Does a 15" surface book 2 competitor exist? Posted: 02 May 2018 09:45 AM PDT I'm finding it absolutely impossible to find a sleek metal chassis Ultrabook with a 1060 max q and glossy screen anywhere. Does anyone know if there will be any brand coming out soon if ever? Manufacturers are scared of putting max q in anything I feel. Not really impressed with Xiaomi gaming and the new xps 15's 1050ti is a bit dated speed wise. 1060 max q would be the sweet spot to tinker in xtu and mess with thermal pads to get a awesome little gaming book. Any reasons to buy Aero 15x(8750H), not gs65? Posted: 02 May 2018 01:11 PM PDT MSI GS65 has 1. Not shitty keyboard 2. Lighter weight 3. Lighter and smaller power brick 4. Better thermal when CPU+GPU load 5. More quiet 6. Better speaker But I see that many of you buy Aero 15x v8. What's the reason to buy aero? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2018 09:17 AM PDT Hi there :) I've been looking for a laptop for a long time and I can't decide what's should I buy. I'm looking for a laptop that is quite portable (up to 2 kg), which will be sufficient for a little of 3D CAD modelling (Inventor, Solidworks, very basic models) and programming (Matlab, Arduino, CodeBlocks). I don't want to spend more than €1000, I'm from Poland, so I would be buying either from Polish online stores (rather not, everything is overpriced AF) or at Amazon, because it will likely ship to Poland. I was looking into Ideapad 320s-14 with i5-8250u and MX150, but I'm concerned about build quality. Acer Swift 3 (same config) is also nice, but it's over €1000 round there. Also, I have a gaming desktop at the dorm, which is my main workhorse, so I want to use this laptop while I'm out at university or when I come home, where I have no other PC. I'm not looking into high-end laptops, I want it to be more like extension to the desktop. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Gigabyte Aero 15x v8 long review based on your questions (VFX/Gaming focus) Posted: 01 May 2018 10:22 PM PDT Edit 1: added links so some photos. First of all, thank you so much to everyone who posted questions in my previous thread. I have answered what I could, though my hardware is limited so I couldn't answer everything. Disclaimer: This review is incentivized by Gigabyte offering $20 of Steam credit upon writing an "online review". It does not govern the content in any way, so any positive and negative thoughts are completely my own. ContextI purchased the Gigabyte Aero 15x primarily as a mobile visual effects workstation to supplement my decently beefy desktop setup (GTX 980, i7 5820k) and replace my fully upgraded late 2013 Macbook Pro. My push to get this was that my Macbook Pro simply does not have the power to drive production-ready asset creation in my software, including Maya, ZBrush Substance Painter, and Nuke. It was nonetheless a stressful decision as I have never had a Windows laptop before. I have been completely spoiled with the fantastic build quality of Macbooks. As needed for my workflows, and to help with the transition I had been running my Macbook completely in Bootcamp for about two months before the new purchase. Unfortunately my work has run me against the deep rooted issue of Apple's limiting computing power, t'was time to take the plunge! BuildI care deeply about the aesthetics of the things I use in my life, and I'm thrilled to say that this laptop really impressed me. The laptop is a mixture of plastic and metal paneling, designed in a mostly seamless way. I have yet to once have my attention negatively drawn to a particularly cheap-y plastic bit that feels subpar. It feels very solid. Having spent a few too many hours in the past months in Microsoft stores handling their display laptops, and try the occasional friend's laptop, I can confidently say this is top tier build. I have literally one issue that's quite small with the design. To accommodate the light up logo on the back of the display, the interior black shapes of the 'A' and 'B' are not the same roughed finish as the rest of the shell, but share the glossy reflection of the rest of the logo cut out. Again this is very small, and even better, it becomes a non issue when the laptop wakes and the logo illuminates. Most importantly, I do not feel bad leaving my beautifully machined unibody Macbook Pro in favor of this. While they are completely different designs, the Aero sets its own design goals and executes them with strong competency. DisplayOpening up the laptop for the first time was truly wonderful. The hinge was satisfying, lifted with one finger while keeping the base level. When open the screen can be wobbled if you play with it, but it didn't notable wobble upon removing my hand. Having the laptop on my desk, and typing away vigorously showed no discernible wobble. Having such thin bezels is truly beautiful! So I then hit the (satisfying) power button. I'm instantly shown the Gigabyte logo on a sea of black at full brightness, and it aint lookin pretty. I gots the backlight bleeds. Compared to posts online, it seems my case is a moderate level, not great, but not as terrible as I have seen elsewhere. Getting into Windows, it becomes clear that it's not atrocious. having any color other than black significantly reduces the effect. Nonetheless, I was not happy. I am glad I didn't stop there though, as the panel proved to have great color reproduction that complements my calibrated desktop very well. In terms of brightness, it's pretty good, though don't expect it to achieve eye-ache levels of brightness that modern media laptops seem to be obsessed with. For the purposes of seeing images accurately, even in well lit environments, I am very satisfied. InputsSomeone at Gigabyte got a little obsessed with machining tolerances. These ports are TIGHT. From what I have observed, this seems to exist across all units, it is a design decision and not a quality control issue. Every time I plug in a USB cable, I prepare to wrestle with the computer as I pin it down with one hand, and in a roar of adrenaline fury, ram the cable into it's resting place. "Fatality". It does require more strength than any other laptop, but once I quickly trusted the strength of the ports, the fear was replaced with a satisfying certainty knowing that that flash drive or cord isn't going to be moving. The USB C does NOT support charging, as its maximum of 100v would be far to little for what this has. If the Surface Book with a low power CPU and GTX 1060 cant even charge properly, then this would be horrific. I do not own any USB C dock, but I did very quickly try a friend's Apple dock splitting it to USB A, HDMI, and C. All I can confirm is that the USB A works. I also know that running HDMI out of the built in HDMI port uses the full GPU when necessary. Status LightsWhy do these exist? While they thankfully aren't glaring in your face in normal use, these shine very bright and will be noticeable in darker rooms. These appears to be more just me being used to Macs though, as I do see them present in so many Windows laptops. The worst part however, is how even when closed and asleep, the power status LED still makes damn sure you know its still alive. With the laptop being in my bedroom, I have to turn it away from me to soundly sleep to stop being stirred by the bright pulsation. KeyboardIt's really good! I was really surprised when I first typed on this. I'm not only accustomed to the debatable great Macbook pro keyboard, but also blue and brown mechanical switches. I like my keyboards. I was really surprised to find that this is really close, and some ways better than the Macbook!. The layout took some getting used to, but I really enjoy the tactility of these switches. On top of that, there is no garish font and completely customizable lighting. You can set different colors for every single key, but I spend 99% of the time with no backlight at all, with the occasional pop of the dimmest white backlight. It serves those needs greatly! Here's the kicker though... my 'O' key requires a bit more pressure to be reliably recognized. If I have any missing 'o's in this write up, you have this laptop to blame on top of my poor editing! When I first started, I did have keyboard chatter, however I was able to fix the issue after a quick Google search. There has also since been a keyboard firmware update which may have also fixed the issue. TrackpadThe bane of Windows laptops. My expectations were on the floor after reading all the disheartening reviews. It turn out, it really isn't bad! The build of it is not only OK, but great! The surface is a fantastically smooth surface, that feels on par with my Apple past. The physical click is satisfying yet small, so no overly loud THUNKS. Where it gets a bit worse is how its interpreted by Windows. It still isn't bad, but it is genuinely tedious to try to move with pixel accuracy. Broad strokes are great though. I am currently using Windows Precision drivers, which were a breeze to install, which improved the 'meh' pointer precision to be a little better while having more native-feeling scroll. PerformanceThis thing screams through almost every task its given... except for navigating Windows. While scoring on average equal to my GTX 980 / i7 5820k in 3d Mark and performing roughly the same in games (plus or minus depending a small amount on the game), For some reason I regularly am waiting for up to second long stutters or oddly long load times. Even Crystal Bench shows that the integrated NVMe SSD is quite fast, almost twice as fast as my SSD in my desktop, apps like Firefox and Steam take twice as long to load. What the hell? This all seems separate from the small Optimus related issues. Using the Optimus checker tool, I check to see if the 1070 was flashing on and off, causing the stutter, however I would catch these big stutters when there was no change to GPU. To be perfectly clear: game and application performance is amazing. I really can make use of the high refresh rate panel in decently demanding 3D games, or while composing a scene in Maya. Most importantly to me, Substance Painter holds strong and quite fast viewing full 4k textures. At that full resolution, as on my desktop, applying smart materials or other demanding tasks still will take a few moments. While I don't work in GPU rendering workflows to render final images, I have found the GPU/CPU IRay renderer in Substance to be tremendous to use with so much GPU power. I am certain that this laptop could perform admirably in Octane or Redshift productions, at least to check renders before sending them of, as of course it would not be as amazing as a 1080ti based render station. Also note that the latest Nvidia drivers (manually downloaded) are the first to be supported by this since the included 2017 drivers. It seems like that issue has been fixed! BatteryHoly crap its good! It's really a beautiful sight moussing over the power icon to have it read over 9 hours. It's not an accurate reading, but when I'm used to a very max of 4 from the boot camped Macbook, its a gleeful sight. Most notably, I have been able to sit though full two and a half hour classes working on Substance painter or Maya doing moderate workloads on both CPU and GPU while syncing the data to my cloud and it still escapes with plenty of power. Heat and fansThis slim beast has a lot of wattage to tame, and it does the job. At complete default settings running 3D mark benchmarks, the CPU rose to 90 degrees, with the GPU being cooler at about 80. This was with the fans running pretty dang loud, though still not at 100%. I then realized how easy it was to under volt the CPU and after applying a -.140v decrease, and a play of the fan profile, I've become comfortable with the noise. In my setup, I have no throttling, and the fans stay quite quiet until a demanding game kicks in, then the fans get of a moderate loudness. It is still louder than I would like, where I have become self conscious after starting the orchestra of fans rendering an image in a quiet room with people around me on quiet desktop workstations. What does frustrate me is how the fans can not be set to ever turn off, even if ice cold. The only way is to enable the "quiet mode" which turns of the fans completely, and severely restricts system performance. Why can't the fan profile allow my to set the fans to be still when below 40 degrees? That being said, I am very happy that no matter what, that laptop surface never gets uncomfortable. Even doing fully demanding workloads, my fingers were always OK, with just a sense of warmth. When rested on my knees, it does get a little uncomfortable, though it is not to bad. In general the surface temperatures are way better than my Macbook, I don't expect burn my pant knee with this anytime soon. Windows April updateWhat the hell happened? Since installing the update through the auto updater, the laptop now will sometimes blue screen upon opening from wake. In addition there have been an increase in hang ups. It would be worth reinstalling Windows over if it wasn't for... I am getting a free replacementAfter voicing my concerns to Gigabyte's support, they deemed all of my issues as "within spec", except for the faulty 'o' key. It is because of just that they simply told me to make use of Amazon's 30 day return policy and get a new one free. OK! I will be really curious to see how many of my gripes will remain with the replacement, but I'm most exited for a second spin at the backlight bleed lottery. Do I like it?I do! It's really incredible having so much power crammed into a device so small and pretty. The touches of the satisfying keyboard and bezel-less 144 hz display really make it special. If I had to live with my current unit, I would be a bit disappointed, especially having to deal with the finicky 'o' key, but the good far outweighs the bad. If the replacement has all the same issues and more, than I might have to reconsider. From my research on the MSI GS65 competitor, it looks like that is the only viable alternatives when it comes to the combo of power, portability, and battery longevity. While it's easy to point out the lack of crap about the MSI, also not that it doesn't appear to be out yet to consumers, though correct me if I'm wrong. The reviews I have viewed show it to be similar in many ways, with the visual aesthetic up to taste. I do see it marked down decently consistently for lacking build quality, and it's for that reason that I am far more in favor of this laptop. Despite its flaws, the Aero 15x v8 is a laptop ready to stay with me for years to help me make cool crap and keep myself balanced. A great tool. Thank you for reading! I tried to make this as repeatable to understand for those who of us who don't really care as much about numbers. If you have any specific questions, let me know and I will answer what I can! Replace DVD Drive with USB 3.0 ports? Posted: 02 May 2018 08:14 AM PDT So my laptop (Packard Bell TK87-JU-131) doesn't have any USB 3.0 ports so I'd like to have that instead of the DVD drive which I rarely use. I saw something like this https://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=13471 and it looks like it's exactly what I need, but it's for a Dell laptop. Where could I find something like this for my laptop and how does one call this specific product (so I could also search for it myself)? [link] [comments]
how to tell if the laptop heatsink is bad? Posted: 02 May 2018 01:49 PM PDT so i have this laptop called clevo w230ss, it has an i7 470MQ and a gtx 860m i look upon reviews on the internet and the temp are cool between 60 and 70 but on my laptop when i run a game, the temps rise on +90 on both cpu and gpu, i tried replacing thermale paste but it didn't help with the temps which make me doubt it has to do with the cooler or the Heatsink [link] [comments]

Is this laptop good price for the specs? Posted: 02 May 2018 01:39 PM PDT [buying help] Looking for a laptop for grad school and I like this one. What do y'all think about the price vs the specs? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Put RAM from old laptop to new one (additionally) Posted: 02 May 2018 01:37 PM PDT I don't know much about laptops and their hardware, I need some advise. I bought a new laptop with 8 gb ram and there are 2 "slots" for ram (don't know how they are called), so one "slot" is empty. Is it possible to put the ram of my old laptop (4gb) into the new one? So I would have 12 gb of ram, right? Would it work? Does it make sense? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2018 12:57 PM PDT Hi! I have an Asus F550JX, I7 4720HQ. My problem is that the processor frequency goes to max when scrolling with touchpad, and that's bothering me. Can I somehow turn off turbo boost for the touchpad or turn it off at all? Laptop runs great but sometimes I think it runs a little hot. Is it ok to run at 55-60 degrees Celsius when watching youtube videos and having 2-3 tabs in Mozzila open? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2018 07:56 AM PDT Hi guys, until this point in life, I've used laptops for casual use like internet, some office work and a bit of gaming. I have recently engaged myself in electronic music production and I'm planning to buy a solid high spec laptop. With my current budget, I can afford either: MacBook Pro 13' (2017), core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD or Dell 7373, core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD. I've heard some people say that the Macbook will still perform better than i7 Windows laptop for heavy tasks. Note- I do not have great knowledge of processor or RAM technology so to me a higher configuration means better performance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2018 10:24 AM PDT I'm thinking of upgrading my laptop which currently has a 1TB HDD (about 300gb free space left). This is my first time buying an SSD so I have a couple of questions. Some background info: I use my laptop mostly for uni work (some coding and light photoshop editing- but planning to do more in the future), and playing some Overwatch (not sure if it's considered "light" gaming or w/e). The main reason I'm looking for an SSD is for better booting times and faster in-game loading. First of all, I was thinking about keeping my HDD(in the laptop) for storing files which aren't used on a frequent base, such as photos/music, and using at the same time the SSD for windows and programs. Mainly to avoid reducing the SSD's lifetime/performance by filling it up with those image files etc. Does that make sense/can it actually work? Or should I just install the SSD in place of the HDD, and use the other one as an external hard disk? In the case of keeping both of them running on my laptop, what hardware info should I know in order to buy the correct SSD that fits? I plan to remove the optical disc drive as I never use it and place the SSD there (with the needed caddy) Also, I've read that if I keep both of them, the SSD must have a bigger capacity than my current drive- is that true? Because I haven't found many sources implying that, and buying a 1TB+ ssd is not gonna be cheap. Since I brought up the price, how much capacity should I look for, based on the usage of my laptop? I was thinking about 500gb, as I have a current budget of ~150€. Or could a 256GB be enough? Lastly, are there any brands that I should avoid? For example, I came across "TeamGroup" while searching and they seem too cheap compared to others (e.g. TeamGroup L5 Lite 240GB costs around 60€ here). I should probably avoid budget ssds, right? Sorry for the huge text. Any tips are more than welcome! [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2018 10:20 AM PDT Looking at repasting my CPU will LM. However, I carry the laptop around alot for work (in a backpack where it will be bouncing around). What are the chances of the LM flicking off / sliding off the CPU when in a vertical position? I may opt for Thermal Grizzly Kryo if the risk is too great. [link] [comments]

where/how to replace laptop screen Posted: 02 May 2018 08:41 AM PDT Not quite sure if this is the right sub for this, but I need help. Long story short, I stepped on my computer and messed up the screen. Because I was broke and naive and didn't want to wait until I had enough money to afford a warranty, I didn't get one. It's still functional, but the whole reason I bought this was to play games. I know I can change the res to fit to my screen or whatever, but it's just inconvenient. I have a Dell Inspiration 15 7000 gaming. My resolution is 1536 x 864. I don't really know the first step in fixing this so any help is appreciated! If you need more information I can provide it. Posted: 01 May 2018 04:37 PM PDT Hi all, Yesterday I received my Aero 15x V8 from GentechPC. I had them re-paste with grizzly conductonaut, upgrade ram to 32gb and upgrade wifi card to intel 9265. Out of the box I was having issues all regarding performance.
I have reset the PC twice (which I believe re-installs windows) now and still having the first problem which makes the laptop kinda useless especially at 3k (canadian dollary dooes.) Has anyone else faced this and what did you do to fix it. The only hesitation I have in returning it is 1) I have to pay international shipping back to USA 2) I have to eat the cost of taxes and duties I paid upon arrival 3) GentechPC charges a 15% restocking fee. Thats about $600 side costs for a laptop that does not work... UPDATE:Called them today. I explained that I've done extensive trouble shooting for 20 hrs. Asked me to do one more thing which is to open back and try removing ram cards one at a time to see if it would have an effect. I agreed and will do this. Was told they'd replace with new one and they'd cover all shipping costs (return and shipping for new laptop). Was also told they'd test replacement for issues so I don't have to go through this again. Thanks everyone for suggestions. Will keep updated. [link] [comments]

I bought the Lenovo Legion Y720 and regret it. Posted: 01 May 2018 11:58 PM PDT Hey guys! I bought this laptop 4 month ago don't get me wrong the i7 7700HQ with GTX 1060 are great! I just realized that the 8th Generation intel CPUs are being sold, people are amazed by how faster the new gen is, it has 6 Cores! But I heard some that its speed is not stable. Confused who should I listen to so I came to get ur opinions guys... Is it bad that now I don't have newest gen and new games will not be as good on 7700HQ ? Will it have a good life in it ? Should I sell this laptop and get new one ? Is 8th gen an overkill ? I hope I get ur honest answers. Cheers! [link] [comments]
Question about the Acer Swift 3 Posted: 02 May 2018 02:42 AM PDT Hey, I'm a university student from Germany and I'm thinking about buying the Swift 3. Only Problem i have is that the only budget model here in Germany for 600€ comes with: i3 7100U 4GB DDR4 Ram 128 GB SSD Now my question: I am concerned about the i3 processor, if that gives me enough power to work with. I want a laptop that boots up fast and can handle my work at University. I don't do anything cpu intensive, use for the laptop will be Word, PP, streaming music/videos and that is it. I know that the i3 can handle that. But will it be able to do all of that fast, boot up in 20secs and give me a fast working experience without any problems? Thanks in advance, i can't afford the i5 model since it punches up the price by 200€ here in germany :( [link] [comments]
Alienware 17 Opinions and suggestions Posted: 01 May 2018 09:49 PM PDT Hey all so after about 2 weeks of looking for a good gaming laptop for under $2000 grand the Alienware 17 is looking pretty good to me. The specs on the one im thinking of are - 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ - NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 with 8GB GDDR5 - 17.3 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare 300-nits - 16GB DDR4 at 2400MHz (2x8GB) - 256GB PCIe SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage) What do you guys think? that puts me at about $1750 on the main Dell website. i'm looking for a machine that I can play pretty much all games on at high settings now and for the next few years. I did have a few questions.
Much Thanks [link] [comments]
Is It A Bad Time To Buy A Laptop When New GTX Cards Are Just Around The Corner? Posted: 01 May 2018 10:26 PM PDT Coffee Lake and Kaby Lake R CPUs are out. However, is this really big news? (Especially when GTX 11 series cards will be out soon, and are the bigger performance determinant). I am trying to decide if it's best to wait a few months - I am a photographer and a tech enthusiast as well. Honestly, I don't need a top of the line GPU since I don't game, but I feel like paying premium for one now isn't so sensible. What do you guys think? [link] [comments]
is the microsoft surface laptop that bad? Posted: 01 May 2018 10:24 PM PDT Hi. I've read a lot of criticism about MS surface laptop. * It's lock with windows 10s but now it's possible to switch to regular windows 10 with no charge. * It's all glue inside. But I don't need to open it. And the build quality seems good enough to last a few years even carrying it in a bag everyday. * It was expensive but now the basic model is only 800€. * For basic needs I have it seems OK to me. (mainly excel and word, watching videos, listening podcasts, browsing the web and light python programming) Does it now worth the price? [link] [comments]
Deciding between two laptops - need help Posted: 01 May 2018 04:23 PM PDT Hey guys, I'm currently looking to purchase a new laptop. Basically I'm between the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming and the ASUS ROG Strix GL503VM. Bestbuy currently has the ASUS on sale for $1100 versus $750 for the Dell ($350 difference) ASUS specs: i7-7700HQ 16gb ram NVIDIA GeForce 1060 1 TB HDD + 128 SSD Dell specs: i5-7300HQ 8gb ram NVIDIA GeForce 1050-Ti 4gb 256 SSD Basically it comes down to this: is the increased performance for the ASUS worth it? My current laptop is trash so these would both be massive upgrades. The games I play aren't too intense - mostly WOW, some LoL, and occasionally Overwatch/other FPS titles. Is the $350 difference worth it? I don't need to play on Ultra graphics settings. Note: I travel a lot for work so I'm only interested in laptops. [link] [comments] |
