Updating from 1709 to 1803 is rotten Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:48 PM PDT ...in the fact that it ruined my installation. Thanks Microsoft. I have the pro version of Windows 10 and defered updates in group policy, and just recently my 1709 install started acting up and stuttering with 100% CPU usage. Decided to update to 1803 as a hope to maybe get fixes. Well it just broke my install. Reinstalling I guess. Around 6TB of games to redownload. Yay. [link] [comments]

Anybody know any apps for moving Windows and other operating systems to a new disk? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:36 PM PDT I need to clone my installation of Windows 10 from one disk to another disk inside the same PC and since I'm also setting up my first linux based cloud backup server for home on Linux I figured I'd see what other stuff I could do. I've used and even paid for Easeus Todo Backup in the past but it's subscription based. I'm open to paying a one time fee for a thing but I don't like subscription based software especially for stuff that I use rarely and I especially like stuff when it's open source. Important things I'm looking for:
Must be able to handle large cloning or backup jobs. My desktop server has 6 terabytes and I'll be backing up 3 of those terabytes externally. I had to reimage my laptop this weekend and someone mentioned to me a piece of software that started with an Lin I think but I forget what it's called. Also... if this is something I could just as easily do with a bash or cmd script, please let me know. I'm a designer who has been learning code and while I've grown up fairly tech savvy with GUI stuff, I never learned the CLI until recently. I want something as simple as unobtrusive as possible, so if that's really simple to do with command line I'd love to know! [link] [comments]
Windows 8.1 Wallpaper slideshow for one monitor only? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:25 PM PDT I want windows 8.1 to cycle through desktop backgrounds but for my secondary monitor only, while my main monitor has a static background. Is there a way to do this? [link] [comments]
Long-term use summary of Windows 7 on "unsupported" hardware. (Spoiler: It depends) Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:53 PM PDT Since 7 on Kaby Lake is coming to an end for me, I felt it was appropriate to clear the air. As far as I can tell, there are no long-term reviews for 7 on unsupported hardware that take anything other than stability into account. For a better development and gaming environment for one game (it's important to me, okay?) I was kinda cornered into putting Windows 7 on my laptop. After deciding to go back to uni for another degree I will need to put 10 back on this laptop, so I've purchased an old Optiplex to continue my gaming and development for that game. Relevant Specs:
1. StabilityWindows 7 is only as stable as the drivers it's using, third party or generic Microsoft drivers alike. With that said I have had no blue screens, no freezes, no crashes. Any issues I've had with specific drivers or devices appear to be issues with the driver developer as all the problems I've encountered on this specific laptop were also on Windows 10, such as Waves MaxxAudio stereo not kicking in from a reboot until I've played back YouTube or Music or something and skipped around the video/audio. If stability is a concern for you, your best bet is to try it yourself. We've all had the rundown of how to slipstream proper drivers into a Windows 7 installation ISO, or at least those of us who have considered going back. 2. PerformanceI hear so many myths about Windows 7 performing better than 10. It uses less resources, but that doesn't make it inherently better. Windows 10 is a great product with fantastic resource management that's only getting better as time goes on. Windows 7 does not perform as well as 10. There are issues with the desktop as well, such as screen tearing in videos if you'e not using Aero. Yes, the screen tearing is in 30 fps videos too. I've noticed it in some games as well, indicating the iGPU (what my NVIDIA GPU passes through to reach the display) is not synchronized at all times like it should be. 3. TempsEven after undervolting, my CPU and GPU idle at a whopping 55 to 60 degrees. For comparison, idle temps in Linux and Windows 10 are barely above 30. Load temps are still the same, capping out at around 70 degrees. While this is totally safe for your CPU and poses no threat, it's terrible on battery life. I suspect Windows 7 is not managing voltages with newer Intel and NVIDIA chips correctly. I never saw a study on this before and I was shocked to see there's pretty much nothing I can do about it aside from going to Windows 10. 4. ConclusionUnless you know for sure an important task can not be completed on Windows 10, I do not recommend downgrading to Windows 7. I prefer 7 over 10 the same way I prefer Windows XP over 7, but 7 is reaching the age of obsolescence. It's already obsolete in my school environment, it's reaching end of life next year, and it's just old. While there are no real hardware incompatibilities and these problems are from driver manufacturers making inferior products, sometimes on purpose, Windows 7 as an environment is not going to be usable in the very near future. When Windows 8 reaches end of life in January 2023, I suspect nearly all developers will stop developing for those systems. The Windows 10 operating system is so much different under the hood and constantly evolving. It supports ARM systems now indicating the NT kernel has been completely overhauled. In layman's terms, older Windows systems will likely be to 10 as DOS is to Windows in the near future. January 2023 is only four and a half years away. [link] [comments]
How much does info does Microsoft collect if I don't have a Microsoft account? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 02:54 PM PDT With Windows 10, I bypass logging in with a MS account and choose to create only local accounts (the old fashioned way). Also, I tend to disable any telemetry data collection settings that I can find. Of course there's still "unknown" data that can still be sent to MS. I noticed that there's a couple of settings that I don't have access to because I'm not logged in with a Microsoft account. Notably, cortana and inking settings. Since I'm using this account method, does this limit the amount/type of data that is collected and stored at MS? [link] [comments]
Help plez Windows not activated? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 09:07 AM PDT I upgraded my pc to windows 10 a couple years ago. Now a watermark pops up in the bottom right hand corner that goes over anything my browser/games etc. It says "activate windows go to settings" and I go to settings and it says my product key is invalid. If I restart my computer it usually fixes it for a while. [link] [comments]
It's possible to install windows in a Linux partition style? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:10 AM PDT I hope the title it's not confusing. What I want is to know if I can make 2 partitions when installing Windows, one for the system and other for the libraries (documents, images, music, etc)/user folders/files in general, so when I need to format, upgrade or something I just need to format the system partition and not all the HDD, like Linux with the "/" and "/home" partitions PD: I don't know if "help" is the correct flair for this question so if it's wrong I'll appreciate that you tell me which one is the correct to change the flair EDIT: I know Linux use EXT4 file system and Windows NTFS, the file system isn't what I want to change, I want to have 2 NTFS partitions, one with the Operating System (Windows) and other for the user files and folders but this one recognised by all the programs, by example: in the second partition I have my downloads folder, I open Chrome (installed in the first partition) and download something then I can see the file in the file manager in my respective user downloads folder [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Jul 2018 04:51 AM PDT So I don't know what subreddit to post in but I figured I would get more help here than r/hacking. So I'm trying to fix a laptop that's going through many different crashes and such. I can't even log in to wipe it properly and fix it. I'm stuck at the generic windows 7 login screen. I can't log in normally since it's saying "admin user blocked blah blah". But! I remember that if you made the laptop or computer crash (unplug or remove the battery) you could start it in a way that the computer would create an error report. From there you could open the system files via notepad and rename the sticky keys file to trigger the CMD instead. From there I could make a new user(hopefully) and do a hard wipe of the laptop. The issue is I don't remember the exact steps to do so. If any of you know this trick can you fill me on the steps I'm missing? If not I'll just erase this post so it doesn't fill the subreddit with junk. Thanks! PS: if you know another way I could fix this laptop let me know. [link] [comments]
Windows 7 pro. Any way to remain working on the same program while others open? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:59 AM PDT I have to start a ton of programs in the morning and each one has multiple stages of opening and will switch while I'm working in another. Is there any way to keep working on the active program while others open in the background? I don't want to keep them on top all the time only when working on it. [link] [comments]
(Win 10 Setup) There was a problem running this tool Posted: 03 Jul 2018 04:32 AM PDT I need to install Windows 10 on one of my older laptops (32-bit) and when i tried getting the Windows 10 Setup on a USB Stick i've got a error saying "There was a problem running this tool" (lower part->) "We're not sure what happened, but we're unable to run this tool on your PC. If you continue experiencing problems, reference the error code when contacting customer support. Error code: 0x80080005 - 0x90017" The PC that i'm using to make the Windows 10 USB Stick was made to run the latest version of Windows 10 so i'm pretty sure it's not a compatibility issue, the Stick is a 7 GB Kingston USB Stick that i recovered since it was extremely corrupted and broken before but now it works just fine since i installed Android x86 with it. Thanks for reading and if you know how to fix this please reply to this post. [link] [comments]
Windows 7 Pro Keeps "Waking Up" During Sleep and Hibernate Mode Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:43 AM PDT I've changed the power settings, wake timer and put check for Updates to the middle of Wednesday instead of daily at 2AM. Yet nothing is stopping my computer light from staying off. Shutoff Hybrid Sleep too. I've had the computer need a hard reboot just to let me use the mouse and keyboard. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:00 AM PDT I have been trying to do a clean install of Windows 7 on my computer, but it constantly gets stuck at 85% when expanding windows files. I've looked around for possible solutions to the problem, but nothing seems to have worked so far. They included: cleaning the disk, changing RAM in the computer. After a while of being stuck on 85%, an error message comes up (0x80070017) saying that there are files missing, however, the install disk has worked before. Is there anything you can recommend I do? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:59 AM PDT Hi reddit, I could use some help. Basically I have windows 10 on my hard drive and everything was fine for months until yesterday I got blue screen of death as I booted it up. I didn't think much of it, maybe it was a virus or something so restarted, windows booted up and I scanned the whole computer with Windows Defender. Nothing was detected. So I carried on using it. (Don't know if this is relevant but I used sleep quite often because I wasn't much using the computer.) On the next start up, suddenly the start up recovery is starting and trying to fix errors. It was unable to. So I went into command prompt and checked and all my files were gone on the current partition. I started freaking out because I had important documents there but turns out, for some reason windowd assigned recovery partition it made as a drive "C:" and windows with all my stuff in drive "E:" I tried using start up recovery, reinstalling windows with option to keep files, system restore but all ended up giving me errors. I also used partdisk which confired that my C drive is only like 300mb and my E drive is my actual drive. Tried to changing it using this, it says the letters were assigned but nothing changed. I tried using disk management too but it won't start. Any ideas? Tldr: my windows changed recovery partition as a drive "C" and the partition with my windows and files is now in drive "E". Any ideas how to reverse that? [link] [comments]
Do sound controllers (Win7) make a difference to audio quality? Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:42 AM PDT I have two questions. As the title says, I uninstalled all of the Realtek stuff off of my PC because I just got a new headset, wanted to make sure everything was up to date. Should I reinstall the drivers? Will they affect the audio's quality? And if so, can I get a link to them? I have the ALC887 codec from Realtek on my mobo. What does the selection in Playback Devices>Speakers>Properties>Advanced do to the audio? I see they are for "sample rate" and "bit depth." Will this affect audio/mic quality at all? The headset is from HyperX. Thanks [link] [comments]
Question about web proxy prompts Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:41 AM PDT So I just started work for a company that uses the local government's network for internet access. (wonderful) The company has their own AD domain. When they log into their computer they use one login, and then when they access the internet they have to login to a proxy with a separate government login. The problem is when the prompt comes up, by default it often puts in our company domain/username. The user has to click 'Other User" and type in the govt domain-username/password. In a lot of cases they don't notice the username is wrong, just try typing in the password, and then call us when it doesn't work. Any suggestions on how to deal with this to make it easier for the users? They have a mixture of W7 and W10 computers. Thank you! [link] [comments]
After installing the recent update, my microphone half works Posted: 03 Jul 2018 01:07 AM PDT Updated: My microphone picks up all input when I listen to the playback on the Sound Mixer, but does not work on any applications like Discord/Skype/other in-app sound input services. For example, when doing a mic test on skype with the Echo service not, it tells me that Skype cannot access the sound card which is weird since it works on the sound mixer. All of this happened after I did a recent Windows Update. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
