    Becoming a GDE (ama request)

    Posted: 01 May 2018 08:18 AM PDT

I've been always curious about the GDE program (Google Developer Experts), and I'm sure there's many of you around here, so here's some questions for you:

    • How did you become a GDE?
    • What are your obligations as GDE?
    • What happens to your GDE status if you stop giving talks/sharing knowledge or even being an Android developer?
    • How has it affected your professional life?
    • What is the untold truth about the GDE program?

Also feel free to ask more questions.

Paging library adapter with multiple item types

    Posted: 01 May 2018 02:11 PM PDT

Are there any recommendations as how to implement this ? I have a room database that returns a DataSourceFactory. I can make a PagedList based on that DataSourceFactory and use it in a PagedListAdapter but I'm stuck if I need to add other types of items.

I thought of wrapping the room DataSourceFactory into another custom DataSource<Any> that would insert my custom items at the correct positions. But it looks like most of the interesting DataSource stuff has package level visibility (notably isContiguous) and I don't really want to build on top of non-public API...

Does anyone have a recipe to do this ?

Has anyone here switched from Web dev to native Android dev?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 12:33 PM PDT

I'd like to know what your experience was and maybe advice you'd give. I'm experienced ReactJS developer working on Web apps, but thinking of transitioning into Android app dev. It would be for a company, so I'm not self employed. Thanks in advance!

    In-app Billing caching

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:52 PM PDT

Some of the users of my app are complaining, that an item which is already bought (in-app payment) is just not recognised by the app if the network is switched off for a longer period of time.

I admit, I don't have a caching mechanism for the item in the app, because I thought that the own caching of the in-app billing is enough:

Because the Google Play client now caches In-app Billing information locally on the device, you can use the In-app Billing API to query for this information more frequently. The following In-app Billing API calls are serviced through cache lookups instead of requiring a network connection, which significantly speeds up the API's response time...

The question is whether an app internal caching for in-app Billing items is also needed, or because of security reasons better not?

Google suspended app because at the time of review, they saw an inappropriate photo in the app, that a user uploaded in violation of the app rules. Is there any way to alert Google when content is user submitted, so there's time to deal with bad users before they suspend the app?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:51 PM PDT

Basically, my app was suspended when I submitted an update because the app has a picture of a penis in it. The problem is, I didn't put that image there, a user posted it on the app. Despite this being against the app terms, and despite the fact that the image is gone, and the user banned, the app was still suspended.

Is there any way to let Google know that an app's content is user generated, so this kind of knee-jerk reaction can be avoided?

For comparison, this would be like if Google suspended the YouTube app because a user uploaded an inappropriate video to the platform.

Edit: app is marked as M (17+) due to the fact that it contains user generated content. Edit2: Google suspended the whole app, they didn't just block the update, so I can't just submit a new update.

Does anyone here put Disclaimers/Privacy Policies/Terms of Use/Legal Notices in their applications?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 12:24 AM PDT

Is it normal to put a disclaimer in your application stating something like you are not responsible for any issues associated with the download or use of this app? Is it normal for sole amateur developers to use disclaimers?

If so, what's the normal way to go about creating a disclaimer and putting it in your application? Do you actually put it inside the application itself, or can you do it separately somehow when you're uploading your APK to the store?

    App crashing because of BigDecimal

    Posted: 01 May 2018 10:27 AM PDT

I have this function in an activity where the first argument is bigDecimal and when I pass anything other than

    "1235"

Data in this format. It results in app crash.

Image of function is in comments.

I want to pass the string I am receiving using the intent class object.

The function is from visa checkout api ConfigurePaymentInfo.java class

    Function screenshot is in comments

If you need any more info just ask.

My motive is to pass the string retrieved from intent object into the BigDecimal constructor so that i can use it to show the results.

Avoiding 30% fee in Google Play.

    Posted: 01 May 2018 06:27 AM PDT

    Hello fellow devs!

Me and my friend are young devs and we made recently our first app. We are now in phase of testing. And I need your help!

Is there a way, how to avoid paying fee 30% in Google Play? Like people will pay for subscription in our page and than they will just log in app downloaded from store. I know "giants" like Uber and Spotify do the same to avoid this fee.

I know I will have to deal with taxes alone without Google or I can pay for platforms like Taxamo, which will do global VAT/GST compliance on digital service sales for me.( and it is less than 30%)

Is there someone who did this and have some experiences? How you deal with VAT/GST?

    Thank you!

Do you guys promote your apps, or do you let them naturally get downloads?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 05:25 PM PDT

Just wondering if most developers pay to promote their application or not.

Do you have to use a gmail account to create a Google Play Developer Account? And is it a good idea to create a business and use a business domain for your email and contact information, or just use a personal gmail account instead?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:28 PM PDT

Do most sole developers have a personal business with associated email accounts and bank accounts that they use to manage all their app development processes?

Would using your personal gmail account to create a Google Play Developer Account be out of the ordinary?

If you create a business with it's own email domain like myname@mybusiness.com, can you use that email to create a Developer Account?

Basically, if you're a sole developer what's the best way to manage your bank accounts and email accounts? Just use personal bank/email accounts, or create a business and keep it all separate? Or keep it all separate but not make a business?
