    Is MIUI that bad?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:47 PM PDT

I don't mind that it's not as fast as stock android or has RAM management that isn't as good, I don't think it's a big enough difference to matter. But I've heard people complaining about ads and malware that you have to deal with even on the official ROM. I have also seen threads that show they have no respect for privacy at all. Is it really this bad?

Redmi Note 5 Global on Gearbest no Longer on Presale

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:43 PM PDT

I've been checking the site daily, also watching the price rise all the way up to $270 for the 4/64 model. It's been on presale all the time, with the presale ending on 14 May.

I just checked now again and it's no longer on presale, price has dropped to $230, and is shipping from 01 May.

Note that this is for China warehouse. HK warehouse ships from 30 April but is still priced at $270.

Mi A1 First Impressions (and a bit of comparison with the J7 Pro and 6S Plus).

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:57 AM PDT

Formerly an owner of a iPhone 6S Plus for the last 2.5 years, before I ditched it for a Galaxy J7 Pro a month ago, and this week, I just got my hands on a Mi A1. So far, it ticks all of the check boxes I want on a smartphone.

Just like on my former iPhone 6S Plus and my J7 Pro, the metal body is slippery but premium-feeling. I would suggest picking up a case for it, even if you're the most careful person in the world. You'll drop this one day.

From watching YouTube videos, the metal on the Mi A1 is not as rigid as the J7 Pro and the 6S Plus. It bends/kinks easily compared to the other two. I guess this is one of the areas where they cut corners to make this thing cheap. Luckily, you can easily replace it by taking two screws and pulling it out. Replacement parts are cheap, too.

Buttons are decently tactile, but not as clicky as my J7 Pro.

The J7 Pro and the Mi A1 is roughly the same size. I wish the microSD gets its own slot. If Samsung can do it, so can Xiaomi. But I guess, it's another comprise they made to make this cheap.

Given the Snapdragon 625, 4GB of RAM, and stock Android. THIS THING FLIES. Everything I've thrown at it, handled it well. Perhaps the only thing that would slow this down is playing games like PUBG or others that really taxes the processor and GPU, I only play casual games, even that, I rarely play.

1/3 of the time on my 6S and J7, it refuses to accept my fingerprint due to "dirty" sensor or "wet" fingers. Even though my hands is dry and the sensor is clearly not dirty. With this phone, it accepted every time.

If you're in North America, it has LTE band 4, so you can use this on AT&T or T-Mobile in the US. Although if you really need Band 12, then you're SOL.

The camera is meh. This is another thing that they cut corners on. It's good enough for posting on the web (Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, etc.), and for casual family vacations, and whatnot. Good enough for me. If I wanted killer photo quality, I'll just buy a DSLR. At least, that won't get outdated quickly, like a smartphone. It also has a telephoto camera, other than using it to zoom 2x without looking pixilated, I don't have any use for it.

Audio on the other hand surprised me. If I crank the to the maximum, it would blow my eardrums out, but it's not distorted. With the J7 and 6S, if I do the same. It's loud, but that's about it. With speakers, it definitely blows both the 6S and J7 out of the water. It's more or less loud than my Bluetooth speaker (A2 Pro). Although, the speakers could use a bit more bass. I never noticed the hum that some people are noticing, I think it's because I'm using Samsung earbuds that came with my J7.

Mainly on data with adoptive brightness, GPS/Bluetooth on. I get about 4-6 hours of SOT. Mainly I use the phone for Facebook, Reddit, YouTube, Chrome, call/text, and Google Maps. On WiFi, I get about 6-8 hours.

Last but not least. If you want to service this phone yourself. There's barely any pesky glue to deal with. Just take out two screws and you're in. With the Samsung, you actually need glue to get inside. Which is risky.

The Mi A1 do have some compromises, but for the price it's understandable and it doesn't really compromise the usability of the phone itself. It's say if you have $200 for a phone, then I can easily recommend this.

Unable to stream/download on miui 9

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:57 PM PDT

Hello, I frequently watch anime on my phone using anYme app and I was using lineage OS all this while and I switched to miui 9 developer ROM on my Redmi note 3 (Kenzo) but ever since I switched I can't seem to stream/download videos from anYme.

But, if I'm using VPN the app works exactly as intended. I can download and stream. Is there any fix for this? I don't want to use VPN everytime because my speed gets reduced a lot. Also I'm not entirely comfortable using a free VPN.

Any progress on the Notebook Pro bios issues?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:28 PM PDT

The temps on mine have been so low that I want to go with a slight TDP boost as recommended by several reviewers, but mine came on locked (501) bios.

Has anyone figured out how to flash 401? If not, are the fan issues on 301 really so bad that it's not worth a downgrade? And (forgive me if this sounds ridiculous) but is it possible to downgrade, change the TDP/clocks, and then upgrade to fix the fan issues? Or work around the fan issues some other way?

    Thanks. Please advise.

13.3 Notebook Air Nvidia GPU Issues

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:30 PM PDT

So I bought a 2017 13.3 Notebook Air last year (right before the new models were announced, felt pretty stupid about that). I wiped the laptop though to install a new version of Windows in English. And for the life of me, I can't get my Nvidia GPU to work. I have tried various Nvidia drivers (the latest one, the original one that shipped with the PC, and a few others), and none of them can detect that a Nvidia GPU is installed on my mobo, so I can't install the driver.

Has anyone else had this issue? I'm wondering if I can replace my card since I think its faulty?

    Redmi Note 4X Bad USB?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 02:03 PM PDT

    MIUI Global 9.5 Stable - 9.5.8.0 NCFMIFA

I got a brand new Note 4X and I am having issues with USB. It's running stock firmware and I've tried a different USB cable.

If I plug the phone in while it is on nothing happens, I don't get any charging or file transfer functionality.

If I turn the phone off then plug it in it will charge and then if I power the phone on it continues to charge.

If I then remove and re-insert the USB it wont charge or show up in file manager.

    Is it broken?

Android One on the Mi Mix 2 possible?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:52 PM PDT

Ok, so I don't know if it's been talked about in the Xiaomi circles at all as I am new to the community. I got the Mi Mix 2 last month, and I don't mind the MIUI as much as I thought I would, but I still prefer the stock android experience more. So my question is, is the Android One from Mi A1 possible on the more powerful Mi Mix 2? I also know I can unlock bootloader and flash Lineage and whatnot to have a more stock experience, but battery life is my number one concern, and I don't think any of the custom roms have as good a battery life as stock or even miui (correct me if I'm wrong here).

So all in all, my question is, could I possibly have android one rom on Mi Mix 2 and get an even battery life than what I have now on MIUI? Thanks.

    Amazfit Bip worth it?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:49 PM PDT

Hello. So for my birthday I got some money and I am thinking of purchasing Amazfit Bip. Currently I have Mi band 2 and use it to track my steps as my work requires a lot of walking and it is nice to know how much I have traveled. For now Mi band 2 satisfies me, but I am thinking of buying Amazfit Bip, because I have started exercising at the gym and I would like to track my progress better then Mi band 2 can. I can get Amazfit Bip locally for 70 euros with 24 months warranty. The best price I could find was at Aliexpress for about 60 euros. But I would have to wait for a few weeks and likely have to deal with customs as Amazfit would exceed 22 euros tax limit. So I would like to ask if it is worth it to buy Amazfit Bip as a whole for more functions then Mi band 2 (mainly for steps count, great battery life and exercise) and pay 10 more euros for getting it tomorrow or should I keep my Mi band 2 and save money. I live in Lithuania if that changes anything and have many others Xiaomi products as I like the value it provides. There is a link from the store I am thinking to buy https://www.topocentras.lt/telefonai-navigacijos-auto-iranga/ismanieji-laikrodziai/ismanusis-laikrodis-xiaomi-amazfit-bip-black.html

Is there a difference between flagship and midrange phone display even if pixel density is the same on paper?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:04 PM PDT

Hi guys so in the past I've owned a xiaomi redmi note 3 pro and though the display was sharp, colors felt bad and the gap between the display felt it was too big. However recently, I got my mi6 and oh my lord, the display was amazing despite having the same 1080p resoltution as redmi note 3 pro. My question is for the newer redmi note 5 pro or note 5, would the display have this same issue as on redmi note 3 where there's a screen gap between the displays and won't look at good as my mi6? Or have the new redmi note 5 improved in this area?

    Buying from Gearbest

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:51 PM PDT

Looking to get a redmi note 5 pro from gera best as seen here but would like some help with the shipping options. When I select Hong Kong it offers faster shipping which I like but has this whole presale stuff and presale pricing. If anyone could run me through what the presale stuff means it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My vacuum isn't working as well anymore

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:40 PM PDT

It hasn't been working as well lately, so I replaced the main brush and filter. Still doesn't work well. It's missing things that it didn't miss before and it's coming back almost empty. It's still on "MAX". Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this?

    Xiaomi Mijia Dafang

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:29 AM PDT

    Hey r/Xiaomi!

Recently I've been really interested in buying one of the security cameras of the Xiaomi/Mijia ecosystem, but all I could find is on Aliexpress or GearBest (It's just that it takes way too long to deliver)...

Is there any more trusted marketplace I could buy a camera from?

So for a while now I've been looking for an indoor camera. Just watched a video comparing all of the cameras and the dafang came out as best bang for buck. That being said I've read that xiaomi has been Geo blocking cameras outside of China. Will I have any issues if I go ahead and buy this?

    Review of The Solution Shop

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:25 AM PDT

Full disclosure, I was asked to do this by The Solution Shop, not personally but by a blanket email. I was promised a 5% discount on my next process for a full and honest review on Reddit - so that is what I am doing.

So I made my order for a Mi A1 (Black) on April the 19th and paid via Credit Card. The order process was quick and easy, and I received a confirmation email of my order, with expected dispatch dates a few minutes later. The order was dispatched on the 22nd and I received the order yesterday morning by DHL. The entire process was trackable and I even received an expected delivery date two days before delivery, along with an SMS message on the day of delivery.
I have obviously not been able to take advantage of the warranty, and have some hesitation as the reviews are not great, but it seems they are improving most aspects of their business at the moment, so I will expect it to be fine.

Overall quite a good experience, the only thing I would say is that "Live Chat" can take 5-10 mins to reply. Found email support much better, as they take around 10-15 mins to reply, but you don't need to wait around on the website.

Edit 1: Just sent the link of this to customer support and they have issued me with a 5% voucher.
