Posted: 30 Jun 2018 10:41 AM PDT I am a subscribe to AT&T fiber gigabit. I use Skype for business as my phone line and keep getting a network connection warning and have overall spotty voice calls via Skype. I've run speed tests as I was getting warnings and got results of 900 down/up. Everything I've tried: -all wired (Ethernet and headset) to rule out wireless and Bluetooth issues -same skype account on a different laptop to rule out laptop issues. -changed firewall settings on the router based on another post. I'm losing my mind trying to get it to work. Any suggestions? Also, using direct access through my work, not sure if it's in their end but they seem to deny it. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Creating a Mesh Network with different brands of routers? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 06:21 PM PDT Hi, I have a Google Onhub which I know is mesh compatible, I just found a crazy deal on the Samsung Connect Home, mesh wifi kit. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with creating a mesh network with two brands of routers? I want to run the Onhub and one unit of the Samsung Connect Home in mesh. How can I do that? I have no idea what budget router to get Posted: 30 Jun 2018 05:11 PM PDT I'm sick of xfinity charging me for their garbage modem/router combo, so I decided it was time to upgrade. I was planning on buying the Arris SB6141. I was going to spend more and get the SB1683, but money is really tight and my down speed is only 5mbps on a good day. I'm lost on what router to get. Not including my computer that is using a wired connection, there are about 4-5 other devices that are connected, and in some of the rooms upstairs it's hard to get a strong signal. Through the bit of research I've done, the TP Link Archer C50 appears to be the best choice for me as I don't have a lot of money to spend. IF there are better options though, I would love to hear them. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Problems powering my Ubiquiti LR AP Posted: 30 Jun 2018 04:37 PM PDT Hello, I recently purchased some Ubiquiti gear for my apartment and I'm having trouble setting up the AP. Currently, I have the USG router connected to the wall through WAN. Then, I have a ethernet cable plugged from the WAN/LAN 2 to my desktop, and that internet works perfectly. And then, I have a PoE Adapter which has the LAN port plugged into the other WAN/LAN in my USG, and then the POE port is plugged into the AP. The AP isn't turning on, and I even tried just plugging in the PoE adapter to the AP, and no other connections and it still doesn't light up. In addition, I have an Edgerouter POE which I plugged into the AP and theres still no power. Is there something I'm missing / any suggestions? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Can anyone recommend a good, cheap wifi bridge? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:42 PM PDT Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some kind of wifi bridge or adapter to use with my old PS3. Currently, I have an 802.11ac router upstairs which puts out a n/g signal on 2.4ghz and an ac/n signal at 5ghz. Most devices on the network work great, except for the PS3 in the basement rec room, which keeps having to downgrade streaming quality. Since PS3 only supports 802.11g, I'm looking for a device that will pick up the ac signal and then output a 10/100/1000 Ethernet line to the PlayStation. Any recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Upgraded internet, random ping spikes when gaming Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:06 PM PDT I upgraded my internet recently from 30mbps to 150mbps, a tech came and set up a new router and everything. The speed is as advertised when I check speedtest, but my ping in games like league/csgo is inconsistent. I'll have spikes to 150-250+ ping at least 7-8 times in a 30 min window. This happens at 2am when nobody in the house is doing anything on the internet (spotify/netflix shouldn't even affect my ping much with a 150mbps connection anyway right?). I've tried resetting the router and disabling wifi on other devices to see if it helped, nothing. My ping was consistent as long as nobody was using netflix when I had the same ISP's lowest tier 30mbps connection, so this makes no sense to me. Any links/programs/help on how to find out what's causing these constant ping spikes are greatly appreciated. tl;dr I upgraded my internet and now I'm getting ping spikes while gaming that I didn't with a significantly worse connection. Looking for a way to find out what's causing the spikes and eliminate them so I can play multiplayer games without wanting to punch a hole in my monitor. Thanks for any and all help/advice [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 01:59 PM PDT I've been having issues with latency spiking through out the day that makes streaming, gaming, or skype impossible. I contacted my ISP (Charter Spectrum) 3 months ago about the issue had techs come out and update all the aging wiring in my home and my modem. They generally tell me my download and upload speeds are correct and just shrug... The tech tried to tell me my issue is due to "aging devices"...and pushed me to upgrade download speeds... I decided to figure out the issue myself but I am not as network savy as I would like. Here are the results of a few test I've run with my laptop hardwired to the modem: |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | WinMTR statistics | | Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last | |------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------| | No response from host - 100 | 23 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | | 96.34.88.129 - 0 | 112 | 112 | 8 | 10 | 27 | 10 | | 96.34.88.16 - 0 | 112 | 112 | 8 | 10 | 24 | 9 | | 96.34.90.15 - 0 | 112 | 112 | 10 | 16 | 35 | 19 | | 96.34.0.33 - 0 | 112 | 112 | 9 | 14 | 26 | 11 | | 96.34.0.164 - 0 | 112 | 112 | 22 | 28 | 47 | 27 | | 96.34.3.35 - 0 | 112 | 112 | 22 | 25 | 43 | 23 | | 96.34.150.71 - 0 | 112 | 112 | 23 | 26 | 43 | 24 | | 108.170.249.33 - 0 | 112 | 112 | 24 | 27 | 44 | 25 | | 216.239.54.221 - 0 | 112 | 112 | 22 | 24 | 43 | 22 | | 8.8.8.8 - 0 | 112 | 112 | 21 | 26 | 38 | 26 | |________________________________________________|______|______|______|______|______|______| WinMTR v0.92 GPL V2 by Appnor MSP - Fully Managed Hosting & Cloud Provider Tracing route to google-public-dns-a.google.com [8.8.8.8] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 * * * Request timed out. 2 9 ms 10 ms 8 ms dtr03slidla-tge-0-6-1-0.slid.la.charter.com [96.34.88.129] 3 9 ms 10 ms 9 ms 96-34-88-16.static.unas.la.charter.com [96.34.88.16] 4 12 ms 13 ms 13 ms 96-34-90-15.static.unas.la.charter.com [96.34.90.15] 5 13 ms 13 ms 13 ms bbr02slidla-bue-1.slid.la.charter.com [96.34.0.33] 6 24 ms 28 ms 29 ms bbr01sgnwmi-tge-0-2-0-10.sgnw.mi.charter.com [96.34.0.164] 7 23 ms 31 ms 23 ms prr01snjsca-tge-0-0-0-1.snjs.ca.charter.com [96.34.3.35] 8 23 ms 24 ms 23 ms 96-34-150-71.static.unas.mo.charter.com [96.34.150.71] 9 24 ms 31 ms 24 ms 108.170.249.33 10 23 ms 22 ms 22 ms 216.239.54.221 11 24 ms 23 ms 21 ms google-public-dns-a.google.com [8.8.8.8] Any advice or other tests that could be run to determine where the issue is being caused ? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 07:37 AM PDT I'm about to move to home that'll be near a family member. We have played around with the idea of networking our homes together. The issue is we aren't going to be exactly next door to each other, plus there is a road between us and we will be about 500ft apart. We have very rough line of sight from each other homes, like a small corner to corner of each other properties. There maybe a possibility of running a cable between the homes, but a paved road is still an issue. We doubt the county/municipality would allow us to run a fiber/Ethernet across the road , above it or use the power poles to do the connection. There is an idea, since there is a small drainage creek that runs under the road that divides us and runs behind both properties, to run a cable along that route. Shitty paint drawing to give a very rough idea of positioning of houses. So, speed are the up most priority, looking to have 10Gb perhaps if a cable is used, outdoor fiber. if wireless used, would like 1Gb+ speeds. I would like to keep it under $1000 for the overall project. Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? [link] [comments] |

Weird AP handoff issues after changing routers Posted: 30 Jun 2018 03:55 PM PDT I was on a Netgear R6050 when I first bought my TP-Link EAP225 the hand-off was very smooth. With all the connection problems I had with games, however, I decided to get a T-Mobile ASUS router and convert it into an RT-AC68U. The network seemed to be improved in general with the new router, except that for some reason the hand-off from the EAP225(AP)->AC68U(Router) is not functioning and the connection has to drop before it'll pick up Wi-Fi from the AC68U. Here's where it gets stranger: the hand-off is very smooth when I go from AC68U->EAP225! Can anyone give me steps or advice on how to tackle this problem? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 09:27 AM PDT I've been having high ping spikes and packet loss a lot recently. I've had multiple techs come out and I've just installed a new netgear CM600 modem, connected to an Asus RT-AC87R. I've run a throughput test from tamosoft and had these results: https://i.imgur.com/fRxr78L.jpg https://i.imgur.com/jZE1tsJ.png https://i.imgur.com/ZtOeCnO.png Im not sure what to gather from these, and what should be my next action. Any help would be greatly appreciated this is driving me up a wall. Edit: I get this when pinging while directly connected to my modem: https://i.imgur.com/5kWsoG4.png Edit 2: Better Summary-
Update: Pinging 8.8.8.8 again from the modem now results in 0 packets lost, havent changed anything so not sure why [link] [comments] |

Issue with unmanaged switch and smart TV Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:28 PM PDT Hi all, So I have an unmanaged switch in my living room to connect my Sony Bravia smart TV along with some game consoles and HTPC to the wireless router in my home office. Everything works fine, until I connect the TV to the switch in the living room. Then everything attached to the unmanaged switch loses its connection. If get rid of the switch and connect the TV directly to the router in the office, it works fine. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
When should I replace my router? Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:13 PM PDT I currently own a Netgear R6700 router. I was just wondering when I should go out and buy a new router, and if I do, will I be seeing better upload/download speeds? I'm currently getting 13 megabits for the upload speed and 77 megabits for the download speed (tested at speedtest.com). So should I be expecting an upgrade in my speed if I purchase a new router, or should I just use it until it basically stops working altogether (10+ years from now?) I'm pretty sure this might already be asked on reddit but I couldn't find a similar post. Sorry if there is another one though, and thanks in advanced for answering. [link] [comments] |
Netgear A6210 adapter ping spike. Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:01 PM PDT I've had it for about 2 years now, with no issue, until a couple weeks ago when netgear released an update. I cant find a rollback driver and I've reinstalled the drivers/genie. Flawless connection when hardwired and my brother's wireless connection has no issue on the same network. Any advice on what to look for would be greatly appreciated. Tempted to buy a seperate router for myself, but would rather avoid that. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 07:48 AM PDT Hi So I got this switch for free but it's missing the rack ears. Looked on eBay but the ones i find are really expensive or are for different models although they seem to fit but without measurements I don't want to gamble. Any tips for finding correct ones on the cheap within EU? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:01 AM PDT Hey All: I'm looking to control my bandwidth on the LAN, as opposed to through the WAN. I've got an R7000 running Shibby's Tomato custom firmware. It's connected to a switch for my hardwired devices (PCs, game consoles, and things that I like bandwidth for). The R7000 also does all static binding so that everything on my network is DHCP but the router assigns very specific IPs. Various devices use 2.4 and 5ghz bands of the AC network as well. The most recent problem has come up with IoT devices. I've added several wi-fi cameras around our house and have a Zoneminder DVR install on a linux box. It leaves them on "monitor" all day (so they basically stream data to it all day long) and then I have systems to turn them onto "Mocord" (see something, say something) mode when we're gone. Two of the cameras are running 1080p streams into the box. None of them will run on the 5ghz network, so you can imagine the amount of data running on 2.4 all day long. In fact, if the cameras are talking to Zoneminder, I can't really do anything bandwidth intensive on the 2.4 (e.g. Playstation Vita remote-play). Shaping and controlling bandwidth are completely foreign topics to me. Do you folks have any tips on how I can shape the bandwidth, perhaps prioritizing certain IPs over others if they're trying to get stuff done? I stupidly posted over on r/networking without reading the rules so for obvious reasons the post was deleted. Before they did, though, I was told to think about a second AP; do you agree? Predictable ping spikes ruining gaming online Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:39 AM PDT Recently moved into a new house I'm renting out and the internet being used is BT Fibre with a HomeHub 5 Type A. Tried playing some online games and across the board all of them were unplayable due to constant ping spikes. By constant I mean predictable and essentially every few seconds, screenshot of me pinging to the router shows that it hovers around 4ms and then every second or third ping it jumps up. I'm using a TP Link powerline adapter so the 4ms ping to the router is expected but I cannot figure out the strangely timed ping spikes, anyone know of any solutions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:10 AM PDT The answer to my question could very well be a quick "no". The scenario: I live in a suite in a house with my landlords. They upgraded their internet and set up a username and password, to allow me to have WiFi in my suite. I'm wondering if it is possible to set up the NetGear wireless router that I was using previously, as an access point? I don not have physical access to their main modem/ router? I don't want to hassle them by asking if I can hardwire the NetGear into their modem. My ultimate goal is to set the NetGear router up as an access point, with VPN that I can connect my ROKU to, so I can bypass country restrictions. I'm in Canada, and ROKU content sucks in Canada. =( Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:02 AM PDT My faithful old Linksys router I've had for about 10 years is finally starting to show its age. And now I'm in need of a new one. I don't need anything fancy. Just a little 4-port router. The most complicated thing I'll do is to occasionally transfer files from one computer to another. Gigabit LAN would be nice, but not a requirement. Looking to spend around $50. What would you guys recommend? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Jun 2018 04:44 AM PDT We're two people using, but usually have to be connected on separate devices. We have fiber but the router doesn't reach down the cellar or at the other side of the house, which proves to be quite an issue. The router is especially unreliable and drops out a few times per hour. I've researched a bit and Ubiquiti seems to be a renowned brand, it isn't established too well in Sweden though. Which would you recommend? Money is not an issue [link] [comments] |
