    Photo organizing software

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:06 AM PDT

My parents used to use a digital camera for all their photos and I backed up thousands of photos from the camera to my Google Drive account years ago. It's a mess now. Tons of folders, some duplicate files, etc. It will take forever to organize it myself.

What's a good program that can organize, sort, and delete duplicates?

Windows 7 or 8.1 on a Coffee Lake laptop?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 05:08 PM PDT

Has anyone on here used Windows 7 or 8.1 on a Coffee Lake laptop? I heard it's possible to get it completely functional with Kaby Lake, but with Coffee Lake apparently the integrated Intel GPU driver refuses to cooperate. This wouldn't be a big deal on a desktop but it's a problem on laptops, especially those that have nVIDIA Optimus, which requires both the Intel and the nVIDIA driver to work.

I'm considering a laptop upgrade but I'd prefer it to be able to run Windows 7 or 8.1. Any suggestions?

can i temporarily lower screen res. without rearranging my desktop icons?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 03:33 PM PDT

i have an odd, specific question

i recently upgraded to a WQHD monitor (2560x). of course the first thing i did was put that extra space to use by filling out my desktop with icons. i have a semi-specific system. drives and folders top left, web apps below that, utilities and games on the bottom, and so on.

without getting too into it the reason, i am interested in temporarily hooking up my old monitor which is of lower resolution. i know that the SECOND i do this, windows will rearrange all my desktop icons to fit the new lower-res screen.

my question is: is there a way to avoid this? can i turn off the icons display on the desktop or something during the temporary period where the old monitor is connected? it sounds stupid, but rearranging all these icons is a pain in the ass!! there's 106 of them!!

Best place to buy a legitimate Windows 7 key?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:42 PM PDT

I'm building a new PC, and I've realized that I haven't factored the price of Windows into my build. I've heard that you can use a Windows 7 key with the windows 10 installer and it will work just fine, but most of the retailers that still sell Windows 7 keys seem to be questionable at best. Any ideas?

    Windows 10 Pro Upgrade

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:37 AM PDT

Very soon I will be upgrading my 500GB hard drive to Samsung 970 EVO 500GB M.2 NVMe SSD. I really like to have a clean installation for a better experience.

I have the Recovery Disk for the original Windows 7 Pro which was shipped with my Dell Precision 5510, so do you recommend to first install Windows 7 Pro and then upgrade it to Windows 10 or do a clean Windows 10 Pro install?

Cannot boot windows from an ssd

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 06:18 AM PDT

Hello, I'm sorry if this is a long post. I recently purchased a Samsung 860 evo 1tb ssd, hoping to run it alongside my 1tb hdd as the boot drive as well as using it for storage. At first I attempted to straight clone the hdd and OS over using a cloning tool (easetodo to be specific). This was the first problem I ran into, which was that the sector sizes of the ssd and hdd were different and incompatible, meaning I could not straight clone everything over.

This is where the problems I am facing at the minute come into play. Failing the clone, I decided just to reinstall Windows onto the ssd. I downloaded the windows media tool onto a usb stick and ensured everything was as it should be (I thought) in the bios. Sata mode selection is set to AHCI, the old hdd was disconnected leaving only the ssd in the number 1 sata3 port. Upon running the windows tool, it said I could not install Windows onto the ssd because it was of mbr partition rather than gpt. Upon some research I resolved this by clearing the drive in diskpart and turning off CSM support, as it was made clear in several forums that it works best that way. However, once installing windows the first time with these settings windows just went into an installation loop. Upon removing the windows media and attempting to boot from the SSD with the newly installed OS, I was prompted to select a proper boot device, as if there was no operating system present.

What is weird is that at this point the ssd just disappeared from the bios. I figured out eventually that when CSM support is disabled in the bios, the next time you enter the bios the ssd will have disappeared. This is resolved by turning CSM support on and reloading the bios.

Basically, the point I am at now is I have redownloaded windows onto the ssd with CSM enabled, as this is the only set of options in the bios where the ssd actually shows up. However, I still receive the same error when trying to boot from the SSD, with the computer prompting me to select a proper boot device. At this point, What I believe I have done is installed windows onto the ssd both in UEFI and normal bios (I really have no experience in any of this, please correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm not sure if this bit is relevant, but in the bios the ssd is described as "P2: Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB". Would I be right in thinking that the "P2" part is partition 2? As this is not the partition with windows installed. I have attempted to correct this by making the area with windows installed the active partition in diskpart, but I receive an error which tells me that only stable mbr partitions can be made active.

Anyway, I'm out of options as to what I should do next and I'm seriously in need of help. If it's of any assistance, my specs are as follows: Gigabytes z170xp-sli motherboard I5-7500 cpucpu 16gb ddr4 ram at 2333mhz Gtx 1070

    Sanity check on windows licensing

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 09:29 AM PDT

I have been helping clean up a non profit for a while and I just learned they have an account with the MS Volume Licensing Service Center.

I logged into the account and have been looking around to see what they have as im planning on moving them over to Windows 10.

If I click on download and keys, click on the key section under the windows 10 section I see a License ID #, the name of the organization im helping, a key, type (in this case MAK), and activations/seats (1/50) and nothing under status

So just for my sanity check, does this mean the program has 49 total activations eligible to use (so in theory they can have 50 machines with windows 10 installed legally)? I just want to make sure im keeping them legal.
