Learn from basic linux commands to pretty advanced concepts with the bandits game! Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:12 AM PDT Hi everyone! Yesterday I've stumbled across The Bandits game, from OverTheWire. It blew me away for how fun it was and how much it made me learn about linux with a very biref introduction to more complex concepts. I know it is probably well-known by most of you but I belive it is a very good place for beginners to start. You can play it here, hope you enjoy! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2018 04:45 AM PDT I'm currently running Antergos and want to change and read about Gecko Linux, so wanted to know about it. Is it good? Any security issues? [link] [comments] |
Is Comptia+ Linux worth getting? Posted: 31 May 2018 11:36 PM PDT I live in japan and was wondering if it's worth it to get that cert since i think that it would be an easy step to become some kind of linux open source software programmer. [link] [comments] |
How does Virtualhost work? Fedora 28 Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:57 AM PDT Hello I'm new to the Linux foundation and I can't get my virtualhost working as it points to default location of "var/www/html" My code: <script src="https://pastebin.com/embed_js/pRe8Ps25"></script> Why isn't my www.pannenkoekwhatever.nl not working? Saints Row the Third low fps - wider system issues? Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:22 AM PDT I decided to play with Linux recently and last night got a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 on my laptop. I spent the better part of the last 12 hours trying to get a proper driver installed for my gpu, and finally got the nVidia 396.24 driver installed from the graphics-drivers ppa. (I had a few issues with nouveau, trying to get the official release installed, and the dpkg process stalling, but terminal says everything is installed and working and there are no more boot hang ups so... Yay?) I decided to run a game to test before work and decided to try Saints Row the Third (I had steam and a few games installed before realizing nouveau didn't have what I needed to run them), but my FPS is ridiculously low. While this could just be Saints Row, I'm thinking there may be some configuration things I need to run, but nVidia x server doesn't want to launch (based on the Ubuntu Apps page, this is a common issue in 18.04). Is there anything I can do in the terminal for this? System info:. Other issues I'm having: Edit: if I need to reinstall and do this all over again because my struggles with the gpu install, I will. Don't hesitate to offer that suggestion. I'm halfway to that thought myself. I'm just not sure how wiping the partition and starting over would work. [link] [comments] |
I Can't scan for wireless networks via cli using "iw" Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:19 PM PDT Arch Linux 4.16.12-1-ARCH I tried scanning for wireless networks using but then got this error then I tried to set the interface up but then again another error then I typed "sudo rfkill" So how should I proceed? Solid peripheral choices (Or just some help - either is welcome) Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:16 PM PDT I've been using Ubuntu for about 3 years now and as much as I love Linux, one thing that really annoys me is that I am constantly getting barraged by random and unprovoked hardware errors to this day. I currently have Corsair K75/65 mouse and keyboard. Not sure of the specifics, but the keyboard has never worked well with Linux. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:57 PM PDT I am obviously new to Ubuntu (Linux as a whole), and I cannot figure out how to install Itch.io. The Itch.io site has instructions, but I don't even know how to follow them. I'm on the latest version of Ubuntu 18.04? I could really use some one that is more knowledgable to walk me through this, please. If there is information somewhere that I missed that you could point me to, that would work as well. i3blocks issue with getting correct output on bar Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:37 AM PDT I wrote a little script (https://pastebin.com/nFA2VqNa) that basically just prints whether I am using my VPN or not. The script when ran by itself works great and as intended, but when I put it into i3blocks it only prints the VPN is down no matter what. I am confused by this as I have other things I have added to i3blocks and they work as intended. Anyone dealt with a similar issue? Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
PowerBroker Identity Services Enterprise - Install and Configuration - HELP! Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:03 AM PDT I posted this on /r/sysadmin but wanted to check on here as well. Anyone out there familiar with installing and configuring Beyond Trust's PowerBroker Identity Services Management Console on Windows? The documentation they provide is weak. Appreciate any assistance! [link] [comments] |
How to set alias to query for Fully qualified Hostname? Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:23 AM PDT My host machine is on an Intranet and I would like to set an alias to query for Fully qualified Hostname. For example, if I ping 'abcd`, my host machine should send the query for FQDN i.e., 'abcd.location.globaldomain' instead of waiting for Domain Name Server to resolve it. Where can I change this config on my local machine? I understand that "hosts" or "resolv.conf" files are possible candidates but since I am a noob to Linux Networking, the manual pages are not easy for me and would be nice if someone could point out the correct file with an example. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Dual Booting Linux on MacBookPro 2016 (Touch Bar & 13,2) Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:28 AM PDT Hello, I'm not sure if I'm in the right place. I've recently inherited a Macbook Pro 2016 and was looking to Dual Boot Linux (Ubuntu) on the laptop. I'm aware there are plenty of issues regarding compatibility and also found guides out there on installing it using a USB. My issue is when I go to Boot from USB (I've set the USB up correctly as far as I'm aware) my Mac does not detect the USB. Is this because of the USB-C to USB 3 converter I use or could it be something else? Thank you in advance for any help or advice. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:01 AM PDT I have been trying to use this layout from r/Conkyporn but am stymied by the lack of the cairo module. I installed libcairo2 thinking it might solve my problem. Here is my output: conky -c .conky/conky-dashboard-master/conky_dashbo Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |

Got a Poweredge 1800 from a friend, where can I start? Posted: 31 May 2018 04:26 PM PDT I've been moving everything to Linux (except my Mac Tower 10.6.8 that just won't die!) and a friend had an old server to give me to learn on. My problem is I don't know where to even begin. I'm teaching myself Sysadmin and know my way around Linux... just not enough yet to where I feel comfortable. I'd like to do something with it... no OS on it yet. 4 new(ish) hard drives though. It's an older machine (2005?) I was thinking some sort of hard drive backup or file server or both? Any guidance is appreciated :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2018 06:51 PM PDT I built a Centos 7 VM on our hyper-v. I've successfully bound it to the domain. Our domain shows when you run realm list.... I also made the adjustment to the sssd.conf file to set the used fully qualified domain to false.... But now when I do id <user> I get : no such user found I followed this guide https://www.rootusers.com/how-to-join-centos-linux-to-an-active-directory-domain Any ideas, or tips to debug to find out why? Problem with wi-fi on linux mint Posted: 31 May 2018 08:21 PM PDT I am using the Belkin F9L1101v2 wifi card with my linux mint desktop. At first, I was unable to get any internet access at all with the device, but after installing the RTL8192 driver, the internet access mostly works except for this problem I am posting about. Whenever I am playing any kind of game in a browser, it will work without lag for a few minutes, and then all of a sudden without warning, any part of the game based on the connection to the server (player's positions and whatnot) will stop updating for roughly ten or twenty seconds. I don't think this problem is present strictly when I'm playing browser games, but it is most obvious in this situation. For example, I also tried pinging google.com while I was playing a game. The ping was a mostly steady 50 ms until the lagging situation described above began to occur. Once this started, the ping jumped to several seconds. After ten or twenty seconds, it returned to normal. I have tried chrome, firefox, opera, and probably a few others that I am forgetting about, but I don't think the browser is the problem because this behavior persists regardless of what browser I choose. I am somewhat of a linux noob so I don't really have any idea what would cause this. But I tried to include as much information as I thought was relevant and will be happy to provide more if anyone thinks it will help them identify the problem. Thanks for your help. EDIT: Also, the machine which I installed linux on also has another hard drive with Windows 7 installed. When I boot up from that hard drive using the exact same belkin thing, I have no such problem with the internet. [link] [comments] |
How to connect to a thermostat Posted: 31 May 2018 10:50 PM PDT Hey reddit, I'm trying to connect to my thermostat at work through the command line so I can control the temperature better. I understand that this might be a bit ambitious and probably not fruitful, but I'd still like to try. I can see all the IP addresses on my network using arp-scan --localnet, but is there a way to tell which one is the thermostat? (It's a Temperzone, in case that's helpful). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2018 10:06 PM PDT I am fairly new to Linux, but I have been reading, trying, learning, and asking... I did read that by using the command: wget -O <filename> http://url.... I am able to get the file and when downloaded, it is saved under the NEW <filename> I gave t after the -O. Now, to my question: Is there a way to parse a section of the filename? For instance: wget -O NewFileName.* http://url/v1.2.3.tar.gz so when the file is saved it saved it as: NewFileName.v1.2.3.tar.gz? Because it is saving at this moment using that string simply as: NewFileName.* but I would need it to save it with the: NewFileName.+original.tar.gz for versioning. Thanks in advance! Something similar to crontab for high volume entries? Posted: 31 May 2018 09:42 PM PDT Hi I was wondering how you guys provide SaaS for a program that runs every 15 minute for each customer. I am using Crontab initially but I'm thinking how I can scale. It doesn't seem sustainable to keep track of each customers through crontab. Is there somehow I can batch these jobs using something other than crontab? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Could i use it to backup my new laptop the same way I currently use one Drive or are there some better uses for it. I also do a lot of stuff with tensorflow so would it be possible to set it up to run the calculations and the like. Any help would be great. THanks. [link] [comments] |
