Linux Rooting Android phone from Kubuntu

    Rooting Android phone from Kubuntu

    Posted: 01 May 2018 09:24 AM PDT

Hello. I've been trying to root my LG V30 for a while now and the main issue I've come across is that all the "One Click Root" programs are built for Windows or Mac computers and I have had zero luck running them with Wine or PlayOnLinux. I was going to try running one of the root programs in a virtual Windows 10, but yet more I couldn't get a virtual Windows 10 to work at all through VirtualBox (I can share the error code later if that would be helpful). I'm less concerned with making VirtualBox work than I am with simply finding a better root alternative.

I would think the relation between Android and Linux would make such a thing pretty simple, but that hasn't been the case for me. So, fellow Android + Linux users who have rooted their device, what did you have to do?

I haven't the slightest idea about computer science but I want to switch to Linux

    Posted: 01 May 2018 10:25 AM PDT

I'm not that good with computers and even less so when it comes to operating systems, I have no idea about the relationship between the hardware and the OS and how it's possible to swap it out for something else. I don't know what a kernel is, or a distro, or anything like that. I really want to learn how to use Linux but I feel like I'd be too many steps ahead of myself if I tried and end up nuking my computer. Moreover I don't know how well I'd adjust to Linux's file management system and how I'd use all the programs I currently have on an entirely new system.

Does anyone know where I should go to start educating myself about the basic way computers work and how I can understand how to start to use Linux? I have Windows 10 on a Lenovo laptop if that helps. Thank you guys

    A couple questions...

    Posted: 01 May 2018 12:44 PM PDT

Hi, thanks for clicking on my post. I have been told by one of my friends to try and dual-boot Linux on my laptop but I have a few questions.

    1. First things first. I attempted to do this myself but I was unsure on the differences between builds, and is there a build you would recommend for a noob like me?

    2. Of all the tutorials I have seen, one thing they have in common is the step of using a flash drive/USB stick. My question is this, if I were to put Linux on my USB and use it for said purpose, what happens if I were to remove the drive? I would assume that, obviously, without the program being directly installed to the device, Linux would not work. But will it damage the system/drive or maybe the copy of Linux?

    Thanks!

Replaced W10 with Deepin, mouse cursor moves around whenever I tap/double tap touchpad

    Posted: 01 May 2018 12:31 PM PDT

So, hey there! It's my first time using Linux and it has been 3 hours so far, loving it a lot! I'm using Deepin 15.5, recommended by friends and a college teacher. However, I've noticed that my mouse cursor slightly jumps around whenever I tap or double tap the touchpad, kinda making it imprecise because sometimes the cursor moves away from what I want to click. Never had this problem on Windows. My laptop is a Dell Latitude E6420 with a Synaptics touchpad. Can anyone help me?

Performance issues on Linux while playing video files.

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:12 AM PDT

I recently configured my laptop with dual boot Linux Mint 18.3 and Windows 10. I noticed a pretty significant performance loss in Linux while playing video files, and generally the bigger/higher res they are, worse it gets. I use VLC player on both OS and while on Windows I have no problems with rapid jumps, fast forward etc, on Linux it has a longer delay and sometimes the whole system freezes without response.

    I have a i7 7700hq 8GB RAM and a GTX1050 TI with updated drivers on both OS.

    Removing Windows from dual boot

    Posted: 01 May 2018 02:24 PM PDT

I've decided to move fully into Linux and want to delete Windows 10 from my computer, but I wanted to make sure I know what I'm doing first.

I have Ubuntu and Windows 10 installed on different hard drives, so no partitioning was needed. In this case, would this just be a matter of formatting the drive that Windows is installed on and updating Grub?

    Advice on rsync transfer speed

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:53 PM PDT

I originally posted this on a networking sr but it was deleted.

I used rsync to transfer 2,359,421,786 worth of photos from a USB3 connected DAS at my iMac to a PC running Solus Linux. Both machines are 1000Mb/s and are hardwired Ethernet connections via gigabit switch. The transfer speed was only 14,728 bytes/sec. Is that a reasonable transfer speed or is that really slow?

    Plex app Profile for UFW

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:02 PM PDT

I am adding nextcloud/owncloud (still haven't made my mind up) and part of the tutorial suggested to use ufw. It was smooth to set up with my samba shares and get it working with xrdp. But I found out none of the smart tv's in my house could connect with plex. I have read that you can just allow port "sudo ufw allow 32400" and plex will work, but during my search I found that you can make profiles for ufw. man ufw shows that you can create a new profile using " ufw app update --add-new <name> ". My question is how would I get information into that profile? I know it is stored in /etc/ufw/applications.d/ and I can find the existing profiles using vim but it won't allow my to edit the profiles.

Edit: This is the plex info I want to enter into a profile

In which drive my new applications will save?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 06:07 AM PDT

Today I am installing ubuntu 18.04LTS as standalone OS. All my files from D and E drive are backed up. In windows when I install new application, it asks me where to install it like C: D: or E:

1-Is there same mechanism when I install new application in Ubuntu?

2-Can I chose a drive in which I have to install new application? If yes then how?

Stuck on loading screen, need some advice.

    Posted: 01 May 2018 11:49 AM PDT

    Good evening Reddit.

I have just installed Elementary OS on my Asus ROG GL752vw.

As many others around the world wide web, I have reached a point where I am stuck on the slash screen of eOS.

I have done an installation of eOS and everything was working fine AFTER the installation, so happy as I am I go to the terminal to update.

    I used:

    sudo apt-get update

    sudo apt-get upgrade

I seemed to work fine and I was told to reboot the system, and from here it went down hill.

As I hit reboot, everything froze so I had to chose the laptop, no sweat I thought I will look at that after the reboot.

I went ahead and booted the machine, and as soon as it hit the slash screen it was stuck, so once again I had to choke the machine.

Now I went to google and found out nomodeset might do the trick, and it did however this is not a durable option.

I might suspect that it has something to do with my Nividia graphic card (NIVIDIA GeForce GTX960M)

But I don't know, I am just taking a long shot, however I did manage to get this picture:

Could a kind soul put me in the right direction?

    Best regards.

At times, upon wake, it takes really long for my Bluetooth devices (mouse and keyboard) to connect to my ThinkPad T430.

    Posted: 01 May 2018 11:13 AM PDT

I'm using Linux Mint Cinnamon on a ThinkPad T430. Turning off Bluetooth on my computer, and turning it off on the mouse and keyboard doesn't get it to work. When I go into Bluetooth Manager (Blueman), I see the orange, green, and blue signals flashing for some time, and then they stop and just stay off. It's happening to both my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Could this be a software issue or a hardware issue, and how would I know? I can't really test it, long-term, on another computer, as this only happens during random wakes from Suspend mode.

    Dunst

    Posted: 01 May 2018 10:38 AM PDT

Hi, I've asked for a bar replacement and I was recommended dunst.

How can I configure it so appart from showing notification it shows:

    • Volume
    • Date and Time
    • Free Disk Space and Space Used
    • CPU, GPU including GPU Used Memory
    • Free Memory and Used Memory
    • Weather

I want it to be displayed while pressing a key and then fade

Updated in real time, because of the time and temp monitoring.

Behaves the same in terms of blur/opacity has any other app using compton.

I've tried searching but couldn't find anything.

How to run command on remote server that stays running after closing terminal

    Posted: 01 May 2018 05:46 AM PDT

    Hey folks,

I'm using terminal to SSH into a server at uni and run a program via command line, how can I get this to keep running if I close my terminal.

The commands themselves are general bioinformatics tools e.g <program> <input> <output> and any relevant options

So the workflow I'm trying to achive is: shh to remote machine > Command for remote machine > close terminal > come back to results however many hours/days later

would nohup or disown work here? or should I be writing a script to run on the server in conjunction with one of those commands?

edit: Cheers everyone I'll check those out

edit2: tmux worked wonders, thanks again all who reccomended it!

Fund/pay someone to write a program for Linux?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 05:39 AM PDT

I would need a graphical download manager that handles one-click-hoster similiar to Load! or JDownloader.

How can I "hire" someone to do that? And what would be an appropriate amount of money?

    Thanks.

Best distro for MacBook Pro 9,2

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:10 AM PDT

So I'm trying to choose best option to install on my MBP9,2. A guy from my job said it's better to choose from ubuntu/debian, but he never installed it on any mac, so he suggested to google which one could be better. After some time searching I found, both ubuntu/debian got issues, especially with wireless, which you can solve with free drivers, but 5ghz is only paid now. Currently I think, fedora is the best one or I just didn't find that many issues with it. So I'm still in search for the best option in terms of compatibility and would gladly receive any help.

What is the best way to securely transfer files and opening and editing OneNote files on a dual boot consisting of Win 10 and a Linux distro?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:04 AM PDT

Totally new to Linux, I never used one before. I am planning on doing a clean install of my HDD. That is clean it out completely so no malware remains and install a dual boot system on the 1Tb HDD. Half of it will go to Windows for gaming only while the other half will go for a privacy OS which is linux based possibly QubesOS (any other secure OS suggestions are welcome).

    I need a way to:

    • Open and edit OneNote files on the Linux Environment.

    • A Linux OneNote substitute for migrating to Linux. It should have the capability to record store and organize digital evidence (like OneNote) and legal presentations and organize it in such a way that it can be presented as solid admissible evidence in court.

    • Transfer securely (without malware or spyware attached to the files) files from the Windows environment to the Linux environment.
