Woke up to a split cable line (Comcast) Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:18 AM PDT I have Comcast cable and I woke up to a split cable line going from my house to my neighbors and the ground is all torn up it looks like s*** and it's a direct splitter that was put in from my house cable line to my neighbors this has to be illegal and it's pissing me off, what do I do??? Comcast truck was there. [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Jul 2018 07:16 PM PDT Recently moved into this house that has Ethernet in the walls. The owner said the cable tech broke it when they moved out. He said I'm welcome to fix it if I want. Can anyone point me to where I should start? Just plugging my router into the black port doesn't send the connection to the wall ports. Here's a picture of where the box was, I guess... The black cables are coax, which I don't think will matter, I'm not paying for cable. [link] [comments]
Help setting up prewired home network Posted: 31 Jul 2018 05:57 PM PDT I just moved into a new apartment and discovered that it is wired for cat5 throughout. There are 5 plates, 1 upstairs and 4 downstairs. Each plate has a coax and cat5 jack. The network panel is upstairs in the bedroom closet. Here's a photo of the wires in the panel: https://imgur.com/a/nuGRUeR Close up of the patch panel: https://imgur.com/a/uHXSGpw There are a group of cables running to each plate: 1 black coax, 1 white coax, 1 grey cat5, 1 orange cable, and 1 white cat5. Only the black coax cable and grey cat5 seem to have jacks at each plate, the other wires are just loose inside. So my question is: How do I connect my modem and distribute the internet through the cat5? I don't care about distributing to all of the coax, I just need the internet distributed. Do I need a switch or hub? How do I connect to the patch panel? There aren't any RJ45 jacks/plugs in the panel, so I'm assuming I'll need to wire one of those ups. Thanks for the help! How was it possible to access someone else's router through my coax connection? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 01:33 PM PDT I'm pretty comfortable with home networking, but I have no idea what could have caused this. I've concluded that it must have been some sort of incorrect wiring, but I'm not sure how. My ISP is Comcast. In my apartment, there is a coaxial cable coming from the wall. That's the cable I plug my modem into. At one point, I switched to my old Verizon modem/router combo without calling Comcast to have them changed the registered MAC address of my modem. I'm not sure about this part, but I think that the Verizon modem/router was set to a subnet I don't usually use. Say it was 10.0.0.0/24. To my surprise, I still had internet through the Verizon router. I did a speed test, and the speed was multiple times higher than what I payed for. I tried to go to my routers web interface, and typed 192.168.1.1, which is the subnet and address I typically use, forgetting that I was on a 10.0.0.0 address. I was then connected to the web interface of a different Verizon router (happened to be the same model). I tried the default credentials, and they worked. From that web interface, I could see the WiFi SSID chosen for that router, and from my wireless devices, I could see that SSID, confirming that it was the router of one of my neighbours. It definitely was another tenants router, and not some sort of whole-building router. I cancelled my Comcast service, mostly because I was curious, and the internet continued to work. It was still faster than what I had previously payed for. This worked correctly for maybe 2 weeks, when it stopped working (I considered that maybe my service was just lasting until the end of the month, but I was only billed until the exact day that I cancelled service). I bought a new modem, payed for Comcast internet again, and was back up and running with my payed-for speed. How was any of this possible? Any ideas? [link] [comments]
HELP MY VMS 1100 doesent turn on! My family is mad at me for it! Posted: 31 Jul 2018 08:17 PM PDT Hello, I might have messed up my FIOS VMS 1100 because I tried to use the HDMI cable to play around with my Rasbery PI minicomputer and now the FIOS VMS box is not turning on. I have tried to do the things that they said in the manual top and an AC outlet. Unplug the VMS set-top from the AC outlet, plug it back in, and then press the POWER button. • If the VMS set-top is connected to a switched outlet on another unit, verify that that unit is powered on. Unplug the power cord from the VMS1100 AC outlet, plug it back it in, and then press the POWER button. It is recommended that you use an unswitched outlet, if possible. • Press the POWER button on the VMS1100 front panel instead of the remote control. The batteries in the remote control may be depleted. and it still doesent work. Should I get help from the call desk? It would be a lot more preferable if I can fix it on my own, if you guys can give me some tips or some understanding on what could possibly be the problem please reply thank you very much for your time! Posted: 31 Jul 2018 08:10 PM PDT Which do you guys think is the better router overall? The Netgear appears to have much more raw bandwidth, but the Asus has a faster CPU. So VPN and USB storage will be faster on the Asus, but the Netgear will have better wifi. I currently own both of these routers. Which one of them do you think I should keep? Which one would I get more money for on the used market? TIA for any insight. [link] [comments]
Trying to create a local switched network using a wifi extender with Asus RT-68U Posted: 31 Jul 2018 06:50 PM PDT So I have a 2 RT-68u's setup with merlin wrt. Router 1 is the main router with internet. Then in another room I have another router 2 setup in AP mode and various devices plugged into the ports of the 2nd router. However when I'm going from host A to host B (both connected with cat5 to the router 2) the speeds are slow ~10MBps when I expect ~100Mbps. I'm assuming that all my traffic is going back over wifi to Router 1 instead of directly being switched from router 2. Any one have experience with setting something like this up? I've also tried the media bridge option for router 2 and it's also slow ~10MBps. [link] [comments]
Home Router, Firewall, and WiFi Posted: 31 Jul 2018 06:37 PM PDT I am in need of some expert help building out a new home network. My current home network that consists of (2) Airport Extremes and (1) Airport Express and is on the blitz and it is time to replace it all (especially since Apple won't be in the business of airports anymore). Albeit I do enterprise networking (fw, switches, routers) at work, I have no desire to play network and security admin on the home front... That said, my wishlist of features is:
Price for all gear should be no more than about $700. I don't mind a recurring subscription. I've looked at Cujo, RatTrap, Pfsense (not as simple and would require lots of tweaking), mesh wifi (Eero, Amplifi, Velop, etc), regular wifi (unifi gear, but requires tweaking). Again I don't really want to have to tweak very much ... my complex support duties should end at the office. I'd appreciate any insight. [link] [comments]
1st time internet buyer through SuddenLink Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:46 AM PDT Hello, this is my first post on this sub. I'm moving into my new house with my wife and we are buying an internet package through SuddenLink. It's got up to 400Mb download speeds and 40Mb upload. I want to buy a modem and router that can handle these speeds and is approved by SuddenLink. I'd rather the modem and router be separate. They offer free installation. Any advice on which modems and routers could handle these speeds? I've heard that I should get one with faster download speeds than 400Mb because they could upgrade my area's speed in the future. I'm completely new to this so if there's something I'm not thinking about please let me know! [link] [comments]
Itermittent Home Network Shutdowns Posted: 31 Jul 2018 06:06 PM PDT Hey lovely people of reddit, I've run into a weird situation where seemingly everytime my girlfriend enters my apartment she nukes the internet and disconnects from all devices. I think the whole router disconnects as the wifi doesn't even show up, it's not a matter of losing internet connection. She's only got her cellphone a pixel 2, not too sure why this is happening. Router is an Asus dualband 3x3 80.11 AC I think? It wasn't like a cheepo one. Other devices hooked up at the time are a laptop, an xbox, and my galaxy s7. Rather confused, please send help. Thank you! [link] [comments]
How much packet loss is normal? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 05:30 PM PDT Hey everyone. i hope this doesn't fall into the category of "dumb questions that the asker should already know the answer to", but i guess we will see. I work for a major ISP. We are not a wireless ISP. I had a customer cal back for an installation i did a month ago for intermittency/slow speeds. I know I do good work, so this raised a red flag for me. Being that it was a static ip address service, i decided to run a ping from one of our office computers. Well, I had my boss do it because i was on another unrelated call and thus not a computer. 5000 packets sent, 17 lost. Now let me tell you the ironic part of the situation. Our office network is a joke. its reliable, but it is consistently slow, so the packet loss very well could have been from that. For a minute though, lets forget about the shitty office network. Is 17 out of 5000 packets significant? Could one even go as far as to say its normal? Thanks [link] [comments]

My laptop was sharing my wifi name with another laptop not currently at my router location Posted: 31 Jul 2018 05:02 PM PDT I was sitting next to my friend. We both have Windows laptops. Mine is a Dell while his is HP. He has never connected to my apartments wifi or even had been there but he was able to see my apartments wifi network. He was not connected to my parents home wifi, where we were at the moment. We were not at my apartment. How is this possible? [link] [comments]
Is Mikrotik a good choice for a home router? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:31 PM PDT I saw some posts where people were saying the wireless router brands you can find at Best Buy are not very good. They said Mikrotik is good. From what I've read about Mikrotik, it seems to get good reviews, but I also read it is complicated to set up. Like there's not much of a web-based configuration interface and you have to type in a lot of commands. I just want to set up 2 networks - one for me and one for guests. Along with some MAC filtering. Nothing complicated. Would a Mikrotik router be a good choice for me? Any specific model? I found one on Amazon called the "Mikrotik Routerboard RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN Sfp Port plus 10 Port Ethernet". [link] [comments]
What equipment to get with ATT Fiber in apartment? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:19 PM PDT Hello everyone, I recently moved into an apartment (2-bedroom ~1150 sqft.) and I have ATT fiber. I was going to go with a Ubiquiti setup, but I'm not exactly sure if the USG supports full gigabit speeds. I believe the newer one will, but please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not opposed to running ethernet cables to the other bedroom, but if I can help not to I prefer that. Any help is appreciated! [link] [comments]
ASUS RT-AC86U Dual Wan Routing Rules Problem Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:59 PM PDT ASUS RT-AC86U PRIMARY WAN: PlusNet ADSL SECONDARY WAN: Virgin Media ROUTING RULES:
My Raspberry PI (static 192.168.1.80) is routed through the Primary WAN. Everything else is routed through the Secondary WAN. This works when both internet connections are working. But - if the Primary WAN goes down, the PI is switched to the Secondary WAN. How do I prevent the PI from ever using the secondary WAN? [link] [comments]
Fios - Convert coax to ethernet (can't access ONT) Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:57 PM PDT This seems like a typical problem - I've got Verzion fios, I want to use a router that only has an ethernet port so I don't have to rent the stupid verizon router. But... every variation of search terms I've used arrives at solutions that require running ethernet from the ONT. I can't do this. I'm renting my apartment and the landlord is not up for running ethernet through the walls. So I want to know if I can use something like this (or something else) to take the ethernet cable that's coming into my apartment and convert the signal to cat5. This device is advertised to go the opposite direction, and I can't seem to find any credible source that says I can go ONT -> coax -> <SOME\_DEVICE> -> ethernet. [link] [comments]
Which Orbi system? Also created a comparison sheet for others! Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:39 PM PDT All, Bare with me as my networking skills are pretty bad. I have a 2k sq ft home. Well more like 3k when you include the basement where I live. Home office is downstairs with 3 total floors. Likely have a few hard wired stuff to the router components but upstairs may be some TV's and Xboxs. I see like 10 different Orbi systems. What really confuses me is:
Can anyone help me figure out which Orbi system should I buy? I also created this Orbi System Comparison sheet for myself but am sharing as it might help others. Orbi System Comparison Worksheet Thanks! [link] [comments]
Setting up Amplifi HD mesh network with Cali 844g-1 from ISP Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:12 PM PDT Hey everyone, I got my fiber connection set up today (woohoo!) but the only equipment they provided was an 844G gateway. I had previously bought the amplifi HD mesh network because I want to maximize coverage. I can't find a bridge mode option, so is there anything I need to know before trying this setup? I want to use only the mesh for wifi without losing any speed. Thanks!! [link] [comments]
Well, netgear support us awful. X-post. Posted: 31 Jul 2018 12:08 AM PDT I bought a netgear router, ac1750, less than a year ago. It stopped working a few days ago. I just spent over three hours of the phone with netgear to get a warranty replacement. I had to call twice, the second tech had to escalate the call before they could confirm I had already ran all the troubleshooting steps (many of which were asinine), and then in the end they tried to make me pay shipping to have the defective unit returned to them before they would ship me a replacement. I finally got them to ship me a replacement, but I have to ship the old one back within 7 days or they're going to charge my card for the full cost of the replacement. Shipping will be at least a week to get here. Seriously, fuck you Netgear. [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:02 PM PDT I have a duplex home of around 1500 sq ft. My dlink n300, when placed at the centre of the house, in the living room, gives amazing coverage throughout the house. My question is, whether the TP Link AC 7 ( which is a much newer device) provide the same or better coverage throughout the entire house? [link] [comments]
Modem/router recommendations for small apartment? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 10:03 AM PDT Hi guys, I'll be moving into an apartment in a few weeks and was planning on getting a wow 500 Mbps plan. I've been shopping around on amazon for a long time now and am trying to find either a modem/router combo or one of each for around or less than $115. Would love any advice y'all could give. Would be used for 2 smart tv's, phones, laptop, Nintendo switch, and ethernet for my desktop. I really don't need long range for a router but am mostly confused as to where to go with the modem, seems to be so many that are similar. My plan was just to buy a refurb one on amazon and then a decent ~$45 router. And I know I'll call and check to make sure whatever modem I choose works with um'. Thanks! [link] [comments]
My router strength is not strong enough, is it possible to use my extra router as an wifi extender? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 01:05 PM PDT I have an extra TP-link-ac1900 in my house and was wondering if it's possible to use that as a wifi extender. I'll definitely need to watch tutorials on how to do it, but just want to see if it it's possible first. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Who do I talk to about this? (server, networking) Posted: 31 Jul 2018 12:58 PM PDT Hi, I'm part of a very small business with some specific tech needs that I believe are related to setting up a server or getting networking to be fast and easy. I'm at the limit of my knowledge so I'm trying to find a company to consult with, but honestly I don't even know what to google. Are there individuals who can talk to me about what we should do, and if so what are these individuals called? [link] [comments] |
