How to create a gigabit local network that's connected to fast Ethernet router ?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 10:01 AM PDT

So basically I have 2 pc's with gigabit Ethernet ports but my local network is only 100 Mbps. my actual internet speed is 10 Mbps . the router I'm using is a TP -link TL-WR845N which has 100mbps Ethernet ports instead of gigabit ports. When I try to use OBS NDI plugin to stream over the network OBS alone uses up 100 Mbps network so I'm bottlenecked by the router. I don't need a gigabit router but I need gigabit speeds over the local network among the 2 pc's. How do I do it? will a network switch with gigabit ports help. I don't really need the wireless router I have. I just need a gigabit local network that's connected to the interned at megabit speeds

Looking for help with two routers with two subnets, trying to connect them.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 08:52 AM PDT

Hey all, I hope everyone's well today. I posted this over in a Ubiquiti sub but also figured I'd post here to see if anyone had any insight. It's not exactly home networking, but it's small scale and I feel the concepts are probably the same.

So my situation, I have two routers, one's a cellular gateway running OpenWRT. Connected to that is an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X (connected via the EdgeRouter's eth0; the EdgeRouter uses the cellular gateway for internet). The OpenWRT runs one 192.168.1.1/24 LAN and the EdgeRouter is running one 10.10.0.1/24 LAN. The OpenWRT only has one Ethernet port, but I have an application I'd like to be running on the 192.168.1.1/24 subnet (but connected to the EdgeRouter's eth3 port).

Where I run into a problem and need the application to be on the cellular routers subnet, the application associates with the cellular router based on MAC, so when that application sends an ARP it records its the MAC of its gateway and associates that way. I know getting a switch and putting that between OpenWRT router and EdgeRouter and connecting application to that would be probably the most expedient solution and save me some headaches, but I'm a bit limited as far as form factors and there may not be room for another piece of hardware (switch) in this instance.

I know this is a bit broad and I'm newer at this, but anyone have any insight on if this can be accomplished, and the best way to go about this? I've been researching as much as I can, but still a bit unfamiliar. Would I create a bridge and bridge eth0 and eth3? Is it possible to bridge WAN and LAN port on the Ubiquiti? And if so, I've read I would set an IP for the bridge, would I use the 192.168.1.1/24 for that IP? I've also read there can be performance issues with software bridging, but it's cellular data and wouldn't pass a ton of traffic so I don't think that'd matter too much. Or is there another way to set just the eth3 port on the EdgeRouter to function as a switch for eth0? Or passthrough or something like that? I've also tried reading on pseudo ethernet and proxy ARP, but not sure if that'd help.

Any help or insight I'd greatly appreciate, just looking for a bit of nudge in the right direction on what I should focus on. Thanks so much.

Home proxy server for content filtering

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:06 PM PDT

I'm looking to build a home proxy server to perform child friendly content filtering.

I'd ideally like to build this using a RPi due to low cost of hardware and low power consumption.

I am comfortable with RPi and Linux, so will happily roll my own solutions but struggling to find good information on software / config that would replicate the sort of filtering I've deployed at the office (Trustwave SWG).

I want to to be able to block by category rather than rely on white / black lists.

    All suggestions welcome

ATT Fiber: How to get rid of ATT RG.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:35 PM PDT

ATT requires me to use their RG/Modem. Currently there is a fiber cutoff device outside the house which has an ethernet output (I don't want to get rid of this). Then, there is an ATT RG/Modem which i want to get rid of. I just dont want it in my network, because it just slows everything down. No, I do not want to do a passthrough. How can I impersonate this thing by using my own hardware?

What is the best way to catch distant wifi signal in a home network?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 05:30 AM PDT

I've drawn simple scheme of the signal source and it's destination, so the distance and number of walls between source and destination can be seen. Never have I tried this, nor am I expert on this stuff, but I know of Wi-Fi boosters, some kind of antennas for router, but would like to hear your opinion and advice.

Unable to connect to Hikvision NVR while VPN'ing

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 06:01 PM PDT

So I'm using pfSense and using OpenVPN through it.

While I'm VPN'd I can access my entire network just fine, including viewing some other shitty IP cameras, but when I open the iVMS app (Hikvision viewer app), the connection fails or the playback is suuuuuuper choppy.

When connected to the Wi-Fi all the cameras come up in iVMS just fine.

Does anyone know where I should start looking to fix this?? It sounds like a bandwidth issue but even viewing one camera in iVMS seems to be too much, whereas my other IP cameras stream just fine.

Help with file copying grinding to a halt

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 11:21 AM PDT

I have 3 computers connected via ethernet switch. 1 being a storage server (windows 10 pc using drivepool).

Whenever we try to copy files over to the storage server it grinds to halt if it exceeds 1GB. So moving 1 700 MB file is fine but a folder with 3 files totaling 1.2 GB will fail.

On the flip side we can move/copy over any file off the file server to the other 2 computers no matter the size

Anyone has idea what could be the problem?

Download speed through router is slow

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 05:18 PM PDT

Hello ! I've been trying to figure this out all day so hopefully someone here can help.

I have a Linksys EA7500 router, and an Arris Touchstone SB6183 modem.

My internet provider is Spectrum, and I should be getting DL speeds around 100 Mbps. When I connect my laptop/PC directly to the modem, I get the speeds I should. When I connect through the router with a wire, I get 35-40 Mbps down. Even the wireless connection is a lot higher(about 80 Mbps). I have made sure I'm using cat 5e cables, so it should have no problem reaching 100 Mbps.

    Things I've tried :

    Factory reset the router

power cycle the modem and router

    Disable QoS type services

    Different cables

Any help is appreciated . Thank you!

    Drilling for 8+ Cables?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:18 PM PDT

So im running Cat6 in the house, and i've found the joist in the attic that's above the wall i'll be sending 8+ cables up through. However it got me thinking.....how big of a hole should I be drilling through the joist (Or whatever the wood at the top is called) and will that affect any sort of structural integrity?

Im using a 2-gang outlet: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001ANYYUS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s06?ie=UTF8&psc=1 To route the cables up from the floor below (from my switch/etc...)

Im mostly just concerned with how big of a hole I should be drilling through the wood....or should I drill multiple smaller holes (Which is more of a PITA).

Sidenote: Im looking for an item, it's a cable holder clip thing but it holds like a row of cables parallel to each other (I've only seen the "singular" holders.) Since I would ideally use these to keep it neat on the runs in the attic and keep the cables near each other.

    Swamped with options, need help!

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 11:56 AM PDT

I'm looking to help my mother replace a 8 to 10 year old Netgear wifi router with something that doesn't require being reset every 2 or 3 days to provide internet. There seem to be a lot of options out there now, most of which have an alarmingly high number of 1 star reviews on Amazon. Those reviews, plus budget constraints, are giving me analysis paralysis. Devices used are basically all wireless, and are listed below and could all be going at the same time:

    • Linux PC
    • 3 to 5 phones
    • Switch
    • 2 Rokus, the more advanced models
    • X-box
    • iPad

The options I've seen that seem to have the best reviews are:

    • Netgear Orbi router only
    • Ubiquiti AmpliFi router only
    • Ubiquiti ER-X + Ubiquiti AP

I'm mostly looking for reliability and longevity, and trying to keep it around $150 or less. ISP speeds are 100/25 or worse, not sure which package she has. Other more "normal" commercial wifi routers I've looked at seem to have even higher 1 star ratings despite some high praise I see for a few (ASUS and Nighthawk models). Any help parsing through the garbage would be appreciated!

Need help choosing a Mesh system

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 09:40 AM PDT

So i've looked into netgear orbi, google wifi, eero and ampliFi HD. The reviews all say different things and tackle the subject differently.

I've read reviews about the orbi being great when you're further away from it but when you're right up to it you don't get a connection. But its one of the fastest Mesh systems out there when it does work. I was leaning towards the orbi but now I'm unsure.

I'm looking for a mesh system that would be enough to cover 2,400sq/ft for my home. As well as have higher speeds than my shitty shaw hitron router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Velop iOS app keeps hanging at “Loading the setup experience”

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 03:37 PM PDT

I just got a Velop system and am trying to add in the second node. When I go to that part of the app, it just hangs at "Loding the setup experience." With the circle spinning.

Restarting the phone did nothing. Any thoughts? Is there another way to do this without the app?

    Thanks!

    Asus GT-AC5300 stable now

Cat7 Cable perfect test results, but no internet

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:30 PM PDT

I just finished running cat7 through my friend's attic.

I extended two existing cables. One of them goes to a switch and is split to four more cables which end in RJ45 modules.

The other one has simply been extended by 5m, with no switch or anything in-between.

I've tested all cables with a simple cable-tester and ive got perfect results. Lines 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 including the shielding are intact. But when I connect a laptop only the cables on the switch work. The directly extended cable is unable to connect my device with the internet.

I've run kilometres of cat7 and did hundreds of jacks by now - but I've never encountered this issue. Any ideas?

(On the other end all cables go into a cat5.e patchpanel, join together in another switch and into the router)

    New Apartment

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:15 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am moving into a new apartment and I'm currently looking at different WiFi packages. I wanted to try to get some recommendations on speed. I would ultimately like to save money but need a reliable connection.

A little bit about my usage:

I am a smart home geek and run things such as Philip's hue bulbs, nest thermostat, 2 Apple TVs, multiple smart plugs, 3 computers, and a smart tv. That being said other than the hue lights and some occasional Netflix, I don't rely on my WiFi all that much.

Right now the prices I have been quoted are:

    Xfinity: 150 mbps. ↓ 5 mbps.↑ - $55/month

    Amtech: 50 mbps. ⇅ - $40/month

    Amtech: 100 mbps. ⇅ - $60/month

My apartment provides complimentary 5 mbps. but I know that won't be sufficient for what I need. What would you guys recommend?

    Mikrotik "vs" Ubiquiti build

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:04 PM PDT

So I just spent an afternoon trying to figure what's best for my case, but since both target enterprise I can't quite get there. 3 floors, 150 square meters. 100/10 fiber. Not too savy on networking, don't mind spending the time to learn. Please elaborate: Mikrotik hex poe + hap ac, or Ubiquiti USG + UniFi lite, or Mikrotik hex poe + UniFi lite (being the most recommended for reasons I quite can't grasp yet). In addition, is there anything else required for either build?

Best home router with Time Machine support under $150

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 08:41 AM PDT

Typical home applications with two Netflix streams, lots of YouTube watching, an Xbox One, and no small kids. About 1500 sq ft coverage required, with more desired but not required (to reach the detached garage). We have a couple of nerds who can handle advanced features, but probably don't need much.

However, we'd like to backup two Macs to a shared Time Machine drive through the router if possible. (Yes, I know the performance and congestion issues this may cause, but it's better than continually arguing with my wife to "just plug the external drive into your MacBook once in a while!")

Looking at TP-Link, Asus, and Netgear options, but I'm open other brands. Thanks in advance for any help/guidance!

Issues with advanced tomato, Asus RT-AC66U and Alexa devices using a VPN

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 07:29 AM PDT

I just got an Asus RT-AC66U and got advancedtomato going great on it. The only issue I'm having is when trying to get my Alexa devices to work when running a VPN. I have a PIA VPN setup on the router right now, but for some reason when the VPN is running they won't connect to the internet. Pretty much everything else in my house works fine except the Alexa devices. I used the walkthrough here to set it up: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/guides/routers/tomato/tomato-advanced-firmware-setup.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? If I need to I can post somewhere else, just let me know.

Mesh WiFi without routing or DHCP?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2018 10:36 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Forgive the ignorance of this post. We're redoing some of our home network and I'm trying to figure out the best options for our somewhat unique setup.

We live on the campus of a school where I work (which makes for a nice commute!) and as such our internet comes via the school (there's literally an Ethernet cable running from the next closest building to the house where we live). The way the network is setup, all DHCP is handled at another router on the network not in our house.

Currently, I use a power line adapter to get the network to a WiFi router that is just running as a glorified switch / WiFi access point (no routing, firewall, DHCP, etc.). We're reconfiguring a lot of things at the house and I think maybe a different setup makes more sense.

The house is kind of big so I was wondering if a mesh WiFi setup would make sense, but my knowledge is limited on that. Is it possible to have a mesh network operate without it also trying to be the router for the network as well? I essentially just want a nice blanket of WiFi around the house that is just providing the network connection that comes in via the ethernet network line into the house.

Would mesh make sense? Would perhaps powerline WiFi make more sense in our situation? Any pointers on what system or equipment to go with?

    Thanks so much!

    Router to Unmanaged Switch issue

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 05:27 AM PDT

    Hi /r/HomeNetworking,

I recently bought a 16 port unmanaged switch (TL-SG1016) to add to my network. I have fiber coming into the house and the router that is supplied is a Calix GigaCenter 844GE-1 - docs - pdf

I plugged an Ethernet cable from the router into a port on the switch. I have another Ethernet cable that runs from the switch to my computer. However, I have no internet connection on my computer. Are there configuration changes I need to make on the router to make this work?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Bought an old house, I'm using a DLink AC2600HP but the Wifi signal doesn't seem to reach outside hardly.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 05:12 AM PDT

Even in my bedroom, which is the furthest room from the router, hardly gets a bar. All I did was plug and play the router as per the instructions, would there be something wrong with the connection or maybe the router itself? I feel like I ought to at least have good signal all throughout the house with this router.
