Looking for a laptop for professional use Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:05 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Around 1300 EUR. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** For me the most important in a laptop is the build quality and the cooling system. The processor should be i7 with at least 4 cores, and 16GB of RAM are also a must. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I don't mind weight. Actually the heavier the better. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I will use it with two OS, Windwos and Linux. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No i will not use any special software of that kind. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I am not gaming. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Reliable build quality and build in SSD (128 or 256 gb is ok, i won't be needing more). * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Thanks in advance. Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:04 AM PDT Im looking for a laptop that can run fortnite at medium settings at 60 fps with a budget of around $600 but if one will meet those requirements for cheaper id prefer that but if for $600 there is one that could run it at high settings or something id also be Okay with it. Basically for a lower price id want medium settings 60 fps but id be willing to pay more for better settings. [link] [comments] |

Laptop for an architecture student Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:42 AM PDT My cousin needs a new laptop as she is about to enrol in an architecture program. * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Germany, ~€2000 * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2-in-1 might come in handy, battery life is important. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Fairly. I asked her what her needs would be and the answer was "something thin and light, also white is preferable. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15" * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** She is going to study architecture, so probably lots of CAD
After looking around, the Dell XPS 15 (i7-8750H, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, GTX 1050Ti 4 GB GDDR5) seems like it would be a good choice for her but it might be an overkill. My limited knowledge on architecture software leads me to believe it's GPU and CPU intensive so she'd need something powerful enough to get her through her degree. The one thing I can't decide is if she needs the UHD screen. How important is resolution to architecture students? Is digital sketching a norm or necessary? I have looked into the Surface line, but it's crazy expensive to get a similar configuration. I have no clue what other brands and models are good these days so any suggestions are more than welcome. Edit: Formatting. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:24 AM PDT I made a post yesterday and got some suggestions and idea of the market. I continued the search though and will provide a list of Amazon links, with some laptops. I would like your input. Furthermore, is the 8th gen i7 too much for my needs? Is the i5 just fine? Should I look for an i5 with better GPU for example?
Let's refer to the laptops by "Link Number" because names and codes are too complicated. Once again, thank you [link] [comments] |

Is it realistic to get a 1000-1100$ GTX1160 gaming laptop before christmas? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:15 AM PDT Hey guys, sorry for stupid question, but according to your knowledge of previous laptop releases with nvidia GPUs, do you think it is realistic to think there will be available budget gaming laptop (thinking Dell G3/G5, coffee lake i5, europe) before christmas for 1000-1100$ price, or should i just look for 1060 laptops? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Laptop for University Student going into Game Development/Animation Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:01 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: USA / $1,000-$1,500 (I'm ok with going a little over, but not by much.) Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:37 AM PDT It really does need to be portable... Can someone please recommend me a laptop (with a budget of around $500) that can at least run games like Fallout NV decently? I'm not really looking into Chromebooks. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Need a laptop to last all through college Posted: 30 Jul 2018 08:24 PM PDT Here's my old laptop: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-hp-15-n278sa-amd-a8-4555m-16ghz-radeon-hd7600g-gpu-8gb-ram-1tb-hdd-dvdrw-hdmi-win-81-grade-aplus It wasn't a bad laptop, it just got a little slower about 3 years after purchase and the battery life suffered. Total budget and country of purchase: $400-$750, United States Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.: Just want it to be reliable for traveling to and from class, and a long battery life to last me 6+ hours How important is weight and thinness to you? Lighter/Thinner is better Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Doesn't matter Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not planning on doing any gaming. I use google drive/docs/slides/sheets, some Microsoft platforms, and music making programs such as Musescore and Finale. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not gaming. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Maybe a light up keyboard? The one that has the backlight and can change colors. Not important but I always wanted one lol Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just something that is better than my old laptop. I was big into gaming in my high school years and games took up a lot of space and made my laptop slow. Also, battery was a big problem for my old laptop; the battery life is about 1 hour which is no bueno. I want my new laptop to last me all four years and maybe more if i get into professional school. I prefer portability as long as it does not sacrifice and specs. [link] [comments] |

Acer Aspire 3 vs Acer Aspire E15 Posted: 30 Jul 2018 09:31 PM PDT I'm really bad at understanding tech specs. I'm trying to compare these two laptops: Acer Aspire 3: http://www.microcenter.com/product/487696/Aspire_3_A315-51-56GT_156_Laptop_Computer_-_Black Acer Aspire E15: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K1IO3QW/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_3?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 To me, it looks like the Acer Aspire 3 has better specs. It has a better processor. i5 vs i3! And its cheaper? What am I missing? [link] [comments] |
college laptop for under $1000 Posted: 30 Jul 2018 06:50 PM PDT Hello folks. Looking for an i5 8th generation machine. Minimum of 8 GB RAM; if it only has 8, needs to have an open slot to add more. Prefer to have 256+ SSD, but conventional hard drive would be ok. GPU not important; not gonna be used for gaming. 14 or 15 inch screen. Do not need a touch screen! Hopefully something fairly well built that will last 2-3 years. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Best <$2500 laptop for graduate school Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:43 PM PDT I am a graduate student in biomedical engineering and recently won an academic fellowship that includes a $2500 allowance for a new computer. I am constantly moving around and am certain that I want a laptop. Additionally, I do not keep any of the money remaining after I purchase a laptop, so I am not incentivized to cheap out or go significantly under the $2500 allowance. Therefore, my goal is to buy a laptop for just around $2000 (to cover tax and a warranty) that will best suit my needs. My needs will include analyzing tens of millions of data points and writing programs to perform basic statistical tests and linear/nonlinear regressions while running other programs in parallel. However, most of the laptops I keep seeing in reviews within the ~$2000 price range are gaming laptops with beastly graphics cards (e.g. the Gigabyte Aero 15x, MSI gs65, etc.). While I think it would be awesome to be able to play high-quality graphics games and enjoy gaming, I would find it slightly irresponsible of me to buy a "gaming" laptop for a fellowship intended to fund scientific research. My question, then, is: Are gaming laptops also the best laptops in general for general use? If not, why do I find that the best "business use" laptops in the price range (e.g. Lenovo Thinkpad X1) seem to have comparable to slightly-worse specs (the lenovo thinkpad x1 for example seems to be missing the hexacore processor that the Aero 15x has and does not have a dedicated graphics card). What is being sacrificed in the transition from $2500 "business" laptop to $2500 "gaming" laptop? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Friend's MacBook Pro 2011 for $100 Posted: 30 Jul 2018 08:29 PM PDT Hi all, My friend was recently in the market for upgrading his 2011 MacBook Pro to a newer one. As y'all may know, I'm currently looking for a laptop. Here are the specs, I was wondering if it was worth it? He's also offering for $40 dollars to reapply Thermal Paste/Heat Sync, so if y'all think it's better for me or him to do it please tell me! MacBook Pro 2011 Intel i7 (2.2 GHz) 8GB DDR3 (upgradable to 16) 500 GB hard drive No damage to keyboard/touchpad/screen Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:29 PM PDT Title! USA. Doesn't have to be fancy or anything, just looking for something to take notes on, do calculations, operate Word and Excel, and browse the internet while I'm at university. Portability, endurance, and low price are essential for me. Will be keeping in my bookbag while not in use, so it shouldn't be fragile (Like my damn lenovo...) Looking to spend $300 or under... What are my options?

=<15.6", USA, <$7k, Looking for PC laptop for Excel, Games to replace MBP 15" Posted: 30 Jul 2018 05:28 PM PDT I want to replace my MBP with a windows laptop because I use excel frequently and hate the touch bar. It is terrible. I buy a new laptop every 2-3 years and I want to buy a computer that will be able to run games without hiccups for that timeframe Important considerations: -Want good build quality (I like that the macbooks are all metal / feel more solid than lenovos I've had at work) -I don't need to run all games on ultra (I tend to prefer running games on low quality graphics actually) but want adequate speed AND cooling so that I won't have hiccups like I do on my MBP when I'm running games + chrome loaded up + office apps + spotify at the same time -Need a good touchpad (Macbook touchpad blows all windows out of the water as far as I'm concerned) -Ideally USB-C charging and touchscreen capability (strongly preferred but not necessary) Thanks for your help --edit for form * Total budget and country of purchase: =<7k, USA
