(AMA) The TongFang GK5CN aka "that new Clevo" Posted: 01 May 2018 04:12 AM PDT So folks I've been hearing a lot of chatter about a new bezel-less Clevo notebook here (and elsewhere around the Net) lately. To be exact, this thing: https://i.imgur.com/9HzHtz1.jpg Well, guess what, it's actually NOT a Clevo. It's the TongFang GK5CN aka the Illegear Onyx, the Cyberpowerpc Tracer III, the Aftershock Apex-15 and the XMG Neo 15 - and is specced to rival the GS65/Aero 15 v8 (at least the 1060 varients of, anyway). And who the heck is TongFang? Well, while they're NOT Clevo, they're an ODM, just the same, and they've been making laptops on contract for some of the big names for a while now. Thing is, they seem to have only entered the "barebones" market outside China since a few years back. Hence their relative obscurity (just try Googling "TongFang"). Not that they have a decent web presence to begin with (their "website" is atrocious). Additionally, I have also taken delivery of one of these babies myself since last week (in the i7-8750H + 1060 config), and I've been benching and testing it hard for a bit now. https://i.imgur.com/X1oKQ8L.jpg So, ask me anything guys. EDIT: Just to get this out of the way, this little number UNFORTUNATELY does not come with a TB3 port. Just FYI. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 May 2018 05:58 AM PDT So I've been looking at all different systems. I need something I can use from my easy chair that will handle Photoshop and minor gaming. I play things like The Sims, Cities Skylines, Darkest Dungeon, Slay the Spire, so nothing earth shattering. I use my PS4-PRO for any AAA titles. I DO have a pretty good desktop, but it's upstairs in my office and I don't get up there as much as I used to unless I have to work at home. So, I want something light, that will play those few games, and cost in the neighborhood of 700-1000 dollars(lower side is more better). If it's available at Bestbuy or Microcenter all the better because then I can pay it off over 12 months with no interest. But that's not required, just easier on my budgeting skills. Any thoughts? A 2:1 seems great, but are there any that are in that range, boot up at SSD speeds, and will run what I need them to? This was what I was looking at for starters, but it seems like way too much and as I said, I was interested in 2:1 and a bit lighter with actual battery life. Thanks in advance for any help! Posted: 01 May 2018 09:36 AM PDT TL:DR: the post's title. + is there a place to buy gaming laptops online that has 0% APR financing options over a period of 24 months or more? I've waited 15 years to buy a gaming rig. I finally have the money and a gaming laptop that can be carried around throughout a workday meets my current lifestyle needs. Being a neophyte to everything one should know before dropping cash on a laptop or computer, I've spent months reading up on things. Anyway. I really would like to purchase the new MSI GS65. BestBuy has a very nice deal. I've looked deeply into the differences between its model (the 037) and others. I figured for the price, I should grab it and then upgrade RAM, hard drive slots, and even seek a thermal repaste as needed and down the road. I called BestBuy and asked if they do any of that. Hard "no" to the thermal repaste. But they said they could do RAM and hard drive. I attempted to explain that it appears that the RAM and hard drive slots are behind the motherboard. They said they don't touch motherboards, but that their repair expert said that "99% of laptops have those areas accessible by taking off the back panel or the keyboard." I wasn't really reassured. Because this model seems to be the other 1%. And of course I'm still shit out of luck with the thermal repaste. So my question is... is it typical to be able to find a business in any given city/community that can deliver those upgrades. Relatedly, I've looked into HIDevolution because they will do the thermal repaste and upgrade the other parts upon purchase... but i can't drop that much money on the initial buy. Also, can anyone recommend a place to buy laptops that offers a payment plan or partners with a company that has a really good financing option? Right now I can get 24-month financing interest free at BestBuy. [link] [comments]

Gamer seeking a laptop that is functional for both work and 'pleasure'. Posted: 01 May 2018 05:22 AM PDT So my total budget is preferred around £1.5k. I could/can go higher but only for the 'one'. I'm UK based. Definitely seeking a work/gaming operational piece of hardware. This laptop will replace my shitty work HP low budget piece of garbage but I want to use it for high end gaming if possible. Thinness/weight isnt overly important but it would be a nice to have. Windows plz.

Powerspec 1710 G-SYNC Question Posted: 01 May 2018 11:39 AM PDT When you overclock the panel to 100hz, do you lose the ability of gsync? I cant even have a game like Rocket League play without screen tearing/drops. V-Sync is the only answer, but I dont want to deal with the input lag. This seems like something g-sync would fix, and not being able to have both 100hz and gsync makes this laptop not nearly worth what I paid for... (not to mention the multiple issues ive had with it) [link] [comments]

New GL703GS Laptop by Asus? Is it good? Posted: 01 May 2018 07:32 AM PDT I really want to like everything about it. I've even visited a local shop to check the keyboard for myself on an older brother of this model; the keyboard and the laptop's looks felt great to me. The specs are also killer: 6-core processor, GTX 1070, 16GB Ram, SSD, 12Volt anti-dust fans as a bonus, I really like all of that. What's with the "144hz 3ms IPS-Type G-Sync display" though? The 144hz part is awesome, since I plan to game a lot. The 3ms delay seems to be amongst the very best as well; The fastest TN Monitor is 1ms, IPS - 4ms and they are glorious. G-Sync is great. But what's with the "IPS-Type" part? Does it really have an IPS display with a 3ms delay? Or is it a really good TN panel that will still look great? This is something that worries me, as a display is arguably one of the most important things about a laptop. Link to the laptop on amazon: [link] [comments]

Is it worth to choose an i7-8550u over i5-8250u in this scenario? Posted: 01 May 2018 10:53 AM PDT So, my father are making me choose a laptop. Between the options that I was given. These 2 laptop specs are the choices that I like but I am having a hard time thinking if its better to go with the costlier Laptop over the other. I am going to use this for College, some light gaming(like SMITE,R6Siege or something as long as it runs low settings 30-60 fps) and some emulation(like Citra/Cemu/PCSX2) The first one is an Acer Aspire 5 A515-51G-53NF i5-8250u 6gb Ram MX150 2GB Costs around 554ish USD while the other is an Acer Aspire 5 A515-51G i7-8550u 12gb Ram MX150 2gb which costs around 744 usd About the other specs of those 2 laptops, it looks like they almost have the same specs except for the above. Also, high likely I will be stuck with the laptop for a good 3-4 years and desktop isn't an option because of... Parents reasons. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 May 2018 06:41 AM PDT Will be mostly used for general use (videos and web browsing). Also low level gaming such as football manager. Any cheaper recommendations would be helpful. Thanks [link] [comments]
Acer Aspire M5-583P-6423 upgrades Posted: 01 May 2018 09:48 AM PDT I was recently handed down an Acer Aspire M5 ultrabook. Now, I had already upgraded the RAM to 8gb and the storage to an SSD. What I can't find out is if I could add a cellular card, or upgrade to a combo wifi/bt/lte miniPCIe card. If that even exists. Can anybody help me out with this? Thanks! Buying a new laptop for college Posted: 01 May 2018 02:11 AM PDT Hey guys! I've been searching for a while on Amazon, planning to buy a new laptop from the US. My main goal would be serious coding, along some moderate gaming(I'd like to try Nier: Automata or Witcher 3) and watching videos. I don't think portability is an issue, since I think I am able to carry it. Until now, I've found three options. *ASUS VivoBook Pro Thin & Light Laptop, 17" Full HD *ASUS VivoBook Thin and Light Gaming Laptop, 15.6" Full HD The first option seems perfect for me, however, it's a bit too expensive. I would have gone for something up to 1200$. The next ones seem fine too, but their 4h battery life concerns me. Moreover, I can't decide what's more important, screen size or a slightly better CPU. I've been trying to avoid those laptops who scream "GAMING", full of red flashy stuff. I prefer a more elegant look, which is why the ZenBook seemed pleasing to me in the first place. Do you guys have any opinion on those 3? [link] [comments]
Need advice on decent gaming laptop in germany Posted: 01 May 2018 05:18 AM PDT Hello! Deals on the MSI GL63 (73 also if not for the big screen) 8RD-012 caught my attention the most till now. Problem is, there are no reviews or even ratings on this thing. Also, it's hard to campare it to anything as there simply is nothing in the pricerange with a i7 8750h and GTX 1050ti. Anyone got a clue about this machine? Or maybe a alternative suggestion? Tanks! Obligatory: I'am looking for a working/gaming laptop. I'am a student working with 3D Cad software, occasional 3D rendering and intend to causally play PUBG from time to time. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 May 2018 04:49 AM PDT Hi all, Now, I go into playback devices, and my laptop (Razer Blade 2017) mic is detected, and I successfully switch to my Modmic 5 when I plug it in, both seem to be working fine, but I can not record audio in any apps. I've tried Discord and Audacity, neither work. Please help. I reinstalled W10, and it worked for a few days, but now the issue is back. This has never happened to me outside of my Blade. Thanks and Regards, Vizz. [link] [comments]
How would a AMD 9720p handle running games on low settings? Posted: 01 May 2018 03:39 AM PDT I have looked into the Lenovo Ideapad 320 that includes the APU. I would get better, but I'm on a budget for now. I was wondering if the APU makes the purchase reasonable for small gaming on low settings? [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Apr 2018 05:48 PM PDT I am looking for a cooling pad for my ultrabook and was about to purchase the "cooler master notepal u3" but I realized it fits 13"-17" laptops which would be far too large for my laptop. Are there any small cooling pads that wouldn't leave me with a bunch of un utilized space? Thanks for any advice. [link] [comments]
