 580. Should I overclock the CPU? Is it even possible with these parts or do I need more upgrades (power supply?)?

What's your opinion? Should I keep working with this rig or ditch it and buy something completly new? My budget used to be 700€.

Thanks for every answer. I'm happy to answer any question!

First build ~$1000. Looking for some input

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:27 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming and just general internet browsing. Also I'll be using Lightroom to edit photos and things like that.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I would like to be able to play games on good settings. It doesn't need to be too crazy, but I also don't want to have to upgrade right away. I'm currently using a pretty old laptop that can't run anything, so I feel like I'll be impressed by any decent upgrade. I already have a monitor, but it's old and I'll likely upgrade it soon. I know this answer is kind of vague, but I've never been a big PC gamer before this so I'm not really sure on specifics.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Budget is around $1000 - $1100, but I'm flexible. I obviously wouldn't mind saving money, and I can be convinced to spend a little more if it's worth it. The draft I posted below is a bit over budget.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

I'm in the US and within driving distance to a Microcenter, so I would like to take advantage of that.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Okay so I threw together what I think seems like a decent build. I realize that case is expensive, but I really like it. From what I saw a lot of people with this case use an AIO cooler. Reviews make them seem kind of unreliable and they are pretty expensive. Since I have no plans to overclock is the cooler even necessary? Am I being an idiot and should I just get a bigger and save money? I'd like some input there.

Also I'm not loyal to any specific brand when it comes to the CPU. I have not been keeping up with PC building for the past year or so, so I'm kind of lost here. Would it be better to go with AMD over Intel? If so which one?

Since I'm spending this much anyway should I just get the Excellent AMD Gaming Build (except maybe with a cheaper graphics card) and say screw it with the Micro ATX?

I realize I'm sort of rambling, so please let me know if you need clarification on anything or if I missed something. Thanks in advance!

New Build not playing nice with older graphics card (no video output)

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:43 AM PDT

So, I'm hoping someone here has some suggestions as I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out what I'm doing here with this new build. The new components are:

    AMD Ryzen 2700X

Asus Crosshair VII Hero Wifi (X470)

    2x8Gig FlareX 3200 C14 Ram

    Corsair AX860 PSU

1 TB Samsung Evo 860 SSD

    Asus ROG PG348 Gsync monitor

Now because I'm waiting for the nVidia 1180 cards to come out, I intended to use my old original GTX Titan 6 gig card that runs perfectly fine in my old system (an ancient i930). However, I can't get a signal out of the GTX Titan when installed on either the HDMI, DVI, or Display Port. The motherboard codes report that it's sitting at the bios screen waiting for me to do setup, and isn't reporting a GPU error.

However, I CAN get a signal out of a fanless nVidia G210 PCI card, and an old nVidia GTX 460 installed into the new system; I can get into the bios, verify everything else is behaving itself.

    I tried:

    - Using every different combination of outputs on the new PSU and every combination of appropriate cable. Nothing.

    - I tried using my older HX1000 PSU in case it was a PSU issue with the AX860. No difference.

    - Tried an older DVI/VGA monitor with no Gsync, standard 1920x1080, using both DVI ports on the Titan. Nothing.

Anyone have any suggestions? About the only thing I can try now is to install a new graphics card in there and see if it works, but I'm lost as to why two much older cards work fine, but the relatively new Titan gives me nothing. I really don't want to invest in a new card right now though with the 1180s just around the corner; currently running my new system with the G210 installed so I can at least set up everything else I use it for other than gaming.
