    [Help][Question] Long-term Reliability of Windows

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:19 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit to post my question (and if it is not, I'll happily take my post down), but with Apple's recent keyboard issues and potential delay in updated MacBook Pros this year, I've been considering switching to Windows (I'm specifically thinking about the 2018 XPS 15).

For the last 4.5 years, i've been a very happy Mac user since getting my 2013 MacBook Air. I've been extremely happy with both the software and hardware support and I stand very confident that my MacBook would have continued software support for a couple more years (had my display not broken) to boot.

While I was a Windows user previously, I always felt that my PC would halt to a crawl a couple years into owning it, contrary to my baseline MacBook whose performance steadied strong all 4 years (though, I must admit that I've never owned a higher-spec'd PC before, having always opted with the $400-600 off-the-shelf laptop).

While I do have some strings attached to the Apple Ecosystem, as I still own and plan to use my iPad Pro 10.5" and iPhone for the foreseeable future, it seems that it isn't as hard to trade MacOS for Windows, as Dell's XPS Lineup has software support to allow texting from my iPhone (which was one of the core features tying me to MacOS).

With that, I wanted to ask the Windows Community what their 4/5+ year experience has been with high-end Windows Laptops. Should I expect the same longevity with a top-of-the-line Dell XPS laptop as I've experienced with my mid-tier Mac or am I better off sticking with Apple for my next purchase.

Thanks for all the help in advance!

If I put a stock image back on a hard drive before I sell my computer, how obliterated is my data?I

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:58 PM PDT

I put a new OS on a laptop, imaged it, then proceeded to put all my personal data on programs on it.

Before I sell it, if I put the image back on, is my data automaically erased and gone and near impossible to retrieve?

Aquasnap makes Windows remember window positions

    Posted: 31 May 2018 04:46 AM PDT

As wolfcry0 suggests (read comments), Displayfusion is another option (and my current favorit). The free version seems to work for the intended use. This is my original post:

All posts about Windows 10 not remembering window positions seems to be archived.. so forgive me for creating a new one.

I have tried most suggestions in those threads (the best one being Windowmanager . But the program is not free, and for me it only works sometimes, and the program is not so intuitive.

Today I downloaded Aquasnap (there is a free limited version) and it seems my window positions (at least for Windows Explorer and Foobar2000 - the last one drove me crazy) are saved, after snapping them. This feature is not highlighted on their website, so I was surprised it worked. I might work for you too.

Edit: Windows settings window is not saved.

Edit2: Windows Explorer, for me, is a bit unaligned.

Edit3: So, was away from the pc a few hours. Window positions forgotten. Grr. Still, they are remembered if you are not AFK for too long (don't know exactly how long).

Cannot download direct X end-used runtime... trying to run a game that runs on direct x 9 or 11 but it says the file is missing even though I have direct X 12 installed

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:05 PM PDT

I was downloading world of tanks and when it finished I ran the game, it said direct x was not found. I went to download direct x and attempted to download it off the windows site, I downloaded "dwwebsetup" of the site and ran it but it said "error creating process ..../dxwebsetup.exe Reason: INDOWS\system32\advpack.dll" I assume it means windows instead of indows but that is what it says. Is there any way to fix the error downloading? My computer says it has direct X installed but yet when I went to download world of tanks it said " No direct X found on your computer, would you like to download it" or something similar.

Repost in different subreddit: Sound issue: Distortion when recording

    Posted: 31 May 2018 08:44 PM PDT

Ever since a Windows Update, I have been suffering a small problem: Through both Streamlabs OBS and regular OBS, whenever I record audio, no matter *what* quality, it suffers distortion. (See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39RtU7xz2eM )

Updating and rolling back audio drivers: Failed. This Windows Update was well over a few days ago. Current date and time at time of post composition: 5/31. Latest (and only) System Restore point at this time: 5/30. Audacity does not suffer a distortion effect when recording the *same* audio.

Does anyone have any ideas? Not even editing the bitrate worked. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

What causes some files to not load correctly when extracted from an archive library?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:53 AM PDT

BACKSTORY: Earlier today I noticed my New 3DS XL wasn't loading any of the games in the cartridge slot, and I got very upset about it, until I turned it off and on with a game inside of it. It loaded, both the game and the icons, but when I removed the game on the home screen (the game is closed), the model/banner (whatever it is called) on the top screen went away, but the icon stayed. The same thing happens when I close the 3DS and reopen it. This happened to all of the cartridges, not just one. When I load a game in, no matter where the pointer is, it is supposed to automatically move to the game cartridge slot, even if it will not showing properly, which made me think that the home-screen is not loading the game properly, and it just needs to be refreshed. I thought about it, and I made the connection that sometimes this happens on Windows, too, especially when extracting something from an archive library like a .zip file. The unloaded files only then correctly load when the folder is refreshed.

My question is: why do some files not register when they are extracted from a library, needing a refresh? (luckily I can still play, but if anyone wants to help me with the 3DS issue, he or she can move it to a different subreddit).

Can't reactivate Windows 10 after motherboard upgrade

    Posted: 31 May 2018 11:15 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I recently upgraded my motherboard because of a bad RAM slot and the need for better processor. Everything works fine, but my copy of Windows 10 is not activated on this machine. I have a valid product key that I purchased when I built the PC several years back.

I've called costumer support twice, and both times they've walked me through a series of steps, ultimately telling me to contact the supplier of my key/manufacturer of the PC (which is no one since I built it myself).

Has anyone else run into this problem before? I've Googled solutions and most people seem to have found success using the Chat Support feature, where they provided proof of a new motherboard and were then given a new key. But I can't find Chat support anywhere - Currently the Get Help support gives me a number or the Windows forums if I need further help.

Any help would be appreciated, because I don't want to shell out an additional $100-200 for something I already own.

Does anyone know the actual link for UltraUXThemePatcher?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 10:49 AM PDT

I used different software to customize my Windows 10 box but want to give UltraUXThemePatcher a try. There are so many good looking themes out there that look promising. I know that this tool is pretty well know but I have no idea where the official domain is that hosts it. Does anyone know the "actual" link? I also wanted to know if I still have to install UxStyle and if so in what order?

[Help] Annoying white line appearing when maximizing windows

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:07 AM PDT

    Hello,

ever since the new Update (1803), whenever I maximize a window or move it from one screen to another, then dock it at the top, a white line appears on top of it, only disappearing if I move the window again and dock it again. If I right click on the line, even though it is on top of the screen, a context menu opens at the bottom of the screen with the same options as if I had right clicked the actual top bar of the window. I tried searching for solutions, but either I am too dumb to google or no one has found a solution yet. Would be very glad if you could help me.

    Screenshots:

Here you can see the white line at the top

Here is the context menu appearing at the bottom of the screen (I right clicked at the white bar)

Here is how it should look like (no white bar at the top)

[Help] Infinite Loading Screen, Reset windows, but Saved Files

    Posted: 31 May 2018 06:21 AM PDT

I have a problem, where windows just started this black loading screen with the dial, but never loading.

After a few reboots, I followed some restore stuff that didn't work, but the last option was to reset windows and save personal files. (This is what I did.)

It wiped all of my softwares, but it did save my files on the desktop and my personal folders.

    MY PROBLEM:

I had an old printing software called Composer that was installed and running on windows 10 (which was upgraded from win7).

Now that I have to reinstall the software, It will not install the sentinel security key software. (I think it's rainbow 5.41.1) it is a 32-bit.

I tried to install the 64-bit, from the site, but I get an error message: something about the cpu not supported.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If there are no fixes for something like this, I was thinking about windows XP on a second harddrive.

So if this seems to be my route, I would love some help figuring this out.

(I actually have a fresh XP install on a harddrive that I pulled from an old dell) Could I plug this in and boot to it somehow?

[Help] Managing external monitors with a laptop

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:35 AM PDT

I'm new to having an external monitor and I need some help regarding configuring them. Basically my laptop is on my desk, and above it on the wall I have a FHD display. I often unplug my laptop for portable use, and the built in windows settings seem to be intermittent which is why I'm looking for help.

    What I'd like to do:

    - When I plug in my laptop to the monitor, the external monitor becomes my primary, laptop display secondary. Also have steam games launch at 1080p

    - When the laptop is unplugged, the internal display is primary (This already happens) and steam games launch at 768p

These questions might be stupid, so I apologise for that :P Thanks very much!

[Help] Resetting my computer without losing my windows key

    Posted: 31 May 2018 06:19 AM PDT

Hi! I'm in some need of assistance, and thought this would be the best place to post.

A short month ago I bought some new parts for my desktop computer. I upgraded my motherboard, my CPU and my ram, together with a new water-cooling fan. This has gone alright, but my computer sometimes has problems when it starts up and bluescreens. I'm suspecting this is because some old drivers laying around on my computer for the old pc-parts. I'm having a few other problems with it aswell. Because of this, i'm interested in fully resetting my computer and re-installing Windows. However, I've read somewhere that Windows is connected to your motherboard, and that I've might have to buy Windows again if I do this, since I've swapped out my old motherboard. I'm running Windows 10, but I originally had Windows 7 back in 2011 when I bought the computer. I upgraded to Windows 10 with the free upgrade that came out in 2016(?). My question is: is there any way I can reset my PC and still keep windows? Would my Windows key still work if I did this?

If I check the "activation window" it says that Windows 10 home edition is activated with a digital license.

Thanks alot in advance for the help! :)
