Hey guys, just noticed those two price drops and thought I would give you heads up, For those looking for a powerful gaming laptop around 1500~.

The Acer Predator 17 and Acer Predator 15 Both come with very similar specs, so I am going to list them below, just know that the only differnce is screen size.

    • 7th Generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ (more than enough if your main usage is gaming, but if you are more concerned about CPU intensive work then looking for an 8th gen is worth the investment).
    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 with 8 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM (which is more than enough for most modern games to run on ultra/high), and a great find for those price ranges(the 17 inch deal is better though).

    • 16GB DDR4 Memory, 256GB SSD RAID 0, 1TB HDD (which I consider to be the perfect combination for a gaming laptop, average sized SSD for OS and your favorite game or two, and big HDD storage for your music, family photos/videos, and some less favorite/finished games, and plenty of ram for smooth multitasking.

    • Build quality is pretty good, and great heat management.

If you want other options, or help in general with laptop selection, I would recommend that you check my list of best gaming and college laptop to compare it with similar options. also check out What to avoid when you are buying a new laptop.

15.6 Inch, Ideally Thinner College/ Gaming Laptop (~$1500 or below)

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:04 AM PDT

Warning: I Kinda Have Very Little Clue As To What I'm Talking About. Go Easy On Me.

I have been looking around a good amount for laptops and have come to the consensus for myself that I'm pretty sure I'm an idiot and I expect too much. I had my eye on the Razer Blade series for a while as their size really appealed to me. The Razer Blade Pro v2 looked really good to me for a little (it was selling refurbished for ~$1600 https://www.razer.com/gaming-laptops/refurbished-razer-blade-pro-v2-fhd)

But that went back up to ~$2000 shortly after I had been considering the purchase. The most attractive parts of this laptop to me was the sheer power and the design philosophy which was for the most part: make it thin, make it powerful, design in a more minimalist way.

Something that was more of a turn off was that the laptop was 17.3 inches. That doesn't seem too awful unless I rationalize with the fact that I'm probably going to be carrying around a laptop a lot and the last thing I need is that extra size. This is where the issue comes in.. I'm trying to look for a laptop that is teetering around:

Size: 15.6 inches, 1 inch thickness (or less)

CPU: minimum high end sky lake or equivalent

GPU: Ideally a desktop card. GTX 1050 or 1060, 1070 seems fully unrealistic.

Memory: Flexible. Ideally 16 gigs. Not a deal breaker

HDD/SSD: 1TB minimum, SSD is just an added bonus.

I fully realize I'm probably asking something that just isn't realistic or on the market. But the ideal situation is basically a dumbed-down razer blade, or something along the lines of a ROG laptop. It would be really nice if the display was 120hz with freesync/gsync depending on the card, but that's more down to the model. (at this point I'm just naming off things that are very nice to have in general)

Anyway, the question stands.. what is the closest thing you all have seen to what I'm looking for? As far as I'm concerned at this point, is something that's sizable, durable and up to date enough to the point where I won't have to worry about replacing for 5 years. Most of what I listed off is purely based off of me assuming these specs will last me a good chunk of time before I'll even have to consider purchasing a new laptop. With that being said, I don't know quite as much about laptops and computers as i would like. (thus why i'm here) So everything I listed off in terms of specs was more of a guess than a necessity, and can be flexible if most points are met. But at it's minimum I would like it to be:

15.6 inch, sleek and minimalist design (not some overly geometric shit that looks like it's straight out of transformers), something that would last through a transient lifestyle of regular gaming and school work and a life span that would fit that life style for roughly 5 years if properly managed.

    Thanks for your time.

Help me pick a decent laptop under 350$

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:37 AM PDT

-Budget and country- less than 600BGN, Bulgaria -Form factor, battery, specs- I don't need a 2 in 1. Battery life is not important. I want good specs for the money. -Weight and thinness- Would like something under 5lbs -OS- Windows -Screen size- Not important but nothing too small. HD. -Programs- Nothing special- everyday web browsing, microsoft office -Games- I don't plan on using it for games -Requirements- Very good build quality, good keyboard, SSD, decent CPU, 4gb ram or more, good cooling, 720p or 1080p screen, sd card reader, two or more USB ports, HDMI/VGA, maybe an optical drive, good WiFI reception. -Finishing thoughts- I need a laptop that can last 5+ years without falling apart. My Acer Aspire 5732ZG became just too expensive to maintain- the webcam broke and had to be replaced, then the screen broke, the keyboard was't registering keystrokes from time to time, some keys came off and finally the battery died and the laptop just won't power on anymore. Please tell me if I'm asking too much for the price. -Forgot to add something- Is there a way I can use my old laptop without changing the battery?

    Laptop for editing and gaming

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:01 AM PDT

Need suggestions for a laptop that has at least mx150, an okay ips panel, and is good for editing and casual gaming.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 600-750 USD, USA california

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good for graphics design, video editing, and casual gaming

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches preferably

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere. For gaming, pcsx2 and maybe some AAA games

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Medium is okay, high would be pleasing. Playabe fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A laptop with good thermals, something that wont overheat due to bad design choice. MX150, 960M, anything similar or better. IPS panel At least i5

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm broke

[US] $1200-$1400, Work/Gaming laptop, probably purchasing today.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:35 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

US 1200-1400. Would prefer lower end so I can get an extended warranty, but feel free to list whatever, even a little over.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    BEST specifications

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    17, but "change my mind"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Some gaming.

Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Remote Desktop Firefox with 5+ tabs open that seem to be resource heavy usually.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

High settings, 60FPS Simulations, Rust, Planet Coaster, Emulators

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      Reliable Build Quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This laptop will get used 8-12 hours a day. Open and closed a lot, some traveling. I'm sick of hinges breaking, or the slightest drop/bump breaking something.

Will be using Remote Desktop with usually Skype and photoshop running in the background with Firefox open and using plenty of tabs.

Not too many AAA games, I think the 1060 will be enough but feel free to recommend something better if it fits in other areas and the price is right.

I would also like to have 2 displays hooked up to it, I have dual 23.6 1080p displays. Especially for working. Can I also leave the laptop screen on? I'm constantly jumping back and forth. Not sure if the extra displays have a big impact on performance.

Looking for an 7700HQ. I think I might like the new gens, but not sure if I require it. There's no CAD or video editing.

To the affiliate link guys, I will gladly use your links, or even message you if I find something else to use your link if you can help out. I've been an affiliate manager for years and totally support it and appreciate your time.

Coding / VERY light photo editing

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:29 AM PDT

    Hi!

I'm trying to decide on a decent laptop for coding on the side, and learning outside of my normal 9-5. Currently the top contender is a Surface Laptop (currently ~$1022.99 for the 13.5", i5 7th gen, 256gb ssd model). My absolute budget is $1100.

Any other recommendations before pulling the trigger? I do not want something large/bulky as I will literally never play a game or edit a video on this machine.

    Gaming laptop, 15", US, $1500

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:59 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: U.S. $1,500. I'm ok going over a little bit, but I'd rather not.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't want 2 in 1. Battery life is useful, but not super important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Preferably around 5 lbs or less. Nothing Super bulky.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 or 15 inches, preferrably with 120 or 144Hz

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be gaming, but am also using it for everyday school use.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't usually play anything super intensive, as I mainly play Rocket League. That being said, I would like to be able to run any games at reasonable settings while maintaining 60 FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I've got nothing specific here.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. A friend did recommend I get a laptop with Thunderbolt 3 compatability, and that seems logical. This isn't necessary, but I would love to here somebody else's opinion on it's usefullness.

I've done a bit of research on my own, but am curious to see what you guys recommend. The two that I am currently interested in are:

    • MSI GP Series GP63 Leopard-428

Looking for work/gaming laptop. Dell G7 8750 a good choice?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:31 PM PDT

Looking at a new laptop for work/gaming. Ideally 15 inch and portability/low weight would be nice but I don't carry my laptop around too much so it would just be a bonus.

I initially narrowed it down to either a G7 8750 or XPS 15.

My budget is approximately 1300 but I can be flexible with that. I'm heavily leaning towards a G7 because it seems like it's just cheaper than the XPS for an equivalent build. I was specifically looking at this G7 for 1300 which is in comparison to the XPS 15 for 1500 with 16gb RAM.

I'm not interested in a touch screen, and while I love the screen quality of the XPS, I don't do photo or video work so it's a luxury more than a necessity. Is there anything else I'm missing in terms of the advantages of the XPS 15 that should make me change my mind? Or perhaps any equivalent models I should also be taking a look at?

Suggestion for a budget gaming laptop

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:47 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 600-850 Euros, Germany

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money, good display, good sound,

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferrable

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I am working with Unity 3D and Visual Studio, plus I also like to play the occasional AAA title. (Also huge Bethesda fan, hoping to be able to run the upcoming Fallout 76 and TES 6 titles)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Medium-high for newest title is fine, but FPS is more important, would like to keep that number atleast at 60.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Apart from the components working well together, no.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would consider increasing my budget by up to 1000 euros but only if it's absolutely necessary. Kinda had bad experience with Acer laptops so not really keen on buying another one. Looking to buy my first Linux laptop

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:57 AM PDT

I have ranked my priority in buying my first Linux laptop:

    1. Linux compatible (obviously).
    2. Light weight.
    3. Cheap. I'm looking at <1000 USD.
    4. Long battery.
    5. Pre-installed Linux (because this will be my first time using Linux and I don't want to give me a hard time carefully trying to not mess up the installing).

I will use this laptop for learning coding at university level. It would be great if it can last me later on at work too, but that's not important. Thank you.

And I couldn't care less about touch screen, jeez.

    2 in 1 for a college student

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:12 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** 800USD USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2 in 1 is optimal and a good battery life would be nice but doesn't have to be excellent

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not essential

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** N/A

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** This will mainly be used for carrying around to class so a solid build would be good and a not unbearable keyboard

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I am going to be bringing a PC to the school so this will mainly be used for word processing in class, studying, web browsing. Because of this performance isn't essential to me.

Fairly computer illiterate, looking for a decent laptop for general use and light gaming

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:10 PM PDT

I'm currently using an HP Revolve. I've had it forever, and it was a good computer to get me through school. It's been crapping out on me, and I'm looking for a replacement that doesn't need to be as portable and has the potential for decent gaming.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1200 USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is pretty important. Mostly concerned about storage space.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't really matter, I probably won't be traveling with it too much.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I like Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Probably around 15-16, but I'm ok with bigger.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm a hobby photographer, but a lazy one. So mostly I just take pictures and store them on my computer. I don't game too much, mostly because my current laptop can't handle it, but I'd like to get into it more.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I play embarrassing amounts of the Sims 4. Looking into playing Civ and will probably buy the new Elder Scrolls game whenever it comes out.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Don't need anything too fussy.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've only ever used HP computers so I'm the most comfortable with them. I have been looking into Dell as well. I don't want anything that looks too much like a gaming computer. I have a couple laptops in mind, and I'd love your opinions.

HP Envy Touch Screen I've heard this one is good for photo editing, and I like that it has 1T of storage. Don't think it will be excellent for gaming however. I don't mind the 17in screen necessarily, but it does seem a bit big.

Dell Inspiron 2 and 1 Touch Screen

The guy at Best Buy recommended this one to me when he saw me looking at the HP. I do really like how much storage it has. The laptop I currently have is a 2 and 1, and I never use the tablet function, so I don't know if it's worth purchasing. Consumer Reports said it was fast and pretty good for gaming.

Dell G7 15 I've seen this one crop up a lot on this sub. It seems like a good price for a good gaming computer. I like the blue lighting even though I don't usually like the gaming style of laptop. I'm worried about it not being as functional for the amount of photos and documents that I usually store on my computer.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

    • Ability to run Solidworks

I also have a couple preferences:

    Macbook or PC for college?

Hello, I want to get a laptop for somewhere around 1000 dollars. When I go into college, I plan on majoring in Game Design and communications. Right now, I want to learn to code python. What are your suggestions.

For PCs, I was looking into a surface book 2 or an hp spectre x360. I am completely unaware of what I should get. Someone please help me.

[SQ]Is MSI GS60 6qe Ghost Pro is still worth to buy?

Someone offered me GS60 6QE Ghost Pro for 800usd. I came from Apple Ecosystem and this will be my first time to try Windows machine. I'm just wondering if the deal that I get is worth it or should I look for other laptop model? If yes, any recommendations? Thank you.

    Airline compatible (watts) laptop recommendation?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 01:36 PM PDT

I have an Alienware M14X that I like pretty well, but I realized that my 150W power requirement for that will trip airline seat power outlets. I think most airlines cap their outlets at around 75W, although I've heard some people say they can run 100W laptops in some diminished capacity.

I also fly for a living, and am always carrying my laptop with me, so I wouldn't be adverse to carrying something a bit slimmer and with better battery life than the M14X. We have a 15 hour flight to Australia coming up later this year, and I'd love to have a laptop that I can charge from the Boeing 787 seat outlets.

I mostly use it for writing, some photo editing, and some light gaming. Anyone have any suggestions on something that will tick off some of those boxes? I'm not much interested in a touch screen - I prefer to use a mouse, definitely need USB ports, and definitely need something Windows based. An SD card reader would be a bonus.

Budget is $1500 or less-ish...(United States)

I don't know much about Surface Pros or stuff like that

Any thoughts, recommendations, or things I haven't considered? Thanks!

Laptop for an 8th grade graduation gift. Help?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:24 AM PDT

    Hi, Reddit!

I'm looking for a laptop to give my stepdaughter as she starts high school this Fall. We're pretty open as far as screen size. I'm also open to refurbished (if it's from a good source). She'll mostly use it for normal high school stuff like word processing, internet, etc, but I'd also really like it if it at least had enough power to run Sims 4.

I personally have a Lenovo and I really like it, but I'm open to other suggestions.

We are wanting to stay around $600 for this machine.

    Thank you!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~ $600, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2-in-1

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not super important, but the sleeker the better.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Sims 4

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't know the answer to this.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touchscreen would be amazing.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Refurbished is fine, though new would be better.

    Please help a casual gamer

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:03 PM PDT

Hello, I love playing games like Fortnite and The Sims 4 on a daily basis, and I sometimes play cod campaign and assassin's creed. I reaaaaly love the Razer Blade stealth 13" (I need a portable one for work) and I want it but I cannot afford the core. I know the Sims will but will Fortnite hit 60fps on low settings without the razer core?

ALSO, If I manage to buy The New Razer Blade 15" 60hz (the bad one), will it play the above games and maybe Elder Scrolls Online as well? Is 60hz enough for a casual gamer?

Used Lenovo ideapad u530 touch for $250 vs new ASUS Vivobook F510UA for $509

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:21 PM PDT

So my brother has the lenovo (and truthfully it's been sitting in a box for months, and I dug it out to see what it's all about) and he wants money for it if I'm going to use it.

Now I've been planning on getting an ASUS vivobook F510UA from Amazon sometime in the next month or two.

So for the specs, which is a better deal? The Lenovo is cheaper, but it's a worse laptop specs wise

    Any advice?
