I like building a PC more than playing games on them

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:41 AM PDT

    Hey guys!

As I wrote in the title, I like building PCs more than playing games, anyone else feels this way, or is it just me?

Also what do you think, how can I build more without losing a lot of money?

I thought about buying used parts, and building a PC from them, then selling the PC. I also tought about modding, of course the same "used part PC" and I can sell that too. Of couse I don't want to earn money from this, so it would be the same price as the parts were together, or maybe a very little more.

I thought of picking up a hobby as well which is similar to PC building, but less expensive, but I haven't find anything similar yet.

$2000 Pc for terminally ill friend

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:22 AM PDT

Recently my closest friend was diagnosed as terminally ill and instead of Disneyland, I would like to buy a pc for him as he's been an avid gamer all his life. I would go all in but I'm only a student and can't pay much more. I have set out a $2000 budget +- a couple hundred. I was wondering about what to build for him as I don't know a lot about building computers. A lot of guides have conflicting information and a lot of them aren't updated. So far, I was thinking about a GTX 1080 TI FTW3 from Evga, an i7-8700k, a MSI Z370 m5 gaming, Hyper 212 Turbo, and an undecided 750 watt gold PSU. I am looking for suggestions and improvements for the rest!

Edit: took the advice of you guys and consulted him. He was thrilled to build it with me and more thrilled in the idea of having his young son build it with us who could also use it after who too is turning into an avid gamer!

Laptop got stolen, need advice for new pc

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:49 AM PDT

Hello Reddit, as the title says, my laptop got stolen and since it has probably changed hands around 10 times, i doubt i'll see it again. I'm a student so i don't have a big budget but with the help of my parents i can get a 500€(i'm from portugal)/583$ budget for the new pc.

With my very limited knowledge i made like a "sketch" for the end-result build and it is :
    CPU - AMD ryzen 5 2400G Quadcore 3.6ghz
Motherboard - micro atx msi a320 bazooka
    Case - Micro-atx nox virtus
psu - corsair cx450m semi modular
    ram - g.skill nt 4gb(1x4gb) ddr4-2400mhz CL15
    storage - SSD 2.5" kingston a400 120gb tlc sata
    monitor - Asus vs197de tn 18.5"fwxga 16:9 60hz

Probably this pc wouldn't even work BUT since i'm not an hardcore gamer i don't want a budget beast, just something that plays me my League games every now and then(but with a possible upgrade path for the future) and yes technically i'm under budget but is because as i said, my parents are helping with this so i don't want to overload them.
    Thanks in advance !!!! :D

People of buildapc I need your help. I've recently moved switched internet providers and ever since that move I have had a brief disconnect roughly every half hour. Here's the rub, it's only from gaming servers. I'll still be connected to either discord or TeamSpeak for voice, but from any gaming servers I receive a socket closure for disconnection. As far as I know I have all the latest drivers installed, I have new cables to the modem and switched to different ports, tried a port forwarding option. I'm stumped. I have the asrock x370 pro gaming board, ryzen 1600x, and a msi geforce 1080ti.

TL:DR half hour disconnection and don't know how to fix.

I've tried everything. PLEASE HELP ME

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:52 PM PDT

I built my first PC [parts list here](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Yf7KXP) late March of this year, and everything was seemingly going great. On my first startup I made sure to get all the driver updates and do everything I seemingly would need to do. And for a few months it was fine. However, once I downloaded Skyrim and started playing, every now and then I would freeze, my whole computer would freeze with a loud buzzing sound coming through my headphones. Internet results said this was a PSU issue, but I never got a replacement PSU because for some reason the problem stopped occurring.

However, more recently I've been attempting to play games like Fortnite and Kingdom Come Deliverance and frequent crashes happen VERY often. However, instead of the buzzing sound crashes (Though I think it happened once) it is now a BSOD. However, seemingly every crash the BSOD error is something different. DPC Watchdog violation, IRQL not less or equal, memory management, and others I can't remember. I even tried simple Minecraft and I got a BSOD on that as well. Sometimes after the BSOD, when I startup my computer again and login I immediately BSOD again as well.

The only game that doesnt BSOD or crash is League.

I've reset my PC 2 times

    Reformatted my pc 2 times

    Updated all drivers

    Tried playing with default drivers

Tried basically anything I can find on google

    Please Help

My pc can barely run Battlefield 1 on low settings at 1920x1080

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:52 PM PDT

    Hi, first time poster here.

I recently formated my PC and reinstalled every single driver. I have bought an ultrawide monitor for the first time and my PC cant handle anything. To use battlefield 1 as an example: I turn everyting to low and turn my res. to 1920x1080. It still lags and looks terrible. This is my current build: (I just ordered 2x4bg ram, to get 16 in total)

    https://image.ibb.co/cfE6cd/33995382_10156269472340168_7556345322033643520_n.png

Is my PC just to weak to handle titles like BF1, pubg etc. ? If i want an upgrade, what would should i look at first?

Thank you so much in advance. I'm really bad at these sort of things..

    Bootable Win10 USB

Hi, I have a windows key, but no install disk etc for my PC. I only have Macs around my house because my family hates PC's (don't even ask why) I have a blank HDD and a 32GB USB stick which I would like to put win10 on to then put on the HDD. How do I go about doing this without a Windows machine? Or do I have to get a mate to do it for me?

    Help with Connecting a PSU

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:18 PM PDT

My board is a Dell Precision T1700, the current PSU has two cords going to the motherboard, a 4-pin CPU power connector and a 8-pin power connector. There are no other cords and not enough watt.

The PSU I am trying to attach to my Motherboard is a TR2-500w https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153165.
I need to reconnect to these plus two pci's on my graphic card.

    It has the: Main Power (24 -Pin), ATX 12V (4 + 4-Pin), PCI-E (6 + 2-Pin ,SPCI-E (6-Pin) SATA (5-Pin), Peripheral (4-Pin), FDD (4-Pin)

The two 4 make the 8pin and the pci ones are easy to figure and labled. I still need to connect the final 4 pin on the motherboard.

What is the best way to do this?

    Budget HTC Vive Build

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:14 PM PDT

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I want to be able to play HTC Vive. Im looking at mostly simple games like escape rooms and such but also want to be able to play AAA games like fallout 4 and such. Rainbow 6 Seige, overwatch, other types of FPS shooters when not playing VR

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Im looking for smooth VR and smooth gaming. A lot will depend on the monitor, I have an old(ish) Vizio 32" TV I will use for the short term and buy a gaming monitor at some point.
What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I would like to stay around $800. I will do it over time to spread the pain around.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Ryzen 2600 with custom cooler or 2600X?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:35 PM PDT

So I'm planning to upgrade to ryzen when the B450 mobos come out. Although I'm not sure yet which cpu to get.

I have a 2 monitor setup so I do quite some multitasking, for example playing a game and watching a stream. (My cpu makes a bottleneck when this happens, 100% usage and game is stuttering).

The type of games I play are open world and simulation games mostly. Also I really would like to stream once in a while then. I streamed years ago but didn't quite enjoy it as my pc wasn't doing so good.

Next to some games I also have development environments (aka virtual machines) on my pc. I'm a php developer.

Now, back to the cpu thing, second gen ryzen overclocks automaticly depending on the cpu's temp and such (only on x4xx mobos if i'm right?) so thinking if i get the 2600 with a ~30€ cooler or some kind, would it be a better choice than the 2600X and the stock cooler?

I currently have 8GB of ram, 2133 speed. But already 100% decided I'll upgrade that too to 16GB with a speed of 3000.

Does the MSI b350 gaming plus mother board support the Ryzen 7 2700x out of the box without a firmware update?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 05:56 AM PDT

As the title states, I'm looking to do a new build and this will be the first time I am going for an AMD build due to them being cheaper. I built my basket on Ebuyer and then plugged the parts into pcpartpicker and it threw up a warning about how some of the b350 chipsets don't support the latest Ryzen CPUs without a BIOS update...but you can't update the bios without a cpu so my question is as the title states, does this motherboard support the Ryzen 2700x out of the box without a firmware update?

This is the mobo in question: https://www.ebuyer.com/789970-msi-amd-ryzen-am4-b350-gaming-plus-atx-motherboard-b350-gaming-plus

New AMD Drivers seem to have washed out my screen.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:17 AM PDT

Title pretty much says it. Last night, I downloaded AMD's latest drivers for my MSI RX 480, 18.5.1. After I restarted my PC, the colors seemed a little washed out. Nothing super noticeable, the colors were all just more dull. I thought I might just be seeing things, but when I booted up my PC this morning, the colors were normal for a split second and then they went back to being dull, confirming my suspicion. Is there a good way to fix this without restoring windows to before the installation? There is another, newer "optional" driver update available, but I usually avoid those out of principle. I went ahead and installed the optional driver and still no change. Any information or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Being a console gamer for all my life, I need your wisdom today for my first build.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:38 AM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Mostly gaming. I'm especially a fan of the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, so I'm planning to mod them. I'm familiar with modding because I'm currently playing them on a gaming laptop, but I'm looking to build my PC around those especific type of games. I also play FPS games like Rainbow Six Siege and older titles but nothing too demanding perfomance-wise.

I'm also going to use my PC as a light workstation and for streaming (looking to use it to stream directly on a TV).

What king of performance are you looking for?

1920x1080 resolution, 60 fps. I'm horrified by stutters and unstability, so I'm looking for perfomance more than over-the-top graphics.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

~1500 CAN$ (I don't include the monitor in my budget)

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada.

    Worth swapping a GTX 760 out for a 1050Ti?

So I have two computers. One has a shitty pentium g3258 (yes its oc'd, dual cores just suck) but a 1050ti and the other has some older 3ghz i5 and a 760. The one with the i5 definitely runs games better but I think the 760 might be holding it back a little. Would it be worth it to swap the 1050ti into the i5 computer?

A couple of things, the memory is B-die right? I'm not married to the memory, motherboard or cooler but want to be able to push this system.

I also have a microcenter by me and could get a R7 1700 for $182 and/or the Asus Crosshair VI HERO X370 for $172 (tax included in both) What do you guys think is the best config right around this price point and is it worth the savings to use either parts from microcenter? Thanks!

    Simple Questions - June 01, 2018

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 05:17 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!
