My wife didn't return her Comcast gear and accidentally got away with it... can we use it now? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:52 AM PDT Hello all, My wife thought she returned a Comcast router/modem setup. Comcast said she didn't, and they were correct, and she argued them until they gave up, lol. Now, several years later, it's time to sign up for Comcast again, and we still have their old gear. Can I sign up for the bring your own equipment deal and use the old equipment without getting in trouble? Will the MAC address be bad or something? I don't feel any huge moral constraints about not renting their equipment at the moment. [link] [comments] |
AT&T internet doesn't work when ps4 comes Posted: 03 Jul 2018 02:57 PM PDT Normally, I can get a consistent 200 Mbps download and upload on my desktop. I share my 300 Mbps plan with like 4 other computers and 3 TVs. My phone works fine as well. But, when my brother comes over with his ps4, my internet cuts off every 30 minutes. How do I fix this? Why does this even happen? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:37 PM PDT I recently purchased an Orbi RBK50 to help with buffering and speed because my computer is on the third floor and modem is on the first floor. Speed has greatly improved but I noticed some slight buffering last night while streaming video. Am I right to think that I should switch to hooking my cpu by ethernet cable to the Orbi satellite rather than use the wifi? The satellite is only about 2 feet away from my cpu. After running internet tests it seems like my wifi to the satellite is a little faster than hooking up by ethernet to the satellite. But I wonder if the ethernet cable from satellite to the cpu will make the connection more stable and remove buffering probs. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Modem and Ethernet in the Basement, Wireless Router Upstairs? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:13 PM PDT Hello! I just moved and am trying to figure out how I can set up my home network. The house has Ethernet jacks on all levels that I would love to have work. Theses jacks all lead down to the basement (about 7 lines). The problem I run into is that I'd also like my wireless router to be on the main level so that it reaches the 2nd floor well. At first I thought I could have my modem in the basement and plug it into a switch, then plug all the hardwire Ethernet cables into the switch and have my router plugged in to one of the Ethernet ports on the main floor. After some investigation though it seems that won't work since a switch is not managed. Would I be able to have two routers? A wired one that splits the signal in the basement and my current wireless one on the main floor to create the wireless aspect of the network? If so what would be a decent 8 port router for that? What kind of setup can I do here? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Possible to redirect HTTP -> HTTPS at the router? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:10 PM PDT I would like to experiment with using the web over port 443 only. I know I can block port 80, but I would also like to know if it is possible to redirect protocol requests. Since HTTPS is merely a protocol it can run on multiple ports. I'm thinking a proxy may be required, but perhaps I'm over thinking it. Have two routers to test with, one is LEDE/OpenWRT and the other DD-WRT. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:08 PM PDT Hello, I am looking to buy a new router, and my budget is approx. 200 CAD $ I went on amazon and found this one: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00YY3XSSA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&psc=1 Is there anything better on the market, under my budget, that i should check out? I am sick of the big ping spikes that i have with my actual router. I play a lot of competitive games Feel free to leave any other thoughts/reviews on this router if it happens that you have the same Thanks a lot! Edit: This router is going to be used by 5 persons, 2 average users (phone +pc), 2 over 50 y/o(they stream a movie here and there) and 1 tech head/gamer with a few PCs, cellphones, connected devices (google home, smart plugs...) OpenWRT support for TP-Link Archer A7 vs C7? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:04 PM PDT Amazon has both the Archer C7 and the newer Archer A7, but I can't find any mention of the A7 on OpenWRT's supported device list. Does anyone know if the A7 is supported, or if there's even any difference between it and the C7? [link] [comments] |
WIFI to Detached Garage/Workshop Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:00 PM PDT I will be having a new home built this year. I will have a detached garage/workshop about 70 feet from the house. I am having a 4 inch conduit run from the house basement to the detached workshop to allow CAT6, home audio, etc. to be run. What is my best option to have solid WIFI in the detached workshop. Do I just get a good access point and configure it? My only option for high speed home network will be XFinity. Recommendations? [link] [comments] |
I suspect my Asus rt-56u may be failing; should I try new firmware or just replace the hardware? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:54 PM PDT Running RSync and backup programs (Backblaze) often brings my network totally down, even with QoS on.... Wireless and wired connections remain but DNS appears to drop network-wide. Stopping RSync and Backblaze brings it back online. Normally I get speeds of 100mb down and 5mb up, which I would prefer the backup programs use as much bandwidth as possible while allowing normal web browsing to remain stable. I'm running the latest stock firmware which has not been updated in a long time it seems. I've looked into OpenWRT and it looks interesting, but is it worth trying to force new firmware onto this or should I just look at upgrading the router and/or my modem altogether ? I'm tempted to upgrade the router regardless due to Asus not putting out security patches for that model anymore. Also, I am using the Arris SURFboard SB6141 as my modem. I can spend around $160-$175 USD on all equipment. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you ! [link] [comments] |
Can I connect an Xfinity modem to a coax leading to a DirecTV satellite dish? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:21 PM PDT Hello! Okay so my grandma has a Directv satellite dish and from this there is a coaxial cable that runs into a splitter. The splitter outputs 4 coaxial cables and each one runs into a different room of the house. At each one of these rooms they have a DirecTV cable box thing where it outputs television channels you can watch on TV I bought an Xfinity 30 day prepaid modem and can't seem to figure out how to wire this thing. Can I just plug it into one of the coax cables in the rooms that lead to the DirecTV dish? Or are they not compatible at all? I found this thread that says they need to be separated but I'm not sure what that means. Do I need a comcast satellite dish? Thank you for your help. [link] [comments] |

Can someone help me explain this issue to my ISP. Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:37 PM PDT We have been having issues with our ISP over the past few months. It has taken them a long time to start working on the problem... and now that they have the original issue of (high ping in the evenings) has been fixed. However, now we have been getting a new issue which to me seems to be the internet totally disconnecting for a few seconds (happens on average, once every 3.5 minutes). -- Issue 1: Instead of 20ish ping to Chicago based server... we were getting 250-500 ping (only happened from 6pm-11pm... not sure why only during that time zone). This seemed to be fixed by my ISP (local small time ISP btw) re-aligning their towers that had apparently shifted due to storms). -- After this fix of theirs the ping seems to be the normal usual 20-30 ping that we had been accustomed to for the last 5+ years. However, after this fix, we are now getting a new problems -- Issue 2. -- Issue 2: The internet is working fine... the ping is low the download speed is in the area that we pay for. However, it keeps randomly "disconnecting" and is very noticeable when playing any form of online game. I have been emailing them constantly over the last 3-4 days trying to explain to them what I mean but I was using the phrase "the internet disconnects on average about every 3.5 minutes" (side-note.... when it disconnects it disconnects for a few seconds, comes back and then disconnects again. It has been following this pattern for a few days now). I have attached a VIDEO of this problem below. They have been monitoring our internet and trying to see the disconnects that I am talking about but do not see a "disconnect" from the internet (Idk what they see...they just said that our internet isn't "going out"). Because I do not know the official language on what the problem is exactly it is hard for me to convey to them what exactly the problem is. If someone could please tell me what they believe is happening with my internet so that I could then explain it to my ISP I would greatly appreciate it. Video of Issue 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VpTtYR_-P4&feature=youtu.be -- As you can see it took about 4 minutes of game time until we encountered the problem. In the top right hand corner you can see "MS" which represents the ping. It shoots up to absurdly high numbers during these game freezes. tldr: Internet is losing connection/getting high ping spikes when playing online games (spans multiple games). I am trying to explain this issue to my ISP so that they can fix the issue but I do now know the correct "lingo". [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:30 PM PDT Any suggests on the most cost effective way of running your own domain. I'm not talking about using dyn dns and such, but rolling your own bind dns and webserver. It is cost effective to run this on something like amazon, or is it cheaper to run it a home on your own cheap hardware. Note: not in the US, and electricity is expensive (germany) [link] [comments] |
Asus rt-86u : Network cable is unplugged. Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:18 PM PDT I've been googling for solutions all nigh but I'm stumped: Brand new 86u out of the box. Wired and wireless LAN connects to router but router can't connect to Internet. "The network cable is unplugged". Connection is ethernet straight out of the wall; old router is just plug and go, pc can also connect directly to internet out of the wall. I'm using the same cables as the non-connecting 86u. WAN port on 86u works; it detects itself as plugged in if I loop WAN into a LAN port. Most importantly, if I plug the 86u wAN into the old router, and the old router to the wall, I get a working internet connection on the 86u LAN. Sounds like a mac adress issue, but spoofing doesn't seem to help (tried both old router mac and pc mac). I'm honestly stumped. Any ideas? I've turned everything off for the night, on the off chance something somewhere just needs to time out Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:17 PM PDT Friend of mine who is a bit technically challenged I think deleted all his contacts that were locally stored on the phone. What would be, if there is one, the best method to try and recover the contacts? Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2018 02:52 PM PDT I recently learned of MoCa and tested it out, but think I understood it incorrectly. My current objective is to get Ethernet to the (new) computer room. Presently, there is the living room, which runs I believe coax --> modem --> Router ----[ Into Cable, Console games etc... ] Our newly setup computer room is across the house. There was a coax outlet - and I was hoping it was somehow connected to the other coax, so I bought a MoCa adapter. Separate Coax from wall --> MoCa --> Ethernet to Switch --> PC However, when plugging it all in - it detects a network, but it's unknown and can't connect to the internet. In which case it would need it's own modem to 'translate' it so to speak right? Or is it just dead? Do y'all know what the best way to get internet from this line would be? Or am I in the entirely wrong ball park? I wouldn't mind setting up a second router, as this part of the house's wifi can be a little spotty. The line is right under my computer, and it would ideally connect to the switch to connect to 2-4 other computers. Sorry if any terminology is off, my networking is not very good [link] [comments] |
looking for a good router to use with modile tethering. Posted: 03 Jul 2018 02:23 PM PDT I currently use my sprint hotspot as my internet. I usb tether it to a mobile router for my home network. it is pretty terrible. Is there a legitimate router I could use for this purpose? I see that a lot of routers have usb ports but they don't state if they can accept a tethered cell phone. thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
Device to connect lan line to WiFi? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 01:03 PM PDT I have solar panels that send data over the internet to an energy monitor by connecting a lan line to my router. I moved my router downstairs and wanted to see if there was a device I can plug the lan line into and then connect that device to WiFi so the data can be sent, before I route the wire through the walls. Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2018 01:01 PM PDT Right off the bat, I apologize for any ignorance or dumb question posed here, and am infinitely grateful to the helpful folks of Reddit who devote their time to helping the lesser informed. -- For the past several months, I've been dealing with an inconsistent internet connection - without any sort of warning or triggering incident, my Router will lose connection to the internet. More often than not, this will happen when you leave the router on for a length of time - leaving the house for the day, going to bed and waking up, etc. Sometimes, the WiFi signal won't be found - other times, the WiFi signal is among the list of available networks, but will fail to connect or reject the (correct) password provided. 95% of the time, this is fixed by resetting the Router - turning it off, and turning it back on again. After the router boots up, it normally picks up the internet automatically without putting in a password. Note that the router connects via what I believe is a telephone jack in the wall - I am unaware of the location of the modem. The router was provided by the internet company, and is pretty straightforward - looks like this (Front view: http://img.olx.com.br/images/69/699609023616897.jpg). Can provide more pics if necessary. Doing some internal troubleshooting, I've narrowed this down to two possible culprits - power surges (I live in Brazil, and the electric system leaves much to be desired), and the router. I bought a nice power strip, which seems to have improved the situation, but not entirely (the intervals between resetting seem to be longer, if anything). Also, I've played a bit with manually setting the DNS / ISP, but that hasn't necessarily yielded any permanent fix. To try and remedy the situation, I bought a AC1900, and believe I have now successfully followed the steps to 'flash' it to a AC68U per the link attached (https://lazymocha.com/blog/2018/04/16/flash-t-mobile-cellspot-tm-ac1900-to-asus-rt-ac68u-p/). I've downloaded the latest ASUS firmware for the AC68. Note that I clicked all countries for the new CFE. Now, I'm curious if there are any next steps or things that I need to do to get my router connected to the network. When I plug in the input that I use on the existing router to the AC68, it doesn't seem to find an internet connection via the automatic connection via the ASUS software (connected by logging in via the IP). Are there other firmware / tools I need to use to pick up a signal and use the router? I've read about Merlin, but again, am not too acquainted with how to connect a router to the internet. Again, apologies in advance if any of this is completely off base or there's no way to use the AC68U with my existing connection. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Guest network on Access Point (old router) Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:04 PM PDT Hello all, I have recently run into an issue where i couldnt get WiFi to work on a guest network. I basically have a main router, which doesnt have the option for a guest network, and an old router turned into an access point, which does have a guest network feature. I set a static LAN IP on the old router and disabled DHCP. I then set up SSID 1 and SSID guest, because the main router doesnt have an option for guest network. I now realize (i may be wrong here) that because i have removed DHCP from the 2nd router, its firewall rules will no longer be seen by a device, so a guest network wouldnt actually be isolated. Is that correct? I wasnt able to connect to the guest network at all. Does anyone know if it is possible to create a guest network on an old router being used as an access point, or would i need an actual access point for this particular set up? I would like to keep this current set up as the main router is VDSL while the old one is ADSL, and its a cheap TP-Link [link] [comments] |
I’ve tried everything and cannot get my router working. Any tips? Or should I get a new one? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:03 PM PDT So, very novice networker here, as in I only do this stuff when a problem arises. I have a NETGEAR DM200 modem and a Nighthawk Router. Anyhow, my girlfriend decided to unplug everything and restart it because it was slow and now nothing works. I've looked up the easiest fixes, tried to power cycle, reset, nada. I've been on the NETGEARgenie, but I've been going in circles. It detects internet connection, then it doesn't. It asks me for my ISP username and password (which I called and got) will check the connection, then report back that it can't find a connection. Tells me to power cycle and make sure things are plugged in. I power cycle, it says internet is good, start the process over and then... well you get the idea. I'm going in circles. It's been almost a week since it was last working, NETGEAR won't help (6 month's free service is up) and I need the WiFi for work and school. Frankly if I don't fix it soon, I'll have to live in my local library to get things done. Reddit- should I try buying a new one? Any suggestions? I'm desperate! [link] [comments] |

Download speed is ~70 Mbps, but internet is incredibly slow overall. [Long] Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:26 AM PDT I've recently taken a new job in a new city and am temporarily moving in with my parents. I work from home, so fixing this issue is rather important to me. I've tried using the search function and have not had any luck. Details: Location: DFW, Texas Provider: Frontier Expected speed: ~70Mbs Router: Apple Airport Extreme Issue: My internet speed tests well even when the issue is happening but the actual connection is incredibly slow. Even just going to the speedtest site took 4 minutes to load despite the test showing such a high speed. I am often incapable of even loading texts posts on reddit, watching videos above 480p, or browsing basic sites. Beyond that, my job requires frequent video conferences and screen-sharing that uses a lot of bandwidth it is nearly impossible to get anything done most of the time. This issue is replicated across my desktop PC, my macbook pro, and my iphone HOWEVER, both of my parents also work from home (my dad and I work for the same company and his work is very similar to mine) and both claim they do not have any issues at all. Both of them are on wifi and I am wired directly in to our router. Issue persists regardless of wired or wireless. At my previous apartment, I had AT&T fiber and didn't have a single hiccup on any device. I have taken all 3 of my main machines to other peoples' homes/offices and have not been able to replicate the issue whatsoever. When gaming, my ping in many games will experience significant spikes until I restart my PC (i dont game on my other devices). Particularly in World of Warcraft, my ping logs indicate a 25ms connection to my local network but a ping of ~1140ms. I don't know how to interpret that, or if it is any sort of hint as to where the issue is stemming from. Additional details: Our household has an insane amount of devices connected. Myself, my brother, and both of my parents work from home. Here is a list of our respective connected devices. Those experiencing latency issues are marked with an [x] me: Windows 10 desktop PC with ASUS wireless card [x], Macbook Pro 15"[x], iphone x [x] brother1: Windows 7 Laptop PC [x], Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Nitendo Switch brother2: xbox one [x] mom: Thinkpad wireless PC on windows 7 USING VPN dad: Macbook Pro 15", iphone 7, iphone 5s ALL USING VPN Extra: Xbox downstairs, Apple TV[x], Roku smart TV[x] Troubleshooting: I started with a DNS switch, on to both 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1. Issues persisted. Restarting router and manually assigning an IP to my devices didn't work. I tried replicating the issues elsewhere, no luck replicating. Wireless vs wired does not seem to affect issue persistence or internet speed whatsoever. My parents both claim they do not have any issues, but I honestly just think they have grown accustomed to having garbage internet. I have not tried connecting through a personal VPN (i'm about to get one for work, so I may just wait). No apparent pattern as to when it slows/speeds up. At first I thought I was being throttled, but streaming services do not seem to be an issue. Reddit gets the worst of it. Thank you for reading. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated! Internet going down many times per day Posted: 02 Jul 2018 10:53 PM PDT Equipment: ASUS RT-AC66U, Arris SB6190 ISP: Cox Problem: Losing internet connection many times per day, sometimes for less than a minute, sometimes for longer periods of time. Looking in my router's system log, the majority of disconnects display this error message: "WAN Connection: ISP's DHCP did not function properly." with many more items thereafter. Connection usually comes back on it's own. Cox said that there will be outages for the next few months because they are working on lines. However, the problem gets a little weirder when you consider the affected computers. We have a modem connected to a router that acts as the main DHCP router, and connected to that is another router acting as an access point that runs into a connected house. In our house, with 3 users, only 2 users experience frequent daytime outages (like up to 30 times per day sometimes). My other roommate experiences the longer outages that occur mostly at night (perhaps the planned outages). The frequent, unplanned, daytime outages have been going on for as long as my roommates have lived here, roughly 7 years. Things I've tried: Assigning a static IP to all computers (the two mentioned earlier that go down more frequently were both on DHCP prior to yesterday), changing DHCP query frequency to normal from aggressive, turning off computer firewall, unplugging modem for 10 minutes to "reset lease" (?), disabling NAT acceleration, disabling "auto detect proxy settings" on PCs, SFC scan (desperation), resetting computer internet settings to default... That's all I can remember. I think I tried many more things. I read all this online and expect some of it to be wrong, so correct me if you feel like it. Edit: all computers are on a wired connection. Cables are all CAT5e. 2nd router goes to a connected house where like 5 other people live. I don't have access to the house but I was told the router was setup as an access point. Only our router does DHCP and also wifi (for my phone, to reduce data usage). Also, there have been 3 outages so far this morning, in less than an hour. I checked the modem and one of the up/down lights was off. [link] [comments] |
