A friend's ex is constantly getting her new phone number every time she changes it. She has an iPhone. How is this guy doing it, and how can we stop him?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 08:18 AM PDT

She's changed the number close to 10 times in the past couple weeks. I don't know anything about iPhones because I have an Android. Could he have copied her phone's serial number and/or SIM onto his laptop?

Edit: Apparently I can't type well in the morning. This guy is finding out her new phone number every time she changes it. They do not share an account. It's scaring her and her family. She cannot afford a new phone. And before you ask, a restraining order is in the works.

Edit 2: Currently at work and can't check this thread but every so often. The general consensus is he's getting it through iCloud. Once I get verification from her that everything is changed, I'll mark this. It may take a while, she seems busy. Regardless, I appreciate all the help!

Edit 3: Okay, marking this as solved. Thanks for the help, was not expecting this much of a response!

    What we did: http://reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/8n9ehy/a_friends_ex_is_constantly_getting_her_new_phone/dzuo1o5

EDIT 4: We've fixed it, so you can quit commenting now. The phone is now properly secure and the restraining order is in effect. That is all we can do. Time to let the professionals do their thing and hopefully nab this guy. Thanks again for all the comments!

Almost got scammed (Windows 10) (Windows+R)

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:07 AM PDT

    Computer: Windows 10 PC

I was just wondering if my computer has been hacked. My dad stupidly enough pressed the windows + R when a scammer told him to over the phone. He didn't know that at the time. He apparently pressed some other letters after that but stopped when they asked if they could take charge of the computer. They also read out the serial number of the computer before asking to take charge.

I was wondering if the computer had been affected in anyway and how this scam works. He didn't download anything as far as I know and he didn't give bank details.

I reset the computer and wiped all folders and programs just to be safe.

More insight on how this scam works and whether I need to do anything more would be helpful

    Thanks in advance.

    Recover Google account

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:05 AM PDT

Hopefully this doesn't fall under password issues. If it does let me know and I can try elsewhere.

I'm getting married and recently created a new Gmail account purely for rsvps and in order to segregate the emails. I have no idea why it didn't link to my existing pc and now I cannot recover it through standard methods. It also appears to be rejecting my recovery email address :(

There used to be a way to raise a ticket direct with Google for a review but I can't seem to find it online. Does anyone have any idea how to go through that process?

Win 10 - If I press the Ctrl key 5 times, then press "z", the PC beeps. Sticky keys and filter keys are off. What's doing this?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:40 AM PDT

I've got Windows 10. I noticed that if I press the Ctrl key 5 times in a row, then press "z", the PC beeps. Not the normal Windows "default beep" sound file, but an old school beep.

I already checked and Sticky Keys and Filter Keys appear to be turned off.

What is causing this and how can I make it stop?

Help: Chrome display certain web-pages in a language other than English

    Posted: 31 May 2018 01:49 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm having trouble with Chrome (version 66.0.3359.181, the system spec appear irrelevant as I've tested this on multiple machines) displaying some pages in Russian when other browsers display the same pages in English.

For example, if I open this page with Chrome, I see it in Russian.

Looking at the page source, I can see that the language is set to Russian, but I'm not sure what determines it:

    <html lang="ru" class="gr__help_ubuntu_com">

Also, some pages display content in the language native to the website with embedded Google Maps in Russian -- here is an example.

I suspect the issue is probably related to my Google Chrome or Google account settings. If I open my Chrome settings and go to Advanced, then Language, there is nothing but English there, but for some reason, a lot of webpages default to Russian.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any suggestions on how to make sure that Google displays page either in their native language or English?

    Many thanks!

    Strange Virus (Adware/Bitcoin Miner?)

    Posted: 31 May 2018 01:47 AM PDT

Hi all - appreciate the help in advance. Over the last two days I've noticed some very strange things on my computer.

    1. svchost.exe *32 is constantly at 50% CPU usage and the PID doesn't link to any underlying service. Using the Process Explorer program, it does not show any service and the path links to Windows\SysWOW64\svchost.exe.
    2. Malwarebytes is constantly killing a file called "Riskware.BitCoinMiner" located in Users-->AppData-->Local-->ESET-NOD32. I've never downloaded that AV program and the specific .exe that gets killed by Malwarebytes is MSIEXEC64.exe.
    3. When I try to open a new tab in Google Chrome and search specific phrases such as "MSIEXEC64.exe.", "Adware", "ESET-NOD32" my Chrome instantly crashes. I've tried repairing/reinstalling Chrome and no luck.
    4. I've followed the Malware guide (RKILL, Malwarebytes, Malwarebytes Adware, Hitman, NetAdapterRepair) from start to finish which seems to quarantine/kill 1/2 files here and there but doesn't fix the underlying issue.
    5. Prior to doing so, Malwarebytes was also quarantining a file called "Adware.Filetour".

I'm completely baffled as to what this could be and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

Edit - I also can't access this thread now since it's been posted due to Chrome crashing ad per above. Presumably due to the keywords in the post?

Windows 10 100% disk usage nearly constantly

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:49 AM PDT

My task manager reads 100% disk usage almost all the time, whether an intensive program is running or not. My computer isn't the best, it was a 700 USD gaming build 4 years ago and the only upgrade I've done is change the graphics card from an AMD R9 290 to a 390 last year. And, while cleaning and trying to fix a fan issue not too long ago, I accidentally broke the SATA cable for my second hard drive. Since I never really needed 2, I decided to just use the one that already had windows and most programs installed. (The second was 100% games). However, after I did that it reads 100% disk whenever I open a program or anything else even mildly taxing. I've heard this is relatively common in windows 10, does anyone know possible causes or fixes? Is my hard drive just too old and full? There's currently 100 GB free out of 697 and most of it is games.

Macbook air (a1466) everything upper case?!

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:47 AM PDT

My macbook air is typing everything in upper case. An external keyboard works fine though.

So I went through the pain staking process of replacing the keyboard (60 euros + 2 hours of work) and it's still doing the same thing!

I am clueless.. What's going on here?

I had some issues with the system time being wrong before, which also prevented recovery from reinstalling the OS.

    All my games crash randomly?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:41 AM PDT

    Hey Everyone!

Every time I run a game it works for awhile and then crashes without warning. My problem began 2 days ago and I have been trying to fix it ever since. At first I assumed it started because of issues with my drivers because it began after I had been doing maintenance that included updating all my drivers but I have since reinstalled windows and the problem still happens.

Initially the crashes would cause a BSOD, but now they seem to just crash to desktop. I tried checking to see whether or not it was a hardware issue by monitoring my CPU and GPU temperatures and RAM usage, and I did not see any unreasonably high temperatures that would have caused a crash.

    My PC Specs are
    CPU: Intel Core i7-7700K ~ 4.2GHz
    Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62
Motherboard: Asus STRIX Z270-E ATX LGA1151
    Memory: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 2x8GB DDR4-3200
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5 SSD (Boot Drive), and Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200RPM HDD (mostly for storing games)
GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 1080Ti 11GB STRIX
    PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W 80+ Gold

I've been trying to fix this forever and would really appreciate any suggestions.

Things i've tried: Resetting CMOS all ways possible. Rebuilding computer. Changing Cables. Tried the HDD in another PC, booted with windows just fine. Different SATA2 Ports.

I've done lots of googling. I have no idea. I don't have a spare HDD to try sadly.

    Please help.

For some reason I cannot launch games in Full Screen.

    Posted: 30 May 2018 09:34 PM PDT

So since I've gotten my budget graphics card a few months ago (An MSI Geforce GTX 1050 Ti gaming x 4G) Some games have a hard time launching in Full screen, In some cases I'll receive a D3D error, in other cases (Mostly source games like Gmod) my Display driver will crash altogether and revert to the windows default. In odd cases it can be fixed with a change of resolution (one that is not native to my "monitor" which is a 32inch flatscreen TV) My native resolution is

1768 x 992, but if I launch Fallout: New Vegas with that resolution (Which can only be used in full screen for some odd reason) I will receive an error and be met with a black screen.

I will provide multiple examples of these errors

The error that "Crashes my graphics card" and forces me to restart my computer, or reinstall drivers:https://i.imgur.com/B39GTlP.png

error that only consists on my native resolution (for F:NV): https://i.imgur.com/IzsSXE4.png

Errors that happen on (Using Mount and Blade for an example) games like M&B:W, GTA IV, Victoria II, Verdun: https://i.imgur.com/2PbsRgy.png

If you're willing to help and need more information to investigate (Which I have spent months doing) please ask and I will provide more error logs and such and will assist in any research related to the problem, I am very desperate to fix this problem.

I Spilt Soda on my Laptop

    Posted: 30 May 2018 11:21 PM PDT

Well, not me but my cat, and I didn't realize until it was too late. It shut itself down and now I'm assuming I'm fucked? Is been a few days and it still won't turn on. I opened the back and there's a spot in the middle that looks burnt.

Can it be fixed, and if so will it cost me an arm and a leg? The computer cost $1300 itself. Is there get back any of the stuff I had on it? (I got this Dell Inspiron 7373 earlier this year without a warranty)

Thanks in advance for anyone that can help :))

So my roommate passive aggressively turned off the internet. My desktop is hardwired to a router. The modem is locked in his room while him and his gf are sleeping. Any way I can turn it back on from my end?

Client's server doesn't want to back up (Server 2012 Foundation)

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:46 AM PDT

    Hi,

one of our clients has a backup performed into a local external drive, which I change every week on site.

I would normally just check if it performed backup correctly (it's setup to perform it every day) and then I would just swap the hard drive to the one from last week. I don't have to delete anything, since when it rans out of space it would just overwrite old backup. It was working without problems.

Today in the morning, I've remoted into this server from our office and noticed that not a single backup since I swapped hard drive was completed.

When I try to manually back it up, it gives me following error:

Event ID 517: Backup has failed with following error code '0x8078014B' and that "there was an failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location".

I've Googled around, and stumbled on this thread: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/lync/en-US/64c5a59a-1198-43f2-ba64-fae9e563e0b4/event-id-517-backup-has-failed-with-following-error-code-0x8078014b?forum=winserver8gen

One of the responses say to run "vssadmin list shadowstorage /for=Volume_Letter:" which I did. However, it lists maximum shadow copy storage space as UNBOUNDED.

Could that be a problem? Would allocating some space to it would fix it? If so, how much should I allocate? Used and allocated shadow copy storage space are on 494 and 496 GB respectively.

Just moved. Picking up a WiFi signal and unsure if safe to use

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:44 AM PDT

Just moved into a new house. Having issues getting Shaw internet hooked up and just found what I'm assuming to be a neighbors WiFi.

The network name is "Virus_Infected_Network" and has no password protection. Speedtest has it as Shaw.

I've also seen the networks "Trojan_Rootkit" and "Clean Network" which are password protected

While I realize they're probably just funny names, it got me to thinking. Also seems odd that there's an unprotected network in 2018.

All morality and legal issues aside, what are the chances of this network being unsafe to use for a week or 2 until I get my service sorted out? Is there any signs to look for that may tell me if the network is being monitored etc? Is there any way to safely use unprotected WiFi or is it simply a risk no matter what?

Mostly just curious about it as it's all new to me, I'm going to talk to a different neighbor tomorrow about using his WiFi with permission.

    Cheers!

Asus ROG Gaming Laptop with an audio jack not working???

    Posted: 30 May 2018 10:44 PM PDT

If the model of my laptop is needed, I'll edit that in but I can't be bothered right now. Two nights ago, my laptop's audio jack just shut off. No matter what I plug into the jack, no audio comes through. I have 'realtk audio drivers' and latest at that, installed. When I bring up Device Manager (I'm running Win. 10) and select the audio devices, it shows the volume output through the jack. If I'm playing music, the volume bar is lighting up, showing that there should be audio, but just no audio comes out. I've searched for an update on the driver but found nothing. There also hasn't been an update, so this is quite random and sudden. The audio jack is still detecting whatever I plug in, but just no sound is coming out! Help, peeps?

    Finlux smart-tv won't turn off.

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:13 AM PDT

I bought this TV used but the seller seemed reputable enough and said he hasn't had this issue. This happens very randomly, earlier today I was able to turn it off like you normally would by pressing the power button on the remote control but now when I try the power button literally doesn't do anything. Even the physical power button on the TV itself won't turn it off.

I was unable to find much about the tv online and all I have is that it's a Finlux 40" 4k UHD smart-tv (FIN40ULTRA).

I want to perform tasks based on system events of Windows. I've come across this Superuser submission. I would like to explore other useful system events that i can monitor for and get the computer to perform a task.

Is there a website/program feature i can use to look at the system events?

When i've attempted to Google this, i just results of people asking about specific problems. Eg. Mainly error 41 for Kernal-Power.

I talked with my ISP, they checked their logs and said that there was no problem with my connection in the past couple of months. Is it possible that my 9yrs old TP link is going bad? If thats the case, can you guys recommend me a good mid range router?

Usb and external hard drive messed up

    Posted: 30 May 2018 08:04 PM PDT

Basically i create a bootable device with the windows 10 media creation tool on my 2 tb hard drive. Now the hard drive and a lot of unsusable unallocated space. Ive tried to go into disk management fix it with some youtube method but had no luck. I want to use that drive to store stuff again. Also i turned a usb flashdrive into a linux live bootable device. After that i tried to turn the usb into a windows 10 bootable device and it does not work on any pc. Someone help me with hard drives. I tried to make my internal C: drive "active" and now windows wont boot. Thats a separate problem.. i figured if i can just fix my external drives and use one to reinstall windows 10 AGAIN then everything should be good. Sorry for the lengthy post but the other day i was almost scammed and my computer took the worst of it..
