PSA: Do not download those VPN apps that are on sale. They all use the same UI, they're all made by developers with generic VPN names, and they all have the same issues.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 04:47 AM PDT

The current VPN apps that are free instead of $10-$20 look very shady. I highly recommend NOT downloading them. For some reason I can't post images but they are on the current app sale.

Edit: It seems there is a common misconception going on about what the best VPN to use is; There is none. The problem with shadowing your internet usage is, regardless of where your routing your data, it's still going through someone's server/s.

If that company is acquired, or breached, your data is good as gone (Implying that said application/company logs your internet usage, but even if that's not the case, that doesn't stop someone from the outside of logging it themselves.), because regardless of who you entrust your data with, someone will have it. A VPN will not stop a government agency from tracing your data back to your IP.

Edit 2: Can't believe I forgot to mention this, but feel free to report them as malicious/copycats. Here is a screenshot of the apps

Edit 4: Thank you to qbix and sir_froggy for recommending r/VPN and That One Privacy Site!

Why is the adoption of Vulkan on Android so slow compared to Metal(2) on iOS?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:14 PM PDT

As far as I can see, only around 20 major games on Android use Vulkan.

Some major apps like PUBG and Asphalt 9 just use OpenGLES3 even in 2018.

On iOS, almost all major games use Metal or Metal2. Apple will even stop accepting new OpenGL apps from 2019.

On mobile platforms, LLAPIs like these are vital to reducing CPU overhead, allowing for either greater performance or much less power/heat draw.

With 3rd party ROMs from places like xda-developers, how do you REALLY know those ROMs are safe? How can you trust they haven't had malware/spyware installed?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 01:15 PM PDT

I was able to get my Moto G5+ 4GB/64GB Amazon Prime Edition's bootloader unlocked in June, so I threw on PixelExperience, and other than a few aggravations getting it working at first, I've been pretty happy with it. But I just can't shake the feeling, how do I know it's safe? My life is on that phone! I've been looking at newer phones that come with Oreo out of the box, but nothing really jumps out at me that would be better enough to take the plunge. How safe are the ROMs?
