My computer's hard drive is too small for the Windows 10 update... can I use Linux? Posted: 02 May 2018 10:35 AM PDT I am just sick of Windows at this point. I have tried 8+ times to do the update: plugging in external hard drives, deleting programs including Office to make space, doing stuff in Command Prompt. Every single attempt ends with an error message and/or it demanding that I connect an external drive that is already connected I have no files I need on this laptop, and I'm basically ready to give up. I want to clean everything off a USB I have, and use it to install Linux. I have a few questions:
Thanks! Sorry for being a noob. :) [link] [comments] |

Any linux distros i've tried doesnt work well Posted: 02 May 2018 12:32 PM PDT Hi, first of all, English is not my native language so I'll try my best. I've got a pavilion 15 power, and I want to learn and know about linux, so I downloaded the ISO( first elementary, then Ubuntu ) and boot it into my USB. I installed them, and both have the same problem. The two gets freezed at certain point. Elementary got freezed two times during the installation, then I could install it but it freezed randomly( don't remember exactly when) so I came back to Windows for a few months. Yesterday I downloaded Ubuntu, installed it today, apparently without any trouble. But when it has finished the installation and asked me to reboot my system it goted freezed, so I turned off the laptop with the power button, then power it again, it seems normal again. I've even open Mozilla without any problem, but then y click on the VPN tab and it got freezed, repeat the same process, opened the keyboard setting to set shortcuts and freezed again. I even tried to install Ubuntu without the "third party application and drivers" options but it doesn't seems to work. I've never asked for helps in forums, because I usually find the answer in other thread, but this is not the case. If anyone can help me I would be really thankfull! [link] [comments] |
Dual-boot setup step by step? Also I want to ask for your opinions. Posted: 02 May 2018 08:07 AM PDT Hello, I decided to ditch window$ & join the Linux community yesterday. Good day everyone! I have fresh installed Mint, but its Cinnamon interface doesn't seem to suit me (too squarish for my taste, lol). Also the size of panel & things is not big enough, even when I set them to the max. But above all, the main problem is that I can't type my own language after installing several East Asian packages. This is a deal breaker. So I figured, the best time to distro jump is when everything is new & I don't have anything to fear of losing. I've read about the recent release of Ubuntu 18.04, and aside from 'linuxy' technical things that I don't really understand, it being an LTS & having night time feature like win10 is great for a general user. Besides, the mere name Bionic Beaver sounds [insert any adjective you want] enough to even get on a T-shirt :) My rig has only 120GB of SSD hard disk, so this is my plan & my reasons for it:
OK so that's the plan. Being a noob, I'd like to ask you a lot of questions.
Thank you very much! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2018 01:44 PM PDT Hi, how can I make these apps autostart?

Cant login with user whose home directory is named different than their username Posted: 02 May 2018 01:17 PM PDT im trying to create a user that has a different name than their home directory, however i cannot login as that user once it is created. i can create users just fine if their username is the same as their home directory name, below are my terminal commands: when i try to login i get:
however this will work completely fine if i just name the user 'clientx' instead of 'clientx_client', but i cant. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2018 09:27 AM PDT I live in a country with severe privacy human rights violations. I am planning on dividing my 1TB HDD in half and installing Windows on 500GB that will only be used for gaming and using the rest 500GB for all other work under a secure Linux environment. The distro should be easy to use as I never used linux before and have no idea about computer science. It should also be secure and private. My questions are:

Which Linux Distro is the best option for my very old laggy laptop? Posted: 02 May 2018 03:16 AM PDT Hey guys! I have a Intel Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM, 150GB HDD old laptop that I'm not using because of his incredible lag. Which Distro is the better option for my laptop? I'm actually on Windows 7 and this is an unbearable suffering. I've heard that Linux is the better option but since I'm not an expert... [link] [comments] |

Get linux without resetting computer? Posted: 02 May 2018 11:13 AM PDT I had a Chromebook that I downloaded and installed Ubuntu on. I got a shiny new Windows 10 laptop for Christmas that I'm in love with, and I realized I never got any distro of linux on here. I don't want to have to reset my laptop, but I will if it's necessary. I was wondering if there's a way to get any linux distro on here without a reset. Thanks [link] [comments] |
What's the difference between different shells? Posted: 02 May 2018 07:12 AM PDT This question may sound stupid but I'm confused and don't have a background of programming. bash, ksh, zsh, csh, etc Where they differs? Why they differs? In which aspect they differs? [link] [comments] |
Wifi disconnects randomly - advice / suggestions? Posted: 02 May 2018 10:56 AM PDT This seems like a very common problem that has been asked here often. I apologize for the redundancy but couldn't really find a solution in any prior posts so I thought I'd describe my current situation and ask for any advice / pointers / suggestions. I have this wifi card in my computer: Gigabyte - GC-WB867D-I PCI-Express x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter and it works great, for the most part. However, multiple times a day, I'll be browsing and all of a sudden I find that my wifi is disconnected. All I have to do to get back online is connect to my network again in Gnome NetworkManager. It's easy but annoying. I'm pretty sure this isn't a Firefox problem because I tried to ping google in the terminal and couldn't but then it worked after I connected to WiFi again so I'm sure it's a WiFi issue. I'm wondering if it might have something to do with the linux kernel I'm running (4.16.5-1)? Perhaps I need to install a driver? I've tried to do some googling and didn't come up with much. Any thoughts / suggestions / advice? BTW, I'm forced to use wifi so a wired connection directly to my router isn't an option unfortunately. [link] [comments] |

GPU Usuage(I suppose I need nvidia-smi for this one)
How can I make used disk space and free disk space show on the same line? Like this used-space/free-space. The commands for disk usuage seem to be these: fs_size - File system size fs_used - File system used space How can I monitor my ryzen cpu temperatures? How can I make it show the weather for the day and tomorrow? Do note that I want to use it in CLI Mode. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2018 09:48 AM PDT Does MATE receive software/security updates at the same rate as Ubuntu? Does MATE have any hardware compatibility differences from regular Ubuntu? Is MATE really just a GUI change, or is there something else going on under the hood? Are all the repositories the same? tl;dr From a performance/security view, what am I giving up by going with MATE instead of plain ol' Ubuntu? [link] [comments] |
Cannot connect to my Windows Share via smb Posted: 02 May 2018 09:32 AM PDT Hey there, I've recently switched from Windwos 10 to Ubuntu 18 on my old laptop. I have a Windows 10 "server" running which also holds all my data and it seems, that I have problems connecting to it via Ubuntu. I'm trying to connect via the file manager -> Other Locations -> Connect to server as described here: https://websiteforstudents.com/connecting-to-windows-networks-shares-from-ubuntu-desktop/ I get the popup which asks for username, password an domain but after I've entered everything and hit enter, it just hangs with a little progress bar that isn't precessing any further. Is there something else I have to do before I can connect to my windows share? It's a complete new and clean installation. Many thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |

Ubuntu server PHP hardening question Posted: 02 May 2018 02:31 AM PDT Hi, I'm running through an old guide here and am hitting an error on the PHP section: Harden PHP for security Edit the php.ini file : After this, I Esc, :wq to save and quit vi. Then I get an error: I've tried but it says it can't open the file or directory as it doesn't exist. Someone suggested a permissions error and to try :w! but that also fails with the initial error. I suspect I need to change permissions on the file, but I'm not that experienced yet. Any advice appreciated!! [link] [comments] |
Any currently available ath9k cards on the market? Posted: 02 May 2018 04:41 AM PDT Purchased one that was an ath9k but is a rev2 with a realtek chipset that's nonfree. where to find: feature docs for ClipIt? Posted: 02 May 2018 06:57 AM PDT looking for good documentation of clipboard manager ClipIt -- usage examples, feature descriptions, etc -- and there appears to be precious little. "actions" seem especially powerful but can they only access the item at the top of the list ("%s")? in particular i've discovered that you can use the num pad keys to select the 1st, 2nd, etc items in the clip list and it would be amazing if actions could access those as well. for instance one could build up a compound string which would be a lovely thing. is it possible? format? where does one find out? Man, I really, REALLY miss Minirok. Need step-by-step on rebuilding .deb with altered dependencies Posted: 02 May 2018 12:48 AM PDT Fairly self-explanatory. Here's the deal: I LOVE the ease and simplicity (especially drag-and-drop, WHY DO MOST PLAYERS NOT SUPPORT THIS????) of Minirok, and I have tried out a few other music/mp3 players and they just don't cut it. Now, Minirok has been out of the update cycle for YEARS and therefore is counting on (DEPENDING ON, see what I did there?) older versions of packages that have since been updated. So I would like to unpack the .deb file, change the dependencies versions, re-pack/rebuild the .deb file, and hopefully it should install correctly from there. I tried following two small forum replies, but I must not have done something correctly. Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon, x86 Gstreamer completely up-to-date. I can use Timeshift just in case I bork the system. [link] [comments] |
