    Portable gaming laptop, Canada/USA, $1500, 13-15 inches

    Posted: 03 May 2018 02:04 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget is roughly $1600 could go a little over. I'm in Canada, but can easily get something shipped to America if it ends up cheaper

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A good battery is quite important to me, but specs moreso. At a minimum I'd like a gtx 1060, not too fussed about the 8th gen Intel if getting something last gen nets me a great deal.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, I've used a mac book pro and really love the build quality, so if I could get something like that it'd be amazing.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13-15 inches, would prefer smaller if possible, but am happy to go 15 if it's infinity bezel

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Whole lot of gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 3d RPG games like fallout 4 or witcher 3 or whatever is current (haven't kept up) I want 60 fps minimum, but am happy to go to medium settings to accomplish that.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would love a high quality build, something with a somewhat minimalist design aesthetic, I hate those super gamey laptops that are big and chunky. Touch screen isn't important to me, but might be nice. Touch pad and keyboard would be important to me.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Essentially I'm looking for something that looks as much like mac book pro as possible, except isn't terrible at playing games.

    Thanks!

Desktop replacement for game Development and recreational gaming (<1300) can be bulky and ugly

    Posted: 03 May 2018 03:19 AM PDT

form in comments but this is the basics:

Looking for good specs/longevity as affordable as possible: a reliable build that won't break down and can run most things. My only other hope is that it doesn't have cooling issues like my msi ge60 because that was a nightmare. Thanks internet friends

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 inches would be good but 15.6 is fine

Windows laptop primarily for academic work, $400-1000

    Posted: 02 May 2018 10:38 PM PDT

Hi all, hoping you can help me. I'm an academic who needs a computer which I can take with me on the go for writing during talks, on airplanes and just around the house on my lap.

I currently use a Surface Pro 3 as my primary computer (docked 90% of the time) and so have a pseudo-desktop. I need a proper laptop which I can set in my lap and work though (which the SP3 can't do).

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

In the US. I'm looking at spending somewhere between $400 and $1000, depending on whether I decide to go with a nicer, longer term computer which would replace my current (docked Surface Pro 3) primary, or whether this is just my secondary, mobile computer.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I have a Surface Pro 3 so don't need another 2-in-1. The best mix of battery life and specifications would be great.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Pretty important; needs to be mobile. I'm a big fan of e.g. the Macbook builds, but not of the price or OS.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Only Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Around 13".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Maybe light gaming. No editing; just internet, PDFs and word processor (LaTeX).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

At most stuff like Civ 5 at reduced settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard is required; need to be able to write for extended periods of time. Also looking for good, sleek build quality if possible. Ideally I'd be able to output to dual monitors with little issue.

    Many thanks!

Should I own a secondary laptop?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 02:09 AM PDT

I own a surface pro which I use for sketching, average internet usage, and school, where damage will be most be applied to the device. Would bringing something cheaper like a chrome book specifically for school be good or will it just be an unessecary addition?

Thoughts on this Asus ROG Strix Scar laptop setup for the types of work I do?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 02:09 AM PDT

The laptop will be used for graphic design (file can get pretty big sometimes, the one I am currently working on is 72mbs), video editing (will be used mostly for stop motion 24fps frame by frame animation, and possibly some 4k nature footage eventually), music production on fl studios, and basic browsing and downloading.

Asus ROG Strix Scar GL503GE-RS71 - GTX 1050 Ti 8th Gen Coffee Lake H Gaming LaptopPrice: $1,683.99 (This choice is at the peak of my spending limit, like within 10 dollars haha.)

    The Fancy Specs - 15.6" Full HD Matte 120Hz Display (1920 x 1080)

    • Intel Core i7-8750H 6 Core Processor

    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB GDDR5

    • 32GB (2 x 16GB) 2666MHz DDR4 RAM

    • 1TB M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD

    • 1TB 7200rpm Hard Disk Drive

    • 4-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery (64WHr)

(more details and customization options within the laptop link above)

Basically, I'm looking for some advice on what I may be overlooking, specs and performance wise, for what I plan on using the laptop for. Am I over-killing it? Under-killing? Right on the money?

    Laptop for work/relaxation USA, $2000, 13-15 inches

    Posted: 03 May 2018 01:28 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget is $2000 could go a little over but not by much. I'm in America

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't need or want a 2 in 1. A good batter is a must.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would like it to be light enough for me to carry it to and from work without that much of an issue. I tend to walk and it's about 15-20 minutes one way

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13-15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nope

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Any gaming I plan to do would be fine on an integrated graphics card

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As said earlier don't really need a touch screen and a optical drive isn't really needed either. Would like a good touchpad since I use that pretty much all the time. Would also like a good keyboard since I will be writing a lot due to my job. Prefer a SSD as well.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will be using this device mainly for my job, just need it to run office, excel and graphpad. Other then that I will use it mostly for web surfing, watch/streaming and streaming videos. I would like for it to last me 5 years or more. The laptop I currently have is a gigabyte p34. For the most part I liked it, the only faults are the touchpad is wonky and the build felt flimsy, screws have started to come undone, and sadly disappeared, after about 2-3 years of use.

Looking for top reliable and less amount of issues laptop.

    Posted: 03 May 2018 01:12 AM PDT

I am a frequent flyer that needs a light and reliable laptop. My use case is mostly streaming, web browsing and office with no cost limit and Windows 10 based (not an apple fan). I have been looking something like the Lenovo Thinkpad carbon x1 and XPS 13 9370. Both looks really good with the new 8 gen Intel process. My only concern is quality and customer service, as I have read nightmares stories from both brands.

As mentioned I travel a lot an I would really appreciate a really good customer support.

I really like the look and feel and the military gimmick of the carbon, but not sure if this translate to reality.

XPS looks awesome, but it doesn't looks as durable as the carbon.

    Any thoughts?

    • Total budget and country of purchase: -US... No limit-

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13.3 to 15

      • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Chrome, office, Netflix. Light gaming not priority but could be welcome.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not required but we'll received if possible

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, touch screen and finger reader required.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I just want a reliable modern laptop with good and modern specs that can last for a long time with the least amount of issues.

EVGA SC17 vs. Aero 15W vs. Razer Blade 14''

    Posted: 03 May 2018 01:07 AM PDT

    Here are the specs:

    EVGA SC17 17.3'' GTX 1070, 32GB RAM, 1.25TB SSD, < 2 hours battery life, 4K Screen with G Sync and 120Hz, 9 lbs, and a larger-than-average charging brick as well

    Razer Blade 14'' GTX 1060, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 6 hours battery life, 1080p screen, ~5 lbs

Aero 15 15'' GTX 1060, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 7 hours battery life, 1080p screen no bezels like the XPS, ~5lbs

(These specs may not be perfectly accurate, just what I got from a few reviews)

Surprisingly, through deals with friends selling their old laptops and craigslist ads, I managed to find each of these laptops all at the same price of $1300 each (used/refurbished). I'm going to college next year and want to get a machine for video editing (especially visual effects rendering), gaming, and productivity.

I really, really want to get that EVGA laptop for the amazing specs and 4K display (and its still really thin), and at that low of a price it feels like a shame not to get it. But will that 2 hour battery get me? I feel like at most of the places I go there will be a charging outlet in class or at libraries and Starbucks, but I might be overestimating that. Is the weight, size, and low battery life a poor option? I also have a good Macbook Pro that I could use with a good 6 hour battery life when going to places that might not have outlets, but that might be defeating the purpose of getting those specs on the go.

If it's still worth the mobility sacrifice for the amazing specs, I'll definitely take it. But if not, which is better, the Razer Blade 14'' or the Aero 15''? Trackpad and keyboard are also pretty important to me, and I heard that the Razer has better ones.

    Upgrading from a Dell XPS 13 L321X. How's the MX150 for gaming?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 08:16 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $3000 CAD Max

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I prefer a non-touch ultrabook unless it has a really good latency but if it's not possible then it's okay. It's not that important

    16GB RAM is very important

4+ cores is also very important

    Solid build quality

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I like how thin my current Dell XPS 13 L321X is but I'm willing to go a little thicker like the thickness of a 2015 15" MacBook Pro. And no more than 5lbs! The thinner the better and the lighter the better.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows or Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14"-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll be running Visual Studio, CAD, and light use of tensorflow, and probably 1 or 2 VMs

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The games I plan to play are: League of Legends, CS:GO, Hearthstone, and any Total War Game on low settings that the laptop can handle. (A bonus: Battlefield 4 on low to medium settings 50+ FPS.)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

My Dell XPS 13 L321x has a pretty solid build quality. It doesn't bend or anything and I like that so I'd prefer to keep it that way. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT: I like thin bezels or the bezels the same size as my DELL XPS 13 L321X that are made from glass like Dell XPS and MacBooks. I don't like the plastic/matte/whatever type of bezels.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm using this laptop primarily for data science, software/web development and try to do a little bit of machine learning on the go. Obviously heavier gaming/applications will be on my desktop.

I've been thinking about the 15" Lenovo Ideapad 720s and maybe the new 2018 Dell XPS 15 9570. So if anyone has experiences with the Ideapad 720s 15", please let me know, I haven't seen too many reviews on it online.

I'm not interested in the Surface Book at all or the Gigabyte Aero15

    Study/Gaming $800-1200

    Posted: 02 May 2018 11:14 PM PDT

I'm going to go study far from home and need a new laptop.

I plan on entering into the CS field, but from what I heard performance isn't too important for CS.

Looking for Windows 10 and a decent amount of RAM for a lot of tabs. I plan on playing League of Legends, Fortnite, and Overwatch (nothing more really). I don't expect amazing settings but a comfortable medium or low high would be ideal.

    Thanks!

    Canadian Mec E, ~$2k CAD 13"-15" 2-in-1

    Posted: 02 May 2018 09:40 PM PDT

I'm a 2nd year mechanical engineering student looking for a laptop for this summer. I previously had an Asus GL552-vw, but I bought it refurbished, and the motherboard died (for the second time, I learned posthumously) after one year. I will have my desktop with me in the city this year, so this time I want to go with something more portable and pleasant to use. When I bought the Asus, it had been with the intention of having it replace my desktop at school, so I wanted a dGPU. This time, I really don't care about the gpu, and would go as far as to say that I need to keep a limit on the gpu's power, for the sake of my poor time management abilities. A few of my older engineer frat mates had Surfaces (I think 3's) that they swore by, so this time I'm looking for something that I can write notes on. (Not type, I'm otherwise loyal to pencil and paper) The form hurt my brain, and I'm sure you know what it looks like anyway, so I'm shortening it. Sue me.

    • Budget, Country? Prairie Canada. Kinda flexible, $1500 to low $2k's, but whatever makes sense. (Currently $1166.76 USD - $1555.68 USD and making me sad)

    • Preferences? Mostly just something that's enjoyable to use? I think with my budget I should be able to get some decent specs, but I think my specs/build quality ratio is a bit lower this time around.

    • FF? Leaning towards thin and light. Used to carrying around my old iPad 3, which is 1.46lbs, probably 2lbs with case. Doubt any 2-in-2's are tablet light.

    • OS? Windows 10

    • Screen Size? 13"-15"? idk, OneNote size?

    • GPU Applications? I'll go home and use my desktop.

    • Gaming Performance? Negative fps. Need less of that great stuff in my life. Maybe be able to turn on hardware acceleration in Discord.

    • Preferences II: Specific Preferences A high resolution display, been drooling over UHD stuffs for a while.

A nicely performing stylus. I've never used an active pen before, but too much latency seems like it would suck.

I've never really had anything with bad I/O, so maybe don't throw me in too deep there. I could do without USB-A if I had to, but I'll have to factor in some money for new stuffs. Thunderbolt 3 would be pre cool.

Bit of a storage snob. No spinning; NVMe please. Bonus points if I can save money/get a free drive by getting a low storage version and replacing the SSD. If it doesn't require more than screw drivers and pry tools, I can probably get by. I'm not really sure how much storage I want, as I've never tried a desktop+portable set up. Will never run out of archive storage capacity on the desktop.

Keyboard layout could go either way. I think a numpad would be nice on a 15", but probably not worth it on a 13"? Don't really have a lot to compare keyboard feel to.

Touchpads suck, G900 is good. Touchpads seem kinda redundant when you have a touchscreen.

If I haven't been sitting near an outlet in more than 3 hours, something's wrong and I have bigger problems than laptop battery.

    • Closing Thoughts Seems like there are a lot of canadian geers here today. I'll try and watch theirs too. I'll post what I've been looking at in comments I think.

Best refurbished laptop I can get for $200 - $300? Best place to look?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 09:07 PM PDT

I'm not needing anything special. Just something portable and maybe with the potential to upgrade. An i5 would be nice.

I'm having a difficult time figuring out the safest way to buy. I know newegg and Ebay are always options but Newegg is a bit pricy and things in my range seem on the heavier side. I bought my T430 from Ebay but I've also read that I should be more wary. I dunno.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    NA

    No

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Feel free to ask questions to help with suggestions. Thanks!

We were hoping to keep the price in the 300-400 range at max! But I'm curious as to how long a laptop would be of use in that price range? I'm really interested in Chromebooks and wonder if one could fit all of those requirements above? The basic MacBook Air is lingering as another option as Best Buy has it on sale for $800 but it there is a viable option under $400 it would be hard to pass up!

Thank you for reading and any comments and help!

Hello! I've been planning to buy an Acer laptop, its exact model is E5-476G-38MH.

I'm a light gamer, but I am very interested in games like Overwatch, LoL, and ME Andromeda. Can a laptop with the following specs be able to run these games smoothly?

A gaming laptop that's actually stylish? Australia, open budget.

    Posted: 02 May 2018 07:58 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: About $5000, Australia.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want the newest Intel hex-core CPU and a GTX 1080!

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I do travel a lot, but I'm willing to make some sacrifices.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, please.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'm happy with 15"-17".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm going to be working with databases by day and gaming by night.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'd love to be able to squeeze the most out of today's most taxing games, and have my hardware stay competent for as long as possible.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A DVD/Blu-ray player would be a killer bonus, if they still include them at all! Per-key RGB would be great as well, if possible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm really impartial to the typical brash and angry red-and-black "gamer" look. I've been looking for a new gaming laptop for ages but I can't seem to settle on any particular one. Right now, I'm waiting for the Alienware 17 R5 to release in Australia (hopefully tomorrow), but I've also given heavy consideration to the gorgeous Razer Blade - but was dissuaded by its slightly ageing components and poor quality control, not to mention being in Australia to boot.

I love the look of the Rose Gold Dell XPS, but I don't consider its guts to be powerful enough for what I want.

My current laptop is a mid-2009 Macbook Pro, so I'm very keen to make the leap into the future.

    Thank you for your time!
