    College laptop for $700

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 09:25 PM PDT

    • Total Budget and country of purchase: $700 (Would be willing to go above if seems fit) USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: Good Battery Life as well as Specs
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?: I would prefer it to be light/thin
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux: Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A: No more than 15.6 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: Gaming would be a plus. Games such as Overwatch, CS:GO, Rust, R6S
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?: Games such as Overwatch, CS:GO, Rust, R6S, 40-60 fps (720p or 1080p)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?: Good keyboard, and touchpad**
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion: Again, gaming would be a plus, and I would be willing to go above the price just a bit if needed, would prefer it to be thin/lightweight and minimalist in look, (Nothing like the Nitro 5 that screams "Gamer"). But seeing as ~700 is not much for what I'm asking for, I would like a simplistic laptop that will get the job done, something like the lenovo yoga 720

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:05 AM PDT

Looking for a college laptop for computer science that can also do some gaming (USA $1000-$1500)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:22 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm in the USA, and my budget is between $1000-$1500

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I am looking for good battery life and best specifications for the money. I don't need a 2 in 1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness are pretty important. I need to be able to easily carry it around campus. Doesn't have to be super thin, but I don't want a bulky gaming sized one.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13 and 15 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I am not sure what programs I am going to be using as far as computer science goes, but I am looking to do some light gaming such as Portal/Portal 2, Hand of Fate, Bioshock.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See answer above for games. I am looking for medium to high settings at 60 fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent keyboard, good build quality, USB 2.0/3.0 ports and a headphone jack. I don't want a touchpad with buttons. Media keys. Also a backlit keyboard would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't want any flashy things such as leds on the outside. I know most laptops don't have this, but I thought I would mention it.

    College Laptop Recommendation (Preferably Gaming)

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:05 AM PDT

    • Total Budget and country of purchase: Upper Limit of $1400 Canadian. Canada
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: Good battery life and specs
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?: Not an immediate concern of mine
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux: Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A: 15.6 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: primarily Gaming on the down low. I'm looking at Triple A titles that range from stuff like Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Final Fantasy 15 and other RPG games.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?: See above for the games. Medium to high at 1080p, hitting as close to 60fps.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?: good build quality (sturdy build with minimal flex on the screen)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion: I was considering getting a Dell G5 Gaming laptop in Black. The two questions I would like to pose is would a gaming laptop feel out of place in a college setting (i.e would getting a gaming laptop for college be a mistake? how would it last in a typical day to day routine? etc) as well as how future-proof the laptop is? Will it still be able to hold its own 4 to 5 maybe even 6 or 7 years down the line?

    Laptop for an architecture student

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:42 AM PDT

My cousin needs a new laptop as she is about to enrol in an architecture program.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    Germany, ~€2000

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

2-in-1 might come in handy, battery life is important.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Fairly. I asked her what her needs would be and the answer was "something thin and light, also white is preferable.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    15"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

She is going to study architecture, so probably lots of CAD

    • ** Other thoughts **

After looking around, the Dell XPS 15 (i7-8750H, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, GTX 1050Ti 4 GB GDDR5) seems like it would be a good choice for her but it might be an overkill. My limited knowledge on architecture software leads me to believe it's GPU and CPU intensive so she'd need something powerful enough to get her through her degree. The one thing I can't decide is if she needs the UHD screen. How important is resolution to architecture students? Is digital sketching a norm or necessary?

I have looked into the Surface line, but it's crazy expensive to get a similar configuration. I have no clue what other brands and models are good these days so any suggestions are more than welcome.

    Edit: Formatting.

    ~800, USA, list provided

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:24 AM PDT

I made a post yesterday and got some suggestions and idea of the market.

I continued the search though and will provide a list of Amazon links, with some laptops. I would like your input.

Furthermore, is the 8th gen i7 too much for my needs? Is the i5 just fine? Should I look for an i5 with better GPU for example?

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      • ~800$, USA, Minessota
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
      • Best specifications for the money matter to me the most. I don't need it to be a tablet or have a touchscreen.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      • Would prefer something thin. Not your average Dell or HP.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      • The cheapest, I have a genuine Windows 10 key so I don't mind it being with no OS or Linux.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      • N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • Some photoshop/illustrator and if possible CS:GO
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • CS:GO in average settings
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • Good touchpad, 8th gen Intel CPU, dedicated GPU, HDD is fine, I can change it with an SSD I already have.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Let's refer to the laptops by "Link Number" because names and codes are too complicated.

    Once again, thank you

Need a laptop to last all through college

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 08:24 PM PDT

    Here's my old laptop: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-hp-15-n278sa-amd-a8-4555m-16ghz-radeon-hd7600g-gpu-8gb-ram-1tb-hdd-dvdrw-hdmi-win-81-grade-aplus

It wasn't a bad laptop, it just got a little slower about 3 years after purchase and the battery life suffered.

Total budget and country of purchase: $400-$750, United States

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.: Just want it to be reliable for traveling to and from class, and a long battery life to last me 6+ hours

How important is weight and thinness to you? Lighter/Thinner is better

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Doesn't matter

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Not planning on doing any gaming. I use google drive/docs/slides/sheets, some Microsoft platforms, and music making programs such as Musescore and Finale.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Maybe a light up keyboard? The one that has the backlight and can change colors. Not important but I always wanted one lol

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Just something that is better than my old laptop. I was big into gaming in my high school years and games took up a lot of space and made my laptop slow. Also, battery was a big problem for my old laptop; the battery life is about 1 hour which is no bueno. I want my new laptop to last me all four years and maybe more if i get into professional school. I prefer portability as long as it does not sacrifice and specs.

Acer Aspire 3 vs Acer Aspire E15

Do not need a touch screen! Hopefully something fairly well built that will last 2-3 years. Thanks!

Best <$2500 laptop for graduate school

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:43 PM PDT

I am a graduate student in biomedical engineering and recently won an academic fellowship that includes a $2500 allowance for a new computer. I am constantly moving around and am certain that I want a laptop. Additionally, I do not keep any of the money remaining after I purchase a laptop, so I am not incentivized to cheap out or go significantly under the $2500 allowance. Therefore, my goal is to buy a laptop for just around $2000 (to cover tax and a warranty) that will best suit my needs. My needs will include analyzing tens of millions of data points and writing programs to perform basic statistical tests and linear/nonlinear regressions while running other programs in parallel. However, most of the laptops I keep seeing in reviews within the ~$2000 price range are gaming laptops with beastly graphics cards (e.g. the Gigabyte Aero 15x, MSI gs65, etc.). While I think it would be awesome to be able to play high-quality graphics games and enjoy gaming, I would find it slightly irresponsible of me to buy a "gaming" laptop for a fellowship intended to fund scientific research. My question, then, is: Are gaming laptops also the best laptops in general for general use? If not, why do I find that the best "business use" laptops in the price range (e.g. Lenovo Thinkpad X1) seem to have comparable to slightly-worse specs (the lenovo thinkpad x1 for example seems to be missing the hexacore processor that the Aero 15x has and does not have a dedicated graphics card). What is being sacrificed in the transition from $2500 "business" laptop to $2500 "gaming" laptop? Thanks in advance!

    Friend's MacBook Pro 2011 for $100

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 08:29 PM PDT

    Hi all,

My friend was recently in the market for upgrading his 2011 MacBook Pro to a newer one. As y'all may know, I'm currently looking for a laptop. Here are the specs, I was wondering if it was worth it? He's also offering for $40 dollars to reapply Thermal Paste/Heat Sync, so if y'all think it's better for me or him to do it please tell me!

MacBook Pro 2011 Intel i7 (2.2 GHz) 8GB DDR3 (upgradable to 16) 500 GB hard drive No damage to keyboard/touchpad/screen

    Thanks!

Looking for an economically priced Laptop for STEM university needs that is sturdy enough to be carried around everywhere.

Title! USA. Doesn't have to be fancy or anything, just looking for something to take notes on, do calculations, operate Word and Excel, and browse the internet while I'm at university. Portability, endurance, and low price are essential for me. Will be keeping in my bookbag while not in use, so it shouldn't be fragile (Like my damn lenovo...) Looking to spend $300 or under... What are my options?

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, open to Chrome, but new to the OS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Microsoft Word, Excel

=<15.6", USA, <$7k, Looking for PC laptop for Excel, Games to replace MBP 15"

    Posted: 30 Jul 2018 05:28 PM PDT

I want to replace my MBP with a windows laptop because I use excel frequently and hate the touch bar. It is terrible.

I buy a new laptop every 2-3 years and I want to buy a computer that will be able to run games without hiccups for that timeframe

Important considerations: -Want good build quality (I like that the macbooks are all metal / feel more solid than lenovos I've had at work)

-I don't need to run all games on ultra (I tend to prefer running games on low quality graphics actually) but want adequate speed AND cooling so that I won't have hiccups like I do on my MBP when I'm running games + chrome loaded up + office apps + spotify at the same time

-Need a good touchpad (Macbook touchpad blows all windows out of the water as far as I'm concerned)

-Ideally USB-C charging and touchscreen capability (strongly preferred but not necessary)

    Thanks for your help
