5400 RPM HDD fine for gaming?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:12 AM PDT

Load times aside I won't see in game performance dips right? I ordered all my parts and the HDD arrived and my heart sank when I saw it was 5400 RPM. I really don't want to wait another week to ship it back and get a 7200 RPM

Once again, load times are Irrelevent to me as I've been a console gamer and never really minded load times.

    How's this look? (1080ti i7-8700k build)

    Posted: 01 May 2018 09:01 AM PDT

Finally was able to nab the GPU I wanted for MSRP, so now I have to go crazy and buy everything else! Threw this build together, very new to building a PC so any guidance would be appreciated! If there's anything I still need, something that would improve the build, or save me a few bucks, please let me know! Looking for mostly gaming at ultra to max settings at 1440p for as long as possible and also fooling around with streaming/video editing/music programs.

Will upgrading from i5-3570k to Ryzen R5/7 or 8600k be a big performance jump? I could really use some advice

    Posted: 01 May 2018 08:51 AM PDT

    Hi

I've been running my i5-3570k, 16GB ddr3 with a sata SSD for the last five years and when I look at upgrading and I get stuck on current gen cpus not being any faster r as far as Mhz goes. (MSI R9 290x gpu) My cpu regularly run 80-100% on big games. My workload averages about 15-20%.

I'm trying to figure out how much better performance would be upgrading to current gen cpu+mb+ddr4+960evo. Spending $1k - $1.5k for a small performance boost just seems silly when I end up with a machine that seems nearly identical to what I already have. I'm also unsure what current gen gpu compares to the 290x.

Has anybody made this leap? Would I be better off just OCing the 3570k, putting in better cooling and getting a larger SSD to run games from exclusively? I'm on the stock cooler with temps of 70-73 at max load, ~40 at idle and 45-50 during regular work. I tried OCing when I first got the cpu but I had too many crashes so I went back to stock.

    Thanks

How can I make this build more cost efficient for my needs?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:51 PM PDT

Hi! I'm a Station Manager of a student TV station. I'm currently asking my SU for money for a livestreaming PC, and they've asked me to come to them with an in depth proposal.

The idea is that we input maximum 4 broadcast cameras into the computer via an SDI capture card in addition to an external sound desk. This is then streamed through livestreaming software on the PC.

I don't go to a uni with an unlimited budget, unfortunately. The fact they even wanted to consider this is a shock to me. Therefore I need to make this as cheap and cost effective as possible. This is where I'm hoping I might be able to get some help. I'm considering the parts below, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to PC hardware. Is there anywhere that I'm overkilling a bit? Somewhere I can save a bit of money?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Motherboard: ASUS LGA 1151 PRIME Z270-P Intel ATX Motherboard (£102)

    CPU: Intel Xeon E5-1650 v4 Processor (£525)

    RAM: Corsair CMK16GX4M2A2400C16 Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2400MHz C16 XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory Kit (£155)

SSD: 500GB Samsung 850 EVO Solid State Drive (£108)

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar WD5000AAKX BLUE 500GB SATA 3.5'' Hard Drive 16MB Cache (£30)

Graphics Card: NVIDIA Quadro P2000 5GB 4xDP High Profile (£452)

Capture Card: Magewell Capture Quad SDI (£679)

Apologies if I seem like an idiot... It's because I am. Any help would be very useful. Thanks for reading.

Tiny Power Sipping Gaming Rig - 6500T & GT 1030

    Posted: 01 May 2018 09:55 AM PDT

My main gaming rig used to be an mITX system in a Silverstone SG-05 with an overclocked Pentium G3258 and an AMD 7850. Although that system has long since been dismantled, I still had the case knocking around. When I noticed a clearance sale on a model of "thin-mitx" motherboard, I thought I'd pick one up and see what I could do with it.

For those who don't know, thin-mitx is a standard designed around a regular mITX motherboard with a number of alterations to reduce it's height profile and allow it's use in non-standard power environments. This particular board, the ASRock H110TM-ITX, uses laptop SODIMM memory mounted parallel to the board so it doesn't stick up and does away with ATX power connectors completely, instead having a laptop-style power brick connector on the rear panel and the option to connect a 12V power source internally. By opting for an mSATA SSD and a GPU that runs on motherboard power alone, the only cables in this system are the fans and front panel connectors. Without an internal PSU and with the HDD mounting cage removed altogether, this tiny mITX case feels huge to work in and looks almost empty!

    Specs:

    • ASRock H110TM-ITX (Thin-ITX)
    • Core i5 6500T (4C/4T, Base 2.5GHz, Boost 3.1GHz, 35W TDP)
    • 2x4GB DDR4 SODIMM Samsung 2400MHz (CAS 17, 1.2v)
    • MSI GT 1030 2GB LP OC (HDMI + DP model, G-Sync supported)
    • Samsung 850 EVO mSATA SSD 250GB
    • Killer AC Wireless 1535 (No antenna yet)
    • Silverstone SG-05 mITX case + Noctua NF-S12A PWM (107.5m3/h @ 17.8dB)
    • Silverstone NT08 115XP low profile CPU cooler (H 33mm, 65W max TDP @ 29dB)
    • Akasa 120W External PSU

In terms of gaming ability, the modest graphics card means modern AAA titles like Ghost Recon: Wildlands are simply unplayable on any detail settings at any resolution high enough to actually see what you're shooting at. However, once you get your expectations in check, older and less demanding games can really shine on this system, even at 1440p. I've had fully immersive gaming sessions playing Alien Isolation, Arkham City, Borderlands 2, CS:GO, World of Warships, XCOM2 and Fractured Butthole, albeit with a few graphics optimisation sessions to get everything running smoothly and looking acceptable.

The processor in this build is probably it's most unusual part after the motherboard. Intel's T-series processors are downclocked versions of their regular chips that use an altered turbo boost setup to keep their TDP under the target 35W. Even so, under Prime95 small-FFTs load nailing the package power consumption to it's upper limits, all cores turbo'd up to 2.7GHz, even touching 2.8GHz - hardly ground-breaking, but easily enough to handle everything I asked it to do while barely using any power - Superposition barely taxed the CPU at all, registering 17W package power and upping the turbo to it's 3.1GHz maximum when there was actually enough load to justify it (which wasn't often).

While mITX systems can often sound like vacuum cleaners, this one was pretty much inaudible until pushed hard enough to rev up the CPU or GPU fans. I put some images of dB measurements taken while idle and under load - even with the case open and the mic right beside it, the sound meter had trouble picking up enough to register over it's 30dB lower limit when the system was idle. Under stress test load that number picked up to 37-38dB, but that would still be acceptable for even for a regular-sized system under that sort of torture load. Power consumption was similarly low, dropping as low as 15W while completely idle and topping out at 70W under heavy combined CPU & GPU loads. Considering my OC'd G3258 pulled more that 70W on it's own, and this thing arguable outperforms that system in pretty much every way conceivable, those are some very impressive numbers that Intel and Nvidia have achieved. Amazingly, the Firestrike combined test peaked at 50W maximum power consumption measured at the wall!

I do have future plans for this system. I may custom build it a new case that loses all the dead space inside, just to improve it's portability (this is my gaming-at-friends-place system) or possibly some more tweaking of the fan curves might get things a little quieter, as the Noctua 120mm in the front is currently a little under-utilised and may be able to feed more cooler air to the CPU and GPU fans, allowing those noisy little beasts to slow down a little more. I specifically avoided getting a passively cooled GT 1030 as I knew the air flow situation in this case would make that tough to manage, especially if my plans for a console-style custom case build play out.

    Benchmarks Results:

Cinebench R15: Multi threaded: 475 Single threaded: 130 Firestrike: Overall: 3228 GPU: 3689 Physics: 6128 Combined: 1220 Time Spy: Overall: 1205 GPU: 1094 CPU: 2842 Superposition: (1080p Medium preset) Overall: 2552 Avg FPS: 19.09 Min FPS: 15.48 Max FPS: 24.58

Hope you found that interesting - thin-mITX boards seem to have extremely limited availability, and I've never seen anyone post actual gaming numbers from a T-series chip before. If you have any requests about quick benchmarks or tests you'd like to see numbers for (within reason, I have a full time job and have just started another build today!) then leave a comment below and I'll see what I can do!

EDIT: Should probably mention cost - the case and 120mm fan I already had, the motherboard was a sale item and the CPU was acquired secondhand from CEX (uk.webuy.com) with everything else bought new, so I'd guess the total spend was around £260-290.

Help! I don't know which processor to pick!

    Posted: 01 May 2018 12:09 PM PDT

I was planning to build a gaming PC in the summer but I have a dilemma, which processor would be best for my needs. I have slimmed down the picks to either a Ryzen 5 1600 or i7-7700k. The graphics card would be a GTX 1060 6GB. I plan to start a YouTube channel ( I need to be able to stream). I currently play Minecraft, Fortnite, Garry's Mod, and want to get into new titles in the future! I know the i7 might seem like overkill but I want the PC to be future-proof if I start playing newer games. Thanks for taking your time and feel free to help me out!

Haven't owned a PC since 2006 - building my first PC on Friday night because I'm tired of over priced Mac machines

    Posted: 01 May 2018 02:07 PM PDT

    Hey gang!

A little back story for those interested: I've been a Mac user since around 2006 primarily because I was a musician and everyone I knew had a Mac for Pro Tools. I also felt back then that the Mac OS was vastly less frustrating to use and and the creative software that came stock was insanely valuable and fun to use. However, I've been so frustrated by Apple the past couple years that I decided to replace my 2010 iMac with a custom PC build.

About my build: I'm not really a gamer (aside from playing some Hearthstone), so my build is more about having a killer machine for Pro Tools audio recording. I will also likely be doing some video editing down the line as well. That means I focused more on CPU and ram and less on GPU. I was also looking for a quiet machine since the computer will be in the same room I'm recording. Hence why I went for a passively cooled GPU that didn't have any fans. The GT 1030 seemed to be the best performing GPU for what I was looking for.

    Here's the build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/W9wCzY

    My questions for the community:

    1) Any concerns about cooling for this machine? Should I get an extra case fan? Since I won't have a high performance GPU, and I don't plan to overclock the CPU right away, it seemed like the Noctuna NH-D15 would be sufficient for the i7 8700K.

    2) If I did decide to upgrade the GPU down the line, would I need to change my cooling strategy? Would upgrading to GTX 1060 add a lot of heat to the case?

    3) Based on the parts I picked, is there anything I should look out for during the build? I've been researching as much as possible but still feeling nervous about putting it all together (most parts are here already but the case doesn't arrive until Friday).

I'm seriously so excited to put this beast together Friday night. Wish me luck!

Can I use AMD CPU with NVIDIA GPU to run G-Sync?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 11:05 AM PDT

I know that AMD uses the processor GPU for free sync and Nvidia uses the GPU for G-Sync.Right?

Edit: So the GPU matters but not the CPU and I can use AMD CPU with Nvidia GPU to get g-sync action.

Will this work for my needs?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 03:49 PM PDT

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-omen-by-hp-desktop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1060-1tb-hard-drive-brushed-aluminum/5759916.p?skuId=5759916

Saw this and it's within my budget - hoping this would work for gaming such as Overwatch and Fortnite! Only other thing I would use it for is internet browsing. I eventually plan to stream, so I assume I could add memory or always upgrade to i7 if need be. Just curious how this would perform otherwise and any thoughts!

    FreeNAS CPU Upgrade Decision Help

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:33 PM PDT

Thanks in advance for the help. I'm getting ready to upgrade my FreeNAS box. I'm down to ~3 processors to choose from but have been wracking my brain over it for a month now.

Existing use case and setup: I5-4590s, 16GB DDR3, 3x2TB HDD for serving Plex media, monthly PC backups (2 PC's, 2 phones), Modded Minecraft Server (FTB).

What I have found, which annoys me to no end, is Minecraft lag while generating new chunks (can't keep up errors). It only happens while in flight generating new chunks, but I want the horsepower to fly wherever without getting rubber banding or block lag or reduced as much as possible. Seems like current processor is the bottleneck.

Eventually i would like to run a Windows 2012/16 VM on it with Ark / Pixark game server as well, but thats really it. Nothing too fancy.

Here are the choices: Intel Xeon E3-1275 V6 Intel Core I7 8700k AMD Ryzen 2 2700X

I know for FreeNAS everybody says you need ECC RAM (Xeon), however the data stored is backed up offsite as well as externally from my RAID, and at the end of the day its mainly media. Our personal data is all backed up to cloud accounts as well as archive drives.

Was leaning towards 8700k or Ryzen 2700x since single and multithreading scores are high, but not sure how they interact or play well with FreeNAS.

Cooler Master Q300L GPU length help

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:22 PM PDT

I am thinking of buying this case to replace my old aerocool one and need help with whether my GPU will fit.

The Coolermaster site says the max GPU length is 360mm, my Asus RX580 is 297mm. However i have a Corsair H100i v1 aio cooler, it seems the thickness of the rad is 27mm and fans are 25mm thick. This radiator will only fit in the front of this case as the top hasn't enough clearance

so in theory it looks like it will fit but obviously i don't want to order the case if it wont all play ball. i could really do with the input of someone with the case or who has seen it in person

First-time builder here, and I can't get my PC to consistently boot.

    Posted: 01 May 2018 03:21 PM PDT

Here's a list of my components:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/lusciousalpaca/saved/2NrkTW

I was somehow able to put this thing together without completely fucking it, and when this machine runs, it runs almost flawlessly. I've already run several programs and hours worth of games on it with no hiccups. Problem is, half the time I can't even get it to power on.

Usually when I try to turn it on, nothing happens. Fans don't spin, lights don't light up, and it plays dead. The motherboard's standby LEDs are on though, so I know that it's receiving power, but it won't do anything past that. I've tried jumping the motherboard several times, but that only works as often as using the power button would. Its booting capability seems completely random.

At first I suspected ram compatibility/stability issues, so I've tried booting with different sticks of (compatible) ram, a single stick of ram, various combinations of ram in different DIMM slots. I've also tried booting with various ram clock speeds of 2133, 3000, 2666 MHz, etc.

I've triple checked all of my connections, updated my BIOS, I've made sure I'm not shorting out my motherboard, and I've re-seated the GPU and ram several times. I can't seem to find a way to make this thing consistently boot.

I'm actually typing from my build right now, because by some grace of god it decided to turn on for me this morning. And now I don't ever want to turn this thing off again, not until I can figure out how to fix this problem. I'm suspecting a faulty motherboard/ PSU, but I was wondering if you guys could give me little guidance on this issue.

Is This A Good PC Build? One of my friends said that the CPU and GPU could 'bottleneck'. I am VERY new to PC building so I don't know everything. Someone also said that an Intel CPU would be better, but I don't know what to pick. pls help?

thoughts about AMD Ryzen R5 2600x/R7 2700x vs Intel Core i5-8600K/i7-8700k for Gaming?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 04:40 AM PDT

    Hello fellas!

I'm trying to make a build for a friend, and i was checking the new Ryzen cpus. From what i've gathered they fare better in multi-thread performance while the Intel do best in single core speed. In the game benchmarks i found, the Intel usually do better (Arma III, Far Cry 5 etc.) even if just slightly.

I really, really like AMD, but it seems to me that, at least for gaming, Intel is still better as the difference in price is just about 10 €. But then again, the Ryzen series should be also safe from Meltdown and Spectre if i'm correct.

What do you guys think? What's best to check to evaluate a cpu's Performance?

Edit: I think i have a more precise idea now. I think i'd personally chose a Ryzen, but we'll see what my friend needs. Thank you guys very much for the feedback!

    Ryzen or Intel PT. 2

    Posted: 01 May 2018 12:55 PM PDT

I made a post about this yesterday. What I left out was what I'm going to use it for. This computer is going to be used for gaming and streaming. I also am trying to get into editing and photo shop. The main game I play is Rocket League. Also I wanna start playing PUBG & Fortnite and maybe some Rust and Ark. So would it be best to go with Ryzen or Intel for my computer?

Considerations for a 3 monitor setup all with DVI inputs? (non-gaming)

    Posted: 01 May 2018 02:31 PM PDT

I may be able to acquire some old 1920x1080 monitors from my workplace, since they've recently upgraded computers. I'd like to get three. Each monitor has a VGA and a DVI input. Are there any special considerations for purchasing a graphics card to ensure these work properly? If I get a DVI to DisplayPort cable, a DVI to HDMI cable, and a standard DVI cable, could I use a basic graphics card like this?

I mainly plan to have lots of datasets, spreadsheets, etc. open at once. Any gaming would be casual. I'm currently looking at a Ryzen 5 1600, B350 mobo, 16gb 3200mHz RAM, SSD & HDD setup. Thanks!

    Internet Troubles

    Posted: 01 May 2018 02:24 PM PDT

So I've got my first build up and running and it's running like a dream outside of one problem. I am experience extreme slowdown when it comes to download speed. My Internet normally has a 2.2 MB/s download speed and my new computer is seeing highs of 400-500 KB/s but generally hovers around 120 KB/s and even grinds to a halt fairly often.

My OS is Windows 8.1 for now (a friend of mine is going to help me upgrade to 10 for free because that's a thing that can still be done) and this is my network adapter

    TP-Link TL-WN881ND N300 Wireless WiFi PCI-Express Adapter card for pc https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0079XWMEI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8Ln6Ab4P98F30

I've tried updating my network adapter drivers and I still download at a snail's pace. I am willing to replace the adapter all together given that it was a $20 piece of hardware, I just want to explore all my options first. Any help would be much appreciated!

possible issue with new build benckmark results!

    Posted: 01 May 2018 09:02 AM PDT

    Hey guys & gals,

Just finished my build over the weekend. Wanting to run the benchmark to see how things are running & if I need to fix or adjust anything, but I keep getting stuck on this part of the process. Also, for some reason I can't boot directly to Windows 10. After turning on the PC, it automatically goes to bios & I must manually hit the Windows10 boot command. I've already tried disabling all other entries besides the SSD that has the OS on it.

Can't even fully run UserBenchmark: https://imgur.com/yMGdIgr

Got these results from another benchmark program: https://imgur.com/sdodfsu

Frist try with GeekBench (anyone know how these scores look?): https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/8107368

New graphics card low FPS and static sounds

I just got a 3gb single fan 1060 yesterday as an upgrade from an rn 460 and I hear a buzzing noise through my headset and other people can hear what sounds like screaming through my microphone. While playing league of legends I'm only getting about 50-60 FPS on very high settings and on fortnite I'm only getting about 90-110 on medium, anyone have any suggestions on fixing this?

    Advice on a new build

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:52 PM PDT

I ordered following a post on here over the weekend... after my i5-2500 system died. I don't play too many games currently, but I do want to try at some point down the road. And when I do, I would like to play at highest settings at 1080P. Parts I purchased so far:

    Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz

    G.Skill Ripjaws V series 15 GB DDR4 3000

    ASRock AB350 Pro4 AM4 AMD

    Cyorig H7 cooler

I have a shitty nvidia video card for playing 1080p videos which I will use until GPU prices drop, I'm not in a rush. Questions:

    1. Will my 450 w PSU be sufficient for new parts? will it be sufficient when I get a GPU(?)
    2. Which GPU should I get for highest settings at 1080P, maybe 144hz, maybe VR(probably not)?
    3. Which Monitor should go along with the GPUs mentioned above?
    4. Does the CPU/motherboard/cooler contain a thermal paste or do I purchase this separately?
    5. Can I overclock my new CPU with my board n cooler?

    Thanks in advance!
