In the CLI how do (from WIN7) map a drive to win XP’s c:\windows default share

Is there a way to change Windows Photo Viewer's background from white to black?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 06:57 AM PDT

I run Windows 7 with a dark theme, so the white background breaks my eyes. I tried some replacements (FastStone, XnView, IrfanView) but they aren't as simple as what WPV is.

I'm fine with the sound setting in the taskbar being a part of the UWP Settings app, but can we please have icons put back for devices?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 04:38 PM PDT

The drop down menu sucks compared to the "old" Win32, Control Panel sound settings dialogue. Having an icon for SPDIF, Aux Speaker and TV/Monitor, made recognising and switching much faster and easier, as you'd just think, "Receiver -> SPDIF, TV -> Monitor, Speakers -> Sound card aux".

Having to read the device ID from a standard drop down vs. a scrolling list of icons and IDs is just terrible in comparison.

Ironic but vindicating: Google is quietly copying the Windows desktop paradigm in ChromeOS

    Posted: 02 May 2018 04:19 PM PDT

Nearly 8 years ago, Google banned Windows internally, and Linux/Mac fans love to diss our desktop UI.

Yet, lo and behold, Google is pretty much implementing the Windows desktop paradigm wholesale in ChromeOS, with nary a nod to MacOS, Gnome, KDE, etc. Let's see:

    1. App icons and on a taskbar? Check.
    2. Time, battery, etc. in same taskbar as 1) and to the right in a System Tray-like area? Check.
    3. Windows 10 Action Center ripoff? Check.
    4. Minimize, Restore, and Maximize window buttons? Check.
    5. A central, Start Menu-like listing of apps, conveniently located at the bottom left? Check.

In the latest development, ChromeOS is now adding the revolutionary feature of taskbar window previews, which Windows has had for nearly a decade.

And no, the excuse that they're just trying to make it familiar to Windows users doesn't fly, for several reasons:

    1. ChromeOS' primary market so far has been K-12, who are likely to have the least long term Windows experience - and hence entrenched familiarity - of any demographic.
    2. Google has always preferred to burn everything to the ground and start from scratch than build on old concepts. Witness, for example, their (now abandoned) Allo service despite the preexistence of the perfectly viable Hangouts.
    3. Google is extremely engineering-driven, which means this paradigm is being implemented on its technical merits, not for internal political convenience. Hilarious for all the Mac users who swear they're so much MORE productive on MacOS than on Windows.

Ergo, the fact that ChromeOS is choosing the Windows 10 paradigm vindicates Microsoft's vision of desktop computing.

Just something I thought we should celebrate :) Cheers!

Can I legally use MSBuild/MSVC in my situation?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 05:57 PM PDT

Hey there guys, I came here to ask since you guys might know better than me, but I'm currently employed by an organization that reserves the right to claim works I make, even in my off time. Note that doesn't mean that they automatically get them.

But the question is, if I'm developing things for myself, am I legally allowed to use the freely provided MSBuild/MSVC for personal projects? Do they have to be open source? I'm a Unix guy at heart, so I'm more than likely just going to open source them anyway, but the option to make projects closed source is always nice.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what “Windows Server 2007 Disk Cleaner” is?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 10:12 AM PDT

Had an applicant's CV with "Operating System Knowledge: Windows Server 2007 Disk Cleaner" on it.

It had all the usual OS' listed under experience too, but no one I've spoken to has any idea what on earth this one could even be... Google also has told us nothing. Any clues?

Windows forces me to use Windows Hello everytime I log in

    Posted: 02 May 2018 11:54 AM PDT

This started with new April Update. Every time I go to the login menu (the screen with profiles), above password input, there is text, that says, that I can use my password to activate Windows Hello. I use the password (it's my only login method) and windows show the annoying Setup Windows Hello screen - that I cannot exit without clicking through multiple other screens. This wouldn't be problem if this happened only once, but this happens every time I log in, it doesn't matter how many times I rejected it. How can I completely turn off this dialog?

EDIT: I have found workaround: The first password user enters have to be invalid, the second one may be the right one. This doesn't open the annoying Windows Hello Dialog. But I still think, there may be better way how to do this.

Script / App /Anything to help sort a giant pics folder

    Posted: 02 May 2018 03:17 PM PDT

Using Windows 8.1 on a laptop. I've a folder in an external HDD that has tens of thousands of pics in a single folder. I don't wanna get into how this happened but it did, unfortunately. Now ANY action on this folder, including wanting to move it to another external HDD for archival, leads to Windows Explorer locking up and not allowing me to do anything else on the laptop until I cancel the action.

I was wondering if there's a script or an app or anything else i can use that basically breaks up this giant folder into small subfolders of say 250 files each, just so I, and more importantly Windows, can work with it. There doesn't have to a sorting order, just pick the first 250 files and move them to a subfolder named 001 and so on...

    Please help.

    Signatures on Mail app

Doesn't it bother anyone that the Mail app doesn't have support for HTML signatures? I was really hoping I'd be able to use that app as my daily driver.

Is Windows 10 worth it from Windows 7?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 02:17 PM PDT

    Hi guys!

I am debating upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7. I tried to google this question and everything I found was biased one way or the other and no clear answer was really given.

Do y'all think that I should just do a clean install of Windows 7 or should I bite the bullet and upgrade to windows 10? I have had Windows 7 since 2011, which was when I built my PC. I am not having any errors with it, but 7 years of buildup is starting to annoy me. I would like to start fresh. I have already made backups and lists of programs I want to reinstall so it will be a smooth process either way.

I am not sure if it makes a difference, but I am using a 64gb SSD as my boot drive and a 1tb hard drive for programs.

If there is anything I am not considering then please let me know. If I am posting this in the wrong place/ should post it in other places for more answers, let me know.

    Thank you!

    Reformatting laptop without a CD

    Posted: 02 May 2018 01:53 PM PDT

Hi. I purchased a Dell computer five years ago that came with Windows 8.0. I installed 8.1, then the free Windows 10 upgrade. At the time of purchase, Dell stopped giving out CDs with their PCs, stating that you can reformat from another drive partition instead. Except, I have zero idea how to do that, and despite defragging and devirusing, etc., my PC - that has never been reformatted since time of purchase - is running noticeably slower.

In this scenario, what steps do I take to reformat my laptop to a clean Windows 10 (complete reformat, no files preserved)? Thanks :)

(Not good with computers. Sorry >_<)

How stable is using a kaby lake processor on windows 7?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 01:53 PM PDT

I remember around a year ago I read that there's a way to make kaby lake and ryzen processors work on windows 7, and I'm thinking about finally upgrading my processor, but I don't trust windows 10, even to this day. So, how stable is using windows 7 with a kaby lake processor?

Reinstalling windows because of a trojan and ran into a problem..

    Posted: 02 May 2018 09:58 AM PDT

Hi guys, im reinstalling windows 7 on my pc because i found a trojan on my pc. As I was installing windows I encountered this https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/224355040083705856/441047854115454976/JPEG_20180501_212327.jpg . I didnt create any of these partitions, and I formatted my whole hdd; i got no clue why there are multiple msr + system partitions. Disk 0 (my ssd) still has windows on it and I was planning to format the whole thing from windows installation then reinstall windows on it. I've reinstalled windows before and never encountered these partitions. After a little research on my part, I think that these partitionss were created by windows installation and that if I reinstall windows then evertthing will be ok. My hypothesis however doesnt explain why my disk 1 (hdd) has the msr partition on it tho because it was formatted and shouldnt have anythinf on it. I would like 2nd thoughts on if I should delete those partions. Also, i woukd also like to know if it is safe to format the ssd and hdd using my compromised system because of the spyware that caused me to reinstall windows in the first place. Thanks for the help guys. P.s. im typing this on my phone so sorry for the wall and i will quickly respond to any questions

How do I fullscreen/maximize Magnifier in docked mode.

    Posted: 02 May 2018 01:27 PM PDT

I'm a teacher and I use my computer for demonstrating software. Because of recent hardware changes to accommodate my gaming club, I can't use screen mirror(SteamVR doesn't like it) and have resorted to using OBS when sharing my main screen to the projector. However, when using stock fullscreen magnifier zooming in causes severe clipping since the projector is acting as an extended display with OBS preview. I found that Magnifier has a "Docked mode" which behaves how I want ideally, but I can't get it to maximize/fill the screen with the dock. Any way to make it do that? Or should I result to different magnifier software/OBS studio plugin(if available).

Windows alternative for Mac's Photos (iPhoto)

    Posted: 01 May 2018 08:58 PM PDT

So it seems that I'll be moving my parents from their old and shitty Mac Mini from 2009 to a more modern computer. Apple didn't update Mini since 2012 and there's not even a rumor that there might be one in the future.

The only piece of software that is being always used and is OSX only is Photos. Used for importing photos from cameras, organization and very light photo editing. If you ever used it, you'd agree that Photos is pretty damn good at it.

Now, what's a good replacement for it on Windows platform? Googling around always brings me to Adobe Lightroom. Seems overly complicated and there's no way in hell I'm paying monthly for software. Is there anything that's attractive and simple to use?

Should I go back to windows 7?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 12:31 PM PDT

I've recently found out that I can download the windows 7 iso from Microsoft for free. Because of this, I've considered going back from windows 10. However, I don't have any spare drive to back my stuff up on (my games are on a separate drive but there's no more room) is it worth losing my data? I don't have TOO much on there but it's always a hassle setting a computer up for the first time again.

    Fax advice in 2018

    Posted: 02 May 2018 11:33 AM PDT

I have a small business, an insurance agency. I send less than 10 faxes per month. We used to have a fax machine with a separate phone line. That 2nd line was costing $80/month or $960/yr. It wasn't worth it. I run Windows 7.

If it were you, would you buy a fax modem that plugs into the computer, or get a "real fax machine"? Either way it will share a land line, I am not paying $80 for a second landline again.
